Gyokeres’ future remains uncertain as Sporting CP continue to demand a high fee for the striker, far beyond the €60 million (£51m/$69m) fee with €10 million (£8.5m/$11.5m) in add-ons originally anticipated by his camp. Arsenal, once keen on a bargain move, have paused their pursuit as the asking price has climbed. Juventus and Atletico Madrid are both circling, with the Italian side pushing harder in recent days.

Despite interest from abroad, Portuguese outlet Record has claimed that Gyokeres’ main goal is to move to the Premier League and play Champions League football – ideally with Arsenal. The Swedish striker still hopes Mikel Arteta will reignite his interest, believing there’s still a chance of joining the Gunners this summer. His camp, however, may have misjudged the market by expecting a reduced fee that Sporting were never prepared to accept.

Manchester United had also shown interest; however, Gyokeres made it clear he is not tempted. As per the Record, the striker wants to join a team fighting for titles and already in the Champions League – two boxes United can’t tick at the moment. Despite his former boss, Ruben Amorim, being at Old Trafford, the Swede does not believe that a reunion will be as beneficial for his career as a move to Arsenal.

WHAT NEXT FOR GYOKERES?

The situation remains fluid, but as Juventus continue talks and Arsenal weigh up their next move, Gyokeres is left hoping his patience will pay off. The summer drama is only just beginning for the Swedish striker's signature, and it is possible that Sporting's stubbornness could crop up a similar situation as Victor Osimhen faced at Napoli last summer.

Tazmin Brits blitzes century to put South East Stars back on course

Griffiths battles with 92, including century stand with Scrivens, before Gregory seals victory

ECB Reporters Network11-Jul-2023Tazmin Brits’ blistering 66-ball hundred headlined South East Stars’ 19-run win over Sunrisers at Beckenham. The South Africa international hit 10 fours and five sixes on her way to an unbeaten 112 off 72 deliveries as the Stars put up 290 for 9.Sunrisers looked well-positioned to chase down the target after an opening stand worth 143 between Cordelia Griffith and Grace Scrivens was followed by some fine hitting from captain Dane van Niekerk. With 10 overs left, 80 runs were required for victory with nine wickets still in tow.But leg-spinner Danielle Gregory, not introduced into the attack until the 37th over, took four wickets in the space of three overs to turn the tide and end the Stars’ three-match losing streak in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy.Brits’ blast came after the Stars’ openers had established a fine base, with Alexa Stonehouse and Kira Chathli putting on 111 together. The 19-year-old Stonehouse had some fortune, surviving two dropped chances, but she was the first to fifty, which came off 65 deliveries.A fifty for Chathli arrived in the 23rd over, but Stonehouse departed for 51 from the very next delivery, smacking spinner Jodie Grewcock straight into the safe hands of van Niekerk at mid-off.Chathli impressed with her ball-striking down the ground to spin but saw Bryony Smith dismissed for 2 from the other end; attempting to clip Grewcock through the leg-side, the right-hander lobbed a simple catch to van Niekerk at mid-off.The Grewcock and van Niekerk combination struck again in the 29th over when Chathli also couldn’t beat mid-off, her knock ended on 71.Brits had already entered the fray by this stage and enjoyed some fortune, dropped on 1 by Florence Miller in the deep. She found her flow, though, a pair of boundaries in a Grewcock over followed by a six over long-on off Amu Surenkumar. She was given another reprieve on 44 off the final ball of the 35th over and went on to reach her half-century off 41 balls. The 32-year-old then went on to thump her compatriot van Niekerk for two sixes off consecutive legitimate deliveries, and her century arrived in the 48th over.Wickets tumbled from the other end as the innings came to a close, but Brits reverse-swept the final ball for four to finish with a flourish.Griffith and Scrivens then set about eclipsing the opening partnership that Stonehouse and Chathli had put together. The pair brought up 50 in the 13th over of the innings before two brief interruptions of rain followed, the second one taking two overs off the innings and revising the target to 282.Griffith was the more aggressive of the pair, her half-century taking 64 balls while Scrivens took 87 deliveries to get to her fifty. The latter seemed ready to up her rate, hitting Smith down the ground for four off the first ball of the 32nd over. But an attempted reverse-swat two balls later saw her bowled for 59.Van Niekerk was in next, showing her power down the ground and through cover with four boundaries off one Ryana MacDonald-Gay over.Gregory then arrived to made a crucial breakthrough; Griffith was adjudged lbw on 92 as she missed out on a flick off the pads. The leggie struck again in her next over, with Mady Villiers’ attempted cover drive resulting in a thick edge that lobbed up to Kalea Moore at third man. Grewcock was Gregory’s third, but the most vital delivery was the one to remove van Niekerk, the batter sweeping hard but into the hands of short fine leg for 44.Amara Carr hit a quickfire 29 but Gregory’s intervention was a match-winning one.

Mark Coles resigns as Pakistan women's head coach

He has resigned after just four months into his stint citing personal reasons

Danyal Rasool10-Aug-2023Four months after he was appointed head coach of the Pakistan women’s side for the second time, Mark Coles has resigned with immediate effect citing personal reasons. Coles had earlier served as the head coach of the team from 2017 to 2019.The resignation comes at a less-than-ideal team for the women’s side, who take on South Africa in a high-profile series at home that begins on September 1 in Karachi. The sides play three T20Is and three ODIs, with all six games taking place in Karachi. The PCB said a new coach will be announced “in due course” though there is no guarantee a permanent replacement will be in place by the time that series begins.Pakistan have a busy upcoming schedule, playing 15 ODIs and 17 T20Is in the upcoming year. Aside from South Africa, they host the West Indies at home, and travel to Bangladesh, New Zealand and England. It is understood the resignation came as something of a surprise to the PCB, and Coles has not made any public comment on the matter. When he was announced as Pakistan’s head coach alongside Nida Dar as the new captain, he said he was “excited to lead the team in the upcoming events”.”It has been a privilege to work with such a talented group of players and I look forward to the exciting times ahead as we aim to improve our previous performances and achievements,” Coles had said at the time. “We have a lot of potential in the team, and I look forward to helping the players give their best and achieve success on the international stage.”In the end, he would oversee no games during this second stint. He did enjoy a relatively successful time on the pitch when he was first appointed in 2017. Pakistan won nearly half of their ODIs – 7 in 16 – including a famous come-from-behind series win against West Indies. They also won 15 of 32 T20Is before Coles quit because of “family commitments”.The PCB said in a statement that it would “like to extend its gratitude to Mark Coles for his brief stint with the women’s side and wishes him well in his future endeavors.”

Tuchel has been in the spotlight after overseeing an underwhelming 1-0 win over Andorra and a 3-1 defeat to Senegal last time out. The Three Lions remain top of their group in World Cup qualifying, but recent results suggest a big improvement will be needed if Tuchel's side are to make an impact at next summer's tournament.

Gascoigne, who helped England reach the World Cup semi-finals in 1990, says it's not been a great start to life as England boss for Tuchel. The former Tottenham star has also questioned what the atmosphere in the dressing room is like under Tuchel, who is the first German and only the third foreign head coach to lead the Three Lions.

WHAT GASCOIGNE SAID

Gascoigne, speaking exclusively to GOAL on behalf of Esports Insider, said: "It's not a very good start and if I was him, I'd be panicking. It must be awkward. I mean, fortunately for me, I had two great English managers in Terry Venables and Bobby Robson. But to be a German manager, I wonder what the atmosphere is like in the dressing room? It can’t be that good. I saw the manager’s interview after the last game and he looked like a nervous wreck."

Scenic Dharamsala offers Bangladesh, Afghanistan chance to grab early points

Bangladesh have to put their off-field issues behind whereas Afghanistan would want to shed their tag of big tournament underperformers

Shahidi: ‘Want to make this a historic tournament for our people’

Big picture: Bangladesh, Afghanistan look to move on from pitfalls, dramaAfghanistan have been hot on Bangladesh’s heels for the better part of the last decade. This year alone, they are locked at 2-2 after Afghanistan won the bilateral ODI series in Chattogram 2-1, but later Bangladesh beat them by a handsome margin in the Asia Cup. The two sets of players respect each other. There’s bonhomie. But the gloves will be off in the World Cup opener for the two sides in Dharamsala on Saturday.Bangladesh are coming off a 2-0 series defeat against New Zealand at home, having also won just two games in the Asia Cup, where they couldn’t make the final. Off the field, there has been high drama after Shakib Al Hasan blasted Tamim Iqbal on the day Bangladesh left for India for the World Cup.But there is hope. They have a group of youngsters who have an Under-19 World Cup title from three years ago. Towhid Hridoy, Shoriful Islam, Tanzid Hasan and Tanzim Hasan are looking primed for their first senior 50-over World Cup. Hridoy has been the standout performer this year while Shoriful has snuck past Mustafizur Rahman in the left-arm quicks pecking order in the team. There is much running on Tanzid, the left-hand opener, because Bangladesh have opted for just two regular openers in him and Litton Das. Although Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Bangladesh’s all-weather batter this year, could open against Afghanistan, like he did briefly in the Asia Cup. Mehidy has shown great form with both bat and ball this year, and so has the pace attack, led by Taskin Ahmed. They have shown that Bangladesh no longer need to rely on their spinners in the subcontinent no matter what format.Bangladesh would also want to stop relying too heavily on the likes of Shakib and Mushfiqur Rahim, who are playing their fifth World Cup, and Mahmudullah, who is playing his fourth tournament. Their future depends on it.Afghanistan, meanwhile, have their own demons to deal with. Their biggest worry could be the lack of ODIs over the last four years. They are way below the average among the nations participating in the World Cup. As they often do in big tournaments, Afghanistan have brought back experienced players among their squad and traveling reserves.A lot will depend on how their spin trio Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi and Mujeeb Ur Rahman performs. Their batting also needs to step up in the big tournament. The fact that Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran have been in good form this year and Rahmat Shah, captain Hashmatullah Shahidi and Nabi have also shown decent touch bodes well for them.Afghanistan, however, have to shed their tag of big tournament underperformers. They didn’t win any games in the 2019 World Cup, while in the recent Asia Cup, they choked against Sri Lanka in the most miserable way. They would want to avoid these pitfalls on the biggest stage.Form guideAfghanistan LLLLL (last five ODIs, most recent first)
Bangladesh LLWLLIn the spotlight: Afghan openers and floater MehidyEverybody talks about Afghanistan’s spinners, but they want you to know that their opening batters are impressive, too. Zadran and Gurbaz are their top two run-scorers this year, and they are the most likely pair to add a fifty or a hundred partnership in a line-up where batting has not always given them the best numbers. Like fire and ice: Gurbaz provides the big hits and Zadran keeps the innings moving with regular strike rotation. Zadran too is capable of big hits, having emerged as one of their brightest stars since the 2019 World Cup.Afghanistan often depend on their top order for quick runs•AFP via Getty ImagesMehidy Hasan Miraz has batted at four different spots this year. In the two warm-ups, he scored confident fifties against Sri Lanka and England at Nos. 3 and 4, respectively. He struck an unbeaten 112 against Afghanistan as an opener in the Asia Cup so he could be opening again on Saturday. The team management believes he is especially good at nullifying mystery spinners like Mujeeb.Team news: Naveen and Omarzai expected to come inAfghanistan last played the Asia Cup and they have left out Gulbadin Naib and Karim Janat since then, who should be replaced by Azmatullah Omarzai and Naveen-ul-Haq.Afghanistan (probable): 1 Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), 2 Ibrahim Zadran, 3 Rahmat Shah, 4 Hashmatullah Shahidi (capt), 5 Mohammad Nabi, 6 Najibullah Zadran, 7 Azmatullah Omarzai, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Naveen-ul-Haq, 10 Mujeeb Ur Rahman, 11 Fazalhaq FarooqiTen Bangladesh players pick themselves but they have to make a call between left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed and offspinner Mahedi Hasan for the No. 8 spot.Bangladesh (probable): 1 Tanzid Hasan, 2 Litton Das, 3 Najmul Hossain Shanto, 4 Shakib Al Hasan (capt), 5 Towhid Hridoy, 6 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 7 Mehidy Hasan Miraz, 8 Nasum Ahmed/Mahedi Hasan, 9 Taskin Ahmed, 10 Shoriful Islam, 11 Hasan MahmudPitch and conditionsIndia collapsed to 29 for 7 in the last ODI held at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Ground six years ago. It suggests swing and seam movement for an early start. There have, however, been big scores in the two IPL matches held here this year. The hilly town is expected to have crisp weather.Stats and trivia: Bangladesh on the cusp of a three-peat Bangladesh have a chance to win their third successive opening match of a World Cup campaign after beating Afghanistan (2015) and South Africa (2019). Afghanistan have lost both first matches in their previous World Cup appearances. Shakib Al Hasan needs 41 more runs to top the list of allrounders with 1000 runs and 10 wickets in World Cups. He has 34 wickets already, free and clear of the next best on that same list. Afghanistan’s 29 ODIs in the last four years are the least among all participating teams in this year’s World Cup.Quotes”I think four or five players from that [Under-19] World Cup winning side in 2020. They will bring so much positivity to the group. They have done it in the past. They have a lot of energy. I am excited about the whole team, including my staff. We have high hopes and want to enjoy.”

Chelsea player ratings vs. Palmeiras: Cole Palmer's moment of magic and flukey own goal carry Blues into the semis despite Estevao's wondergoal

Enzo Maresca's side were given a scare, but relied on their main man to secure a semifinal berth

Cole Palmer scored a memorable goal and Chelsea got a fortunate late winner to carry the London club into the semi-finals of the Club World Cup with a 2-1 win over Palmeiras. The English side got on the board first but were given a scare by a moment of magic by Esteavo – before capitalizing on their second half possession to secure a spot in the semis.

Palmer opened the scoring with a classy piece of individual play. The English attacking midfielder rolled his man, found half a yard of space, and slotted home after 16 minutes. But Palmeiras enjoyed their moments, too. Estevao – who will join Chelsea after the tournament – caused problems on the right. He was instrumental in setting up their best chance of the first half, with left-back Vanderlan putting a free header into the arms of Robert Sanchez.

Estevao had his say after 53 minutes, though, and showed in a brief flash why Chelsea are so eager to bring him in. The 18-year-old beat his man before lashing near post from an impossible angle and careening away in celebration. The Blues' winner was a fortunate thing. They worked the ball down the left to Malo Gusto, whose mishit cross deflected into the back of the net.

And Chelsea made it relatively easy after that. Palmeiras offered little on the break, while Enzo Maresca's side largely controlled play, cruising into the semifinals – albeit with a stroke of luck. Another Brazilian side, Fluminense, are next – and you'd back the Blues to grind out a result there, too.

GOAL rates Chelsea's players from Lincoln Financial Field…

GettyGoalkeeper & Defence

Robert Sanchez (5/10):

Will be slightly disappointed to be beaten at his near post, and didn't look too certain in his distribution.

Malo Gusto (6/10):

Got forward with regularity and put in a few good deliveries. Pushed back a bit more in the second half. Fortunate to have a role in Chelsea's second.

Trevoh Chalobah (8/10):

Won his headers, covered spaces, grabbed an assist. A really good showing at the back.

Levi Colwill (7/10):

Handled the dangerous Vitor Roque effectively, moved the ball well, could do nothing about the goal. A captain's performance.

Marc Cucurella (6/10):

Seemed intent on kicking everything that moved. Got as much as he gave against Estevao.

AdvertisementGettyMidfield

Andrey Santos (7/10):

Brought into the XI after Reece James picked up an injury in the warmup. Made countless tackles and resisted the Palmeiras press.

Enzo Fernandez (7/10):

Connected play effectively, was always up for the scrap, won his tackles.

Christian Nkunku (5/10):

Got a start at his preferred position, and didn't do loads with it. Could be his last game in a Chelsea shirt.

GettyAttack

Cole Palmer (8/10):

Scored a sublime goal, and found all sorts of clever angles. Quieter in the second half but was still effective throughout.

Liam Delap (5/10):

Threw himself around a lot, got booked, subbed before the hour mark. Not his most convincing outing so far.

Pedro Neto (7/10):

Took on his man with regularity. Did everything but provide the final ball.

GettySubs & Manager

Joao Pedro (6/10):

The new signing, on for his debut. Stretched play and offered some attacking ideas, but never got a clean look.

Noni Madueke (6/10):

Dribbled at his opposite number. Could have won a penalty.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (N/A):

No time to make an impact.

Enzo Maresca (7/10):

Will be annoyed by James' injury in the warmup, but his team were otherwise in control and survived some second half worries. Job done. Semis secured.

WHAT MARESCA & FERREIRA SAID

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca heaped praise on the new signing after the game as he said: "He is very good, a huge talent, fantastic player. The only thing is when you come from South America or another part of the world is that you need to adapt. We are going to help him to adapt, be happy and enjoy football. We have no doubt he will be an important player for Chelsea."

Palmeiras head coach Abel Ferreira, added: "He's my son, he's my son. I have two daughters but he is my son. I spoke with Maresca, he is a nice coach. He bought an amazing player but more than this, you got an amazing person. He is one guy who is 18 years old, so is an amazing player also. You need to take care of him. Embrace him. He will make mistakes at the beginning, for sure, but he is an amazing player with a lot of skills. He can win one game on his own, with the dribbling, the shots. I told him the sun doesn't appear as much in England. The night comes early. But for sure, Chelsea have all conditions to help him because he is a fantastic player."

And the South African juggernaut fell apart against Netherlands. Of all the pre-tournament favourites, only India and New Zealand have played like favourites. The latter have made it four wins in four, and now India are looking to do the same, against Bangladesh in Pune.Bangladesh may have a favourable 3-1 ODI record against India in the last 12 months – most recently winning their Super Four encounter in the Asia Cup last month – but beating India in India is easier said than done. The hosts have played with plenty of main-character energy in their first three fixtures, scoring convincing victories against Australia, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Chandika Hathurusinghe hoping World Cup upsets inspire Bangladesh against 'scary' India

Rohit Sharma's bold new batting template has changed his ODI game – and India's

Bangladesh’s only win against India in the ODI World Cup was 16 years ago – in Trinidad in 2007. Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim were just starting their careers then, and they have played India three times on the biggest stage since, losing quite convincingly on each occasion. This Bangladesh squad has enough experience and young talent in their ranks to stretch India, but their current form isn’t promising. Mushfiqur has scored two fifties in three matches so far but the rest have struggled with consistency. Najmul Hossain Shanto and Litton Das had one good knock each. Rookie Tanzid Hasan hasn’t had much impact. Towhid Hridoy, who scored 500 runs before the World Cup this year, is batting lower than his usual No. 5 position. Mehidy Hasan Miraz also hasn’t been effective.Shakib suffered a quadriceps injury last week but could play – as per their coach, Bangladesh are awaiting results of a scan done on match eve before taking the final decision.* With Bangladesh looking to lengthen their batting by having Mahmudullah at No. 8, Mahedi Hasan and Nasum Ahmed, both of whom played a part in the Asia Cup win against India, are unlikely to make the XI.Whether Bangladesh runs India close or not could come down to how their fast bowlers fare. Mustafizur Rahman aside, the others have been off-colour. Shoriful Islam has been expensive at times and Taskin Ahmed is not the force he was earlier this year.
