NOITE INFELIZ DO MAESTRO

Alviro Petersen replaces injured Smith for South Africa

Alviro Petersen has replaced his Test opening partner, Graeme Smith in South Africa’s Champions Trophy squad. Smith has been ruled out following the recurrence of an ankle injury that requires surgery. Petersen will partner Hashim Amla at the top of the order to bring stability to a South African line-up that will be without Smith and Jacques Kallis, after the latter opted out due to personal reasons. He was picked on the value of his experience, strong county form and a modest record in the format, despite not having played an ODI since January 2012.In the last month, Petersen has scored 537 runs for Somerset across the county championship and the Yorkshire Bank 40 series to enjoy what convener of selectors, Andrew Hudson called the “form of his life.” More importantly for Hudson, it proves Petersen has adjusted well to English conditions, which South Africa see as a challenge they must overcome if they hope to lift ICC silverware for the first time in 15 years.”With the tournament being played early in the England summer, we envisage that bowling conditions will favour the seamers and getting good partnerships going up front is going to be paramount to success,” Hudson said.Patience is one of the hallmarks of Petersen’s game, as he showed during his 182 at Headingley during South Africa’s tour of England last year. “He is a proper, proven opening batter,” Geoff Toyana, Peterson’s coach at the Lions franchise in South Africa, said. “He is technically sound and he knows how to build an innings.”Although Petersen played only one 50-over game for the Lions last season, due to international commitments, Toyana chose to use him in the final when he was available. He scored 56, batting at No.4 in the washed-out encounter. He also played an important part in the Lions Twenty20 campaign, which they won. In those matches, Petersen also batted in the middle-order as part of the Lions’ plan to “see his other game”. Toyana explained they wanted Petersen to show he could accelerate when needed.”We wanted to show what he could do when the field was out, and he could clear boundaries and hit into gaps. He adapted to that very well, he showed he can hit the ball in the latter stages of the innings,” Toyana said. “I think he can get that balance right for South Africa, as well. He is a smart guy and he will work it out. He knows it’s a great opportunity for him especially because he has not played much one-day cricket.”While scoring runs will be Petersen’s primary job, he will also have to fill in for Smith in the leadership role. South Africa’s one-day squad is notably lacking in players of stature on whom AB de Villiers has leaned on heavily in the past to assist in decision-making. As captain of the Lions, and a regular member of the Test team, Petersen has earned the respect of his compatriots and will be in a position to assist de Villiers if needed. That “added value” Petersen can offer is, according to Toyana and Hudson, what tipped the scale in his favour and saw him picked over the liked of Henry Davids or Quinton de Kock. The former will be forgiven for feeling aggrieved. Davids is 33 years old, has done his time on the domestic scene and has played a handful of Twenty20 matches for South Africa with some success. But, he has no playing experience in the UK.De Kock will have less reason to consider himself snubbed. He has had a tough time at the IPL, where he has played just three matches for Sunrises Hyderabad and managed six runs. Toyana, who also coaches de Kock at franchise level, had comforting words for the 20-year-old. “His time will come,” he said.

Late wickets lift England in victory pursuit

Four days of enthralling, gut-wrenching and at times quite remarkable Ashes cricket came to rest at Trent Bridge with England favourites to take a 1-0 lead in the Investec Test series

The Report by David Hopps13-Jul-2013

Four days of enthralling, gut-wrenching and at times quite remarkable Ashes cricket came to rest at Trent Bridge with England favourites to take a 1-0 lead in the Investec Test series. Favourites, but not so confident that they would sleep soundly. Nobody sleeps soundly at the start of an Ashes series.Australia will begin the final day still 137 runs short of victory with four wickets left, aware that the first Test tilted towards England in the final hour when they accounted for Michael Clarke, Steve Smith and Phillip Hughes within 17 balls. “Cut off the serpent’s head,” Graeme Swann had urged before the series began and the loss of Clarke, caught at the wicket off Stuart Broad, caused the Australian body to begin thrashing.Clarke’s dismissal possessed the high drama that already this series is producing at will. The umpire, Aleem Dar, strolled to square leg to discuss whether the ball had carried to Matt Prior, and it was such a critical juncture that he would have probably asked for a TV verdict if he had caught it above his head. Then Clarke upped the tension by reviewing, only for the third umpire, Marais Erasmus, to confirm the decision dint of the lightest mark on Hot Spot and by audio.Steven Smith followed to the next ball – the first wicket for Swann, in his 22nd over. Swann has never made a match-winning contribution at Trent Bridge, his home ground, and even though this worn pitch seemed made for him, it was so pedestrian that it allowed time to adjust, and left the shrewdest, most adaptable batsmen scenting that runs were possible. But, uplifted by Clarke’s dismissal, Swann suddenly summoned more turn. Smith fell lbw on the back foot and Hughes followed for 0, the ball just pitching on leg stump and spinning back sharply for another lbw verdict. No side had ever scored as many as 311 in the last innings to win a Test at Trent Bridge, but the heavy roller further deadened the pitch for a prolonged period and Australia also drew sustenance from the hottest day of the year and a lack of extravagant swing for the new ball.Their first task was to gnaw away at England’s expectations and they did so impressively in a first-wicket stand of 84 between Shane Watson and Chris Rogers. They lost Watson by tea but even that was unfortunate, as he fell to a marginal lbw decision for Broad.Whereas Watson departed for 46 with sorrowful shakes of the head after his review narrowly failed to overturn Dar’s lbw decision, Rogers did win a reprieve on 38 in the following over. He is a survivor: the gnarled gunslinger who pops out briefly from behind a rock and then disappears from view again.”Caught behind?” he mouthed at Kumar Dharmasena after the umpire had upheld Swann’s appeal. Lbw or caught behind, it did not matter; replays found him innocent on all counts.Australia’s new opening combination has already developed a presence. They complement each other naturally and not just because they are right and left-handed. Watson is a domineering figure, always eager to take up the cudgels; Rogers is more furtive, using his wealth of experience to maximum effect.Upon Watson’s exit, Ed Cowan came in on a pair. His first Ashes Test had brought him little pleasure: a first-ball duck and bouts of nausea. For 15 balls, he wondered where his first run would come from but then Steven Finn released the pressure with a short wide one that he gratefully despatched. On the brink of tea, England’s conviction that they could win the first Test soared – and it came from an unlikely source. Joe Root’s first Test wicket could hardly have come at a more opportune time. Cowan, enticed into a drive against an offspinner that turned out of the rough, edged to first slip. Rogers chipped a slower ball from Anderson to mid-wicket, a dismissal plotted at tea which brought a celebration between the bowler and David Saker, the England bowling coach, applauding on the balcony.England’s morning had been one of jubilation. As they added a further 51 for their last four wickets, two batsmen walked off to standing ovations as recognition of efforts largely made the previous day. But for Ian Bell and Stuart Broad, the messages were very different. The applause for Bell was appreciative, regard for perhaps the finest innings he has ever played for England, the deftest of Ashes hundreds made when England needed it most. The ovation for Stuart Broad carried more meaning: a significant show of public support on a day when he was castigated in the media for allegedly betraying the spirit of cricket for not walking when Dar erroneously gave him not out for a blatant edge to first slip, off the wicketkeeper’s gloves, on the third evening. If Broad was going to receive public support anywhere, it was from his home crowd in Nottingham but when he edged James Pattinson to Brad Haddin on 65 and approached the old pavilion, he will have been moved by the response. At stumps, Clarke offered unabashed support to Broad on Sky TV. “I’ve always been a believer that umpires are there to take decisions,” he said. “If everybody walked, we wouldn’t need umpires. It is an individual decision but I don’t think any less of Stuart for what he did.”They were wise words: less than an hour earlier, Clarke had also legitimately stood his ground when he probably knew he had hit it. His edge was considerably less obvious than Broad’s but personal morality cannot be decided by how obvious something is. For Australia, though, frustration was understandable. The odds favoured England from the moment that Bell and Broad amassed their seventh-wicket stand of 138 in 48 overs. If the Broad furore made him the victim of overstatement, Bell’s 109, his 18th Test hundred, possessed understated excellence. He was 95 not out overnight and could not have hoped for any more munificence than the immediate present offered up by Mitchell Starc, a low full toss which Bell carved through gully to reach 99. He scampered a hundred off a misfield in Starc’s next over. Starc finally silenced him, caught at the wicket, but not before he had reprised the deft cover drives and back cuts which had been the hallmark of his innings.Broad, 47 not out at start of play, passed 50 to rousing cheers when he edged between Watson and Clarke at first and second slip. Australia must have reflected that it was not the time for the two, who have not always seen eye to eye, to behave to each other with infinite politeness. When Broad fell for 65, edging a back-foot force at Pattinson, Australia rounded up the rest within nine overs. England’s innings ended when Swann again invited Watson and Clarke to take a slip catch, both dived and this time Clarke came up with the ball.

Defending champions face stiff test

Defending champions Australia enter the tournament with much to protect, but with a glaring weakness against the new ball, it will be a difficult road ahead

The Preview by Brydon Coverdale06-Jun-2013OverviewUnlike the glory days of the late 1990s and early 2000s, there isn’t much global silverware currently held by the Australians. But the Champions Trophy is still in their possession, and has been since 2006. Whether it remains theirs depends on how Michael Clarke and his men handle the next few weeks. And they will need to come to grips with the conditions better than they did during their ODI series in England last year, when they were trounced 4-0. It was their heaviest ever defeat in a bilateral one-day series. Notably, though, their best batsman on that trip was George Bailey, who has been promoted to vice-captain for this Champions Trophy. The challenge for Australia is to keep their eyes on the immediate prize, rather than letting their minds wander to the upcoming Ashes series, in which seven members of the Champions Trophy squad will be taking part. Clarke has spoken of the importance of the one-day tournament in giving Australia confidence ahead of the Ashes, although the four-day warm-up games against Somerset and Worcestershire will be of greater relevance. Still, they will be especially happy if one or two players who have struggled in Test cricket of late – Shane Watson and Phillip Hughes, for example – take the chance to pile up some runs ahead of the Tests, regardless of format. The Australians have selected a very different squad from that which bowed out in the quarter-finals of the most recent major ODI tournament, the 2011 World Cup. Gone are Ricky Ponting, Brad Haddin, Michael and David Hussey, Brett Lee, Shaun Tait and others. In their place are an exciting group of multi-skilled young men who should form part of the national limited-overs team for many years to come, such as James Faulkner, Mitchell Marsh, Nathan Coulter-Nile and Glenn Maxwell. Whether they can display the consistency to win a major tournament is the big question.Australia will hope James Faulkner takes an immediate liking to English surroundings•BCCI

Key playerAt the last Champions Trophy, Shane Watson started slowly – he made ducks in his first two games, but finished with the biggest bang imaginable, with unbeaten centuries in the semi-final against England and the final against New Zealand. Australia’s Test side has suffered due to Watson’s lack of runs in the past two years, but he has remained reasonably productive in the limited-overs format. His IPL form – 543 runs at 38.78 – was encouraging as well. Ahead of the Ashes it will also be important for Watson to continue increasing his bowling workload after resuming in the IPL.Surprise packageIt is starting to look as if 2013 might be James Faulkner’s breakout year. Faulkner, 23, made his ODI debut against West Indies in February and proved himself a capable and feisty bowling allrounder. That should have been no surprise, for Faulkner has won the Ricky Ponting Medal as Tasmania’s best player in each of the past three seasons, which has been a period of exceptional strength for the state side. A left-arm medium-fast bowler with a good change of pace, Faulkner continued his strong year by sitting second on the IPL wicket tally with 28 at 15.25 for Rajasthan Royals. After being named in the Ashes squad earlier this year, Faulkner said he had never been to England. The Australians are hoping he takes an immediate liking to the surroundings.WeaknessAs in Test cricket, the moving ball remains a problem for Australia’s batsmen, which was clear during the one-dayers in England last year. Never was it more obvious, though, than during their disastrous 74-all-out batting first against Sri Lanka at the Gabba in January, when Nuwan Kulasekara and Lasith Malinga ran through them in 26.4 overs. Five days earlier they had been skittled for 170. Watson, David Warner, Phillip Hughes, Clarke and Bailey are potentially a very strong top five, but they will face swinging conditions in this tournament. How they handle them will not only determine their success in the Champions Trophy, but will provide a pointer to the Ashes.Champions Trophy historyIn 2009, Ponting led Australia to the title in South Africa, successfully defending the prize they had won by beating West Indies in India in 2006. In fact, not since the days when the tournament was called the ICC Knock Out – back in 2000 – have Australia failed to reach the semi-finals. They enter the tournament on an eight-match Champions Trophy winning streak, having last been defeated by West Indies in their opening game of the 2006 edition.Recent formAustralia sit third on the ICC one-day international rankings and the 2012 battle against England was the only series they have lost since the 2011 World Cup. However, they were pushed at home by Sri Lanka earlier this year and had to settle for a 2-2 series, before they swept a listless West Indies 5-0.

Jean, Kieza… Me acalmando até.
