Bad news for Palhinha: Spurs hold contact over signing £218k-p/w “machine”

After starting 11 of his first 12 appearances in the Premier League this season, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Joao Palhinha has found game time harder to come by of late.

The Portugal international’s start against Brentford on Thursday night was his first in the top-flight since November, as he had been an unused substitute once and came off the bench three times in December, per Transfermarkt.

Palhinha has scored four goals and provided three assists in all competitions, per Sofascore, but he has not found the back of the net since the 4-0 win over Copenhagen at the start of November.

The Bayern Munich loanee’s general struggles in possession may be why he has found himself out of the side of late, as he ranks within the bottom 23% of midfielders in the Premier League for progressive passes per 90 (3.24) and the bottom 16% for progressive carries per 90 (0.53), per FBref.

Spurs eyeing move for Bundesliga star

Spurs are now reportedly in the mix to sign another central midfielder who could further restrict the game time that Palhinha gets in the second half of the season.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

According to CaughtOffside, Bayern Munich midfield star Leon Goretzka’s representatives have reached out to make contact with Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, and Arsenal.

The report claims that their sources have indicated that the German giants would be forced to consider a sale in the January transfer window if a convincing offer lands at their desk.

It adds that the Lilywhites are closely monitoring the Germany international’s situation at the Allianz Arena, as they ponder a winter swoop for the experienced midfielder.

However, CaughtOffside does not reveal how much money it would take for Bayern to consider an offer for the £218k-per-week star to be ‘convincing’ enough for them to part ways with him.

Why Tottenham's Goretzka interest is bad news for Palhinha

It could be Déjà vu for Palhinha if Spurs manage to agree a deal to bring Goretzka to North London, because he left Bayern on loan in the summer after struggling for minutes behind the German giant last term.

The Portugal international only started six league matches for Bayern under Vincent Kompany in the 2024/25 campaign, whilst Goretzka started 13 times and played nine more games overall, per Sofascore.

As you can see in the table above, the Germany international justified his larger role in the squad with superior performances in the middle of the park in the Bundesliga last term.

Goretzka, who has been described as a midfield “machine” by Bayern teammate Aleksandar Pavlović, is a more well-rounded midfielder who is better suited to playing in a dominant team that wants to compete at the top end of the table.

Palhinha provides great defensive qualities with his ability to make tackles and interceptions, ranking in the top 1% of Premier League midfielders for tackles per 90 (5.27) this season, per FBref.

Midfielders in teams that want to compete at the very top need to be able to offer quality in possession to go along with their defensive qualities, though, which may be why Kompany was willing to let him go, and why Thomas Frank has dropped him in recent weeks.

The statistics in the chart above from Goretzka and Palhinha’s statistics this season show the significant difference in quality in possession between the two players, as the German ranks highly in a host of possession-based metrics.

This suggests that, as was the case at Bayern in the 2024/25 campaign, Goretzka’s presence in the squad could spell bad news for the former Fulham star in the second half of this season.

The 30-year-old star could be an excellent addition to Frank’s squad to add more quality on the ball to his options in the middle of the park, possibly leaving Palhinha’s future at the club beyond his initial loan spell in serious doubt because he could struggle for game time behind the German talent.

Why selling him is the right decision for Liverpool

Despite being banned for a total of 19 games during his Liverpool career, Luis Suarez has never been sent off for the club. That’s a pretty impressive stat for a player that has used racially offensive remarks towards an member of the opposition, bitten a player, and been accused of stamping on opponents on more than one occasion.

But aside from his despicable antics, Suarez is a bloody good player. Which is the only reason he hasn’t already been shipped out to become some other club’s pain in the backside. But just how many goals do you need to score in a season to make up for all the negative press that a player brings to your club?

[cat_link cat=”liverpool” type=”list”]

Obviously there are certain ‘fans’ that will spend their lives supporting Suarez’s disappointing exploits, but the kind of unsavoury individual that condones such actions isn’t worth acknowledging anyway.

Liverpool aren’t the only club with these kind of fans, every club has its fair share of idiots in the stands, but the true fans know Suarez is starting to tarnish the reputation of their great club, and as we all well know, the name on the front of the shirt is far bigger than the name on the back.

The argument for Liverpool fans is that just who could they get in as a replacement for Suarez, because his goals have been influential in Liverpool’s Premier League position this year, right? Well, no. According to Opta, even if Suarez’s goals were discounted this season, they’d still have finished a relatively disappointing 7th in this season’s campaign.

In fact Liverpool coped just fine without Suarez when they had to, they won three of their last four games of the season while Suarez was banned, including an entry into performance of the season with a 6-0 win against Newcastle. During that time former Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge found the net five times, and Coutinho continued to play the kind of football that made Liverpool interested in his signature in the first place.

Basically what I’m trying to say is that Liverpool have a perfectly good squad to cope without the Uruguayan next season. Coutinho looks quite the talent, and Sturridge’s goals to game ratio has improved vastly since he was given the chance to play as an out and out striker, rather than on the wing.

There’s no doubt that Suarez will need replacing, but with a transfer fee of a reported £50million for the striker and the impending £15 millionfrom West Ham for Andy Carroll, they’ll certainly have the spending power to compete with the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea.

And if Liverpool are able to compete with the Premier League giants off the pitch, who knows, they may soon be able to challenge them on it. £65million is the kind of budget that should be able to secure Champions League for your club, and there’s no doubt that Liverpool have the stature to get back to their once sublime best.

It may look like a short term nightmare for the club, but in the long term it’d be the right decision to let Suarez go. They’d have the capital to enhance their squad in numerous positions, and they’d manage to turn a profit on what is effectively a ticking time bomb.

Crystal Palace join Boubacar Kamara race

Crystal Palace have joined West Ham in the race to sign Marseille midfielder Boubacar Kamara, according to The Sun’s Alan Nixon.

The Lowdown: Kamara profiled

Primarily a defensive midfielder, the Frenchman is into the final four months of his contract at the Ligue 1 club.

Valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, the 22-year-old can also play at centre-back and has made 153 appearances for his current employers.

However, it looks as if he may leave Marseille on a free transfer ahead of the 2022/23 campaign. He has already held talks with Newcastle United and West Ham, with Palace the latest Premier League club to show an interest.

The Latest: Palace links with Kamara

According to reliable journalist Nixon, Palace backer John Textor is ready to splash the cash in the summer to back Patrick Vieira.

It is thought that the Eagles have now entered the race for Kamara’s services, and it doesn’t appear they are put off by the player’s substantial wage demands.

The Verdict: Smart target

Vieira appears to be building for the future at Selhurst Park with a number of exciting additions during his first season as manager, and Kamara could be an ideal signing ahead of the 45-year-old’s second year in charge, looking to take the Eagles to the next level.

Kamara already has plenty of Ligue 1 experience and has played in the Champions League and Europa League, being hailed as a ‘phenomenon’ by former Marseille teammate Rolando.

With no transfer fee required, Palace could offer the player a lucrative salary, but they may need to pip some Premier League rivals in the race for the Frenchman’s services.

Leeds: Cameron Toshack arrives under Jesse Marsh

Jesse Marsch has brought in Cameron Toshack as his assistant at Leeds United, Training Ground Guru report.

The Lowdown: Toshack profiled

Toshack, son of former Liverpool player and Wales manager John Toshack, has been around coaching since 2004.

The 51-year-old has worked as a technical coach, assistant manager, match analyst and manager, with his latest position coming at Pafos FC. [Transfermarkt]

Toshack likes to play a 4-2-3-1 system, with Dan James hailing the new Leeds man for playing a ‘big part’ in his development at Swansea.

The Latest: Toshack joins

Training Ground Guru shared a story on Wednesday morning, revealing Toshack has new been appointed under Marsch ahead of his first game in charge against Leicester City on Saturday.

Four of Marcelo Bielsa’s assistants left when he was sacked on Sunday, with Graham Smyth claiming Toshack’s arrival at Thorp Arch has ‘caught a few by surprise’.

The Verdict: Shrewd move?

Toshack has never worked under Marsch before, but you’d expect the American would’ve had a major say in the Welshman’s arrival.

You can see why Marsch wanted Toshack, though, especially after he worked wonders in Swansea City’s academy.

The likes of James, Oli McBurnie, Conor Roberts and Joe Rodon all made the step up to senior level with Wales under Toshack in the academy, and with Leeds and Marsch happy to give youngsters a chance, his appointment could be a wise move.

Crystal Palace: Journalist relays James McArthur update

Crystal Palace will be without midfielder James McArthur against Manchester City, football.london’s Mark Wyatt reports.

The Lowdown: Injury problems

McArthur, labelled as ‘undroppable’ by Dan Cook, missed 11 Premier League games earlier in the season but made a return last month against Brentford.

He appeared to be over his injury problems after featuring in four successive league games but was missing against Wolves last weekend.

The central midfielder, who is out of contract in the summer, has joined Joel Ward and Nathan Ferguson on the injury table, and a return on Monday evening isn’t on the cards for the Scot.

The Latest: Wyatt’s report

Wyatt shared a story for football.london on Thursday evening following Patrick Vieira’s press conference earlier in the day.

He claimed that McArthur, who played a key role in the win at the Etihad back in October, won’t be available at Selhurst Park.

The Verdict: Not ideal

Palace have lost just one of their last eight games in all competitions, half of which have been without McArthur, but not having him available isn’t ideal for Vieira.

He captained the side on numerous occasions earlier in the season, so his leadership qualities could have come in handy, even it was just being part of the match-day squad.

However, Vieira will now have to rely on his other midfield options against Pep Guardiola’s side, as he looks to do the double over the defending champions.

Leeds: Orta initiates Cakir transfer talks

Leeds United are interested in a deal to bring Ugurcan Cakir to Elland Road in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Turkish media outlet Fanatik (via Sport Witness), who claim that Victor Orta and his Leeds United transfer team have contacted the Trabzonspor goalkeeper’s agent ahead of a potential move for the 25-year-old at the end of the current campaign.

The report goes on to state that both Newcastle United and Sevilla are also interested in a swoop for the Turkey international, for whom the Super Lig side are believed to be demanding a fee in the region of €20m (£18m) in order to part with this summer.

Cakir can solve Marsch’s huge issue

While both Illan Meslier and Kristoffer Klaesson are undoubtedly exceptionally talented goalkeepers, with Meslier being 22 years of age and Klaesson just 20, in addition to the fact that Leeds have shipped a league-high 67 goals so far this season, it is perhaps unsurprising that Orta is targeting a more experienced option between the sticks ahead of the Whites’ 2022/23 campaign.

And, considering just how impressive Cakir has been for Trabzonspor this season, it is clear to see why the Leeds sporting director would be interested in a move for the 25-year-old this summer.

Indeed, over his 28 Super Lig appearances in the current campaign, the £15.3m-rated shot-stopper has kept nine clean sheets, as well as conceding just 0.8 goals and making 3.6 saves per game, with these returns seeing the ‘keeper average a quite remarkable SofaScore match rating of 7.18 – ranking him as Abdullah Avci’s sixth-best player in the top flight of Turkish football.

As such, it is perhaps no surprise that a number of European heavyweights are also believed to be keeping an eye on the £22k-per-week goalkeeper, with Liverpool even reportedly having a £22m bid turned down for the 25-year-old who Lee Congerton dubbed “one of the best” back in 2020.

So, when taking into account the fact that conceding goals has been a huge issue for Leeds this season, a move for a shot-stopper as talented as Cakir would indeed appear to make a great deal of sense for the Whites this summer.

Newcastle eyeing two centre-back signings

An update has emerged on Newcastle United’s plans that will cause concern for Dan Burn…

What’s the talk?

Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has warned the Englishman that he is likely to face stiff competition for his place next season.

The journalist has claimed that the Magpies may sign as many as two central defenders in the next transfer window, leaving his spot in the team in a vulnerable position.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I don’t think what he’s done will have any impact at all on Newcastle’s plans for the summer. I still expect them to spend big, and I expect them to bring in at least one, if not two international centre-backs, even with Dan Burn there.”

Disasterclass

PIF must avoid a Darsley Park disaster this summer because instantly replacing Burn would be a huge mistake by the owners.

Firstly, he has been excellent in the Premier League this season and there is little need to find an immediate upgrade in his position.

Steven Taylor dubbed him a “perfect” signing for the club and Toon legend Alan Shearer admitted that he was shocked by his performances, saying: “I looked at him at Brighton and I saw a good Premier League player, who is reliable. I have got to be honest. I didn’t realise how good he was, in terms of what he has brought to this Newcastle team, the leadership.

“Watch the way he’s looking around and trying to organise different players, then taking up his position to do his bit defensively. He has been a leader in that back four, ever since he has put that black and white shirt on.”

He has averaged a superb SofaScore rating of 7.03 for Brighton and Newcastle combined, making 3.1 tackles and interceptions per game. The £20k-per-week machine has shown that he can consistently deliver in the top-flight and that is one reason why it would be a mistake to replace him this summer.

Another reason why it would be a mistake from PIF is that it would surely put some players off from wanting to join the club.

Seeing that they are willing to wield their axe with Burn, in the sense of replacing him in the starting XI, after just a few months in which he has been delivering quality performances would cause targets to think twice about whether or not it is the best move for their career.

Why would a player be interested in signing for the Magpies if they know that they can put in excellent displays and help the team massively and still be potentially pushed aside within weeks or months?

Therefore, the Magpies must add one centre-back to their squad this summer to compete with the likes of Schar and Dan Burn, instead of signing a completely new defensive pairing.

How is Joe Hugill doing after leaving Sunderland?

Sunderland’s youth academy has produced a number of important players for the club over recent years, with the likes of Lynden Gooch, Elliot Embleton and Dan Neil all becoming key parts of the team.

The club also have homegrown duo Anthony Patterson and Benjamin Kimpioka part of the first-team squad, while the likes of Norwich City-owned Bali Mumba, Stoke City striker Josh Maja and Hull City star George Honeyman have all gone on to make excellent starts to their careers after leaving the Stadium of Light.

One man they will be having nightmares over letting go so early is 18-year-old Joe Hugill, who signed for Manchester United back in the summer of 2018 for a £297k fee.

Having scored 12 goals in 21 games this season across the Red Devils’ youth teams, he has slowly become one of the Premier League giants’ most exciting prospects.

“Joe Hugill’s progress has come as a pleasant surprise to the coaching staff at Manchester United who recognised his potential when they brought him in from Sunderland,” said Sky Sports News reporter James Cooper about Hugill’s development last year.

“But the speed of that progress has exceeded expectations, bearing in mind he’s only been at the club for three months.

“Hugill was part of a recruitment drive that has seen some of Europe’s best young talent arrive at Manchester United in recent weeks to not only bolster the club’s Academy but also provide Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with more options further down the line.”

With comparisons made between him and Harry Kane due to his ability to hold the ball up, link-up play and finish clinically, we may finally get to see more of the 6 foot2 forward over the next few seasons, either playing in the Premier League 2, or out-on-loan at a Football League side.

While Sunderland striker Ross Stewart has notched 22 goals already this season, the next highest goalscorer is Embleton with five, level with Nathan Broadhead – and despite goals not particular being the team’s biggest issue, if the North-East club kept Hugill for just a little longer, he would have thrived in League One, and the transfer fee they earned for him could have been far larger.

It’s safe to say this was somewhat of a howler from Stewart Donald to let him move away so easily and indeed cheaply.

Brighton in talks to sign Rangers’ Rory Wilson

A frustrating behind-the-scenes Rangers claim has emerged on Ibrox striker Rory Wilson…

What’s the talk?

According to Football Insider, a source has revealed that the Gers teenager could leave before even playing a minute under Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

It’s understood that Brighton are in talks over a deal to sign the attacker as they look to swoop in ahead of their rivals to land him. They are said to be pushing hard to get this over the line after the striker turned down fresh terms in Glasgow.

The report claims that Rangers will only rake in £300k in development costs should he leave to join the Seagulls as he is out of contract at the end of the campaign.

Wilson is said to have met with his namesake Ross Wilson and Gio van Bronckhorst to discuss staying at Ibrox, but has decided that he wants to move on to pastures new.

Fume

This update will leave the Gers sporting director fuming as £300k is a paltry sum of money for a player with the 16-year-old’s potential.

The Scottish striker has scored 40 goals for the youth teams in Glasgow this season, whilst he has also netted seven times in six matches for his country at U17 level – scoring his latest against Georgia on Tuesday. He has been in phenomenal form for the academy and this suggests that he has the potential to make it in the first team if he is able to continue to progress.

Wilson has been showing that he is too good to be playing in the youth sides as he has been finding the net at a ridiculous rate, hence why Premier League sides are now trying to swoop him up.

The last time the Gers lost a hugely-talented prospect to an English side was when Billy Gilmour signed for Chelsea in 2017. He reportedly left for £500k with performance-related add-ons and is now valued at a whopping £10.8m by Transfermarkt – significantly more than the fee Rangers have seen for his talents.

If Wilson is able to follow in Gilmour’s footsteps and make his mark in England and at international level, then the £300k Brighton will need to pay this summer will look like a huge bargain.

This is why Rangers’ sporting director will be fuming that the Seagulls are now pushing to get a deal done and that they will only need to shell out less than half a million pounds for his signature.

Liverpool now discussing emergency loan deal for PSG star to cover Isak injury

Michael Edwards is now reportedly holding internal discussions about signing a replacement for the injured Alexander Isak for Liverpool in the January transfer window.

Liverpool discussing Isak replacement

Isak’s injury couldn’t have been timed much worse. Liverpool are already without Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah through injury and AFCON duties, which mean that Isak’s injury has left them scrambling for attacking options.

Arne Slot was far from happy with Micky van de Ven’s challenge, which injured Isak in the process of the Swede’s second Premier League goal for the club last weekend, telling reporters: “It’s going to be a long injury, for a couple of months. It’s a big disappointment for him and, as a result, for us.

Liverpool now in "talks" to sign £85,000-a-week Semenyo alternative in January

The Reds look set to miss out on Semenyo.

3 ByTom Cunningham

“This was, for me, a reckless challenge. I’ve said a lot about the tackle of Xavi Simons (who was sent off dragging his studs down the calf of Virgil van Dijk) which for me was completely unintentional.

“I don’t think you will ever get an injury out of a tackle like that. But the tackle of Van de Ven, if you make a tackle like that 10 times, 10 times there is a serious chance the player gets a serious injury.”

The Dutchman has now been left to find attacking solutions just as the January transfer window arrives. To that end, it remains to be seen just how busy Liverpool will be.

Given Isak’s injury, an attacking additions seems like a must if the Reds are to turn their season around, but a move for Antoine Semenyo now looks off the table.

Liverpool had been chasing his signature alongside the majority of the Premier League’s top clubs, but the Bournemouth star has reportedly chosen a move to Manchester City in January instead.

Back to square one, Edwards is now reportedly discussing the possibility of signing Goncalo Ramos next month, according to Caught Offside.

Edwards discussing Goncalo Ramos deal

The Reds are reportedly eyeing a six-month loan deal for the PSG forward, who has started just eight of 16 Ligue 1 games for the French side so far this season – scoring four goals in the process.

Whether PSG allow the Portugal international to leave on loan is the big question. Whilst he’s not first-choice, Liverpool will know themselves just how important squad depth is for sides competing for several honours.

Manager Luis Enrique is certainly fond of Ramos too, having told reporters back in May when the forward netted a hat-trick against Montpellier: “He’s a wonderful player, capable of very high performances.

“If he plays a minute, he plays it very well. If he’s not on the pitch, he still helps the team. And today, he came into the starting eleven and scored three goals. So he’s a player who always performs at his best, and I would call him a guarantee.”

When it comes to replacing Isak whilst he remains sidelined, Ramos should be at the top of Liverpool’s shortlist given his experience at the top level.
