Porém, basta o time não sofrer gols.

Win 'sets up big final' – Sammy

West Indies captain Darren Sammy said that batting till the final over of the innings, despite the clutch of early wickets, made the difference for his team in the fourth ODI in Mirpur

West Indies captain Darren Sammy said batting out 50 overs was crucial for his side•AFP

West Indies captain Darren Sammy said that batting till the final over of the innings, despite the clutch of early wickets, made the difference for his team in the fourth ODI in Mirpur. They fought their way to 211 for 9 after losing half their side by the 24th over, and that total eventually proved to be too big for a Bangladesh line-up that looked all at sea against quality pace bowling.”Looking at the way the game was unfolding, I always told myself that if we bat till the end we stand the chance of scoring 190-plus,” Sammy said. “It is about applying yourself in the middle. My partnership with [Darren] Bravo was crucial. We just said ‘let us try to bat deep’.”We wanted to have a go in the last four overs. We kept losing wickets, so we had to push [launching the final surge] back. But it proved today that 212 runs was a lot [to chase] on that wicket.”Sammy’s all-round performance was, ultimately, the difference between the two sides. He held firm with the bat after West Indies had fallen to 102 for 6 in the 32nd over from the relative comfort of 71 for 1 just an hour before. He took stock of the situation and batted calmly with Darren Bravo, the pair adding 43 runs for the seventh wicket. Bravo was caught and bowled by offspinner Sohag Gazi, one of several poorly-timed dismissals for West Indies, in the 43rd over.Sammy then had the likes of Veerasammy Permaul and Sunil Narine for company but, even now, rather risking hitting out and allowing his team to be bowled out, he kept his head. He only launched in the last three overs of the innings, taking 35 valuable runs. He did have a life, being dropped at deep-square leg on 30 when West Indies were 168 for 8, and he made it count for his team.”Last game it was Marlon [Samuels], today it is me. It is about players putting their hands up and doing what matters for the team,” Sammy said. “As a leader, you always try to lead from the front. It gives you a good feeling inside. It won’t happen all the time because it is a team sport but when you do it, it feels good.”Sammy also made a major contribution with the ball, removing Anamul Haque and Naeem Islam off successive balls in his first over before accounting for Mominul Haque in his third over. He took advantage of the Bangladesh batsmen’s impatience. With Kemar Roach, his opening partner, he had reduced Bangladesh to 13 for 5 by the sixth over, and the series-levelling win was all but confirmed.West Indies thrived by attacking with pace and short pitched bowling up front and, today, the spinners did the other half of the job. The bowling unit’s showing pleased Sammy: “Our pacers have been taking the wickets throughout the Test series. In this game the ball was carrying nicely, maybe because of the dew. We all know Kemar bowls 90-plus miles per hour. Even [Dwayne] Smith did a good job. Sunny [Narine] and [Veerasammy] Permaul got some spin. All the bowlers put their hands up.”Saturday’s game now, for all intents and purposes, is a final, and West Indies are in the ascendancy. The pressure was on them when they returned to Dhaka from Khulna 2-0 down, and they have turned their form around as they would have liked. “It was a must-win game for us, I’m just happy that the team did what they had to do to win,” Sammy said. “We have had good days in the Test series, the last [one-day] match … We did what we had to do today, which is level the series. It sets up a big final tomorrow.”

'Foreign tours positive for Indian cricket' – Rajput

Lalchand Rajput, the India A coach, has praised the BCCI for arranging more overseas tours for the side ahead of India A’s tour of New Zealand

Lalchand Rajput, the India A coach, has praised the BCCI for arranging more overseas tours for the side, as it exposes India’s future cricketers to different conditions for their all-round grooming. The India A squad is about to embark on a tour of New Zealand, which begins on September 18, after playing in the West Indies in June this year.”The BCCI is doing a great job to send ‘A’ tour abroad more often,” Rajput said. “These are the players who are the bench strength of the Indian team. Once these players go to other countries and get accustomed, and when they play for the country and tour, they are well-prepared.”The squad has assembled at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore for a training camp and Rajput was confident that the preparation would benefit ahead of the tour. The India A team that toured the West Indies had missed out on practice and that had reflected in their 2-1 loss in the unofficial Test series.”We just had two days (before the West Indies tour), and we never had any practice games in the West Indies because it was raining, so we straightaway went to the Test match. There is no excuse, but I think a camp prepares you better for a tour. We are preparing as per New Zealand conditions, so it is good we are in Bangalore because it is as similar to New Zealand as possible. The main aim is to develop all our players to perform in New Zealand conditions.”Any outstation tour is difficult. But I am sure the players are well prepared now, because when you go on away tours you must be mentally strong and that is the key for success.”The side includes Unmukt Chand, the captain of the Indian team that won the Under-19 World Cup in Australia. Rajput said the performance in the ‘A’ side would be a step in the right direction as these tours acts as a bridge between the Under-19 and the international levels of the game.”You can’t directly jump from Under-19 to senior team; there are steps to take. There is a process, and I think India A is part of the process. So you get success in India A and go to the Indian team.”Chand is a very strong player. This is a real test for him. I am sure that if he can pass this course, next step is Indian team.”Yet, he said, the performances in the ‘A’ tours would ideally have to be backed by atleast a season of domestic cricket. “To judge a player, it is very important to play at least one season of first-class cricket. It could be Elite or Plate group, but one season of first-class makes them mature. They know what’s coming at that level, and they are mentally better prepared.”India A is scheduled to play three one-dayers and two unofficial Tests in New Zealand.India A squad: Abhinav Mukund (capt.), Naman Ojha (wk), Mandeep Singh, Anustup Majumdar, Unmukt Chand, Ashok Menaria, Ambati Rayudu, Suryakumar Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Akshay Darekar, Vinay Kumar, Shami Ahmed, Jalaj Saxena, Rahul Sharma, Rituraj Singh and Jaydev Unadkat

Marshall and Cockbain steady Gloucestershire

Hamish Marshall and Ian Cockbain produced a fifth-wicket stand of 125 to aid Gloucestershire’s recovery against Hampshire

06-Aug-2012
ScorecardHamish Marshall and Ian Cockbain produced a fifth-wicket stand of 125 to aid Gloucestershire’s recovery on the opening day of the Division Two match with Hampshire at Bristol.Despite a half-century from Dan Housego, the hosts were in trouble at 85 for 4 after losing the toss until Marshall and Cockbain – who hit 75 and 51 respectively – dug in with a determined partnership, spanning 34 overs, that took their side to a first batting point.Hampshire, who were hampered by a shoulder injury to Dimitri Mascarenhas after he had taken 1 for 24 from 12 overs, then hit back and by the close Gloucestershire had reached 265 for eight. There were two wickets each for David Balcombe and Kabir Ali, while James Tomlinson gave little away in returning 1 for 33 from 19 overs.Benny Howell’s hopes of a big score against his old club were dashed early on as he fell leg before to Kabir, pushing half forward. Marshall, who struck 75, helped Gloucestershire recover from 85 for four by adding 125 with Cockbain versus HampshireIt was 36 for 2 when New Zealander Rob Nicol, who received his Gloucestershire county cap before the start of play, was caught behind fencing at a delivery outside off stump from Balcombe. Then home skipper Alex Gidman fell in unfortunate fashion, run out backing up as Balcombe deflected a straight drive from Housego onto the stumps at the bowler’s end. At lunch it was 73 for 3.Housego reached a solid half-century off 92 balls, with four fours, but perished soon afterwards for 51, losing his off stump to a ball from Mascarenhas in the 37th over. At that point Gloucestershire were really struggling, but Marshall moved to a 108-ball fifty – with just three fours – and by tea he and Cockbain had taken the total to 161 for 4.They added a further 49 in the final session before Marshall, who had been dropped at short-leg on 50 off Liam Dawson, fell to the same bowler – trapped in front when missing a sweep. His score took Marshall’s first-class run-tally for the season to 737 – 336 more than he managed last summer – at an average of 46. He remains more than 200 ahead of any other Gloucestershire player.Cockbain is second in their list, but again failed to press on after reaching a 108-ball fifty, with six fours. He tried to work a straight ball from Balcombe through the leg side and became another lbw victim. At 226 for 6 from 81 overs, Hampshire took the second new ball and – with 10 added – Paul Muchall was bowled shouldering arms by Tomlinson. Richard Coughtrie and Ian Saxelby then saw Gloucestershire to a second bonus point before Saxelby fell to Kabir as the day ended with honours even.

Queensland bowler Chris Swan retires

Chris Swan, the Queensland swing bowler, has announced his retirement from state cricket. Swan, 33, will depart the game having collecting 101 first-class wickets at an average of 25.92 in 31 matches, as well as 31 victims at 27.38 in his 23 one-day appearances.A late starter at the elite level, Swan made his debut for the Bulls at the age of 28, and became a semi-regular member of Queensland’s attack over the next six seasons. His career highlight came in 2010-11, when he took the third best figures in Queensland’s first-class history, with a collection of 13 for 144 in a Sheffield Shield match against South Australia at Allan Border Field.Swan also proved himself a very useful lower-order batsman and scored three first-class half-centuries, averaging 21.15. He also wrote himself into the record books with the bat in 2009-10, when he and Luke Feldman put on 57 for the final wicket to beat Victoria, the highest last-wicket partnership to secure a victory in 120 years of Australian first-class cricket.”I never really thought I was in the mix,” Swan said of his late emergence on the first-class scene. “It took some injuries to some top notch players at the time for me to come into contention and looking back, I was happy just to be given a chance.”Opening the bowling with a legend like Andy Bichel in my debut is still one of my career highlights and that includes winning the one-day final [in 2008-09] and taking the 13 wickets in a game, although taking a six-for and a seven-for in one match was pretty special. I thought taking five wickets for Queensland was about as good as it gets.”The Queensland coach, Darren Lehmann, said Swan was a fine example of a player who never gave up on his own ability.”He was also a quintessential Queenslander,” Lehmann said. “He was great within the group and reminded everyone that playing for your state was something that was to be cherished and celebrated. We’ll miss him from the group, that’s for sure. We all wish him the best for the future and I’m sure we’ll look forward to seeing him around the Gabba down the track.”Swan, who also played one match for the Brisbane Heat last season, said he was keen to play on in grade cricket next summer. A pest controller before he became a professional cricketer, he will also use his spare time to build his business.”Yep, I’ll just concentrate on knocking over termites rather than batsmen from now,” Swan said.

They hurt me mentally – Sarwan

Ramnaresh Sarwan, the West Indies batsman who has not played for his country since June 2011, has turned on the national team’s coaching set up for his continued non-selection.Sarwan, 31, has scored 5,842 Test runs at 40.01 and captained West Indies in two Tests in England in 2007 but was overlooked for this tour and instead signed for Leicestershire where he has been in form with two centuries and two half-centuries and has captained the side while Matthew Hoggard has been injured.”The coach said some negative stuff that hurt me mentally and emotionally,” Sarwan told . “Mentally I was broken down, not from the stress of playing, it’s just certain individuals have drained me mentally. It took a toll on my confidence and the way I play. Everything went away.”Sarwan lost his central contract in 2010 with an “extremely indifferent attitude and sporadic approach towards fitness” cited as the reason. He played four more Tests, scoring 83 runs before being dropped. He is now pleased to be out of the West Indies set-up. “I’m away from all those problems, my mind is at ease and I have had nothing to worry about, no coach to say any negative things,” he said. “At one point I didn’t know which was my back foot and which was my front foot. Now I’m much better, more precise with my movements, everything crystal clear in my head.””I never spoke about this because I was caught up in a shell and I used to not come out of my house for up to three days. My dad was the one to inspire me to start back playing. I was going to stop because they were getting the better of me but when I saw him break down emotionally that inspired me.”Sarwan returned to county cricket with Leicestershire, after scoring 442 runs at 31.57 for Gloucestershire in 2005. His comeback has been a success, with a century in his second match against Derbyshire and scores of 117 and 98 against Essex – form that has prompted many to call for his return to international cricket. But even if he was offered the chance of a recall, Sarwan said he wouldn’t walk out on Leicestershire. “I owe them because they’ve invested in me,” he said. “I’m big on principle and when I was in the dust being kicked by my own people I was given an opportunity by this club and I will not forsake that or betray anyone. I don’t want to find myself in a situation where I was two years ago, where I couldn’t have fun. My happiness is utmost and the most important thing to me. I want to stay focused and forget about what has gone before.”

Rajasthan consign Deccan to third defeat

Not even eight days rest, their best efforts with the bat and Amit Mishra’s three wickets were enough to earn Deccan Chargers a first win in IPL 2012

The Report by Firdose Moonda17-Apr-2012
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details Brad Hodge’s 48 came at a strike rate of 228.57, and that was perhaps the difference between the two sides•AFP

Not even eight days rest, their best efforts with the bat and Amit Mishra’s three wickets were enough to earn Deccan Chargers a first win in IPL 2012. After Kumar Sangakkara and Shikhar Dhawan put on the highest first-wicket partnership of the season, and JP Duminy and Daniel Christian blasted 77 off the last five overs, Chargers piled on a hefty score for Rajasthan Royals to chase, but they were unable to defend it on a flat pitch with small boundaries.Rahul Dravid and Ajinkya Rahane did the groundwork and Brad Hodge finished off fiercely. Almost everything Chargers did, Royals did better. Although Dravid and Rahane shared a stand of only 62, compared to Sangakkara and Dhawan’s 94 , the Royals pair scored at a faster rate. They went at 10.62 runs to the over compared to Sangakkara and Dhawan’s 8.81. Chargers had amassed 119 for 2 after 15 overs, Royals had the same score after 13. Duminy’s 58 came at a strike rate of 223.07, Brad Hodge’s 48 came at a strike rate of 228.57, and that was perhaps the difference between the two sides. With a tall task ahead of them, Royals approached it aggressively. Rahul Dravid tore into an out-of-sorts Dale Steyn in the second over, using the pace to club him for three fours. With the in-form Rahane on the other end, Daniel Christian and birthday-boy Anand Rajan also took a pasting and Royals raced to the fastest fifty in this season’s tournament, off 4.5 overs.Dravid seemed set for a much longer stay at the crease but was foxed by a Christian slower ball that was aimed at his legs. He did not get inside the line and the ball cannoned into the pads and onto the stumps. The wicket brought a short-lived calm to the crease as Rahane and Ashok Menaria consolidated.Unlike Chargers, who suffered a lapse in the mid-section of their innings and scored 23 runs between overs 13 and 16, Royals kept their slump to just two overs. The 8th and 9h overs yielded only eight runs in total but Rahane soon had the wheels turning again with a six over long-off after charging down the track to Mishra.Menaria was not expected to bat at No. 3, given the match situation which needed quick runs, but Royals stuck to their original line-up and he did not let them down. He freed his arms and found the boundary and seemed a worthy partner to Rahane until he pulled straight to short midwicket. Rahane holed out two overs later to cause jitters in the Royals camp. Those nerves would have grown when Shah was dropped by Steyn at long-on when he was on 10 and then caught two balls later at deep midwicket.Hodge did not waste time taking over and ensured the advantage was back with Royals when he clubbed Steyn for four consecutive fours. Hodge cut the short ball, turned the full toss to square leg, lofted another short one over third man and carved a half-volley through the covers to ensure Steyn had the most expensive return of the Chargers’ bowlers. With the anxiety shifting to Chargers, they dropped another catch, putting Johan Botha down and found themselves with only 11 to defend off the last over. Dishant Yagnik, little-known on the international stage, was the unlikely hero. Steyn offered him a touch of width and he found the gap on the off side and followed it up by slapping the ball through the covers to hand Royals victory. This is the second match of in the tournament that Chargers have lost from a seemingly winnable position. Last Monday, they let Mumbai Indians canter to a five-wicket win after having them under their thumb at 95 for 4, chasing 139, in the 17th over. Chargers’ three losses keeps them at the bottom of the points table.
