Patel's burst wrecks hapless Durham

Warwickshire took 17 Durham wickets on the third day to claim an innings win and strengthen their Championship challenge while leaving Durham in the mire

Press Association15-Jul-2014
ScorecardJeetan Patel’s five-wicket burst brought untold gloom for Durham•Getty ImagesWarwickshire are on the march up the Division One table. After beating title rivals Nottinghamshire in their previous match they routed the team who succeeded them as champions last year, winning by an innings and 188 runs inside three days.Durham are left in a scrap with Lancashire and Sussex to avoid relegation, with Northants’ demise already looking certain.Durham coach Jon Lewis said: “Warwickshire’s bowlers were really disciplined. If you keep batsmen under pressure you get wickets, but we didn’t do that on the first day.”We came into the game hoping a win would take us up towards the top, now we are looking at the other end of the table and our next game at Old Trafford will be a crucial one.”Keith Barker followed up his 6 for 46 in dismissing Durham for 171 by reducing them to 4 for 2 when they followed on 301 behind. But the real capitulation began after Keaton Jennings and Michael Richardson had stayed together for 35 overs to add 71.With the fourth ball of his 12th over Jeetan Patel had Richardson caught at short leg and went on to take 5 for 9 in 22 balls, finishing with 5 for 49.Boyd Rankin took 3 for 16 as Durham subsided from 75 for 2 to 113 all out to slide deeper into relegation trouble. They began the day on 62 for 3 in their first innings and Barker took two wickets in the seventh over. With Chris Wright off the field with a stiff back, Warwickshire had Rikki Clarke operating from the other end and Durham made comfortable progress in the first 20 minutes.Gordon Muchall then fell lbw and two balls later Paul Collingwood pushed forward to a ball slanted across him and edged Barker to Clarke at second slip. Three wickets had gone down for five runs when Phil Mustard drove at Clarke and edged to Will Porterfield at third slip.At 83 for 6, John Hastings joined Scott Borthwick and they enjoyed some respite when Barker was rested with figures of 18-7-33-4.Borthwick went for 46 when played back to a ball from Rankin which kept low and had him lbw. Hastings hit Patel for six on his way to 51 off 66 balls before Barker returned after lunch to have him caught at first slip. When Durham followed on, Mark Stoneman fell second ball on the day he received a penalty under the ECB’s discipline code for showing dissent when given out lbw to Yorkshire’s Adam Lyth at Headingley last week.He followed an away swinger he could have left and edged to third slip, where Will Porterfield clung on again to remove Borthwick in Barker’s next over.Patel, turning the ball out of Barker’s footmarks, had been threatening for some time when he finally Richardson caught by Sam Hain at short leg for 30.Two balls later Muchall was lbw for the fourth successive innings, then Jennings played on for 37 against Rankin and three wickets had fallen for no runs. Collingwood swept Patel for four and was then pinned lbw by Rankin, then Mustard drove at Patel at edged to Clarke at slip.Hastings drove to long on and 75 for two had become 91 for nine before Mark Wood swung lustily to make 18 before he was bowled by Rankin.

India given 'reality check' – Kohli

Sri Lanka inflicted a number of statistical wounds on India during their bonus-point victory at Sabina Park, a result Virat Kohli called a “reality check” for his side

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Jul-2013Sri Lanka inflicted a number of unsightly statistical wounds on India during their bonus-point victory at Sabina Park, a performance Virat Kohli called a “reality check” for a team that had suffered two defeats in the Caribbean after winning the Champions Trophy in England. India’s chances of making the tri-series final are now diminished, because they need to win both remaining matches and hope West Indies beat Sri Lanka to avoid needing a bonus point.*”We have to analyse what we did wrong. We have two more games to go,” said Kohli, who was standing in for MS Dhoni in his first ODI as captain, after the 161-run defeat. “This is going to hurt the guys a little bit.”India’s bowlers did not challenge the Sri Lankan openers after Kohli had won the toss; the upshot was a 213-run opening stand and the first time that a team batted 50 overs in the first innings of an ODI without losing more than one wicket.”It was a tough day at the office. We were not up to the mark with the ball,” Kohli said. “The Sri Lankans batted really well, and we did not. To chase down 349, you need a quick start, we were not able to do that, that did not give us momentum.”India were dismissed for 187 in the 45th over, managing only 13 more than Upul Tharanga’s individual contribution to Sri Lanka’s 348, with Ravindra Jadeja’s unbeaten 49 being the top score.Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews had been dismayed at losing the toss but was thrilled with how the match played out. “We needed that, especially after losing the toss, we were on the back foot. Mahela showed his class. Upul struggled a bit initially but batted through and was brilliant later.”We needed to get that 250, bowlers never let us down if we score 250. Hats off to Mahela and Upul. I am doing my bit the way I can.”The unbeaten 174 was important to Tharanga because not only was it his best ODI score, but it had come after he was recalled to the squad due to an injury to Tillakaratne Dilshan. Tharanga had been sidelined since January.”We needed to get a start because we lost the toss on a sticky wicket,” Tharanga said. “The first ten overs were crucial. They [India] bowled well upfront. So we had to ride that, and then we put the pressure back on them.”*0650 GMT The sentence had said that India needed to win at least one of their remaining games with a bonus point. This has been amended.

Paliwal, Yadav ensure advantage for Services

A round-up of the second day of Ranji Trophy’s Group C matches on December 16, 2012

ESPNcricinfo staff16-Dec-2012
ScorecardRajat Paliwal scored his third century this season to provide Services with a handy first-innings lead against Jammu and Kashmir in Delhi, before their bowlers, led by Suraj Yadav, reduced their opponents to 136 for 6 at stumps, giving them the upper hand. The second day was not as rewarding as the first, on which 16 wickets had fallen, but batsmen didn’t flourish effortlessly either.Resuming at 150 for 6 after having bowled J&K out for 85 on the previous day, Paliwal and Sarabjit Singh stuck together for another 7.3 overs before Sarabjit was out, breaking a 138-run stand. The remaining batsmen couldn’t provide much resistance, and Paliwal struggled to find partners. After scoring 120, his was the final wicket to fall. J&K began positively as their openers put on 40 runs, but wickets started falling thereafter through seamers Suraj Yadav and Nishan Singh, punctuated by small partnerships. Opener Ian Dev Singh featured in four of those, and reached a half-century before being dismissed. At stumps, their team had erased the deficit, but at the cost of six wickets.
ScorecardKerala turned its screws on Tripura by piling a total of 400, led by captain Rohan Prem’s big century, and reducing them to 55 for 4 at stumps on the second day in Agartala. Prem added 65 runs to his overnight score of 105, striking three partnerships, the most prolific one worth 88 with comeback India seamer Sreesanth, who is returning from a rehabilitation following a toe surgery. The duo helped their team reach 400.Their bowlers built on the advantage of the big score by taking early wickets. By the 18th over, four top-order wickets had fallen, all claimed by seamer Unnikrishnan Manukrishnan in his third first-class game. Opener Shubhrajit Roy and Abhijit Dey added 34 runs before close of play.
ScorecardAndhra marginally held the advantage in their battle against Jharkhand, who were taken to a middling score of 257 by their middle-order batsman Saurabh Tiwary, and then milked for 45 overs so Andhra could end the day within 125 runs of the total. Tiwary, unbeaten on 73 overnight, scored a crucial century, and struck a productive stand of 74 with captain Shahbaz Nadeem, who scored a fifty. In reply, Andhra were four down for 54 in the 23rd over, but Amol Muzumdar and AG Pradeep set about rebuilding the innings.
ScorecardIn Porvorim, Goa laid the foundation for a strong first-innings total after bowling Himachal Pradesh out for 338. Their openers had added 58 runs 28.5 overs before the stand was broken, but Asnodkar went on to score a half-century in the company of No. 3 Amogh Sunil Desai, to take his team to 118 for 1 at close of play. This was after their bowlers toiled to end Himachal’s innings. Himachal’s lower order, especially, Rishi Dhawan, Karanveer Singh and No. 10 Rahul Singh stretched their total after they had been reduced to 243 for 8.

The arguments that didn't work for owners of CSK, RR

The arguments presented by Gurunath Meiyappan’s legal team asking for leniency, which were not accepted by the Supreme Court

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Jul-2015The Lodha committee was tasked with fixing the sanctions on Gurunath Meiyappan, Raj Kundra, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals. Here’s the case made to the committee for a lenient punishment by India Cements Limited (ICL) and Jaipur IPL Cricket Limited’s (JIPL) lawyers, and the committee’s responses.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Arguments by lawyers of India Cements and Jaipur IPL for a lenient punishment

No.ArgumentsCounter arguments by the Lodha Panel1The company (CSK only) has a long history of contribution to cricket and cricketersThis argument cannot be accepted because the act of Team Officals has affected the purity of the game and the contribution, if any, by the franchises has also been wasted because millions of people who are true lovers of the game feel cheated2There are no previous antecedents in regards to the companies giving room to any suspicion against its team officialsNo urgent action was taken by the franchises against the Team Officials. The order of suspension passed by the BCCI is not action by the franchise against its Team Official. Each franchise is under an obligation to ensure that each of its Team Officials comply with the regulations, in particular the Anti Corruption Code
3If the companies are suspended, the entire IPL league as well as all the stakeholders, including players and fans, would stand to loseDisrepute has been brought to the game of cricket, the BCCI and the IPL to such an extent that now doubts abound in the public consciousness about whether games are clean or not4Findings, if any, are against the Team Officials in their personal capacity and liability should not be imposed on the franchisesIf those who indulge in corrupt practices are an integral part of the franchises in view of them being an owner/Team Official, the arguments that these acts were personal does not merit acceptance if the actions of these individiuals affect the image of the game, the BCCI and the IPL5The company (CSK only) has suffered immense loss of value already and the market capitalization has fallen and the share prices have fallen tremendously since the 2013 IPL
Suffice to say that such loss is too small in comparison to the loss caused to the reputation of the game, the BCCI and the IPL 6The company (RR only) has been highly celebrated as a nursery for players. The Rajasthan Royals have scouted and nurtured talent in the country and the world. They have provided players a platform to showcase their talents and strengthen the team with the objective of winning matches for Rajasthan Royals
The company claims that it is highly celebrated as a nursery for players. But the fact remains that three RR players were arrested and charged with spot-fixing in the 2013 IPL season. The committee can also take notice of the fact that there has been allegations of approach to one of its players for corrupt practices in 2015 IPL season as well. This shows that all is not well with the company in handling Anti-Corruption Code issues

Gurunath MeiyappanHaving rejected all the arguments presented by India Cements Ltd and Jaipur IPL’s lawyers, the Lodha Panel announced the following sanction on the two companies.””The period of suspension shall commence from the date of this order.

Warner apologises over tweets

David Warner has apologised for the language he used during his Twitter outburst on Saturday but said he felt the need to defend himself after a photo of him was used to illustrate a story on the seedy side of the IPL

Brydon Coverdale23-May-2013David Warner has apologised for the language he used during his Twitter outburst on Saturday but said he felt the need to defend himself after a photo of him was used to illustrate a story on the seedy side of the IPL. Warner has arrived home in Australia after his long stint in India with Delhi Daredevils and he spoke to reporters at the SCG on Thursday, the day after he was fined A$5750 at a Cricket Australia Code of Behaviour hearing.Warner said he had been woken during the early hours of Saturday by WhatsApp, an instant messaging application on his phone, and found that his friends had seen the article and asked him what was going on. Warner then took his anger out in a series of tweets directed at journalist Robert Craddock, who in the article had discussed the recent arrest of three Rajasthan Royals players over alleged spot-fixing.”I was just extremely annoyed with my image being used on that related article,” Warner told reporters on Thursday. “I was trying to defend myself because anyone who looks at the photograph can automatically assume that I’m related to what happened over there.”If I let it go and didn’t say anything, was I going to be defended by others? We just don’t know that. What I did through Twitter, for myself it was disappointing and I shouldn’t have done that and I shouldn’t have used the language that I did.”In his initial tweet, Warner wrote “Shock me @crashcraddock1 talking s*** about ipl jealous p****. Get a real job. All you do is bag people. #getalife”. He used similar language in a series of tweets directed at Craddock and his News Limited colleague Malcolm Conn, who weighed in on Twitter.”I’ve got to be a bit more professional with the choice of words that I use next time,” Warner said. “I’ll keep speaking my mind and always have my opinion and always continue to try and defend myself in the right choice of words … If I had my time again I’d definitely make a phone-call to Robert and ask him why the sub-editors used that image.”Warner sat down with Conn to put the issue behind them on Thursday morning and his focus has now turned firmly towards the Champions Trophy and Ashes in England. Warner is keen to ensure his Test form lifts from the disappointing tour of India in February and March, when he scored 195 runs at 24.37.”I don’t think [this adds] more pressure at all,” he said. “I just want to put a line under this and move forward defending the Champions Trophy and hopefully try to bring back the urn. That’s my goal, to score as many runs as I can for the Australian team and hopefully we can win both those tournaments while we’re away.”

Middlesex ride on Rogers, Morgan tons

This was a day dominated by two batsmen but Middlesex need only cast an eye over Nottinghamshire’s statistics so far to be reminded that the key to success in Championship cricket lies with the bowlers

Jon Culley at Trent Bridge14-Jun-2014
ScorecardEoin Morgan finished the day unbeaten on 174 and within reach of his highest first-class score•PA PhotosThis was a day dominated by two batsmen but Middlesex need only cast an eye over Nottinghamshire’s statistics so far to be reminded that the key to success in Championship cricket lies with the bowlers. Going into this match, Chris Read’s team had five batsman with 500 or more Division One runs so far compared with Middlesex’s two, yet none with 20 wickets or more against Middlesex’s three. It provides much of the explanation for why Middlesex have won four matches and Nottinghamshire only two thus far and why Middlesex, with Steven Finn (30 wickets), Tim Murtagh (24) and Toby Roland-Jones (23) to call upon, look a more optimistic bet for the title. If those bowlers can underscore the work done by Chris Rogers and Eoin Morgan that only emphasised the ordinariness of the home side’s attack in several phases of the day, then Middlesex’s title ambitions will be further reinforced.Morgan’s unbeaten 174 gave him back-to-back hundreds following his 103 against Lancashire a month ago, which ended a drought of five years without one century in the Championship. This was his highest score in Championship cricket and his career-best 209 for Ireland might be under threat if he can negotiate the opening overs of day two against a new ball 16 overs old.Rogers, with whom he shared a third-wicket stand of 272 that is a Middlesex record against Nottinghamshire, sees Morgan this season making clear progress in his four-day game following his decision to forego his annual stint in the IPL.”A couple of years ago when he played some four-day cricket for us I still felt there were areas of his game that needed improving, particularly his defence,” Rogers said. “But his he has come back this year I have been very surprised at how that has improved.”His game is in excellent order at the moment and he just has that ability to take teams down once he gets in as he did today. He can hit 360 degrees around the field and that is a rare skill.”I think England would benefit from having a positive player like him in the Test side but he has to earn it now by putting together consistent performances in the way Sam Robson did.”Rogers himself was in a familiar groove here, dominating the Nottinghamshire attack until, within 20 runs of a double-hundred, he went for the uppercut against Andre Adams and found James Taylor lurking at deep point. Nonetheless, it is fair to say that the Australia opener knows how to score runs against Nottinghamshire bowling. In his last seven first-class innings against the county, he has hit 526, only once scoring fewer than 50.Fours zipped off the bats of both men as the help Nottinghamshire had hoped to draw from the conditions on a cloudy, muggy morning failed to materialise. Rogers hit 26 fours, Morgan has 27 and two sixes, both off Samit Patel’s left-arm spin. Naturally, there were some shots to admire but Nottinghamshire offered too many opportunities for them to tuck into. Adams had bowled Dawid Malan with a lovely delivery that straightened to hit the top of off-stump and Harry Gurney had Neil Dexter caught at first slip soon afterwards but moments in which the bowlers had the upper hand were rare.If Nottinghamshire’s bowling looked below par at times then their fielding was none too clever either. Wessels spilled the biggest chance, offered by Morgan off Gurney on 20. Wessels had bruised his hand taking his first catch and left the field for attention immediately but Mick Newell, the Nottinghamshire head coach, said it did not excuse the drop. There was no forgiving Patel, either, when he missed Rogers on 89 at second slip off Peter Siddle, even though it was a more difficult one, to his left and travelling.Nottinghamshire fought back a little with the second new ball, which Siddle in particular made better use of than the first one, dismissing Joe Denly via a catch at second slip and uprooting John Simpson’s off stump. The Championship pennant has not been hoisted at Lord’s since 1993, the last of seven titles won during Don Bennett’s tenure as coach. The flags at Trent Bridge flew at half-mast to mark Bennett’s passing this week at the age of 80 and the players of both sides honoured his memory with a minute’s silence before play began. It might just have been a moment of inspiration for the visiting side.

Sharjeel, Maqsood impress Whatmore

Pakistan coach Dav Whatmore has affirmed the promise of batsmen Sharjeel Khan and Sohaib Maqsood ahead of the second ODI against Sri Lanka

Andrew Fidel Fernando19-Dec-2013Pakistan coach Dav Whatmore has affirmed the promise of batsmen Sharjeel Khan and Sohaib Maqsood ahead of the second ODI against Sri Lanka. Sharjeel stroked a run-a-ball 61 in Sharjah to set Pakistan’s commanding total in motion, before Maqsood consolidated his team’s advantage alongside Mohammad Hafeez in the middle overs, hitting 73 from 68.They were impressive hands from Sharjeel, on debut, and Maqsood, in his sixth ODI, and although Whatmore was careful not to overstate their potential, he lauded their hunger, as well as their intent at the crease.”It was a very good innings by Maqsood. He’s somebody that’s shown the selectors and myself that he wants to play,” Whatmore said. “When you lose eight to ten kilos in a relatively short space of time, that’s a big effort. Just on that alone I reckon it was worth selecting him. He’s rewarded us with some terrific performances.”Sharjeel debuted yesterday, but in my pre-match talk at the ground, I completely forgot it was his debut because I got the feeling he’s been around so much recently in the T20s. We eventually all congratulated him and he showed the sort of potential that he has. I’m not going to say he’s going to be a great player, but he’s got the potential to be a very good contributor. I’m pleased with that.”Sohaib Maqsood happens to tell me Sharjeel is his childhood friend. During Sharjeel’s innings, Maqsood sat next to me and gave some useful predictions about this kid. They were both very true – on the money. It’s good that each of these guys know each other’s games.”Whatmore also praised Hafeez for his 122, which held the Pakistan’s innings together. Hafeez struggled for batting form in home and away series against South Africa, and had not crossed 35 in his eight previous ODI innings.”Hafeez was really keen yesterday to get back amongst the runs,” Whatmore said. “He’s been a very good contributor in some ways. He had a lean patch against South Africa and was very keen to get back into runs – you might have seen his celebration after the hundred. To me, Hafeez is an automatic selection because he is a multi-dimensional player – the sort we need more of in Pakistan.”Whatmore said the option of batting Hafeez lower down his customary No. 3 had been brought up within the team but he expressed confidence that Hafeez could contribute from anywhere in the side.”There has been some discussion about dropping him down the order, particularly when he wasn’t getting runs against South Africa, which was a disappointment for him, more than anything else. But he knows what I think and I speak to him directly. I think he’s got many, many more years to serve the country and whether he does it successfully at number three or whether he does it successfully lower in the order is something somebody else will have to agree on, because I finish in the next few weeks. He’s certainly a valuable player for Pakistan.”

Ervine stays cool to lead Hants home

Sean Ervine guided holders Hampshire an important step nearer a place in the Yorkshire Bank 40 semi-finals with an unbeaten 65 as Surrey were beaten by three wickets with eight balls to spare at the Ageas Bowl.

Ervine made his runs off 63 balls and struck nine fours as Hampshire eased home, but there had been plenty of scares along the way before they could be sure of their eighth win in 10 group fixtures.Surrey, put into bat, made an inauspicious start, losing their first four batsmen for 39, two of them to Mascarenhas, while all-rounder Ervine reduced Surrey to 79 for five when he removed Gary Wilson in the 19th over.Surrey managed to put together a competitive 219 for 9 only because of two major stands, of 66 for the sixth wicket between Rory Burns and Zafar Ansari and 53 for the seventh between Ansari and Linley. Ansari provided the backbone to Surrey’s total by making 62 in an innings which included a six off Liam Dawson and five fours while Sohail Tanvir, Mascarenhas and Wood each took two wickets for Hampshire.Hampshire have relied heavily on their opening pair of James Vince and Michael Carberry in one-day matches this season but within eight balls both were out, Carberry caught behind to Chris Tremlett’s third ball of the innings and Vince caught and bowled by Jon Lewis to the eighth.Neil McKenzie and Jimmy Adams began a rally with a stand of 55 for the third wicket but at the halfway point, Hampshire were struggled to keep up with the run rate at 68 for four, still needing 152 at more than seven an over.Dawson began the Hampshire acceleration with a brisk 40 only for Adam Wheater to be run out the ball after Dawson had been bowled by Zander de Bruyn, reducing Hampshire to 128 for 6. It was then that durable veterans Ervine and Mascarenhas came together, taking control of the bowling and using the experience accumulated over many years of just such situations to see Hampshire home.

Raphael Varane to join Harry Kane? Bayern Munich considering shock move for out-of-favour Man Utd defender in January window

Bayern Munich consider Raphael VaranePermanent deal an 'interesting' optionDefender out of favour at Man UtdWHAT HAPPENED?

Manchester United defender Varane is reported to be the subject of 'internal discussions' at Bayern Munich as the January transfer window nears. Sky Sports Germany's Florian Plettenberg suggests the Bundesliga champions are put off because of a £14.9 million ($18.6m) salary, but still consider the Frenchman an 'interesting' option and will continue to monitor his situation. A loan is not thought to be on the table and a proposed transfer fee would be up to £26.3m ($32.9m)

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Varane joined Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's United to much fanfare in the summer of 2021, paraded on the Old Trafford pitch before the opening Premier League game of the season against Leeds. But the four-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid has often struggled with injuries since moving to England and in recent months has fallen out of favour with current manager Erik ten Hag. Indeed, Varane has only started one Premier League game – the home defeat to Crystal Palace – since going off injured at half-time against Nottingham Forest back in August. Ten Hag has preferred Harry Maguire and even Jonny Evans at times this season.

DID YOU KNOW?

Kingsley Coman and Dayot Upamecano are the existing French players in the Bayern squad, while Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard left the Allianz Arena in summer. French stars also account for three modern Bayern legends in Franck Ribery, Bixente Lizarazu and Willy Sagnol.

WHAT NEXT FOR VARANE?

The big challenge for Varane in the short-term is to win back his place at Manchester United. There are six weeks until the January transfer window opens, but the Red Devils letting him go at this point would risk leaving them short defensively in the second half of the season.

Chelsea player ratings vs Man Utd: When will the embarrassment end? Kai Havertz and Mykhailo Mudryk flop again for abysmal Blues

Missed chances proved costly for Frank Lampard's side before defensive errors in the second half saw them slip to yet another loss on the road

Chelsea cannot wait for the season to end after they suffered yet another confidence-sapping defeat at the hands of Manchester United. The Blues went down 4-1 at Old Trafford, as Frank Lampard's young charges wilted on the night United booked their return to the Champions League.

Kai Havertz, Mykhailo Mudryk and Conor Gallagher were guilty of missing huge first-half chances, and Chelsea were made to pay for their profligacy as goals from Casemiro and Anthony Martial put United in control at half-time.

Two Wesley Fofana errors compounded matters after the break, as Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford got on the scoresheet, before substitute Joao Felix grabbed a late consolation with a fine individual goal.

GOAL rates Chelsea's players from Old Trafford…

Kepa Arrizabalaga (6/10):

Can't be blamed for any of the goals. Assured in possession and decent save to deny Eriksen early in the second half.

Cesar Azpilicueta (6/10):

Made a couple of key defensive interventions. Age maybe starting to catch up with him.

Wesley Fofana (3/10):

Made a fool of by Fernandes to concede the penalty and gave away possession in his own box for Rashford's goal.

Trevoh Chalobah (6/10):

Recovered from a shaky start. Interesting to see what role he has next season.

Lewis Hall (8/10):

Chelsea's best player by a distance. Mudryk & Havertz cost him two first-half assists and stung De Gea's palms in the second.

Conor Gallagher (5/10):

Energetic in an advanced midfield role, but lacks quality required. Dragged wide when well placed at 1-0.

Enzo Fernandez (6/10):

Needs more quality around him to see him truly shine. Some nice passes, though.

Carney Chukwuemeka (5/10):

Struggled to make much impression on the game on what was just his second league start for the Blues.

Noni Madueke (5/10):

Looked to be incisive with his passing and dribbling, but struggled to create much of note.

Kai Havertz (2/10):

Looked off the pace even before heading wide from close range. The need for a natural No.9 is clear.

Mykhailo Mudryk (3/10):

Showed some good turns of pace but lacks composure in the box. Missed a huge chance at 0-0.

Joao Felix (7/10):

Lovely individual goal for the consolation. Whoever has him at the start of next season has a real player.

Christian Pulisic (6/10):

Clearly keen to make an impression and almost created a chance with a fierce ball across the six-yard box.

Hakim Ziyech (N/A):

On at 4-0 as Lampard rung the changes.

David Datro Fofana (N/A):

Given a late run out.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek (N/A):

Only introduced for the final few minutes.

Frank Lampard (5/10):

Sent out Chelsea's youngest-ever Premier League XI and on another night they might have scored three or four. Clear, however, that is he failing to instil any confidence into his players at this late stage of the campaign.
