Jake Weatherald celebrated his 22nd birthday by flying to his maiden first-class century at Adelaide Oval, where Chadd Sayers had earlier demolished Tasmania to leave South Australia firmly in command at stumps on day one. Sayers picked up 6 for 32 as the Tigers were rolled for 98, before Weatherald and his opening partner Kelvin Smith cruised past that total without the loss of a wicket.Smith was eventually caught off the bowling of Jackson Bird for 62 and Callum Ferguson was dismissed for a duck by debutant Cameron Stevenson, but Weatherald motored on to finish the day on 110 from 116 deliveries, alongside Travis Head on 37. It meant South Australia ended at 2 for 222, already with a 124-run lead.Tasmania had won the toss and chosen to bat, but not one of their batsmen reached 20. Joe Mennie, released from his 12th man duties in the Perth Test so he could bowl in Adelaide, picked up two wickets, and Daniel Worrall also collected two, but Sayers was the man who wreaked havoc.Sayers, who had been part of Australia’s Test squad in New Zealand earlier this year, finished with six wickets from 16 overs. Only once has Sayers claimed better first-class figures, when he took 7 for 46 in March this year – also against Tasmania.

'More established' Duminy returns to where it began

When JP Duminy first travelled to Australia in 2008 he was, by his own admission, “just a kid” but he surpassed expectations by playing a vital role in South Africa’s series win

Firdose Moonda21-Oct-2016When JP Duminy first travelled to Australia in 2008 he was, by his own admission, “just a kid”. There were few expectations on him – he only had an outside chance of playing in the three-Test series – until he exceeded all of them. That’s when he began to understand how severely responsibility could rest on his shoulders. With that, came intense pressure to perform.”The difference [from then] is that I was a young kid, playing my debut Test against guys like Ricky Ponting and Matthew Hayden. It was quite intimidating,” Duminy said on the eve of South Africa’s first tour game under lights in Australia. “Now I am more established than I was then. I am coming into a Test series with a little bit more confidence and a little more stability in my role in the team and how I play Test cricket.”To say Duminy has under-performed in the eight years since his debut is neither cruel nor critical. The numbers back it up.To date, he has played only 36 Tests, added only three more centuries, and has an average of 32.44. He spent a period out of the side with injury – sustained when he returned to Australia in 2012 – but was also dropped twice. The current sentiment in South Africa is that he is a placeholder until someone more capable comes along.JP Duminy made an unbeaten 50 on debut in South Africa’s successful chase of 414 in Perth in 2008•PA Photos

Australia could be the place for Duminy to prove he can fulfill the potential he once showed. In the absence of AB de Villiers, South Africa need senior batsmen to step up. In the context of Duminy’s own career, he needs to step up. He has gone 11 matches without a century since the Galle Test in July 2014, when he got an unbeaten 100 at No. 8.Though his opportunities are sometimes limited by a heavyweight top-order, he also went 11 innings in 2015 without passing 35 and was dumped for the Newlands Test against England last summer.Duminy’s response was to score a double-hundred in a franchise match and force a return, but it was only when he struck an unbeaten 88 against New Zealand in South Africa’s last Test that he was reconsidered. Faf du Plessis, South Africa’s stand-in captain because AB de Villiers is injured, went as far as to say that Duminy’s best was yet to come. Some remain skeptical because Duminy has often threatened without following through, and with an in-form Rilee Rossouw in the squad, an immediate replacement is available if Duminy bombs. That’s why, for Duminy, the lead-up to this series is more important than most and he said he could not have asked for better. “It’s the best preparation we’ve had on any tour, to be honest. I can’t recall this amount of time before a Test match on any tour,” he said. “We’ve got 10 to 14 days of training leading up to the first Test.”JP Duminy has played only 36 Tests in eight years; his last century was in Galle, more than two years ago•AFP

South Africa arrived in Adelaide on Tuesday, 16 days before they take on Australia in Perth. They have two practice matches before the first Test – including a day-night game – and one between the second and third Tests. Their preparation is focused on the pink ball and playing under lights because this trip will be their first encounter with day-night Test cricket. Duminy said they will need some time to adapt “to that difference in colour and in light,” which will take “a few training sessions.”The concerns for South African fans may be that with all the emphasis on Test cricket under lights, the team could forget that the first two matches will be played in normal conditions and if they don’t compete in those, the outcome of the day-night game could be redundant. Duminy allayed such fears, stressing South Africa were using the ample time they had to do as much as they can to win a third successive series in Australia.”We are concentrating on staying in our bubble,” he said. “We are coming into this series with a bit of confidence on the back of our one-day series but we understand that it’s a clean slate. This is Test cricket. We are not looking at what the expectations are. We are looking to concentrate on our preparations. There might be a lot of banter being thrown around in the media but that’s not something we want to focus on.”

Arsenal Could Sign £35m Fabregas Clone

Arsenal have enjoyed some glorious days across their rich history, yet the start of Mikel Arteta's reign threatened to derail those years of success under Arsene Wenger.

Unai Emery had struggled to offer an instant impact following the legendary Frenchman's retirement, and so the hierarchy traded one Spaniard for another and instead put their trust in youth.

Despite a tumultuous opening two years, his most recent term has provided all the rewards their loyalty has merited. However, they are far from reaching their ultimate goal of toppling Manchester City and reclaiming that Premier League title.

It is common knowledge that to do this Edu will need to invest heavily once again this summer, adding more depth to a starting XI that could likely compete with anyone across Europe when fully fit.

In an effort to conjure the success of past regimes, perhaps the Brazilian sporting director could seek to replicate the key stars from those older periods of glory.

Fortunately for him and Arteta, the availability of Orkun Kokcu at just €40m (£35m), and their reported interest from last month, could see them emulate Cesc Fabregas' early days in north London.

Does Orkun Kokcu play like Cesc Fabregas?

Before he reverted to a metronome-like figure in the engine room of Barcelona and Chelsea, the Spaniard was an all-action box-to-box star, who would claim goals and assists from deep.

In Fabregas' first full year in the first team, the now 36-year-old would record 11 goal contributions, before taking that figure up to 17 the year following.

The apex, however, arguably came during the 2009/10 season, as he scored 15 and assisted a further 15 in the league alone, with 38 goal contributions to his name across all competitions from midfield.

It was no surprise that at the time Wenger claimed: "I have seen a lot of young players start in the game and he is one of the best I have ever seen. He gave a few final balls, set up the first goal and there were a series of key moments in which he was involved. It is very pleasing."

cesc-fabregas-arsenal

In Kokcu, they would gain another young goalscoring star from deep, given how his offensive exploits have fired Feyenoord to an unlikely title win in Holland.

The 22-year-old boasts 12 goals and five assists this term and has been dubbed "the best in his league" by former Juventus star Mohamed Sissoko, to emphasise his pedigree akin to Wenger's earlier praise.

His numbers are dressed up in a similar all-action play style that saw Fabregas shoot to fame, as when compared to other midfielders across Europe he ranks in the top 3% for progressive carries per 90 and the top 1% for shot-creating actions per 90, via FBref.

It is perhaps no surprise then to see such similarities drawn by analysts in the game, with Nick Gada stating during the infancy of the Turk's career: "Can see why Arteta is after Orkun Kokcu. His passing ability for a 19yo is unreal. A lot of similarities to a Fabregas / Cazorla."

In this dynamic Turkish superstar, therefore, Edu could hand Arteta some added firepower to replace the outgoing Granit Xhaka and allow the 41-year-old head coach to mould him even further in the image of his legendary compatriot.

Sky Sports Reveal Catch On Sheikh Jassim’s Final Man Utd Bid

Manchester United are the subject of a fifth bid from Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani. United fans have long since been opposed to the Glazer family running the club, but the owners have yet to accept any of the bids they've received for the OId Trafford outfit.

What's the latest Manchester United takeover updates?

According to Sky Sports, Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani has improved his offer to to buy Manchester United but has issued an ultimatum. Reported as "a little bit of a caveat" live by Sky Sports News, his bid team will now not "engage with the process after Friday".

It's his second ultimatum during this process after previously declaring that his third and "final offer" in April would not be followed up with another. However, the Raine Group, a New York investment bank, received a fourth offer in the region of £5bn in May.

Sheikh Jassim's offer is for 100% ownership of Manchester United. United have been informed this will be the final bid, but with the Glazers seeking a £6bn offer, it may not matter even if Jassim is said to believe "is a very competitive one".

If accepted, it would clear £1bn of United's debt as well as bring a separate fund to redevelop Old Trafford and the Carrington training facility while also investing in the squad.

How does the takeover saga affect Man United transfers?

Despite the ongoing negotiations between Sheikh Jassim and Manchester United, Erik ten Hag will still be able to invest into his side this summer, but there may still be limitations.

An update from May stated that Jassim is keen on signing Neymar if he is successful in buying the club but with no clear timeline on the sale, signing the Brazil icon remains an improbable purchase. Of course, that's before you consider his injury record.

Harry Kane is another doubtful target for the Red Devils if this uncertainty continues. Fabrizio Romano stated that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will "make life very difficult for Manchester United to sign Kane", so it's hard to believe they can complete a deal without the backing of a new owner.

One interesting target for ten Hag to improve his midfield options is Brighton's Moises Caicedo. The Ecuadorian is said to be valued at £70m. Journalist Sam Dean says Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United have all shown interest while Liverpool could still enter the race as well.

United finished third in the Premier League and will be hoping their summer recruitment can continue their progression under ten Hag.

Defiant state associations face funding cuts

The Supreme Court has told the BCCI to stop issuing funds to state associations that will not comply with the Lodha Committee’s recommendations

Nagraj Gollapudi07-Oct-20162:49

Supreme Court also wants BCCI president to clarify approach to ICC

The Supreme Court has told the BCCI to stop issuing funds to state associations that will not comply with the Lodha Committee’s recommendations. It told the board that no further money should be given unless the state association passes a resolution to implement the recommendations and submits an affidavit before the court. In an interim order issued on Friday, the court also said that funds disbursed by the BCCI to certain state associations after the board’s annual general meeting in November 2015, should go into a fixed-term deposit until further directions. On Thursday, the court was told by amicus curiae Gopal Subramanium that the BCCI had disbursed “substantial sums” to state associations before putting in place a disbursement policy, which was one of the recommendations the board had to adopt by the September 30 deadline. Subramanium said the action was in defiance of the Lodha Committee’s directives.Kapil Sibal, the lawyer representing the BCCI, had said in his client’s defence that the disbursement was an “ordinary and routine matter” and not “forbidden” by the Lodha Committee. The interim order said Sibal had revealed to the court that the BCCI had got INR 2500 crore as compensation from the broadcaster on account of termination of the Champions League T20, which was discontinued last year.Sibal had told the court that about INR 1500 crore went towards taxes and other liabilities, leaving BCCI with a net amount of Rs.1036.78 crore. “He submitted that in terms of a decision taken in the AGM held on 09.11.2015, 70% of balance amount of Rs.718.24 crores was to be disbursed to 25 Associations in the country @ Rs.28.73 crores per Association,” the order said. “A sum of Rs.12 crores out of the said amount was released to each one of the Associations pursuant to the said resolution leaving the balance amount of Rs.16.73 crores unpaid.”Subramanium contended that the disbursement of such large amounts was not a routine matter and was done on an “ad-hoc basis” with the intention to “appease and possible induce” the board members to “oppose” the Lodha Committee recommendations. In its order, the court said it did not want to take a “final view” on whether any action should be taken against the BCCI and its office bearers. However, the court found fault with the BCCI’s position that it could not adopt the Memorandum of Association and Rules, a step that would signal it had adopted the Lodha Committee’s recommendations, because of the “reluctance” of state associations to do so.”If that be the position, there is no reason why the State Associations that are opposed to the reforms suggested by Justice Lodha Committee and accepted by this Court should either expect or draw any benefit from the release of grants by the BCCI,” the order said.Arvind Datar, another lawyer representing the BCCI, argued that only 13 state associations had received the balance amount of INR 16.73 crores each. The court said: “No further amount in terms of the Resolution passed in AGM on 09.11.2015 or any subsequent resolution by the BCCI or its Working Committee shall be disbursed to any State Association except where the State Association concerned passes a proper resolution to the effect that it is agreeable to undertake and to support the reforms as proposed and accepted by this Court in letter and spirit.”Such an “unequivocal” undertaking needed to be signed by the president of the state association and presented both to the Lodha Committee and the court.”It is only after such affidavits are filed, that BCCI may transfer the balance amount of Rs.16.73 crores payable to the State Associations. As regards the 13 State Associations to whom the payment has already been disbursed, we direct that the State Associations concerned shall not appropriate the said amount except after they have passed a resolution and filed an affidavit as mentioned above before Justice Lodha Committee and before this Court. In case the affidavits are not filed, the amount disbursed to the State Associations shall be invested by the Associations in a term deposit subject to further directions of this Court.”On October 1, the BCCI had held a Special General Meeting to consider the Lodha Committee’s recommendations and said it would only accept a selection of them. The board said it could not accept recommendations such as the age cap of 70 for office bearers, the nine-year limit for term of office broken into three, three-year terms with a cooling-off period between each term, and the one-state-one-vote policy. These recommendations, the BCCI said, had not been accepted by the board’s members – the state associations. It later emerged that the BCCI had also held an emergent working committee meeting on September 30. After hearing about decisions supposedly taken at that meeting, the Lodha Committee directed two banks to stop two specific transfers to the state associations because the BCCI had not put in place the new fund disbursement policy. The BCCI responded by claiming the ongoing India-New Zealand series was under threat because the Lodha Committee had frozen its accounts. The committee said it had done no such thing and issued a clarification to banks to not freeze the board’s accounts in total. However, several of the transfers the Lodha Committee had objected to had already been made, which prompted the committee to issue a directive to the states telling them not to touch these funds or risk being in contempt of court. These events culminated in the hearing on October 6, when a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India TS Thakur gave the BCCI a day to agree to fall in line with the Lodha Committee’s recommendations. On Friday, however, the hearing was deferred to October 17 but the interim order was damaging to the financial future of the state associations, unless they adopted the Lodha Committee recommendations.

Agarwal 161 and Pujara fifty highlight run-fest

Opener Mayank Agarwal smashed 161 off 218 balls, Gautam Gambhir collected 90 and Cheteshwar Pujara was unbeaten 63 as India Blue dominated India Green in their Duleep Trophy match

Opener Mayank Agarwal smashed 161 off 218 balls to headline a dominating performance from India Blue in the third Duleep Trophy match in Greater Noida. His captain Gautam Gambhir was run out 10 short of his century, which brought Cheteshwar Pujara to the crease to face the pink ball. Pujara finished the day unbeaten on 63, having spent more than 30 overs at the crease. With those three bossing the game, India Blue racked up 336 runs at 3.73 per over, giving no respite to the Suresh Raina-led India Green. The BCCI had reintroduced the Duleep Trophy this season and chose to play the matches under lights to see if they could host day-night Tests in the near future. To that end, Pujara’s innings now and M Vijay’s later – he is part of the opposition – would be crucial. They are the only representatives from the first-choice Indian Test side who have been involved in the tournament so far.The other players would also want to catch the selectors’ eyes and Agarwal would feel he has done reasonably well, following up his 92 last week with his second first-class hundred on Sunday. Often seen as a short-format specialist – his four-day debut came three years after he had begun his T20 career – Agarwal struck 21 fours and one six and was a big contributor to India Blue’s 212-run opening partnership. Considering he was only 21 matches old in long-form cricket, and only recently became a reliable opener for Karnataka, his big break might take a while coming.Gambhir, also looking for a go at international cricket, struck his second successive half-century. He took a particular liking to the spinners, securing 62 of his 90 runs and eight of his 10 fours off Jajaj Saxena, Pragyan Ojha and Shreyas Gopal.Pujara’s spread was a bit more even. He struck his sixth ball for four – a pull shot off Ashok Dinda – and continued finding the boundary regularly. Back-to-back hits to the fence with nine overs left to stumps brought him his fifty. Siddhesh Lad, caught for 1, was the only batsman to miss out.
