Adams, Davies, Gressel & the MLS Bargain XI

A pair of teenagers and a trio of New York Red Bulls headline Goal's selections as the best values, based on salary, in Major League Soccer

Salaries in Major League Soccer continue to rise, and have seen a considerable spike since the infusion of targeted allocation money in the past two seasons. That has led to a near doubling of the number of million-dollar salaries in the league, and a sizable jump in the number of players making more than $500,000.

That doesn't mean there still aren't some super-sized bargains to be had. Players signed via homegrown player deals and those who enter the league via the MLS draft continue to give MLS teams a steady stream of bargains, several of which make up the squad chosen by Goal to be part of the MLS Bargain XI, the best values in the league.

Here is the 2018 MLS Bargain XI, with salaries based on guaranteed compensation as released by the MLS players union last week .

Greg BartramGK Alex Bono, Toronto FC, $102,200The 24-year-old goalkeeper is in the midst of his second full season as Toronto FC's starter and is continuing to show improvement, building on his MLS Cup-winning 2017 season. His exploits in TFC's CONCACAF Champions League run turned heads, and he has also broken into the U.S. national team picture. Still playing on his rookie contract, Bono should be securing a new contract soon, assuming he doesn't head to Europe via transfer.AdvertisementRB Julian Gressel, Atlanta United, $111,250A midfielder who has thrived this season since being moved into a right wing-back role, Gressel has carried over the success from his MLS Rookie of the Year award-winning 2017 into the 2018 season. He has been one of the key reasons Tata Martino has seen his team enjoy such success playing in a 3-5-2 formation. The 24-year-old German-born standout should be drawing attention from scouts and will have a strong case for a new contract this winter.Mark J. RebilasCB Tim Parker, New York Red Bulls, $115,935How is Parker so underpaid? He's still playing on his original rookie contract, which expires at the end of this season. He is in line for a big payday this winter, either in Europe or in a new MLS deal. The Vancouver Whitecaps traded him rather than making him one of the league's highest-paid defenders. Since joining the Red Bulls, Parker has been outstanding and has helped his new team forge the best defense in club history.ENJOYED THIS STORY?

CB Aaron Long, New York Red Bulls $73,125A repeat selection on the MLS Bargain XI, Long has followed up his breakout 2017 season with a strong start to 2018. His skill on the ball, coupled with an improving defensive skill set, make him one of the league's most underrated defenders. It shouldn't be long before the 25-year-old central defender secures a new contract with the Red Bulls.

The end of the road for Aaron Ramsdale? Arsenal interest in goalkeeper David Raya suggests Gunners' cult hero's days are numbered

Mikel Arteta's pursuit of Brentford's No.1 is unsurprising as it became clear during last season's title run-in that he needs a better goalkeeper

The confirmation of Arsenal's interest in signing David Raya upset some supporters, which was hardly surprising. The Gunners' first-choice goalkeeper, Aaron Ramsdale, is something of a cult hero at the Emirates. He may have only arrived in north London from Sheffield United in the summer of 2021, but it wasn't long before he was regularly winning Arsenal Player of the Month awards, which are voted for by the fans.

And his popularity wasn't just secured due his acrobatics in between the sticks, even if they undoubtedly played a part. For example, goalkeeping icon Peter Schmeichel described the way in which he kept out a free-kick from Leicester's James Maddison in October 2021 as "the best save I've seen for years". Ramsdale also became a firm fan favourite for his very obvious love of playing for Arsenal. As a result, the scepticism which surrounded his £24 million ($31m) signing soon gave way to adoration.

Ramsdale was a player who wore his heart on his sleeve and the crowd loved him for it. His sense of humour also helped, of course, with Ramsdale appearing in an amusing ad which also featured Gunners great David Seaman.

Getty'Honoured that you guys have welcomed me'

When he signed a contract extension in May of this year, he even publicly thanked the fans for the way in which they had warmed to a player who had been relegated in his two previous seasons in the Premier League – first with Sheffield United and then again at Bournemouth.

"I know you guys probably weren't overly excited by my signing – and I totally get it," he confessed. "I don't have any right to come here and expect you all to rate me from the get-go. This is a huge club and it's had some top-class goalkeepers along the way. But fair play, once I got into the team and I got my chance, I felt like we understood each other a lot more. I feel your love, and I feel like you feel mine as well.

"Hopefully, you get the idea that I give everything out there… I know I'm not from around here, but you lot make me feel like I am. I get messages and love from people all around the world, so I know how big the club is.

"You guys have taken my family in, making my dad feel like a superstar. It really gives a family feel to the football club. You make matchday so special and I can't imagine anywhere else for my home stadium to be, or my home. I feel honoured that you guys have welcomed me in and I feel honoured that the staff want me to stay. So, it was the easiest decision in the world to commit my future, to The Arsenal. So, let's keep moving forward as a club, and make some more special memories."

AdvertisementGettyWhy Areta wants Raya

However, there is now the distinct possibility that his mutual love affair will end in heartbreak because Arsenal's mere interest in Raya suggests that Arteta is not entirely happy with Ramsdale – and that's entirely understandable.

It's been reported that the Spanish manager is simply trying to strengthen his squad. He allegedly wants two quality players competing for every starting sport – which is obviously the dream of every manager. However, the Raya transfer talk clearly spells trouble for Ramsdale – just as his signing signalled the end of Bernd Leno's spell as Arsenal's No.1. After all, it's not like Arsenal are going to pay more than £40m ($50m) for a new goalkeeper and leave him sitting on the bench.

There's a reason why Bayern Munich are also chasing Raya: he was outstanding for Brentford last season. As any Fantasy Football fan will tell you, he scored more points than any other goalkeeper in the Premier League. He kept 12 clean sheets – just two fewer than Ramsdale, who was playing in a title-challenging team – and had a far better save percentage (77 to 68.6).

(C)Getty ImagesArteta wants an upgrade on Ramsdale

However, the real reason why Arsenal are looking for a new No.1 is clearly Ramsdale's unreliability. No goalkeeper made more errors leading to shots in the Premier League last season (six), while two of his mistakes resulted in goals, including the wayward pass that led to the Gunners falling 1-0 behind just 28 seconds into their costly draw with Southampton at the Emirates.

Indeed, by that stage, it was clear that Arsenal weren't really strong enough from a defensive perspective to win the title. They ended up conceding 43 goals in total – 10 more than Manchester City and Newcastle, and as many as Manchester United – and suffered a dreadful dip following William Saliba's season-ending injury.

The arrival of the versatile Jurrien Timber should help address the lack of strength in depth at the back but Arteta clearly – and rightly – feels that he requires an upgrade on Ramsdale.

Getty ImagesRamsdale not an elite goalkeeper

Erik ten Hag reached a similar conclusion at Manchester United, ruthlessly disposing of David de Gea – who won the Premier League's Golden Glove last season – because he wanted a goalkeeper as good at playing passes out from the back as keeping clean sheets. And the Dutchman is being commended for his conviction.

Arteta should be just as lauded for his clear-sightedness. Ramsdale is undeniably a good goalkeeper, but not good enough for a team with title aspirations. If Arsenal were to let him leave, he wouldn't even be considered by another elite European team.

Truth be told, Ramsdale wouldn't even rank among the top 20 goalkeepers in the game today. Let's face it, this is by no means a golden era for English goalkeepers and yet the 25-year-old was an unused substitute at the 2022 World Cup, with the desperately limited Jordan Pickford deemed a more trustworthy option by national team coach Gareth Southgate.

This shows that all is not well with the company in handling Anti-Corruption Code issues

Man Utd player ratings vs Luton: Is Rasmus Hojlund the true heir to Ruud van Nistlerooy? £72m man keeps up incredible scoring run & Kobbie Mainoo shows his class again to help lacklustre Red Devils maintain top-four push

The Danish striker made it seven goals in his last six matches to fire Erik ten Hag's side to a narrow victory against a determined Luton

Rasmus Hojlund could not score in his first 14 Premier League games but is now truly on fire and his double was enough to give Manchester United a scrappy, barely deserved 2-1 win at Luton Town.

The Dane scored for the sixth league game in a row to give United the lead after just 40 seconds, staying alert to pounce on a Luton error and calmly round goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski. In the seventh minute he knocked in an Alejandro Garnacho strike into the net with his chest to put the visitors in full command.

United could not live up to their dream start, though, and Luton captain Carlton Morris halved the deficit while the Red Devils were lucky not to concede again before the break, while Casemiro was fortunate not to be sent off.

Luton continued to pile on the pressure and United failed to take their chances on the break, with Garnacho particularly wasteful. They had to ride out a nervy few minutes, helped by the unstoppable Jonny Evans, and eventually secured a fourth consecutive league victory, taking them within three points of fifth-placed Tottenham and five of Aston Villa in fourth.

After a dire first half of the season, the hunt for Champions League football is truly on. GOAL rates Man United's players from Kenilworth Road…

Getty Goalkeeper & Defence

Andre Onana (6/10):

Could have done more to put Morris off. His footwork helped slow the game down and ease the pressure.

Diogo Dalot (5/10):

Couldn't cope with Alfie Doughty for large spells and messed up a potential one-on-one with Thomas Kaminski.

Harry Maguire (5/10):

A bit of a wobbly performance. Late to numerous tackles and could have been booked long before he finally saw yellow. Taken off at half-time as a precaution.

Raphael Varane (8/10):

A highly effective last wall of defence, making block after block after Luton breached midfield and the flanks.

Luke Shaw (6/10):

Had some nice passages of play and put out numerous fires, including getting a booking for a meaty challenge. Taken off before half-time amid fears of another injury.

AdvertisementGettyMidfield

Kobbie Mainoo (8/10):

A class act. His nimble footwork helped United play their way out of Luton's aggressive press and he also read the game superbly.

Casemiro (5/10):

Very fortunate not to earn another booking for taking out Barkley, with Erik ten Hag sensibly removing him at half-time. Despite his struggles against Barkley, he sparked the move for the first goal with a punt downfield, which Hojlund capitalised on.

Bruno Fernandes (5/10):

Made plenty of sloppy passes but worked hard to contain Luton late on and made a vital block to prevent Gabriel Osho from levelling.

GettyAttack

Alejandro Garnacho (4/10):

Made lots of bad decisions, above all when he bungled his attempt to dribble around Kaminski. At least he got an assist.

Rasmus Hojlund (9/10):

That's seven goals in six matches for the Dane, who is starting to look like the true heir to Ruud van Nistelrooy – United's last proper 'fox in the box'. He showed awareness and composure for his early goal and cheekiness for his second. Also held the ball up superbly.

Marcus Rashford (5/10):

Some promising moments but overall a disappointment. Should have released Garnacho far earlier in the first half but made amends with a dream pass, which the Argentina international squandered.

Getty ImagesSubs & Manager

Victor Lindelof (6/10):

Did better deputising at left-back than last week at Villa but still picked up a yellow card.

Scott McTominay (6/10):

Brought on at half-time and held the ball up well while working hard in defence.

Jonny Evans (8/10):

Outstanding when he came on, heading and booting away every ball that came his way. Also showed impressive stamina to storm forward in the last minute.

Sofyan Amrabat (N/A):

Brought on in the 86th minute to shore up the defence and see out the win.

Erik ten Hag (6/10):

His substitutes made sense and averted potential red cards but the way his side had to cling on for so much of the second half should concern him.

Ashwin, Dhawan make it nine in a row

India took their winning streak in World Cup matches to nine, and also maintained their record of bowling oppositions out in this World Cup

The Report by Sidharth Monga10-Mar-2015
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Ireland have already scalped West Indies and Zimbabwe in this World Cup•Getty ImagesIndia confirmed the top spot in their group, took their winning streak in World Cup matches to nine, their longest and now only behind the great Australian run between 1999 and 2011, and also maintained their record of bowling oppositions out in this World Cup, claiming their 50th wicket in five matches in the 49th over of Ireland’s innings. Ireland scored the highest score against India in this World Cup, William Porterfield and Paul Stirling registered the best partnership – 89 – against them, Niall O’Brien came within one run of the best individual score against their unbeaten opponents, but India’s excellent offspin bowling and aggressive captaincy restricted them to 259, well below par on a flat pitch, small Seddon Park boundaries and given Ireland’s weak bowling. Shikhar Dhawan, with his second hundred this World Cup, and Rohit Sharma knocked the runs off with ease.Porterfield and Stirling attacked the Indian quicks with gusto, reaching 57 in nine overs before R Ashwin dragged them back. A period of quick overs and slow runs followed, and when Niall O’Brien began to pull Ireland back out, Ashwin came back to start another slide. Ireland went from 206 for 3 to their eventual middling total. This was the first time any batting side tested India. Unlike, say South Africa, India refused to go on the defensive. Ravindra Jadeja didn’t have a great day, but Suresh Raina filled in superbly. He took out Ed Joyce to go with Ashwin’s scalps of Stirling and the in-form Andy Balbirnie. Between them Ashwin and Raina bowled 20 overs for 78 runs. That’s where the match turned. When spin came on in the 10th over, with the run rate over six and no wicket down, you would have forgiven a few other established captains defensive fields. MS Dhoni, the best captain of spin in limited-overs cricket, had a slip, a leg slip, and men saving singles even after the Powerplay was over. It also asked a lot of the bowlers. Anything half bad was bound to go for boundaries. Jadeja was only half bad in the 14th over, and was taken for a four and a six. Dhoni had no qualms taking him off and going to Raina immediately.Even before Raina came on, though, Stirling tried to chip Ashwin over cover. Ashwin had bowled until then 17 balls for 12 runs, giving nothing away. It required Stirling to manufacture something. He tried, but could not open the face enough, and holed out to long-off. Now Raina and Ashwin began to run through their overs quite economically. The pressure was palpable. Dhoni could read the batsmen’s minds. He told Raina Joyce was under pressure and looking for a big hit. Raina stayed accurate. Joyce looked for a forceful back-foot shot to a full ball. Bowled.Overs flew by. When Niall O’Brien took risks against Rohit Sharma in the 30th over and hit two fours, India had bowled the 15 preceding overs for 45 runs and surely in under 45 minutes. The first sign of pace – Mohit Sharma – in 23 overs meant Ireland felt obliged to push the scoring. Except that Mohit didn’t provide any pace, and Porterfield fell to a slower ball. This wicket was as much Mohit’s as the spinners’ who had created the pressure.Niall O’Brien wasn’t done yet, though. In the Powerplay he mounted another attack, and India were tested yet again by the 61-run stand between him and Balbirnie. And again Ashwin provided the answers, getting Balbirnie on the sweep in the 39th over. Mohammed Shami chipped in immediately with Kevin O’Brien’s wicket, and Niall O’Brien found himself under pressure again amid the falling wickets. When he moved across the stumps to try to hit Shami into the leg side, he chipped straight to square leg in the 43rd over. It was now going to be difficult for Ireland to bat out the overs. They couldn’t.To turn this chase into a contest, Ireland needed early wickets. Dhawan provided them two opportunities, but John Mooney and Porterfield dropped him on 5 and 10 respectively. Now Dhawan has a sensational record when he is dropped. Even against South Africa he was dropped by Hashim Amla. At 174 he and Rohit put together India’s biggest opening stand in World Cups, and their partnership aggregate soared to 1760 runs, the fourth-highest for India.Dhawan moved to No. 2 on the runs list this World Cup, second behind Kumar Sangakkara. Once he reached the fifty Dhawan accelerated even as Rohit fell to a somewhat lazy dab, playing Stuart Thompson on. Dhawan went from 50 off 54 to 96 off 74 before bringing up the hundred with the 84th ball he faced and getting out to the 85th. However, India needed only 70 at that time, and got them without drama.

Saka and Son will be hoping to make the difference when returning to their day job, but they have been relaxing ahead of competitive action by taking in a visit to London Fashion Week. They attended the Burberry spring-summer 2024 show at Highbury Fields in Islington – which is very much Arsenal territory – and were seated alongside one another on the front row.

Saka and Son did share a brief conversation, but looked a little awkward as cameras were turned away from the catwalk and in their direction. The pair were eventually split up when Crystal Palace playmaker Eberechi Eze – an England colleague of Saka – turned up and filled a seat between them.
