Report: Liverpool and FSG submitted huge £75m+ offer to sign Germany star

Liverpool are believed to have submitted an offer of over £75m for an “incredible” player who shone at Euro 2024, according to a new transfer claim.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds continue to be linked with new signings, following a relatively quiet summer in the market, only bringing in Giorgi Mamardashvili and Federico Chiesa, with the former remaining at Valencia for the current campaign.

Paris Saint-Germain star Xavi Simons has been mentioned as one target for Liverpool, with the Dutchman scoring for the Netherlands against England in the semi-finals of the Euros. Virgil van Dijk has described him as a “very talented player”, which speaks volumes about his ability.

Liverpool are also thought to be among the clubs interested in signing Bayern Munich superstar Jamal Musiala, with Manchester City also reportedly eyeing him up. His current club are desperate to tie him down to a new contract, though, seeing him as one of their most prized assets.

Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg is a young talent with a big future in the game and the Reds have been linked with a move for him. Real Madrid are providing strong competition, however, highlighting how highly rated the 17-year-old is.

Liverpool submitted £77m+ offer for "incredible" player

According to Kicker [via Paisley Gates], Liverpool, and by extension FSG, submitted a monster £77.7m offer for Bayer Leverkusen ace Florian Wirtz earlier this year. Bayern also attempted to snap him up, but he decided to stay put at the reigning Bundesliga champions.

Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz

The 21-year-old isn’t out of contract at Leverkusen until the summer of 2027, so it is likely to take an enormous amount of money to prise him away from Xabi Alonso’s side.

Wirtz is a magnificent young player with such a big future in the game, so he would have been a spectacular signing by Liverpool if they had managed to strike a deal for him. Former Reds midfielder Joe Cole is a big admirer, saying of him back in May:

“Incredible. I’ve watched him three times this year now and he’s blown me away every time. He’s got a South American flair with a German efficiency about him. We’ve all heard of Jude Bellingham, Cole Palmer and Phil Foden, and Musiala. This lad will be new to the British viewers. Let me tell you, he is every bit as talented as those players. He could go on to be anything.”

It is encouraging that Liverpool were reportedly willing to spend big on Wirtz, suggesting that the money is there to sign big-name players, and it could be that he remains a target moving forward.

He enjoyed a good Euros with Germany, scoring twice in three starts in the competition, and he could only get better with age in the coming years. England thrash India by eight wickets with all-round display

A combined eight wickets from Sophie Ecclestone, Anya Shrubsole, Katherine Brunt, and Kate Cross, followed by fifties from Tammy Beaumont and Natalie Sciver helped England hand India an eight-wicket thrashing in Bristol to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.Related

Chasing 202, and their 100th ODI win at home, England surpassed the opposition’s powerplay score of 27 for 2 in just 5.1 overs, their tally in the first ten overs 61 for the loss of Lauren Winfield-Hill’s wicket. The run rate throughout the innings remained a study in contrast to India’s: 82 for 1 in 15 overs as opposed to India’s 45 for 2 and 100 in the 19th over against India’s in the 32nd. The 150 came inside 29 overs and in another six overs, the hosts overhauled the target, the winning run – tellingly for India’s lacklustre all-round performance – coming off a wide.Leading the charge in England’s pursuit was opener Beaumont, who remained unbeaten on 87. She spearheaded the chase with two fifty-plus partnerships – for the second and third wickets – worth 59 and 119 with Heather Knight and Sciver respectively. Sciver was also unbeaten, on 74.Beaumont blunted India’s three-pronged spin attack with nimble footwork down the track, powerful drives on the off side, and copious use of the sweep shot. She reached her fifty, 13th in the format, brooming an innocuous offspinning delivery from Deepti Sharma past a diving Harmanpreet Kaur at deep square. A glorious inside-out lofted drive for four was the highlight in Beaumont’s gallery of pristine strokes that featured 12 fours and a six. Her six off Kaur to level the scores off the penultimate ball of the match was equally emphatic. After Ekta Bisht provided the second breakthrough, taking the top of the off stump of Knight, who made a 30-ball 18 in what was her 50th ODI appearance as England captain, Sciver joined in the fun. India’s six-bowler attack looked far from threatening, as did their field placements and the fielding itself, and at no point did the visitors force errors off Beaumont or Sciver in a sustained manner.Having begun cautiously, Sciver upped the tempo through a gradual acceleration en route to her 15th fifty in ODIs and the 2000-run milestone in the format. Dropped on 12 by Bisht, who pipped Sneh Rana to the second spin-bowling slot in the Indian line-up, Sciver brought up the century stand with Beaumont with a glorious hit over the bowler’s head, off Kaur.Carting 10 fours and a six in her run-a-ball knock, Sciver took Bisht for the most runs – 22 off 14 – among India’s bowlers. The second free hit she swatted off seamer Shikha Pandey’s back-to-back front-foot no-balls in her fifth over was the pick of Sciver’s boundaries and it helped England near the 150-mark. Her offensive in Beaumont’s company ensured debutant Sophia Dunkley had to wait longer for her maiden ODI innings.Earlier, under overcast, windy conditions, on a fresh pitch with decent carry and movement that changed little as the match progressed, five-over opening spells in the powerplay from Brunt and Shrubsole denied India any room to make an early imprint on the proceedings. In an exemplary display of discipline and reliance on scrambled-seam variations, the fast-bowling tandem parched India of scoring opportunities after England opted to bowl. The short ball was also employed to good effect. Debutant Shafali Verma, who, at 17 years and 150 days old, became the youngest player – male or female – to represent India in all formats of the game, fell to a failed pull while backing away to a Brunt offcutting bouncer. In keeping with the overarching trend of sluggish scoring that underpinned India’s innings, No. 3 Punam Raut, too, failed to inject any urgency to their approach. First-change Sciver, who finished wicketless, conceded two fours in her second over, both to Raut’s front-foot punches. She struck a further two fours in her 61-ball 32 before her 56-run, 96-ball third-wicket stand with Mithali Raj ended with Ecclestone catching Raut off Cross at mid-off.That England didn’t introduce spin, in the form of left-arm spinner Ecclestone, who finished with 3 for 40, or legspinner Sarah Glenn until the 21st over and could hold back the second spells of their premier quicks, Brunt and Shrubsole, until well past the 30th over was a measure of the hosts’ control over the innings.Kaur was the next to depart. Attempting to guide an Ecclestone arm ball towards third man, the India vice-captain’s back-foot stroke ended up offering the slightest of edges to wicketkeeper Amy Jones.India crawled to 100 in 31.5 overs after Deepti Sharma joined Raj in the middle and reinstated the left-right combination. Shrubsole returned for her second spell in the 42nd over. Off the first ball, Raj reached her 56th ODI fifty to a loud cheer from the 1200-strong crowd with a lofted four over mid-on. A ball later, though, Sharma became England’s fifth – and Shrubsole’s second – wicket on the day, after her attempt to nudge one off the pads saw the ball ping her in front of the leg and off. India reviewed but without any success.Pooja Vastrakar’s arrival at the crease marked a shift in gears for India. Raj showed more urgency at upping the run rate thereafter, slicing past point and picking the region behind short fine for back-to-back fours off Shrubsole, who gave away 15, the most in an over up to that point, in the 44th over.An unsure attempt at dabbing the ball past the keeper in Ecclestone’s first over of her second and final spell had Raj lose the top of her off stump. An innings that had everything from her copping a blow on her forearm owing to a seeming reluctance against taking the short ball head-on to dropping anchor to allow for a rebuild, Raj’s 108-ball 72 proved pivotal in India’s pursuit of a respectable score.Had it not been for No. 7 Vastrakar’s 17-ball 15, though, India may not have even got to 200. In the end, 201 proved far from adequate to challenge the defending ODI world champions.

Sold for £3.5m: Celtic struck gold with big flop who now plays in Australia

Celtic’s faultless start to the 2024/25 Scottish Premiership campaign continued on Saturday with a comfortable 2-0 win over Hearts at Parkhead.

The Hoops have now won all five of their matches in the division, without conceding a single goal, after goals from new signings Arne Engels and Luke McCowan.

Despite the win, there were some underwhelming performers on the pitch for the Scottish giants and one of them was centre-forward Kyogo Furuhashi, who endured a difficult afternoon – losing 100% of his duels and leaving the pitch with no meaningful contributions.

FFC have urged Brendan Rodgers to finally ditch the Japan international from the starting XI and that would present Adam Idah with a chance to prove his worth.

Celtic splashed out a fee of £8.5m, which could rise to £9.5m with add-ons, to sign the Ireland international from Norwich City on a permanent deal, after his loan spell last term.

The Bhoys will be hoping that it turns out to be a profitable investment on the 23-year-old striker, as they have not always had the best of luck when spending big on new centre-forwards.

One number nine the club had a howler with initially was Patryk Klimala, who struggled at Parkhead before the club later hit the jackpot with him.

How much Celitc paid for Patryk Klimala

Back in January 2020, Celtic reportedly agreed a fee of around £3.5m to sign the 21-year-old marksman from Polish outfit Jagiellonia Białystok.

It was claimed at the time that Neil Lennon had identified the forward as a top target during the January transfer window, and that the Hoops had beaten Danish giants Copenhagen to his signature.

They activated a €4m release clause in his contract with the Polish side, which allowed them to secure his services for £3.5m, as Lennon viewed him as a strike partner for Odsonne Edouard.

Former Celtic striker Patryk Klimala.

He had come up through the youth ranks with Jagiellonia Białystok, where he scored a stunning 17 goals in nine U19 matches, before emerging as a first-team option.

Klimala scored 11 goals in 50 senior outings for the club, including seven goals in 17 league games during the first half of the 2019/20 campaign, and this shows that Celtic were buying him for his potential.

The 21-year-old striker did not arrive at Parkhead with a proven track record of scoring goals and that made the £3.5m spent on him a significant gamble by the Scottish giants.

Unfortunately, it was not a gamble that paid off for Celitc on the pitch as the Polish marksman went on to struggle throughout his time on the field for the Hoops.

Patryk Klimala's Celtic career

The young striker only made four appearances in all competitions for the Bhoys during the second half of the 2019/20 campaign, and failed to find the back of the net.

After his return of seven goals and three assists in 17 Extraklasa matches during the first half of the season, the forward did not record a single goal or assist in his two outings in the Scottish Premiership.

Former Celtic striker Patryk Klimala.

Klimala was then offered more opportunities to showcase his qualities in Glasgow during his first full season at the club, in the 2020/21 campaign.

The Poland U21 international played 24 matches in all competitions for the Hoops but only contributed with three and zero assists for the Bhoys.

As you can see in the table above, Klimala struggled at the top end of the pitch in the Premiership, with five ‘big chances’ missed and zero assists to go along with his three goals in 17 games.

The centre-forward only completed 68% of his attempted passes, completing 2.5 per game on average, as he struggled to handle the step up in quality in Scotland.

By April of that season, Celtic decided to part ways with the striker and, surprisingly, they were able to recoup all of the money they paid for him.

MLS side New York Red Bulls swooped in to sign the young attacker for a reported fee of $4.8m (£3.5m), per Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph, and the Hoops hit the jackpot with that sale, based on his decline since then.

Where Patryk Klimala is now

At the time of writing (16/09/2024), Klimala is on loan at Sydney FC in Australia, having joined them earlier this month, after being allowed to leave on a temporary basis by Slask Wroclaw.

Transfermarkt currently has his market value at a staggeringly low €600k (£500k), which is a significant drop-off from the £3.5m Celtic sold him for, at the age of 26.

The Polish striker enjoyed a solid, if unspectacular, time in the Big Apple after his move from Glasgow, with a return of 14 goals and 11 assists in 63 matches in all competitions.

He then spent a year with Hapoel Beer Sheva, from January 2023 to January 2024, and only managed four goals in 23 appearances for the club before being allowed to join Slask Wroclaw on a free transfer at the start of this year.

As you can see in the table above, Klimala endured a frustrating time in the Polish top-flight for Wroclaw during the second half of the 2023/24 campaign, with zero goals and four ‘big chances’ missed in 11 matches.

The 26-year-old former Celtic flop was then dropped down to the second team for the start of this season and scored four goals in four games in the fourth tier before being sent out on loan to Australia.

Overall, this shows that the Hoops hit the jackpot when they sold their big flop for a fee of £3.5m as his career has gone downhill since moving on from Glasgow, as shown by his faltering form and his plummeting market value.

Klimala should be in the prime years of his career, at 26, but is, instead, struggling and moving from club-to-club to find his form, which shows that Celtic struck gold by raking in £3.5m for him.

Alongside Mac Allister: Liverpool’s 8/10 ace stole the show for his country

Liverpool might have paused but many of Arne Slot's first-teamers have not, with the September international break in full swing and several players carrying impressive club form over to their nations.

After a perfect start to the season, with three Premier League wins on the trot so far, all is well at Anfield, but Slot must prepare for a gruelling period up ahead that will see five fixtures played across two weeks, and the Dutchman will be sweating over possible injuries to key figures.

Alexis Mac Allister missed training this week due to a 'muscle overload', Lionel Scaloni confirmed, but fears of a layoff have since been allayed by a masterful performance for Argentina against Chile on Thursday night.

Alexis Mac Allister's performance vs Chile

Mac Allister's metronomic presence is oh-so-important for Liverpool. He might not have been the most notable star of the first few weeks of the campaign, but the 25-year-old sure has made a difference, crunching challenges and sharp, controlled passes galore.

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister

During the recent victory against Manchester United at Old Trafford, he was the unseen influence, operating in the shadowed half spaces to control and dismantle the beleaguered hosts.

But against Chile, the Albiceleste sensation dominated in a more conspicuous effort, opening the scoring during the 3-0 victory, Argentina's first since winning the Copa America in the summer, with GOAL handing the maestro an 8/10 match rating and praising his link-up play with his strikers, Lautaro Martinez and Julian Alvarez.

As per Sofascore, he took 53 touches and completed 88% of his passes in a commanding effort, but Mac Allister isn't the only Redman to have caught the eye, with Conor Bradley staking yet another claim for a starring role in Slot's squad.

Conor Bradley's display for Northern Ireland

Bradley finds himself wrangling with something of a conundrum, for he is one of the most talented young right-backs in the business but serves as deputy to Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is one of the world's finest players and undroppable.

The upcoming glut of fixtures, however, opens up ample opportunity for the Northern Irish star to impress, having enjoyed second-half introductions in each of his outfit's Premier League games so far this term.

And after producing a scintillating performance against Luxembourg for the Green and White Army – handed an 8/10 match score by BelfastLive's Steven Crawford following that 2-0 triumph – the 21-year-old is certainly doing himself no harm in his quest for prominence.

Conor Bradley Northern Ireland Graphic

He's combative and cultured in a way that belies his youth and comparative inexperience, with a contrasting playing style to that of Alexander-Arnold which plays into his hands concerning his development.

Fast and furious with a rounded style, Bradley is going to enjoy a successful career and showcased his qualities on the international stage with eight duels notably won, as per Sofascore – Slot, no doubt, has taken note.

The youngster even went close to getting himself on the scoresheet just after the hour mark on Thursday evening – as shown below – with manager Michael O'Neill subsequently stating that he will "go to a very, very high level in the game". High praise indeed.

Bradley's only going to get better, and Liverpool might just want to ensure he gets given plenty of game time to propel him ever closer to the forefront of the Premier League scene.

More old gold from Darren Stevens as century puts Kent on top

Stevens becomes oldest Championship centurion since 1986

ECB Reporters' Network09-Apr-2021Veteran allrounder Darren Stevens starred with an unbeaten century to put Kent in the driving seat on a rain-affected second day of their LV= County Championship clash against Northamptonshire.Stevens, who will celebrate his 45th birthday later this month, struck 116 not out – his 35th first-class hundred – and became the oldest player since 1986 to register three figures in a County Championship fixture. He shared partnerships of 74 with Harry Podmore and 63 with Miguel Cummins for the last two wickets, shepherding Kent to a first-innings total of 455 at Northampton.Afternoon rain restricted the Northamptonshire response to just 15.2 overs, although a flamboyant undefeated 54 by Ricardo Vasconcelos enabled them to make swift inroads on the deficit, reaching 91 for 1 at the close.”I’m really appreciative of the tail helping me out,” Stevens said. “I was an angry man when Podmore got out because I thought we were going really nicely and I’d not batted with Miguel before! So I said to him ‘do you want to face spin or seam?’ and he said ‘I’m good, man’. Finally getting to 450 was great and we’re pleased with that.”We bowled pretty poorly but Miguel looks like he’s a bit of a handful and I think he’ll be key for us. I think that’s one of these situations where seamers are looking to tie an end up while the quicker bowlers hopefully do the damage.”Northamptonshire’s hopes of wrapping up the visitors’ innings quickly in the morning gained a boost in the fourth over as Tom Taylor removed Matt Milnes, steering him to Alex Wakely at second slip. However, Podmore proved a capable foil for Stevens, who was largely content to keep picking up singles as his partner slammed a string of boundaries off Ben Sanderson to reach 29.Offspinner Rob Keogh finally broke the ninth-wicket stand, tempting Podmore into a swing across the line for Adam Rossington to complete the stumping, but Kent were by no means finished. With debutant Cummins blocking confidently and rotating the strike, Stevens inched towards his hundred, clipping Nathan Buck over square leg for six before pulling the single that raised the landmark from 120 balls. There seemed no end to the home side’s frustration when Vasconcelos, at slip, was unable to cling on to a sharp chance from Cummins, but Taylor eventually dismissed the left-hander for 24, blasting out his middle stump. The players returned after lunch sporting black armbands and lined up on the outfield for a two-minute silence to mark the Duke of Edinburgh’s passing before Northamptonshire began their reply.Podmore took some punishment at the hands of Vasconcelos, his first three overs going for 31 as the opener unleashed a spate of cuts and cover drives to bring up his half-century in 45 deliveries. Vasconcelos put together a brisk opening partnership of 77 with Ben Curran, the only Northamptonshire casualty so far after chopping Cummins’ third ball on to his stumps for 24.

Premier League game refereed by suspended David Coote at the centre of more controversy… this time involving Man Utd

PGMOL chief Howard Webb says David Coote was wrong to award a penalty to West Ham in their win over Manchester United, following a VAR intervention.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Coote's career as a Premier League referee is hanging in the balance and now any return has been cast into further doubt after PGMOL chief Webb admitted his decision to award West Ham a penalty in their recent win over Manchester United was wrong. Coote initially waved play on after Danny Ings was brought down in the box by Matthijs de Ligt in the final minutes of the game, with the referee reversing his decision and awarding a penalty after being advised by VAR to check the incident on the monitor. Jarrod Bowen cooly converted from the spot to give the Hammers a big win, with Erik ten Hag then sacked as head coach following that result.

    WHAT WEBB SAID

Speaking on Sky Sports' , Webb said: "I thought it was a misread by the VAR. A VAR that's normally really talented and reliable, but gets uber-focused in this situation on De Ligt's leg. His leg coming through on to Danny Ings, not making any contact with the ball. The ball's already past De Ligt as he makes contact with Danny Ings. And the VAR sees that as a clear foul. I think he (Michael Oliver) was too focused on that aspect. I don't think he should have got involved. I think this is a situation where we'd leave the on-field decision as it is, probably whichever way it's called. On balance, I don't think it's a penalty kick."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Webb added that the PGMOL are taking the recent scandal very seriously and will be conducting a full investigation before deciding Coote's future. But with his public criticism of Liverpool – in particular Jurgen Klopp – there would be severe backlash if he were to be involved in a game concerning the Reds again, or any that could have implications on their league position.

    WHAT NEXT FOR COOTE?

There is no timeline yet for when a decision will be made on the match official, but Coote has been pulled out of his duties during the interational break. He will no longer be able to referee in UEFA competitions either, until there is a conclusion to the case.

Major schedule changes unlikely as counties digest government roadmap

A handful of high-profile fixtures could be moved to help maximise ticket revenues

Some lucrative fixtures could yet switch dates•PA Images via Getty Images

Any changes to the domestic schedule in the 2021 English season are likely to be limited to a handful of high-value games, after the government revealed a roadmap out of lockdown last week. While the government’s roadmap does present some challenges for a county game desperate to maximise ticket revenues, various meetings between the counties and the ECB have concluded as much will be lost as is gained by widespread fixture changes. The T20 Blast starts on June 9, nearly two weeks ahead of the government’s anticipated date for the lifting of social-distancing measures on June 21. As a result, games played in that window will have attendances limited to a maximum 50% (and probable 25% according to current regulations) of ground capacity. But while some counties hoped they might be able to swap the rounds of County Championship cricket scheduled for the weeks starting July 4 or July 11, they have now accepted this would not be practical. Several of the Championship games due to be played over that period are at ‘festival’ grounds such as Scarborough, Cheltenham and Chesterfield, with the counties involved confident of good attendances. There would also be issues with TV schedules – Sky Sports have plans to show T20 games in the period before the lifting of social-distancing measures – and ground availability, with the Ageas Bowl likely to host the World Test Championship final from June 18. Plans to play the entire group stage of the Blast in the period after social distancing has been lifted were also abandoned as impractical as there were only 29 days available in which to play the tournament. As a result, it has been decided the published fixture list will not be changed.Related

Blast, RLC fixtures announced as 2021 schedule takes shape

There are a few exceptions. ESPNcricinfo understands that a handful of games which might be expected to sell heavily and disproportionately impact the finances of the host county could still be rearranged so they are played after all social-distancing measures are lifted. Among those games are the Middlesex vs Surrey fixture, scheduled for Lord’s on June 10, and Durham vs Yorkshire, scheduled to be played at Chester-le-Street on June 11.It is likely those matches will be swapped with T20 fixtures deemed less likely to attract full-house crowds currently scheduled to be played later in the tournament. Tickets for the majority of fixtures in the Blast were put on sale by counties on Monday. While Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister, originally said social distancing measures would be from June 21 at the earliest, there are some hopes the government may accelerate the end of lockdown. With the number of Covid-19 cases falling steadily at present and the number of those vaccinated rising sharply, there are those around the counties hopeful full houses may return in time for the entire Blast schedule. Wales’ roadmap out of lockdown – which will affect Glamorgan’s preparations for the season – is yet to be announced. One alteration to the Championship schedule has been confirmed, with Surrey shifting their home fixture against Gloucestershire, which starts on May 27, from Guildford to The Oval in anticipation of being able to accommodate a limited number of members. Counties have begun to unveil their pre-season schedules, with fixtures starting from the end of March.

England have appointed only the third foreign coach in their history with the installment of Tuchel as Gareth Southgate's successor, following in the footsteps of the late Sven Goran-Eriksson and Fabio Capello. However, there have been multiple concerns raised by people within the game, including Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville, insisting that the England manager should be English.

Wenger has now joined that chorus, insisting that he could not have managed England when he was a coach because of his loyalty to France. Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, by comparison, insists that England fans simply have to get behind their new boss, regardless of his nationality.

WHAT WENGER SAID

Wenger told BeIN Sports: "I just feel – to make it as simple as possible – If I’m the manager of England and I play against France I cannot sing the national anthem of France. To me on that front, I prefer that the manager is from the country. Why should the player have to be from a country and not the manager? There is a big inference."

He added: "I think he is a perfect coach and a perfect candidate, but he's not English. But it's allowed so there is nothing wrong with that."
