Jamshed strives to become a 'complete' batsman

Nasir Jamshed has said he wants to boost his reputation on the tour of South Africa, the first time he’ll be playing outside Asia

Nasir Jamshed has said he wants to boost his reputation on the tour of South Africa, the first time he’ll be playing outside Asia.Jamshed made his international debut in early 2008, in the home ODI series against Zimbabwe. He had a relatively tidy stint between 2008 and 2009, playing mostly against Asian teams in Asia, before missing out due to fitness issues. After two-and-a-half years he returned to international cricket last year, scored 602 runs at 66.88 with three hundreds and three fifties. He played 22 ODIs and 11 T20Is, all in Asia; his grade-cricket career too was confined to the subcontinent. His limited-overs credentials, though, ultimately won him a Test call-up for the tour of South Africa.Jamshed, who struck back-to-back centuries in the ODI series against India, is currently Pakistan’s best batsman in terms of form and consistency. He is keen on becoming a complete batsman who can adjust to any conditions around the world. “I don’t want to be tagged as an Asian-oriented batsman,” Jamshed told ESPNcricinfo. “It’s the line between an average and a world-class player,” he added, claiming success around the world was key.”I admit I haven’t played outside Asia and the tour to South Africa without doubt will be my first real test and I am prepared for it.”Jamshed, 23, who, so far, has played against Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, India and Australia, said he is yet to face a “tough” bowler in international cricket. In South Africa, though, he is expecting tougher competition. “I haven’ played out of Asia; similarly I am yet to face tough bowlers, so it would be a unique experience for me to bat against South Africa’s world-class bowlers in their own backyard.”Pakistan have toured South Africa on four occasions since 1995. The pitches in South Africa have always tested Pakistan’s batsmen. Among the openers, Taufeeq Umar and Saeed Anwar managed to score centuries, with the current vice-captain Mohammad Hafeez averging 16.5 in six innings played in 2007. “I never been to South Africa at any stage of my career but the pitches there are always challenging,” Jamshed said. “I don’t know what happened in past but every day is a new day and things do improve with time. It obviously will be tough but we are well prepared for it and I have my plans as an opener.”I know they have done some homework on me and I am not worried at all but I have to think ahead of them and give them nothing. There is no need to rush. If they want to bowl hard, I have all the strokes and patience required for Test cricket. I have also worked so hard on my defence, making it more solid.”Pakistan’s Test squad left for South Africa on Sunday morning from Lahore.

Ponting leads Hurricanes to comfortable win

A half-century from Ricky Ponting and a hat-trick from Xavier Doherty helped the Hobart Hurricanes to a comfortable 30-run win over the Sydney Thunder

A half-century from Ricky Ponting and a hat-trick from spinner Xavier Doherty helped the Hobart Hurricanes to a comfortable 30-run win over the Sydney Thunder. It was so comfortably, in fact, that Ponting was afforded an over of offspin late in the run chase, and he even claimed the wicket of Scott Coyte, but it was his return to form with the bat that was both eye-catching and significant to his team’s cause.Ponting showed glimpses in his previous innings against the Renegades and again took his time settling after Hobart was sent in on a good Bellerive surface. Ponting and Tim Paine rolled along at only a run-a-ball through the first seven overs. There were crisp strokes mixed with a lot of dot balls, as Ponting lofted Coyte majestically over the cover fence in the fifth over and Paine smeared Azhar Mahmood into the midwicket stands in the next over. Between times they found the fielders more often than the gaps. But debutant Simon Keen’s introduction triggered Ponting to shift gears. He nearly cleared the cover rope for a second time before backing away a cracking a bullet-like square-drive backward of point for consecutive boundaries. Ponting then took to Mahmood with a well-struck straight drive for four, a neatly placed flick to the fine-leg rope, and a brutal front foot pull that was hit frightfully hard over the midwicket fence to bring up his fifty.Chris Gayle eventually knocked him over but applauded him for a wonderful hand. That sparked a mini-collapse for the Hurricanes. Paine, Travis Birt, and Aiden Blizzard all fell in quick succession to 20-year-old legspinner Adam Zampa who bowled impressively. But the experience of Owais Shah and George Bailey came to the fore, showing the depth of the Hurricanes line-up. They clubbed 54 from the last 26 balls of the innings to raise the total to 4 for 177.The Thunder’s chase started brightly on the back of the powerful pairing of Gayle and Mark Cosgrove. But when they fell in consecutive overs before the total reached 36, the Thunder’s lack of depth was severely exposed. The required rate rose significantly with each passing over as Chris Rogers and Mahmood struggled to find the boundary. Both men fell for ineffective scores of 24 and 23 respectively, before Doherty delivered the knockout blows in the 17th over. His hat-trick was born more of desperate batting than classic spin bowling. But he did beat both Keen and Ryan Carters in flight before trapping Cameron Borgas lbw sweeping, although the ball looked to be spinning well wide of off stump.Bailey had a sense theatre and gave Ponting an over to please a fervent home crowd. Coyte holed out to deep midwicket to wild cheers. They thought their home-grown hero had two when Paine, and the square-leg umpire, believed Zampa was stumped, but he was recalled when replays showed part of his backfoot was grounded behind the line. The Thunder remain winless after four matches, while the Hurricanes rise to fourth in the standings and keep themselves in the hunt for a semi-final berth.

Win 'sets up big final' – Sammy

West Indies captain Darren Sammy said that batting till the final over of the innings, despite the clutch of early wickets, made the difference for his team in the fourth ODI in Mirpur

West Indies captain Darren Sammy said that batting till the final over of the innings, despite the clutch of early wickets, made the difference for his team in the fourth ODI in Mirpur. They fought their way to 211 for 9 after losing half their side by the 24th over, and that total eventually proved to be too big for a Bangladesh line-up that looked all at sea against quality pace bowling.”Looking at the way the game was unfolding, I always told myself that if we bat till the end we stand the chance of scoring 190-plus,” Sammy said. “It is about applying yourself in the middle. My partnership with [Darren] Bravo was crucial. We just said ‘let us try to bat deep’.”We wanted to have a go in the last four overs. We kept losing wickets, so we had to push [launching the final surge] back. But it proved today that 212 runs was a lot [to chase] on that wicket.”Sammy’s all-round performance was, ultimately, the difference between the two sides. He held firm with the bat after West Indies had fallen to 102 for 6 in the 32nd over from the relative comfort of 71 for 1 just an hour before. He took stock of the situation and batted calmly with Darren Bravo, the pair adding 43 runs for the seventh wicket. Bravo was caught and bowled by offspinner Sohag Gazi, one of several poorly-timed dismissals for West Indies, in the 43rd over.Sammy then had the likes of Veerasammy Permaul and Sunil Narine for company but, even now, rather risking hitting out and allowing his team to be bowled out, he kept his head. He only launched in the last three overs of the innings, taking 35 valuable runs. He did have a life, being dropped at deep-square leg on 30 when West Indies were 168 for 8, and he made it count for his team.”Last game it was Marlon [Samuels], today it is me. It is about players putting their hands up and doing what matters for the team,” Sammy said. “As a leader, you always try to lead from the front. It gives you a good feeling inside. It won’t happen all the time because it is a team sport but when you do it, it feels good.”Sammy also made a major contribution with the ball, removing Anamul Haque and Naeem Islam off successive balls in his first over before accounting for Mominul Haque in his third over. He took advantage of the Bangladesh batsmen’s impatience. With Kemar Roach, his opening partner, he had reduced Bangladesh to 13 for 5 by the sixth over, and the series-levelling win was all but confirmed.West Indies thrived by attacking with pace and short pitched bowling up front and, today, the spinners did the other half of the job. The bowling unit’s showing pleased Sammy: “Our pacers have been taking the wickets throughout the Test series. In this game the ball was carrying nicely, maybe because of the dew. We all know Kemar bowls 90-plus miles per hour. Even [Dwayne] Smith did a good job. Sunny [Narine] and [Veerasammy] Permaul got some spin. All the bowlers put their hands up.”Saturday’s game now, for all intents and purposes, is a final, and West Indies are in the ascendancy. The pressure was on them when they returned to Dhaka from Khulna 2-0 down, and they have turned their form around as they would have liked. “It was a must-win game for us, I’m just happy that the team did what they had to do to win,” Sammy said. “We have had good days in the Test series, the last [one-day] match … We did what we had to do today, which is level the series. It sets up a big final tomorrow.”

Alviro Petersen will not field in the Headingley Test, but will bat again if required, after sustaining a grade one strain to his right hamstring. He will require seven to ten days to recover but should be fit fot selection for the thrid Test at Lord’s, which starts on August 16.The results of Petersen’s scans were received by the South African team management on Saturday morning and they confirmed assistant coach Russell Domingo’s statements late yesterday afternoon that the injury was “not too serious.” Jacques Rudolph will be likely to open with Smith in the second innings.Petersen scored 182 runs and spent eight hours and 53 minutes at the crease over the first two days of the Test. It is understood that the damage was done while Petersen was playing a cut shot in the eighth over of the morning.Petersen reached for a short and wide ball from James Anderson to usher it over the slips and in so doing, hurt his hamstring. He did not receive treatment immediately and only called for the physiotherapist after passing his previous highest Test score of 156.A series of stretches and some pills allowed Petersen to continue to lunch. He lasted five overs after lunch before nicking off on 182. In total, Petersen batted for 24.4 overs after the injury was sustained.Although he did not limp noticeably at any stage during his innings, he did appear uncomfortable in parts. Faf du Plessis, who was drafted into the squad on Tuesday after Albie Morkel was ruled out, took his place in the field during the start of England’s innings.Petersen also suffered an injury at the beginning of the tour, when he hurt the joints in his left foot while out on a jog. He missed the first tour match against Somerset in Taunton as a precaution but returned to bat against Kent three days later. He is the fourth South Africa player to be injured in England. Mark Boucher’s lacerated eyeball in Taunton ended the veteran wicketkeeper’s career, Marchant de Lange’s lower back spasms ruled him out for six weeks and his replacement Albie Morkel is currently carrying an ankle injury, which made him unavailable for consideration in this match. 1.30pm, August 4: This story was updated with information on the state of Petersen’s injury
