Adams, Davies, Gressel & the MLS Bargain XI

A pair of teenagers and a trio of New York Red Bulls headline Goal's selections as the best values, based on salary, in Major League Soccer

Salaries in Major League Soccer continue to rise, and have seen a considerable spike since the infusion of targeted allocation money in the past two seasons. That has led to a near doubling of the number of million-dollar salaries in the league, and a sizable jump in the number of players making more than $500,000.

That doesn't mean there still aren't some super-sized bargains to be had. Players signed via homegrown player deals and those who enter the league via the MLS draft continue to give MLS teams a steady stream of bargains, several of which make up the squad chosen by Goal to be part of the MLS Bargain XI, the best values in the league.

Here is the 2018 MLS Bargain XI, with salaries based on guaranteed compensation as released by the MLS players union last week .

Greg BartramGK Alex Bono, Toronto FC, $102,200The 24-year-old goalkeeper is in the midst of his second full season as Toronto FC's starter and is continuing to show improvement, building on his MLS Cup-winning 2017 season. His exploits in TFC's CONCACAF Champions League run turned heads, and he has also broken into the U.S. national team picture. Still playing on his rookie contract, Bono should be securing a new contract soon, assuming he doesn't head to Europe via transfer.AdvertisementRB Julian Gressel, Atlanta United, $111,250A midfielder who has thrived this season since being moved into a right wing-back role, Gressel has carried over the success from his MLS Rookie of the Year award-winning 2017 into the 2018 season. He has been one of the key reasons Tata Martino has seen his team enjoy such success playing in a 3-5-2 formation. The 24-year-old German-born standout should be drawing attention from scouts and will have a strong case for a new contract this winter.Mark J. RebilasCB Tim Parker, New York Red Bulls, $115,935How is Parker so underpaid? He's still playing on his original rookie contract, which expires at the end of this season. He is in line for a big payday this winter, either in Europe or in a new MLS deal. The Vancouver Whitecaps traded him rather than making him one of the league's highest-paid defenders. Since joining the Red Bulls, Parker has been outstanding and has helped his new team forge the best defense in club history.ENJOYED THIS STORY?

CB Aaron Long, New York Red Bulls $73,125A repeat selection on the MLS Bargain XI, Long has followed up his breakout 2017 season with a strong start to 2018. His skill on the ball, coupled with an improving defensive skill set, make him one of the league's most underrated defenders. It shouldn't be long before the 25-year-old central defender secures a new contract with the Red Bulls.

Van Niekerk stars in historic SA win

South Africa recorded their first ever women’s T20 victory over England to level the three-match series at 1-1

Firdose Moonda at Newlands19-Feb-2016
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsDane van Niekerk marshaled South Africa’s chase with 63 from 43 balls•Getty ImagesSouth Africa recorded their first ever women’s T20 victory over England to level the three-match series at 1-1. In a rain-interrupted innings, South Africa, anchored by Dane van Niekerk’s second successive fifty, held their nerve and paced their chase well to ensure Sunday’s fixture will be a decider. After England defended 147 in Paarl a day ago, they would have thought they had enough when they crept over that total at Newlands. Sarah Taylor formed the spine of the innings, as she did in the first match, but she also had greater support. She shared in a 61-run second-wicket stand with Charlotte Edwards and a 63-run fourth-wicket partnership with Heather Knight but South Africa, helped by wayward bowling and clumsy fielding from England, were not overawed.Van Niekerk, who was dropped on 6 and 22, set the tone when she dispatched a loosener from Anya Shrubsole and then punished Danielle Hazell, who erred in length. She was almost run out, too, when Trisha Chetty sent her back even though she had advanced more than halfway down the wicket from the non-striker’s end. The throw from Hazell came in at the striker’s end instead but quick work from Taylor ensured Chetty was out.If van Niekerk was shaken by it, she did not show any signs and struck the first six of the innings with a slog sweep. She hit the ball with power and fine placement and beat short third man with a delicate lap to enter the 40s. Her fifty came via a pull off the 34th ball she faced. That shot also took South Africa halfway to the target. They were well placed on 80 for 1 after 10 overs and England could not pull them back. Jenny Gunn was punished for width but, just as South Africa seemed to get away, Rebecca Grundy struck. She beat van Niekerk, who had come down the track, and Taylor whipped the bails off.The first rains fell at the end of that over but South Africa, at 108 for 2, were well ahead on the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern and Marizanne Kapp had already showed her intent to finish things off fast with two furious pulls. The delay was short and Mignon du Preez and Kapp kept South Africa above the required rate, so that when the second interruption happened, four over and two balls later, South Africa were still ahead despite Kapp’s dismissal. More rain followed and the players did not get back on but South Africa’s batsmen had earned their first win over England after 14 attempts. It was just reward for their more disciplined effort with the ball than England, which started when South Africa made an early breakthrough, Tammy Beaumont caught at slip. That brought together England’s most experienced pair, Edwards and Taylor. The latter immediately picked the right bowler to begin showing her class against, taking two fours off Marabata Klaas’ first four balls, before Edwards added a third to get England going. From there, Edwards was the aggressor. She was strong through the covers and against the full delivery but could not assert herself against the spin. She only faced one ball from van Niekerk before trying a reverse sweep against Suné Luus only to be bowled. Two overs later Luus took a good catch of her own bowling to send Amy Jones on her way and South Africa had created some pressure. They gave away just one boundary between the 10th and 14th over and should have had Taylor out too but the chance to long-off was put down. With six overs to go, England were stumbling on 92 for 3 but Taylor was still there. Her fifty came off 44 balls, picking up a Luus full toss and sending it over cow corner. Heather Knight took that as the cue to get going and danced down the track to hit Luus in the same area, but for six. Taylor showed off the reverse-sweep and Knight the slog sweep before Ismail ended their stand when she had Knight caught at deep midwicket. Two runs-outs in the final over, including Taylor, kept England below 160 and South Africa had done enough to make history.

IPL opener to be held in Mumbai after High Court adjourns hearing

The opening match of IPL 2016 will be played in Mumbai on April 9 as scheduled after the Bombay High Court adjourned a matter related to the hosting of matches in the drought-hit state of Maharashtra

Raunak Kapoor07-Apr-20162:03

‘BCCI can breathe a sigh of relief till the next hearing’

The opening match of IPL 2016 will be played in Mumbai on April 9 as scheduled after the Bombay High Court adjourned a matter related to the hosting of matches in the drought-hit state of Maharashtra. While hearing a Public Interest Litigation on Wednesday and Thursday, the High Court had sought an explanation from the BCCI and the three state associations on why water should be “wasted” on IPL matches in Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur following a severe state-wide drought in recent months. The matter will next be heard on April 12.While the division bench, comprising Justices VM Kanade and MS Karnik, has not yet passed an order, it has asked the Maharashtra government and Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, to file replies outlining plans to address the issue of water shortage in the state. The court has also asked for a report on how the water suppliers for organisations like the BCCI are getting water from. The Advocate General’s office, appearing on behalf of the state, contended that 21,000 litres of water were sanctioned to the Wankhede Stadium for use per day, 0.00058% of the water utilised by city of Mumbai.”We don’t care about a tournament like the IPL. Their interests are purely commercial and to mint money,” the court said on Thursday. “But just because they can pay for water tankers providing water at a premium rate, while others can’t afford it, means there is a problem that the state has failed to identify and address.”The state authorities must, therefore, find out where the BCCI’s water suppliers get their water from. That is not the BCCI’s prerogative, it is the state’s.”While the court stressed on the accountability of civic agencies, it also criticised the arguments made by the BCCI counsel in response to the PIL filed by Loksatta Movement, a Hyderabad-based NGO, which had demanded relocation of IPL matches from Maharashtra. The board’s senior counsel, Rafique Dada, said that less water was used at the grounds during the IPL in comparison to preparations for an international match.”For international matches, there is a requirement for pitches to be watered 48 hours prior to the match, but for IPL matches, it is just watered twice a day on the day of the match.” Dada submitted. “Therefore, if taken to its logical conclusion, there is less water used during the IPL than otherwise.”Dada added that apart from watering pitches, the remaining usage of water was “routine” by the standards of “all international stadia for its day-to-day maintenance”. He also argued that prohibiting such day-to-day maintenance would lead pitches and grounds of international standards to “die a natural death”.In response, Justice Kanade observed: “We were expecting you (the board) to show some consideration or at least submit that you will consider using the water for the tournament responsibly. But here you are almost suggesting that grounds and pitches are more important than people who are dying without water in the state.”Arshil Shah, who represented the petitioners, insisted the court pass an interim order to stop the IPL matches in Maharashtra until the report from the state and civic agencies is submitted. The court rejected the suggestion. “Let the report be submitted, if it shows that moving the matches out of the state will help address the water drought situation, then we shall consider,” the bench said. The judges also stated that despite the timing of the PIL, the issue of a state-wide drought cannot be ignored: “We agree that the timing of the Petitioner just days before the start of the tournament shows they may not have the best intentions at heart, but the larger issue of a state-wide drought cannot be ignored.”Overall Maharashtra is scheduled to host 20 matches in the ninth edition of the IPL. Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai will host eight matches, including the tournament opener on April 9 and the final on May 29. Nine matches have been allotted to the Maharashtra Cricket Association stadium in Pune, including the Eliminator on May 25 and Qualifier 2 on May 27, while three matches will be played at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur, designated as home games for Kings XI Punjab.

Illness keeps Gambhir off KKR flight

A round-up of IPL news on April 15, 2015

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Apr-2015Gautam Gambhir, the Kolkata Knight Riders captain, is not travelling with his team-mates to Pune ahead of their clash against Kings XI Punjab. “Cramps, weakness and fever…bad timing,” Gambhir tweeted. “Living on khichdee and curd-rice…”

Knight Riders face Kings XI on April 18, which gives Gambhir a decent window of time to recover and join his team in time for the match.Boult ahead of Steyn – WarnerDavid Warner, the Sunrisers Hyderabad captain, has said that on current form Trent Boult is “just ahead” of Dale Steyn, who has not been included in the XI for Sunrisers’ first two games. Boult, with four wickets in two matches, is the leading wicket-taker for the team.”Trent Boult has been in fantastic form. Look at how he bowled in the World Cup. He was the best bowler barring Mitchell Starc,” Warner said. “The condition suited him [Bangalore] here and suited him in the last game. We feel Trent is just ahead of Dale. We will definitely use Dale in the tournament … At the moment Trent is going fantastic so Dale just misses out.”Watson targets return in next home game
Shane Watson, the Rajasthan Royals’ captain, is eyeing a return to the team for the home game against Chennai Super Kings on April 19. “I got hit around the hip during the first training session of the tournament and it has taken a bit of time to recover,” Watson told . “We are going to travel to Vizag overnight, so it’s going to be touch and go for the next game. I will surely be back in the team for our game here against the Chennai Super Kings.”Royals, on a three-match winning streak under Steven Smith’s leadership, face Sunrisers Hyderabad in Visakhapatnam on April 16.Vijay looking to make it big
M Vijay, the Kings XI Punjab opener, is one of the two Indian batsmen to score two centuries in the IPL and he has said he is looking forward to a couple more this eason. “I don’t think openers can ever blame (anything) because we have got 20 overs to go and play,” Vijay told . “If I can play out around 15-16 overs I will be somewhere close to my hundred. So I have got the best opportunity; I cannot have any problems with that. Obviously I am happy in that way and I am looking forward for maybe a couple of more (centuries) this season.”Curbing his natural aggression has brought Vijay success in Test cricket but in IPL, he is looking to, “not do that! Not to curb yourself, but just go and express yourself and give the start the team requires,” he said.Vijay’s idol, not surprisingly, is another stylist. “I always liked Mark Waugh,” he said. “I am a Mark Waugh fan. I was crazy about him when I was a kid. I don’t know why, but I liked the way he carried himself in the field, the way he was and everything about him.”Anderson keen on finishing touches
Corey Anderson, the Mumbai Indians allrounder, has said that he wants to improve as a finisher. With two half-centuries, Anderson is the leading run-scorer for his team. “We had (Michael) Hussey last year with us,” he said. “He was an unbelievable finisher and so was Michael Bevan. These guys finished games and made it look easy. I have been able to put myself into positions where I can potentially win the game but I tend to get out just before doing so. I am hoping that with a bit of experience and time I’ll start learning these things. You learn to put the pieces together.”

'I was in a trance-like mode' – Srikar Bharat

“I can see you playing like Sehwag,” Andhra captain Mohammed Kaif had kept telling Srikar Bharat and the 21-year old lived up to the praise, becoming the first wicketkeeper to make a triple-century in the Ranji Trophy

Arun Venugopal07-Feb-2015″I can see you playing like Sehwag,” Andhra captain Mohammed Kaif kept telling Srikar Bharat and the 21-year old lived up to the praise and become the first wicketkeeper to make a triple-century in the Ranji Trophy. His 311-ball 308 helped Andhra rack up 548 for 5 and by close of the second day and they had knocked out eight Goa wickets in Ongole.Srikar didn’t remember much of the highlights from his 504-minute marathon, punctuated with 38 fours and half-a-dozen sixes and was surprised when told about his record: “Oh, is it? I don’t know. I wasn’t aware of anything. Right from ball one, my focus was on batting as long as I could.”Before it could be viewed as a well-practised cliché, his elaboration made it seem otherwise. “From a very young age, I have never looked at the scorecard. Frankly, it only makes you more nervous,” he told ESPNcricinfo.Nervous he wasn’t when he went about dismantling Goa’s bowlers and ensured Andhra chugged along at over 4 runs per over for 123 of them. “I remember batting for one-and-a-half days, but I was at a stage where nothing had an effect on me. People were clapping, team-mates were clapping, and I was acknowledging. But I don’t remember other details. I was in a trance[-like] mode, to be honest. I was interested only in watching the ball and playing it,” he said. One look at Andhra’s scorecard, and you think the pitch is the stuff of batsmen’s fantasies, with two of the top-three batsmen scoring big hundreds, and the other tallying 63. It wasn’t quite the case.”The wicket was green, but it didn’t do much,” Srikar said. “Or, at least I didn’t feel it. Obviously it was doing a bit, but between balls I told myself to watch the ball, and play it. That [talking to myself] went on throughout the innings.”[Given] the flow I was in, I was shuffling in the crease and unsettling the bowlers.”Srikar’s restless nature goes back to when he was 12 years old. “He would keep wickets alongside me when I trained at the Andhra nets,” MSK Prasad, the ACA cricket operations director, said. “Srikar would listen to me talk, and imitate me. He was a very energetic cricketer, hyper-active actually. His keeping has improved in the last two years, but he needs to be more consistent.”Consistency is a trait Srikar has sought to fine-tune with the help of Krishna Rao, Andhra’s assistant coach, who has mentored him since childhood. “I can’t say [that I have become more consistent], but I am more mature and my understanding of the game is better.”Playing in India, you learn front-foot strokes, but neglect back-foot play, because wickets aren’t conducive for that,” he said. “Right from the start of this season, Krishna Rao sir and I worked on my cut and pull every day. All that learning helped me in this game.”Srikar’s experience with the Young Stars team in the TNCA-first division league has also helped hone his batting: “We don’t get similar wickets in every game there. It gives you a better idea of your own capacity, and that has helped me play hard cricket after coming back to Andhra.”Andhra could be in contention for the knockouts should they win here, but they would be knocked out if Himachal Pradesh secure a first-innings lead.”We badly want to play in the Elite groups,” Srikar said. “It’s there on our minds. But we can’t control results. Only the intent is in your hands. That’s what Kaif has been telling us.”As an opener, Srikar admitted to often fretting over technique and once more, it was Kaif who helped unclutter his mind. “He would tell me that technique was important, but wasn’t everything. [You have it in you to do well, and play long innings. Whatever technique you have, play with it]. Just trust yourself, and play.”And Kaif has set Srikar a steep goal as well: ” [If you don’t play for India with such talent, you will regret it one day].”

Ashwin, Dhawan make it nine in a row

India took their winning streak in World Cup matches to nine, and also maintained their record of bowling oppositions out in this World Cup

The Report by Sidharth Monga10-Mar-2015
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Ireland have already scalped West Indies and Zimbabwe in this World Cup•Getty ImagesIndia confirmed the top spot in their group, took their winning streak in World Cup matches to nine, their longest and now only behind the great Australian run between 1999 and 2011, and also maintained their record of bowling oppositions out in this World Cup, claiming their 50th wicket in five matches in the 49th over of Ireland’s innings. Ireland scored the highest score against India in this World Cup, William Porterfield and Paul Stirling registered the best partnership – 89 – against them, Niall O’Brien came within one run of the best individual score against their unbeaten opponents, but India’s excellent offspin bowling and aggressive captaincy restricted them to 259, well below par on a flat pitch, small Seddon Park boundaries and given Ireland’s weak bowling. Shikhar Dhawan, with his second hundred this World Cup, and Rohit Sharma knocked the runs off with ease.Porterfield and Stirling attacked the Indian quicks with gusto, reaching 57 in nine overs before R Ashwin dragged them back. A period of quick overs and slow runs followed, and when Niall O’Brien began to pull Ireland back out, Ashwin came back to start another slide. Ireland went from 206 for 3 to their eventual middling total. This was the first time any batting side tested India. Unlike, say South Africa, India refused to go on the defensive. Ravindra Jadeja didn’t have a great day, but Suresh Raina filled in superbly. He took out Ed Joyce to go with Ashwin’s scalps of Stirling and the in-form Andy Balbirnie. Between them Ashwin and Raina bowled 20 overs for 78 runs. That’s where the match turned. When spin came on in the 10th over, with the run rate over six and no wicket down, you would have forgiven a few other established captains defensive fields. MS Dhoni, the best captain of spin in limited-overs cricket, had a slip, a leg slip, and men saving singles even after the Powerplay was over. It also asked a lot of the bowlers. Anything half bad was bound to go for boundaries. Jadeja was only half bad in the 14th over, and was taken for a four and a six. Dhoni had no qualms taking him off and going to Raina immediately.Even before Raina came on, though, Stirling tried to chip Ashwin over cover. Ashwin had bowled until then 17 balls for 12 runs, giving nothing away. It required Stirling to manufacture something. He tried, but could not open the face enough, and holed out to long-off. Now Raina and Ashwin began to run through their overs quite economically. The pressure was palpable. Dhoni could read the batsmen’s minds. He told Raina Joyce was under pressure and looking for a big hit. Raina stayed accurate. Joyce looked for a forceful back-foot shot to a full ball. Bowled.Overs flew by. When Niall O’Brien took risks against Rohit Sharma in the 30th over and hit two fours, India had bowled the 15 preceding overs for 45 runs and surely in under 45 minutes. The first sign of pace – Mohit Sharma – in 23 overs meant Ireland felt obliged to push the scoring. Except that Mohit didn’t provide any pace, and Porterfield fell to a slower ball. This wicket was as much Mohit’s as the spinners’ who had created the pressure.Niall O’Brien wasn’t done yet, though. In the Powerplay he mounted another attack, and India were tested yet again by the 61-run stand between him and Balbirnie. And again Ashwin provided the answers, getting Balbirnie on the sweep in the 39th over. Mohammed Shami chipped in immediately with Kevin O’Brien’s wicket, and Niall O’Brien found himself under pressure again amid the falling wickets. When he moved across the stumps to try to hit Shami into the leg side, he chipped straight to square leg in the 43rd over. It was now going to be difficult for Ireland to bat out the overs. They couldn’t.To turn this chase into a contest, Ireland needed early wickets. Dhawan provided them two opportunities, but John Mooney and Porterfield dropped him on 5 and 10 respectively. Now Dhawan has a sensational record when he is dropped. Even against South Africa he was dropped by Hashim Amla. At 174 he and Rohit put together India’s biggest opening stand in World Cups, and their partnership aggregate soared to 1760 runs, the fourth-highest for India.Dhawan moved to No. 2 on the runs list this World Cup, second behind Kumar Sangakkara. Once he reached the fifty Dhawan accelerated even as Rohit fell to a somewhat lazy dab, playing Stuart Thompson on. Dhawan went from 50 off 54 to 96 off 74 before bringing up the hundred with the 84th ball he faced and getting out to the 85th. However, India needed only 70 at that time, and got them without drama.

Since then, the teams have only met in one other Test rubber, in 2012, when South Africa took the Test mace off England. Their last Test series defeat to England came at home in 2004-05.”England are the best supported team away from home and once more we look forward to welcoming their legion of fans together with their players and team management. The well-known ‘Barmy Army’ always adds charm to the on-field competition,” Haroon Lorgat, CSA CEO said. “The tour has already drawn huge interest and promises to be the highlight of our summer with four Test matches being played.”While South Africa are currently clear at the top of the Test rankings, despite briefly being overtaken by Australia, England are down in fourth after losing 5-0 in Australia and 1-0 at home to Sri Lanka before beating India. They have a concentrated period of one-day cricket before the World Cup but will then play 17 Tests in nine months up to the end of the South Africa tour.England’s managing director, Paul Downton, said: “Any tour of South Africa is special and as the Proteas currently set the benchmark in Test and ODI cricket it will be a real challenge which our emerging team will relish. We can be assured of fantastic support in South Africa from the thousands of loyal supporters who always follow us around the country – particularly at the Boxing Day Test in Durban and the New Year Test at Newlands in Cape Town.”
