How the game played outThe early season woes of Lahore Qalandars continued in Rawalpindi as Tom Banton and Haider Ali’s aggressive knocks helped set a total of 132 that was well out of reach, setting up a 16-run win for Peshawar Zalmi in a match that was rain-reduced to 12 overs. The pair struck twin 34s at better than two runs per ball, combining for a total of six sixes.Medium pacer Dilbar Hussain did his best to rein in the scoring rate with a four-wicket haul, striking immediately upon his entry in the eighth over to get Haider, but by that stage Zalmi’s batting unit had given a solid platform for some lusty late hitting by Lewis Gregory, Darren Sammy and Wahab Riaz for a further four sixes.Chris Lynn spearheaded a fiery reply by Qalandars to get them to 48 for 0 in four overs, well in line with the required run rate in the 12-over chase. But Gregory derailed the replay upon his entry into the attack in the fifth over, striking twice in his first five balls to claim Lynn and then Hafeez on his way to a four-wicket haul of his own. Qalandars stuttered the rest of the way as wickets fell in regular intervals mainly to Gregory, whose fine all-round display earned him Player of the Match honours.Turning pointLynn had savaged Hasan Ali’s medium pace in the second over, cracking a trio of fours over third man, cover and extra cover. But his attempt to flat-bat a short ball from Gregory over long-off failed to clear Hasan on the boundary, and the wheels quickly fell off as Gregory continued to flummox the Qalandars batsmen with a regular diet of change of pace deliveries.Star of the dayGregory began his day by hammering legspinner Maaz Khan for a straight six and then slicing Dilbar over third man for another maximum in a crucial late burst with the bat. After striking with his first ball in the field, Gregory outfoxed Hafeez four balls later with an offcutter heaved to Banton at deep midwicket for wicket number two in his haul.Fakhar Zaman, who gave multiple chances, drove a fuller ball high to Liam Livingstone at long-on to give Gregory a third wicket. The Englishman rounded off his haul nabbing Sohail Akhtar caught behind. One ball after the Qalandars captain heaved him for six over the leg side, Gregory dragged his length back to cramp Sohail trying to cut, resulting in a healthy edge through to Kamran Akmal. Gregory also arguably could have had a fifth wicket had Mohammad Amir Khan come forward instead of backpedalling all the way up against the rope at deep third man on an uppercut off the bat of Samit Patel, only for the ball to land two yards in front of his feet. The big missUmpire Tariq Rasheed called Shaheen Afridi for a no ball on the Pakistani quick’s first ball coming on in the third over, but replays showed his foot was comfortably behind the line. Shaheen was not pleased, even less so when Banton sliced him over third man for six on the free hit, one of several mighty blows struck on the day by the right-hander.Where the teams standQalandars are still searching for their first victory of the season, having lost each of their first three matches. Zalmi are tied for third place on four points with Islamabad United, though United have a superior net run rate.
Tottenham Hotspur will not play any football this weekend due to the FA Cup semi-finals, so will have a rest ahead of a crucial home clash against Arsenal in the Premier League in just over one week.
While Champions League qualification is hanging in the balance – Spurs lie three points off fourth-placed Aston Villa with a game in hand, one month of Premier League action remaining – Ange Postecoglou will likely have held some form of internal discussion to map out an initial transfer strategy.
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou
Having been one of the busiest clubs in the market since the Australian was selected to lead the revival, Tottenham have improved and the fresh faces have made their presence known, but the canyon that the division's top three sit at the other side may well be narrowed with the right moves in several months.
Daniel Levy is worth his salt and with the streamlined strategy suggestive of success, the club's latest top target might be the one to go for.
Spurs' search for a forward
According to Football Insider, Tottenham have registered a 'concrete' interest in Bayern Munich star Serge Gnabry, with the recently-usurped Bundesliga champions open to selling the former Arsenal product.
Gnabry, aged 28, has long been a central figure in a team of trophy specialists but has been afflicted with injuries this season and might welcome the chance for a new chapter.
Bayern Munich's Serge Gnabry
His contract isn't up until 2026 but there is a good chance that, if Tottenham can present an exciting package, the versatile forward would be willing to listen to an offer.
Serge Gnabry's season in numbers
Bayern signed Gnabry from divisional rivals Werder Bremen after activating his €8m (£7m) release clause, two years on from his departure from Arsenal, having made 18 appearances for the Gunners, scoring once and supplying two assists.
His move to Bayern has been a stunning success, winning every trophy on offer over six years of service and, in total, scoring 86 goals and supplying 52 assists across 235 fixtures.

The £310k-per-week winger might have endured an injury-riddled campaign but he has still demonstrated respectable levels in the final third and boasts five goals and one assist from just eight starting appearances in all competitions.
Of course, his overall Bayern record highlights his prowess – only last year, the Germany international posted 17 goals and 12 assists in all competitions.
In the Bundesliga last season, as per Sofascore, Gnabry clinched 19 goal contributions from just 22 starts, completing 82% of his passes, creating 11 big chances and averaging 1.1 key passes per game.
Serge Gnabry and Eric Dier.
While he's been unfortunate on the injury front this season, Bayern are clearly in need of a reshuffle after losing out in the Bundesliga title race for the first time in a decade, and Gnabry could be one of the long-time servants shown the exit as the soon-to-return Julian Nagelsmann gets to work and competes against a new superpower in Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen.
Having been hailed for his "world-class" quality by pundit Rio Ferdinand in the past, Tottenham would only be too happy to relieve Die Roten of his signature…
How Serge Gnabry could fit in at Spurs
Brennan Johnson and Timo Werner are express options down the flanks and have found success this season through their speed and directness, while Dejan Kulusevski operates on the other end of the spectrum and focuses on technical quality and ball retention, albeit guilty of slowing proceedings down, thus benched for the past three league matches.
Principally playing from the right, Gnabry could prove to be a massive upgrade on Kulusevski, offering a far more reliable goal threat and offering a level of creativity that ensures he's not serving as a one-dimensional outlet.
Gnabry would offer the closest thing to a complete collection of these aforementioned Lilywhites, having been described as "lightning quick" and "tailor-made for big transition moments" with a "clinical finish with both feet" by former Werder Bremen boss Alexander Nouri.
While he's found a position of lesser importance in Bayern's first-team this season, Gnabry has retained his potency in front of goal and currently ranks among the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 12% for total shots and pass completion, the top 10% for tackles and the top 16% for blocks per 90, as per FBref.
Bayern Munich forward Serge Gnabry.
What does this tell us? Well, arriving at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Gnabry would likely provide a steady goal threat – possibly the sharpest from any of the current wide options, barring Son – with Kulusevski, by contrast, ranking in just the bottom 42% for goals per 90, as well as the bottom 27% for shots, the top 35% for pass completion, the top 10% for tackles and the bottom 36% for blocks.
He's scoring at an incredible rate despite only ranking in the top 12% for shots taken, meaning that he is excellent at snatching his chances. Moreover, the German is crisp in possession and boasts some impressive defensive metrics; Bayern are not known for their defensive work but are still organised and strong in preventive sequences, and Gnabry seeks to contribute in this regard.
For Postecoglou, whose system is steeping hard-working movements, fluidity and sharp-edged attacking intent, this is a player who would only thrive, and presented with a proposal promising an influential role, he might just be tempted, especially if promised Kulusevski's place as the regular starter on the right.
While some might think that a return to the rigours of the Premier League could weaken Gnabry's constitution, he has hardly struggled to perform against English opposition, bagging against the Gunners in the Champions League this season and, as Spurs supporters will acutely recall, decimating Mauricio Pochettino's side and plundering four goals in a 7-2 demolition in north London back in 2019.
£20m Spurs man could be the latest to prove Ange wrong after Dier revival
Ange Postecoglou’s side could surely make good use of this talented defender’s skill set.
ByAngus Sinclair Apr 19, 2024
Gnabry is still only 28 and has honed his qualities over many illustrious years in Bavaria – just maybe, Tottenham might offer a package that convinces him to try his hand in England once again, taking Postecoglou's project to the next level.

Toney linked with Brentford exit
Form nosedives as interest drops
Bees slash striker's asking price
WHAT HAPPENED?
According to The Sun, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United were previously keeping tabs on the 28-year-old but now they have made it clear they have no plans to bid for the Brentford forward. In January, the Bees valued him at upwards of £80m ($104m) but now will reportedly accept a bid worth £30m ($39m) or so less than that this summer.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Toney scored four goals in his first five Premier League games following the conclusion of his ban for betting breaches. However, he failed to score in any of his last 12 matches for Thomas Frank's men as he went from being one of the most in-demand strikers to one the Bees may not be able to shift.
DID YOU KNOW?
Toney was banned for eight months in May 2023 after admitting to 232 breaches of FA betting rules. The England international was given a reduced ban because of a diagnosed gambling addiction, before returning to action in January.

Toney, whose contract at Brentford runs until 2025, is now off on his summer holidays after playing his part in England's run to the Euro 2024 final last weekend. It remains to be seen if he will still be a Bees player for the resumption of the 2024-25 season.

Leeds United have a chance to move into the automatic promotion places in the Championship as they face Rotherham at Elland Road on Saturday.
The Whites are currently one point behind Southampton, in second, and will move above the Saints if they drop any points in their clash with Huddersfield at the same time.
Daniel Farke and his side are fighting for promotion to the Premier League at the first time of asking but turned their attention away from the league in midweek to beat Plymouth Argyle 4-1 in the FA Cup.
They needed extra time to overcome their fellow Championship competitors and the German head coach may now make some changes to the starting XI from that match to keep players fresh and bring a few of his key men back in.
With this in mind, here is FFC's predicted Leeds line-up, with five changes, to take on Rotherham in this all-Yorkshire clash on Saturday…
1 Illan Meslier
Illan Meslier
Starting off between the sticks, Illan Meslier should keep his place in goal as he has been the manager's first choice throughout the season so far.
He has started the club's last two FA Cup matches and 28 Championship matches for the Whites, which suggests that the French colossus will start this weekend.
2 Archie Gray
Archie Gray for Leeds United.
At right-back, Archie Gray could return in place of Sam Byram as the 17-year-old has been a regular starter, out of his natural position, in the league this season.
The academy graduate has started 26 Championship games so far this term and could keep January signing Connor Roberts out of the side until the Burnley loanee is fully settled in.

3 Joe Rodon
Leeds defender Joe Rodon.
Joe Rodon could keep his place at the heart of the defence after yet another impressive showing in 120 minutes against Plymouth last time out.
FFC picked him out as the real star of the show, despite his side scoring four goals in the end, due to his sublime defensive performance at the back.
4 Ethan Ampadu
Ethan Ampadu was rested for the 4-1 win over Plymouth and could return once again to play at the heart of the defence alongside his international teammate.
The summer signing from Chelsea has played at centre-back, with Pascal Struijk missing through injury, in five of his last six appearances for the club. In those five matches, Leeds have won five and conceded one goal.
That impressive run of results, and defensive record, with Ampadu and Rodon as a centre-back partnership could convince Farke to stick with them for now, which would result in Liam Cooper dropping out of the team.
5 Junior Firpo
Leeds United defender Junior Firpo.
Another player who should keep his place in the starting XI is Junior Firpo at left-back as the former Barcelona man offers natural width down that side.
As a left-footed player, the experienced ace does not need to come inside onto his right foot, as is the case with Sam Byram, and has racked up four assists in ten league matches so far this season.
6 Ilia Gruev
Leeds midfielder Ilia Gruev.
In midfield, Ilia Gruev should start once again as the Bulgaria international is currently enjoying an impressive run of form in the starting XI for Leeds.
The summer signing from Werder Bremen has not missed a single minute of action for the club over the last seven matches in all competitions, which shows that he has the faith of the manager at the moment.
7 Glen Kamara
joe-rodon-glen-kamara-leeds-opinion
Alongside Gruev, Glen Kamara should start again in the middle of the park. He completed 94% of his attempted passes and assisted Wilfried Gnonto's opening goal with a sharp pass in the win over Plymouth.
The Finland international has started 20 league matches for the Whites so far this term and completed 93% of his passes, to go along with a duel success rate of 61%.
8 Wilfried Gnonto
Leeds United forward Wilfried Gnonto.
Gnonto is another player who could retain his position in the starting XI as the Italy international has caught the eye in the last two matches.
In the absence of Dan James, the former Inter prospect has scored in successive games for the first time this season, with composed, clinical, finishes against both Bristol City and Plymouth.
9 Georginio Rutter
Leeds forward Georginio Rutter.
Joel Piroe could be ditched from the starting XI to make way for the mercurial Georginio Rutter, who made a big difference off the bench at Home Park on Tuesday.

As you can see in the table above, the former Hoffenheim starlet made a far greater impact on the pitch than the former Swansea marksman with his quality as a scorer and a creator in the number ten role.
Therefore, Farke must unleash the 21-year-old dynamo, who was once described as "powerful" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, and hope that he can add to his tally of five goals and nine assists in the Championship so far this season.
10 Crysencio Summerville
Crysencio Summerville.
Crysencio Summerville should be unleashed from the start on the left flank after his match-winning contributions off the bench in midweek in the FA Cup.
The Dutch winger was injected into the game to be a difference-maker on the night and that is exactly what he was with one goal and one assist in extra time.
He produced a fine finish to make it 2-1 before laying the ball off for Rutter to make it 3-1, which all but won the tie for the Whites against Ian Foster's side.

Arsenal strolled to a comfortable 5-0 victory over Burnley in the Premier League this afternoon, and it looks as though they are up for a title challenge.
Mikel Arteta’s side have rebounded well since losing to Liverpool in the FA Cup last month, securing five successive wins while scoring 21 times in those games.
With the Anfield side and Manchester City also in contention, taking home three points today was all that mattered, but the performance would also have pleased Arteta.
Several players excelled, with Bukayo Saka getting on the scoresheet once again.
Bukayo Saka was excellent against Burnley
The right-winger had scored in his previous three league matches prior to this one, and he didn’t look like he was going to be stopped by a poor Burnley defence.
Saka was in devastating form out wide, scoring another brace for the Gunners, while also succeeding with a dribble attempt and taking 49 touches during the clash.
He was subbed off for Reiss Nelson once the three points had been wrapped up, but his performance set the tone, and he will be vital over the coming months, especially if Arteta wants to end Arsenal’s two-decade wait for a league crown.
While Saka was immense, it was Martin Odegaard who really stole the show and the player has been in sublime form recently, culminating in this excellent display against Vincent Kompany’s men.
Martin Odegaard’s performance vs Burnley in numbers
It did not take long for the Norwegian to make his mark in the game, opening the scoring after just four minutes and this early marker set the club on their way to a crucial three points.
Throughout the 90 minutes, Odegaard managed 88 touches while displaying his attacking qualities by making three key passes, having two shots on target, succeeding with 100% of his dribble attempts and chipping in with an assist for good measure.
It is no wonder his display was deemed “absolutely outrageous” by Yankee Gunner on X following an impressive first half, and it proves that when the side has both Saka and Odegaard firing at the same time, they can rack up the goals.
Indeed, Odegaard was even given a match rating of 9/10 by GOAL for his display against Burnley as he was dubbed ‘absolutely outstanding’ and if he can maintain this momentum, the Gunners could certainly be contenders for the league.
The former Real Madrid starlet did lose possession 16 times, yet this was due to his constant advances into the final third.
He did win four of his seven contested duels throughout the tie, showing strength in the one on one battles, and it proves his defensive qualities can also be of use to the side.
The Gunners now trail league leaders Liverpool by just five points, but they have a game in hand and if they can claim all three points from that tie, then the Anfield side and City will have to be wary of Arteta’s men closing in.
With Odegaard and Saka in this type of form, anything is possible.
