Farke must now axe Leeds dud who earns as much as Piroe & Joseph

Leeds United have impressively won ten of their 13 games at Elland Road this Championship season so far, but their very first game in front of the home masses for 2025 didn’t bring about another sweet victory.

Instead, it was a rather drab draw that was served up, as Danny Batth scored a dramatic late equaliser for Blackburn Rovers to close the contest at 1-1.

Now, it’s up to Daniel Farke to pick up his troops ahead of a big 2025, with the January transfer window now giving him time to add in some new additions to sprinkle his side with even more quality.

Of course, Leeds haven’t always been prolific spenders in this window, as was seen this time last year when the Whites went about their business conservatively.

Leeds' past January business

In the end, the only capture that took place back in January 2024 was the underwhelming loan acquisition of Connor Roberts from Burnley.

Safe to say, Roberts failed to truly fit into his new surroundings, with just one goal and one assist mustered up by the Welshman from 15 forgettable displays, before he bounced back at Turf Moor to become a regular under Scott Parker.

It could be argued that such a lack of business negatively impacted Leeds’ promotion chances, with the Whites squad becoming stretched, leading to a crushing playoff final defeat to Southampton.

Now, however, the Whites could be more proactive, with rumours already linking Farke’s men to the likes of James McAtee and Nico Elvedi to boost the camp.

Celtic transfer target Joe Gelhardt in action for Leeds United.

Whilst there might well be a change in narrative regarding incomings, this January ahead could also see some exits occur, with this forgotten Whites figure in desperate need of a change of scenery.

Joe Gelhardt's time at Leeds

Once a heavily talked about prospect in West Yorkshire, Joe Gelhardt has really suffered from a lack of game-time over the past couple of seasons.

The Liverpool-born centre-forward was even labelled as “brilliant” by Jamie Carragher in 2021, when he was regularly making waves in the Whites first-team as a golden young gem.

Long gone now are the days where Gelhardt would be linking up with Raphinha to fire home dramatic strikes like these, however, with the ex-Wigan Athletic man only making a meagre three appearances for Farke’s men so far this season.

Therefore, the much-maligned 22-year-old surely wouldn’t refuse an opportunity to leave Elland Road behind this January, as suitors such as Wrexham begin to allegedly sniff around.

Joe Gelhardt

After all, when Gelhardt was at the peak of his powers donning Leeds white, he would find the back of the net six times playing in both the Premier League and Championship, meaning he could well light up the third tier if Phil Parkinson’s men do swoop in.

More pressingly, away from wanting to give Gelhardt more game-time – whether that be through a loan exit or a permanent route away – Leeds will also want the reserve attacker off the books soon owing to his steep £15k-per-week wage.

Amazingly, the on-the-fringes striker pockets the same salary as first-team regulars Joel Piroe and Mateo Joseph, with Piroe on to nine goals for the season in the Championship now as an important figure up top.

Moreover, Joseph will also likely play a key part in Leeds’ ongoing hunt for promotion based on the number of appearances above, whilst Gelhardt stares the exit door in the face.

With Queens Park Rangers also reportedly keen on his services, expect the 22-year-old to be off at some point across this frantic January period.

Shanaka's 25-ball 54* scripts stunning victory for Sri Lanka

Hosts smash a record 59 off last three overs to deny Australia 3-0 sweep

Andrew Fidel Fernando11-Jun-2022
Dasun Shanaka made a furious late charge at a total that always seemed beyond Sri Lanka, crashing sixes over midwicket, smoking fours down the ground, and through cover, batting desperately to bring his team some joy out of the series. There was a bit of luck, but not that much. A wide that shouldn’t have been called, maybe. Australia’s bowlers missing their lengths a little more often than they usually would. But in the presence of packed and uproarious Pallekele crowd, Shanaka hunted down 75 off the last five overs in the company of Chamika Karunaratne, who occasionally produced big hits himself, but was more the captain’s hype man. Shanaka had hit only six off his first 12 balls, but then went into supernova mode, blasting 48 off his next 13 deliveries, taking Josh Hazlewood apart, then Jhye Richardson, then Kane Richardson in the final over, from which 19 had been required.

The last over
As good as the two previous overs had been for Sri Lanka, it didn’t seem like they’d make it in the last one. Shanaka is not particularly good at crashing balls through the offside (deep midwicket and down the ground are his areas). But then the pressure of Shanaka’s outrageous hitting in the previous two overs got to Kane. Or so you’d surmise. He bowled two clear off-side wides first up, which brought the requirement down to 17 off the last over, essentially. Then he bowled two decent deliveries, one of which was hit to sweeper cover, and a slower ball that Sri Lanka’s batters scrambled a bye off.But with 15 needed off the last four, the real magic began for Sri Lanka. Shanaka slashed a slightly overpitched wide ball for four past point – his very first boundary of the innings in that region. Then, when Kane missed a straight yorker, he pummelled him down the ground, easily beating long-off.Next was the shot that, for the first time in the chase, seemed to put Sri Lanka on top. A low full toss, walloped into the sightscreen behind the bowler’s head.Richardson was flustered. He bowled a wide to give the win away. The batters ran a bye just to be safe. The Pallekele crowd was already in raptures. The two previous overs
Where Shanaka really got into his work was against Hazlewood. Sri Lanka needed 58 off 17 balls when Shanaka got the strike. Then he put a quasi-miracle into motion. Two big sixes to start – one over deep midwicket, one over wide long-on. Two fours to follow, through the covers, then down the ground. Hazlewood missed his length on all of those deliveries. The next over, bowled by Jhye Richardson, started with a six, as Jhye tried a slower one, but again missed his length, and was bashed by Shanaka over midwicket. Two fours were to follow here, with Shanaka walloping through midwicket again, after Karunaratne crashed one through deep cover.Perhaps the most controversial moment of the match came when umpire Kumar Dharmasena called a wide off what would have been the last delivery of the over, but which had passed inside the tramlines with the batter (Shanaka) taking a regular guard. Shanaka had left the bowlers no option but to chance this line though.Dasun Shanaka walloped five fours and four sixes•Getty ImagesSL’s top order makes moderate headway
It wasn’t a spectacular start, but Sri Lanka’s top five had at least put their team in a position in which a mild miracle was possible. They made 49 for 1 in the powerplay, for example, which isn’t quite enough to keep up with the required rate, but almost. By the end of the 12th over, Sri Lanka needed 82 off 48 balls, with seven wickets in hand, which seemed tough, but not impossible. They’d lose three wickets rapidly from there, but the runs the top four made (Danushka Gunathilaka 15 off 12, Pathum Nissanka 27 off 25, Charith Asalanka 29 off 19, Bhanuka Rajapaksa 17 off 13) helped set the hosts up. Well, sort of.Australia rampage through the first nine overs
But then, Australia had bossed the early parts of this match so completely, it seemed impossible that Sri Lanka could pull off a consolation win.The first over, bowled by Karunaratne, went for just four runs. Then Aaron Finch and David Warner exploded. Finch went first, crashing Dushmantha Chameera for two fours, then hitting Maheesh Theekshana for consecutive ones. Warner started making quick runs too, hitting through the covers with particular relish.Theekshana got Finch for 29 off 20 eventually. But Australia still motored to 82 for 1 at the end of the ninth over.Stoinis wallops Australia to a big total
Australia’s innings didn’t just have a big start, it also had a massive finish. They’d been 117 for 4 at the end of the 15th over, before Marcus Stoinis and his huge biceps made a dramatic entrance. He pounded Praveen Jayawickrama for a six and two fours in the space of three deliveries, eventually picking up 38 off 23 balls.Matthew Wade and Steve Smith then began to attack, taking 11 off the 18th over, 11 off the 19th, and 16 off the last. All up, Australia had hit 59 off the last five overs. Most times, this should have been a definitive final burst.

Ipswich target unreal £30m Delap rival who’s been "blowing teams away"

They might still be in the relegation zone, but there is a lot to be optimistic about for Ipswich Town at the moment.

Kieran McKenna’s side have won two and drawn one of their last five Premier League games and look like a side ready to climb the table over the coming weeks and months.

There have been brilliant performances across the pitch in recent games, but there can be no doubt about whom the Tractor Boys’ most important player is this season: Liam Delap.

The former Manchester City prospect has been sublime for the Suffolk side and already has eight league goals to his name this year, so recent reports linking the club to someone who could be his ideal rival this month should excite the fans.

Ipswich chase free-scoring forward

According to a recent report from journalist Graeme Bailey, Ipswich are one of several teams interested in Botafogo star Igor Jesus.

Alongside the Tractor Boys, the report claims that fellow Premier League sides Fulham, Arsenal, Chelsea and West Ham United are all keen on the Brazilian striker.

On top of dealing with the competition, the Suffolk side will also have to make a significant investment if they want the talented forward, as according to the story, he is valued at around £30m.

It could be a costly and complicated transfer to get over the line, but given Jesus’ incredible form, it’s one worth pursuing, especially as he’d be ideal competition for Delap.

Why Jesus would be a great Delap rival

So, when it comes to adding extra competition for your starting striker to the squad, only one metric truly matters: output.

In this regard, Jesus looks to be an excellent option for Ipswich, as he has been in utterly sensational goalscoring form over the last year or so.

For example, in his most recent campaign, the 23-year-old machine scored a whopping 25 goals and provided nine assists in 56 appearances, meaning he maintained an average of a goal involvement every 1.64 games – talk about dangerous.

Goal Involvements per Match

However, what makes that even more impressive is that he played for two sides, spending the first half of the campaign with Shabab Al-Ahli in the UAE and then moving to Botafogo in July.

On top of “blowing teams away” in two leagues across one season, as one Brazilian football expert put it, the Cuiabá-born star also played a pivotal role in securing Botafogo’s first-ever Copa Libertadores and their third domestic title in a brilliant double this year.

Now, with all of that said, if the Tractor Boys do end up signing the “great” number nine, as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, he’d still likely play second fiddle to Delap, and given the Englishman’s own impressive haul of ten goal involvements in 19 Premier League games, that would be entirely expected.

However, with the intensity of the league and the chance of progressing in the FA Cup, there should be plenty of opportunities for the Brazilian to play and, in turn, allow the Winchester-born prospect to rest.

Ultimately, Jesus may not be a household name in English football, but if his form over the last year or so is anything to go by, he’s more than good enough to become one.

Therefore, Ipswich should do what they can to secure his services this month before one of their rivals beats them to him.

PCB raises concern over impact of T20 leagues on international cricket

It has written to the ICC asking for the issue to be discussed at the AGM in July

Umar Farooq16-Jul-2022The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has expressed concern about the rising number of T20 leagues competing for space in the calendar and has written to the ICC suggesting that a working group be formed to evaluate the impact of franchise cricket on international cricket. The PCB outlined its issues in a letter to the ICC earlier this month; it proposed that the ICC CEO head the working group and prepare a report in three months. One of the PCB’s primary concerns is that Pakistan loses the opportunity to play international cricket during an extended window earmarked for the IPL.The IPL has had an unofficial two-month window in the calendar for several years, but in the ICC’s next Future Tours Programme (FTP) from May 2023 to April 2027, a draft of which has been obtained by ESPNcricinfo, the window for the IPL has been extended to two and a half months – from late March to early June. In addition, the ECB and CA have also carved out windows for the Hundred and the BBL in their respective schedules, during which England and Australia will not play international cricket.Related

With several other boards, including the PCB, striving to make space for their own leagues, the draft FTP broadly affirmed the growing primacy of franchise T20 cricket in the international calendar.”One particular agenda Pakistan will have during the [ICC AGM] meeting is the domestic T20 leagues,” PCB CEO Faisal Hasnain said. “We are a little concerned that the proliferation of domestic leagues around the world is sucking time out of the international calendar. There are new leagues that are evolving in two to three months… We want this to be discussed, and form a proper strategy.”Hasnain confirmed that the PCB had written to the ICC expressing its concerns, and it is understood that the ICC has added the issue to the agenda for the AGM in July. The PCB also claimed that two other boards also had similar concerns. In its letter, the PCB stated that it was the role of the ICC to ensure fairness and equal opportunity for its members.ESPNcricinfo LtdThe IPL window is of particular concern for the PCB because its players have not been part of the world’s biggest T20 league since 2008, and though India and Pakistan play each other at ICC and ACC events, they have also not contested a bilateral series since 2012-13 because of strained political relations between the two countries. An extended IPL window in the next FTP would mean that Pakistan will not be able to play top-flight teams during that period, while the other boards get compensated to an extent by receiving a percentage of their players’ IPL salaries. The PCB urged the ICC to come up with a model that helps boards make up the loss in revenue incurred because of a window that is reserved for T20 leagues during the peak season.Since 2016, the Pakistan board has organised its franchise T20 league – the PSL – during its home season between February and March, but there is no window for the tournament in the international calendar. And with the planned increase in the number of PSL teams from 2026, it will be a challenge for the PCB to find space to accommodate its league and bilateral cricket in a packed calendar.According to Hasnain, the draft for the next FTP cycle is 80% complete. A number of tours that are yet to be confirmed could be finalised by the ICC’s AGM on July 25 and 26 in Birmingham, England.

Everton receive reply after tabling loan offer for "wonderful" 24 y/o

Everton have reportedly received a reply from a club after tabling a loan offer for their “wonderful” player, with the Blues looking to sign him during the January transfer window.

Everton transfer news

Sean Dyche’s side continue to limp along this season, producing a string of forgettable performances and getting themselves dragged into another Premier League relegation battle at the bottom of the table.

Reinforcements this month would certainly help Everton pull clear of dangers, with additions needed in various areas of the pitch, as Jaden Philogene looks like he could arrive at Goodison Park. The Blues are in “talks” over a move for the Aston Villa 22-year-old.

Jaden Philogene for Aston Villa.

A new striker and left-back have been mooted in some quarters, with both seen as key positions to strengthen, with former Chelsea winger Hakim Ziyech one player who has been linked with boosting the Blues’ options out wide. He is currently at Galatasaray, but is keen on securing a move away.

Brighton striker Evan Ferguson is also seen as a target for the Blues, as Everton look at possible long-term replacements for Dominic Calvert-Lewin leading the line. Still only 20, there is so much more to come from him in the coming years, and he could grow into a massive player for the Blues.

Everton make loan offer for "wonderful" ace

According to a new update from Fanatik, Everton made a loan offer for the signing of Galatasaray attacker Yunus Akgun, as they look to snap him up in the current transfer window, but his club want to wait until the end of the season to make a decision. Everton’s offer including a permanent move at the end of the loan, but it seems they will have better luck with a straight up permanent offer come the summer.

This is a blow for Everton, should Galatasaray’s stance not change, with Akgun a player who could have made a real impact during the second half of the season and beyond. Football talent scout Jacek Kulig has lauded the winger as a “wonderful” player, while journalist Yakup Cinar also heaped praise on him back in 2022.

Hopefully, things change regarding the situation, allowing Everton to get their man this month, but if not, they should look to bring him in at the end of the current campaign, giving them an injection of attacking quality in the process.

Heinrich Klaasen makes the difference as South Africa out-run England Lions

Visitors atone for Taunton loss and warm up for ODI series with 107-run victory at New Road

ECB Reporters Network14-Jul-2022South Africa 360 for 7 (Klaasen 123, Phehlukwayo 67, van der Dussen 61) beat England Lions 253 (Eskinazi 79) by 107 runsA century from Heinrich Klaasen was the highlight for South Africa as they warmed up for the first of three ODIs against England next week with a comprehensive 107-run win over England Lions at New Road.Stephen Eskinazi’s second excellent knock in 48 hours and a fine all-round performance from Benny Howell proved in vain for the Lions who were eventually dismissed for 253 in 38.2 overs, chasing 361.Eskinazi’s unbeaten 52 had helped the Lions chase down a 319 target when the two sides had met at Taunton on Tuesday, and he followed that up with a composed 79. Howell picked up three wickets and made an enterprising 40 off 33 balls, but the Lions found another demanding chase beyond them on a hybrid pitch.South Africa opted to bat and the Lions new-ball attack of Sam Cook and David Payne provided a searching examination.Cook made the first breakthrough when Janneman Malan inside-edged a catch through to keeper Ben Duckett and the initial powerplay yielded only 49 runs.Lions pace bowler George Scrimshaw, returning to his former home ground, struck in his first over when Reeza Hendricks ballooned the ball off a leading edge to mid off.Rassie van der Dussen showed plenty of enterprise in making 61 off 52 balls including a ramp shot for six off Scrimshaw. But the entry into the attack of Howell brought three wickets in quick succession for the Gloucestershire all-rounderHe produced a superb reflex catch to account to dismiss Aiden Markram and held onto another return chance off a leading edge by van der Dussen.David Miller then went for a big hit against Howell’s nagging accuracy and only found the hands of long-on to leave South Africa on 167 for 5 in the 30th over. But then Klaasen (123) and Andile Phehlukwayo (67) produced rich entertainment for the 3,500 crowd with a partnership of 149 in 17 overs. It was Cook who dismissed the pair in successive overs when he returned for the conclusion of the innings. The Essex pace bowler broke the stand when Phehlukwayo perished at long on and then in the penultimate over Klaasen carved the ball straight to third man.Howell finished with figures of 10-0-58-3 and Cook 10-1-56-3.The Lions innings got off to a terrible start with two wickets falling in the opening over from Proteas captain, Keshav Maharaj, without a run on the board. Will Smeed, who had top-scored with 90 at Taunton, was stumped and then Sam Hain pushed forward to an arm ball and was bowled.Duckett again looked in good form after his 85 on Tuesday and twice collected two boundaries in an over off Lungi Ngidi and Anrich Nortje. There were 10 boundaries in his 44 before he went lbw to Tabraiz Shamsi.Eskinazi had a let-off on 34 against Maharaz when dropped at long-off but he went onto complete a 49-ball half century with four boundaries.Wickets continued to tumble and captain Tom Abell was caught behind attempting a reverse sweep off Tabraiz Shamsi while Adam Hose drilled Phehlukwayo to mid-wicket.Howell struck the same bowler for successives sixes but he and Eskinazi then departed to end the Lions slim hopes.Eskinazi made room for a big hit against Anrich Nortje and edged through to the keeper and Howell was picked up at deep backward square to give Shamsi another scalp. There was some late resistance from Payne (40) who dominated an eighth wicket stand of 54 with Jake Lintott before Ngidi returned bowl him.Paul Collingwood, appointed Lions Head Coach for the two-match series, said: “We put South Africa under a lot of pressure at times. Klaasen had a lot of power at the back end of the innings and got them up to competitive total, but I cannot fault the lads. The one thing I said to them is ‘don’t judge yourselves on results’ but let’s have a look at how we go about our cricket and the approach we have.”Klaasen said: “Hopefully I can keep riding the wave because I am quite happy with where I am at this moment and the way I’ve been striking the ball and I’m in a good mental space. The hard work is paying off and it’s all about doing the right things.”
