Villa fans react to Ornstein transfer claim

Reliable reporter David Ornstein believes that Aston Villa may look at signing a central midfielder on deadline day.

The Athletic reporter was speaking live on Sky Sports and had many Villa fans talking on social media.

The Villans have been after a new midfielder this month following Marvelous Nakamba’s serious injury towards the end of 2021. However, so far they have had no luck, with offers for Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur being rejected by Brighton and Juventus respectively.

Marseille’s Boubacar Kamara is thought to be another player on the midfield shortlist, but there have been no significant updates on Villa and the Frenchman for over a week.

According to Ornstein [via @AVFCFaithful], who was speaking on Sky Sports News’ transfer deadline day coverage, Villa may have another nibble at a central midfielder in the final hours of the January window.

Aston Villa urged to sign Romeu

Aston Villa have been told that signing Oriol Romeu from Southampton in the January transfer window would be ‘smart business’.

Former Premier League hitman Kevin Phillips made the claim in an interview with Football Insider.

The lowdown

The Athletic’s Gregg Evans reported last week that Romeu may be on a list of midfield options drawn up for Steven Gerrard by sporting director Johan Lange.

Villa apparently ‘tracked’ Romeu during the summer and it seems that their interest remains heading into the new year.

Defensive midfielder Romeu, who’s previously played for FC Barcelona and Chelsea, has started 17 of Southampton’s 18 Premier League games so far this season.

The 30-year-old is in the penultimate season of his contract at St Mary’s and is valued at £4.5million by Transfermarkt.

The latest

Phillips said the ‘nasty’ Romeu reminded him of Tottenham Hotspur’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – a consistently good but under-the-radar operator.

He thinks the Spaniard would offer Villa a ‘platform’ if they can get the deal done.

“I think Romeu would be a solid option for Villa,” he said.

“He reminds me a lot of Hojbjerg. He is an 8 out of 10 every week but he will never be that player who pulls up trees. I wouldn’t say he ever stands out but he does the nasty side of the game – the tough industrious side of things.

“Villa will know what they’re getting. Romeu is an organiser and a leader. If Villa could secure his services, it’d be smart business. He gives you a platform to build off and allows other more offensive players to play.”

The verdict

Romeu would bring vast experience to Villa Park, with 219 Premier League appearances under his belt.

Phillips compares him to Hojbjerg, but he actually boasts a similar stylistic profile to Liverpool’s Fabinho, standing out among positional peers for his progressive carries, successful aerial duels, tackles and clearances (via FBRef).

Based on Transfermarkt’s calculations, he’d also be fairly cheap, and so it could be a shrewd bit of business for Villa, particularly after they lost Marvelous Nakamba to a long-term injury.

Benitez confirms Lucas Digne wants to leave

Everton have been adding players to their squad this week, with two new signings made in the January transfer window so far.

However, when it comes to outgoings, speculation has been mounting amid a feud at the club, and Rafael Benitez has been addressing rumours today.

What’s the word?

The Everton manager didn’t hold back in his FA Cup pre-match conference this afternoon when it came to talking about a particularly sensitive subject which has been a hot topic of conversation over the last month.

Benitez ranted to the media about the rumoured exit of Toffees left back Lucas Digne and his perspective of the situation, namechecking Everton legend Peter Reid as he responded to questions.

He stated: “I think it was very clear. I want to ask the question to every fan and former players – what Peter Reid will do and say when a players says he does not want to be there. It’s there, simple.

“A couple of conversations with (Digne), he told me what he thought. What do you expect the manager to do when the player is thinking about to leave? I will say again: the fans, former players. What will Peter Reid say if a player goes to the manager and says he does not want to be here?”

“I’m talking about myself also wanting everything from the players. When they do not do that, I can be upset.”

The manager’s passionate speech comes after an argument with the Toffees defender in training just over a month ago, and it has now escalated to Digne being linked with a move away and Benitez confirming in this conference that the player wants to leave Merseyside.

Fans will be gutted

Everton have been struggling to pick up results over the last few months, with just five league wins from the first half of the season, and losing a player as experienced as Digne is something that the fans will be gutted to see.

Some supporters have taken to social media platforms to express their disappointment at the France international being frozen out, with one fan tweeting: “It really is a shame to see Digne leave like this”

The defender has become a fan favourite at the club after offering 126 appearances, six goals and 20 assists for the Toffees during his three-and-a-half years with the Merseyside club, and it seems a real shame for the Goodison Park faithful that the situation had deteriorated to this extent.

Digne did make the bench for the first time in a month last week, but it will be interesting to see if Benitez puts aside his tumultuous relationship with the left-back by naming him in the line-up for the FA Cup game against Hull City tomorrow evening, after a poor defensive performance in his absence against Brighton.

Aston Villa: Contract update on Chukwuemeka

The Birmingham Mail’s Ashley Preece has delivered a promising update on the future of Aston Villa starlet Carney Chukwuemeka.

What’s the story?

The 18-year-old has been involved in the past two Premier League games for Steven Gerrard’s side this season, and now, Preece has claimed that he still expects Chukwuemeka to commit his future to the club.

He said: “A fantastic point; it was all set to be done but Smith wasn’t bringing him on in games prior to him leaving. Pressure was mounting at that time. Carney’s reps said they were in no rush knowing his current deal runs to 2023. I was the reporter who asked Gerrard about his situation last week post-Man City and his reaction was telling, as if he had a direct message to Carney’s agents saying to keep quiet and let him get on with his footy.

“I still expect Carney to commit, though.”

Villa fans will be buzzing

Given that reports from earlier this year had suggested that some of the biggest clubs both in the Premier League and from abroad were keeping an eye on Chukwuemeka’s contract situation at Villa Park, news that he is still expected to put pen to paper on a new deal is sure to leave Villa fans buzzing.

In fact, speaking after he made an appearance against Manchester City, Gerrard himself said: “I think we just need to let the kid play football, let him evolve, let him grow. I think we’ve shown what we think of the kid (on Wednesday night), shown our belief and confidence in him at this level of game.

“But we believe this is the right place for him and if anyone else thinks it’s not I’d like to sit in front of them and discuss that because he’s a local lad and he’s enjoying it. He’s enjoyed the last two weeks – I spoke to him face-to-face and we’ve told him that if he keeps performing he’ll be very much part of the first team set-up so I don’t foresee a problem and I certainly don’t want a problem to brew in the background. And, for me, I don’t think it will.”

With the teenager now being given more of a taste of first-team football under Gerrard, there really isn’t any more reason for Chukwuemeka to feel he would be better served by leaving for elsewhere.

He is an exceptional talent, once dubbed as one of the best in his age group in the country by Christian Purslow and his underlying numbers reveal why.

In just five Premier League 2 appearances this term, he has registered two goals and two assists while his ten strikes and eight goals in only 28 outings for the U18 side is something to be marvelled at.

With those statistics in mind, it’s clear that the teenager possesses an abundant amount of potential, meaning if he does stay in the Midlands, the Villa Park faithful will be delighted.

Meanwhile, Ashley Preece has dropped an Aston Villa transfer update…

Ralf Rangnick must drop Rashford

Manchester United have got back to winning ways by taking all three points from their last three games consecutively in the Premier League, but there is still a lot of work to do at Old Trafford.

Ralf Rangnick appears to have adopted a 4-2-2-2 formation for his Manchester United side, which seems to be working so far, but not as convincingly as hoped, with possession still being lost as much as it was under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and only scoring one goal in every game under their new manager so far.

Rangnick’s Red Devils lost possession 138 times in the game against Norwich, with Bruno Fernandes losing the ball on 26 occasions, closely followed by Marcus Rashford who lost the ball 20 times during the 1-0 win that saw Cristiano Ronaldo score a penalty to secure the three points at Carrow Road.

It’s fair to say that Rashford isn’t having the impact that is expected of him this season, and with Mason Greenwood in fine form, registering three goal involvements in the last five, it makes much more sense to start the 20-year-old forward in one of the two forward positions alongside Ronaldo.

Rashford’s position in the team has become a talking point since Greenwood has been putting much more impressive performances this season so far, with five goals and two assists, putting him two goals and one assist ahead of his teammate, Rashford.

Roy Keane weighed in on Rashford’s mediocrity for Manchester United in the past calling the 24-year-old “shocking” last season;

“I looked at Rashford closely today, he’s had loads of plaudits over the last few months – I know he’s still a young man – but his body language today was shocking, really shocking.

“Shrugging his shoulders when things weren’t going his way, you roll your sleeves up at Man United

The £76.5m-rated has always shown determination and promise with energetic performances where he is all over the pitch in every game under Rangnick so far.

However, his inability to finish his chances or gain a good number of assists for his teammates in the final third could cost him his place in the team very quickly and could inspire Rangnick to move on from the forward, pushing him out of the club, especially now he is linked with a move to Barcelona.

United will face Brentford in a midweek clash, it will be interesting to see if Rangnick sticks to his guns with Rashford, or leaves him on the bench in favour of either Mason Greenwood or Edinson Cavani.

Rangers not eyeing Gennaro Gattuso

A major update has emerged on Rangers’ search for a new manager, regarding Italian coach Gennaro Gattuso…

What’s the talk?

According to a report from Sky Sports, the Gers are not considering a deal to bring the ex-Napoli boss to the club to replace Steven Gerrard.

Derek McInnes and Gattuso have both been ruled out as Rangers continue to consider appointing Dutch manager Gio van Bronckhorst instead.

Gutting

This update from Sky will surely leave Rangers fans gutted as Gattuso could have been an interesting appointment at Ibrox. The retired midfielder, who previously played for the club, is reportedly interested in the role and we published an article explaining why it could be a great move.

However, it now appears as though the Gers have made a decision not to approach the 43-year-old and will continue their search for Steven Gerrard’s replacement without looking at the former Milan and Napoli head coach. This is a major update that rules him out of the running and could leave supporters disappointed that he is not being considered.

Ex-AC Milan and Brazil midfielder Kaka previously lauded his controversial former teammate and said:

“Gattuso? It was great to see him coaching for the first time with my own eyes. He’s the same as he was as a player in terms of energy and motivation.

“He spent the whole time motivating the team and demanding the best, but that’s not all. Rino is very good, he’s managed to study and prepare well, and all these things make him a phenomenon.”

Gattuso has 122 games of managerial experience in the Serie A with Napoli and Milan under his belt, winning an impressive 1.86 points per game in that time. He never finished below seventh in his four seasons between the two Italian giants, finishing fifth twice, and he won the Italian Cup with Napoli in the 2019/20 campaign – showing that he has the quality as a coach to win silverware.

This shows that he is a talented manager who has proven himself at the top level in Italy, as he was able to successfully manage two huge clubs in Milan and Napoli who like the Gers, traditionally have higher expectations. Therefore, he could potentially have been a good appointment by Rangers and that is precisely why fans will be gutted that the club are not interested in exploring a deal for him.

West Ham: Huge Declan Rice update emerges

A major update has emerged on the future of Declan Rice at West Ham United…

What’s the word?

According to transfer insider Dean Jones, the 22-year-old midfielder is concentrating on enjoying success with the Hammers, rather than attempting to seal a move elsewhere.

“I’d be very, very surprised if he left in the next year or so now,” he claimed to GIVEMESPORT.

“I think that the tide turned really and his big moment passed. Now he is fully focused on what he is doing at West Ham.”

Some of the Premier League’s biggest clubs have been linked with a move for the England regular in recent times.

Back in September, 90min suggested that Rice was preparing for this current season to be his last in the claret and blue amid interest from Liverpool, both Manchester clubs and Chelsea.

Huge boost

This claim, therefore, will serve as a huge boost to manager David Moyes and the Irons squad as it could mean that they get to keep hold of their leading talisman and current vice-captain for a very long time.

With Mark Noble retiring at the end of the season, there is even more of an incentive to stay as he is next in line to pick up the captaincy full-time. The east Londoners have also been competing in the Europa League, where they have advanced into the knockout stages.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-west-ham-news-transfer-updates-gsb-kretinsky-moyes” title=”Read the latest West Ham news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

Meanwhile, they currently occupy third place in the Premier League, meaning there is a very good chance that they remain in a European competition ahead of next season.

Their chances of doing so are certainly aided by Rice and his ever-improving form. He is absolutely imperative to Moyes right now.

As per WhoScored, he rates as their best player in both the top-flight (7.46) and in Europe (7.62). Only Ben Johnson (three) averages more tackles per game in the league than Rice (2.7), whilst he tops the charts for interceptions per game (1.9).

Similarly, the bulk of West Ham’s play runs through him as he averages a squad-high 58.4 passes per outing, too.

Irons teammate, summer signing Nikola Vlasic, was recently left in awe by the English powerhouse. “He is so fast and so quick and even with the ball this season I think he is much better and improved in attack. He is unbelievable for me, he has impressed me the most,” he said (via the Evening Standard).

On the above evidence, you’ll struggle to find anyone not hugely excited and buoyed by this development. Moyes is in line for one massive long-term boost if it turns out to be the case.

Ange-ball is finally starting to bear fruit

While results under the new leadership of Ange Postecoglou were somewhat mixed in the early stages of the season – with Celtic being dumped out of Champions League qualifying in the second round, as well as losing three of their opening seven Scottish Premiership fixtures and both of their opening two Europa League group stage games – things are finally starting to look on the up for the 56-year-old at Parkhead.

Indeed, the Bhoys are now on a run of three straight victories in all competitions, a series of games that has seen the club secure their first and second domestic away wins of the season, as well as a crucial 2-0 victory over Ferencvarosi TC in the Europa League – a result which keeps Postecoglou’s hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages of the competition alive.

However, while results are ultimately the most important metric a manager is judged on, it is not only Celtic’s accumulation of points that has improved for Postecoglou in recent weeks, but also the implementation of the Greek-Australian’s much-fabled brand of football.

Upon his arrival at Celtic this summer, Postecoglou’s appointment promised Celtic fans a style of play that was possession-based, relentlessly high intensity and extremely attacking – and, while there was some evidence of this during the early stages of the season, with the Bhoys typically dominating possession of the ball, the results did not always follow.

Indeed, in the 2-1 defeat to Heart of Midlothian back in July, Celtic enjoyed a whopping 73% of the ball and completed 429 more passes than their opposition, however, despite this domination, Postecoglou’s side created just one big chance over the course of the 90 minutes – the same number Hearts managed.

It was a similar story in the 1-0 loss to Livingston, with the Bhoys having 79% possession and completing 497 more passes than the Lions, although this time the Hoops failed to create even one big chance in the match.

However, the tide has certainly turned during the last three fixtures, with Celtic enjoying 61% possession, creating four big chances and completing 217 more passes than Aberdeen in the 2-1 win. They then boasted 73% of the ball, created one big chance and completed 443 more passes against Motherwell in the 2-0 victory, and had 67% possession, created seven big chances and succeeded with 371 more passes than Ferencvarosi in the 2-0 win.

And, while FBref does not track data for Scottish Premiership fixtures, there is a clue in the Bhoys’ Europa League win as to how Postecoglou has managed to improve his side’s creativity.

Indeed, when looking at Celtic’s pressing in the early stages of the season, the Hoops often applied pressure to opposition players in their defensive and middle thirds a greater number of times than in their attacking third – something that is not surprising, as Postecoglou likes his side to apply pressure extremely high up the pitch.

However, against Ferencvarosi, it would appear as if the 56-year-old instructed his side to change tact somewhat, with Celtic registering the most pressing in their own defensive third – 23 pressures were made in the defensive third while 46 in the middle third and then 61 in attacking third. That’s something that would suggest the manager wanted to draw the Hungarian side out of shape by allowing them to have more of the ball, before springing a counter-attack to catch them on the break.

And, considering both the result and display on Tuesday afternoon was arguably Celtic’s most impressive of the season, perhaps this is something we will more of from the Hoops in the coming weeks – as, with the Bhoys creating seven big chances against Ferencvarosi, it is certainly a tactic that appeared to work.

Conte’s Spurs transfer budget revealed

According to The Sun, Antonio Conte will be given a £150m transfer budget after completing his move to Tottenham.

The Lowdown: Conte to move to Spurs

The Tottenham managerial position opened up when Nuno Espirito Santo was relieved of his duties on Monday after Spurs’ 3-0 loss to Manchester United at the weekend.

That vacancy has now been filled by Conte, with the BBC confirming just after midday that Spurs had appointed the Italian as their new manager.

A few hours before the appointment was confirmed, Fabrizio Romano had claimed that the 52-year-old would be at Hotspur Way on Tuesday morning to meet with the players and Fabio Paratici.

The Latest: Conte to be given big budget

As per The Sun’s report, Conte is set to be given a big transfer budget to put his own stamp on the squad.

The report details how the former Chelsea boss ‘snubbed’ the Lilywhites due to a lack of ambition in the summer, but claimed that a ‘stunning U-turn’ from Daniel Levy and Joe Lewis has led to a ‘huge’ £290k-per-week contract and ‘heavy backing in the transfer market’.

The Verdict: Needed

It is clear that all is not right at Tottenham. They struggled under Jose Mourinho last season and things got even worse under Nuno, who lasted just four months in the role.

While it’s important to have the right man in charge, the squad needs a revamp. Star man and captain Harry Kane is not far away from his 30s and looks largely disinterested; and while perhaps the arrival of Conte will renew his desire to give 100 per cent to Tottenham, this is a squad still with several of the players who have now been partly responsible for the departures of three different managers.

Conte will know that, and he is notoriously stubborn. If he wants to boost the squad in the winter, he is unlikely to take no for an answer. A £150m budget should give him the opportunity to bring in some real quality as he hopes to take the Lilywhites up the table.

Lage drops Traore contract update

Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Bruno Lage has dropped an update on Adama Traore’s contract talks.

What’s been said?

In recent comments cited by the Express & Star, the 44-year-old Wolves boss stated that, although he is unaware at which stage the winger’s contract discussions are currently at, he is confident that a positive resolution will be found between the player and the club, as well as stating his belief that the 25-year-old is happy at Molineux.

When asked about the contract talks, Lage spoke positively of recent developments: “I don’t know anything, what I know is the club want to make a new contract with him.

“From what I can see every day, Adama is happy to stay here and happy with his teammates. Sometimes these kind of things take time and I think in the end it will be good for both.

“I’m very happy with what we have in our wingers because we have the competition we want and the players with a different profile. A player like him is very important. He’s a good guy and knows what he needs to improve.

“He’s working hard to improve his inside game. He started the season very well and I’m very happy with what he’s doing at the moment.”

Fans surely buzzing

Considering just how impressive Traore has been for Wolves this season, the news that Lage believes the club will be successful in their negotiations with the Spain international is sure to have left fans buzzing.

Indeed, over his seven Premier League appearances this term, while the £27m-rated man is yet to find the back of the net or register an assist, he has nevertheless created two big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of two shots and making 1.7 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the £43k-per-week winger average a rather remarkable SofaScore match rating of 7.42, ranking him not only as Wolves’ best performer in the league, but also as the joint 16th-best in the entirety of the division.

As such, should the 25-year-old indeed go on to put pen to paper on a new deal with the club, it would undoubtedly come as a major boost to Lage and his side, as Traore is a player who is clearly a hugely important part of the Wolves team.
