Branthwaite has won rave reviews for his performances this season, with Sky Sports pundit Sue Smith calling him a "class act", former Everton man Michael Ball hailing him as "absolutely fantastic" and team-mate James Tarkowski claiming he's "got everything to go the very top". United will hope that he can take that leap at Old Trafford, and they're very much on the right track.

Three times in the last four years, Aston Villa have broken their transfer record. First, when Dean Smith was manager, they shelled out £33m to sign Ollie Watkins from his former club Brentford and then, 12 months later, they agreed to pay £38m to land Emi Buendia from Norwich.

Could they eclipse it again this year? Well, on the one hand, they could potentially have some Champions League money on the way, even if they end up losing out to Spurs in the race for the Premier League top four. As part of the new competition format, the two-best performing nations in this year's tournaments will be entitled to an extra spot, and England is only a fraction behind second-place Germany in the current standings.

On the other hand, though, there's a sense that Villa may have to sell a first-team player before the end of June in order to comply with the league's Profit and Sustainability Rules. Those circumstances may not be especially conducive to a historic outlay.

Villa now set sights on Paqueta

Undeterred, NSWE are now eyeing up a deal for Lucas Paqueta, according to West Ham outlet Claret and Hugh. The Brazilian would like to move to reigning champions Manchester City, but Villa have joined Arsenal, Spurs and Manchester United in making it clear that they will try to sign him if that deal doesn't materialise. Significantly, the 26-year-old's contract includes an £80m release clause.

Paqueta is currently under investigation for alleged breaches of betting rules, which he denies, and is apparently considering legal action against the FA if he doesn't receive a verdict by April. Any move, of course, will hinge upon whether he avoids a ban.

Signing Paqueta could be a huge statement, and not just because of the record-shattering transfer fee. Villa and West Ham are two clubs of a similar status, each playing in European competition and trying to pierce the big-six bubble, so it may say a great deal about the former's trajectory if they can poach a player from the latter.

Dubbed a "magician" by former Premier League midfielder Robbie Mustoe, Paqueta can play as a left winger, number 10 and number eight. He's capable of playing the final ball – he ranks second in the West Ham squad (among those with at least 1,000 minutes played) for expected assists per 90 (0.17) and key passes per 90 (1.55) – but he can also launch dangerous attacks from deeper positions too. Nobody in the Irons ranks averages more progressive passes or passes into the final third than Paqueta (6.9 and 4.76).

USA Cricket selected ACE as its strategic partner to conclude a multi-stage evaluation process that began in November 2018.   Ten Hag has handed first team debuts to a number of United's academy players, most recently 18-year-old forward Ethan Wheatley. But his biggest success stories are Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho. He gave both players their debuts last season but they have really kicked on this campaign. Mainoo, who made his first Premier League start in November against Everton, has become a regular for United as well as being called into the England squad. Garnacho, meanwhile, is an Argentina international and has scored nine goals this season.

The Saints aren't done there when it comes to arrivals, however. According to The Secret Scout, Southampton have completed the signing of Cameron Frederick from EFL side Reading. The U16 gem, who can play as both a centre-back and defensive midfielder, reportedly arrived to complete a move as early as last night. The Secret Scout posted the news on X, saying:

Although Frederick is unlikely to play an instant part in Martin's team, he is certainly one for the future and perhaps a player who can eventually provide the Saints with a major boost if they reach the Premier League in the near future.

Frederick is one for the future

It speaks volumes about just how much potential Frederick has that Southampton have already made their move. Still so young, he may well end up getting better and better with more experience too. The Saints, of course, have a rich history of success stories from their academy, whether that be James Ward-Prowse, Theo Walcott or most famously Gareth Bale. Now, they will hope to pick up where Reading left off and oversee Frederick's development into a top player.

The teenager joins at the right time, given Southampton's position as promotion-challengers. Currently, just three points behind an Ipswich side beginning to falter for the first time under Kieran McKenna in the Championship, those at St Mary's have it all to play for. And from Frederick's perspective, if he dreams of one day playing Premier League football, then now appears to be a good time to join Martin's side.

With just a couple of weeks left in the January transfer window and Southampton already busy throughout, they could be a side to watch when it comes to further incomings in the Championship.

Arsenal chief Edu is said to be a "big fan" of one £100 million Brazilian, and the north Londoners are now "set to push" for his signing next year.

The Gunners are flying on the field, winning four out of their last five Premier League games and sailing through to the last 16 of the Champions League. After spending over £200m in the summer on new signings, some of Edu and manager Mikel Arteta's business has paid dividends.

Club-record acquisition Declan Rice has been a revelation since joining from West Ham for £105 million, while goalkeeper David Raya's loan deal is to be made permanent at Arsenal (Fabrizio Romano).

However, the striking and midfield area could prove a problem if left unresolved. Arteta's got just Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Jesus to pick from going forward, which has lead to Arsenal becoming favourites to sign Brentford striker Ivan Toney.

Partey's reoccurring injury problems this season, coupled with his trip away for AFCON at the start of next year, is also motivating interest in the likes of Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz.

The Brazilian has starred under Unai Emery this season, scoring five goals and assisting two others in 16 top flight matches as a key mainstay.

A January deal may be very difficult to pull off, but that isn't to say Arsenal won't make an attempt at some point in 2024.

Edu set to push for 2024 Luiz signing

According to Football Insider and journalist Pete O'Rourke, Edu is a "big fan" of Luiz and "set to push" for his signing at Arsenal.

However, this won't be until later in the year, as Arsenal may be operating on a somewhat more limited January budget due to their lavish summer spending.

Luiz is said to be valued at around £100 million, meaning a winter move looks pretty off the cards, but Arsenal can be more gung-ho in the summer window and go all out for the ex-Man City man.

Fresh funds will be made available later on in 2024, and Edu will have significantly more to invest in marquee signings. There could well be space at that point, even if Arsenal sign another midfielder in January, as the likes of Jorginho and Mohamed Elneny are out of contract in June.

Club legend Ian Wright, commenting on Luiz's ability earlier this year, expressed his real admiration for the 25-year-old.

Moyes heading for 2024 exit

Since re-joining the Hammers in late 2019, head coach David Moyes has done an absolutely fantastic job of guiding West Ham through their most successful period for a long, long time.

The east Londoners won their first piece of silverware since 1980, and first European trophy since the 60s, with a Conference League triumph in Prague last season. This came after Moyes lead West Ham to consecutive European qualification campaigns, and they're in a strong position to seal a Europa League knockout round place this season.

These scenarios were scarcely imagine when Moyes first joined, but that being said, West Ham's league form hasn't been brilliant over the last 12 months. They were battling relegation for much of 2022/2023, and reports suggest Moyes could leave West Ham in 2024 when his current contract expires.

West Ham identifying Moyes replacements

As relayed by 90min journalist Toby Cudworth on the Talking Transfers podcast earlier this month, West Ham are identifying future replacements for Moyes and doing their due-diligence.

“Our understanding is that West Ham have been looking at future replacements for him," said Cudworth (via West Ham Zone).

"He won the Conference League in June, has one year left on his contract, but there’s been no engagement over a new contract. Our understanding is that West Ham are in no hurry to replace him despite the indifferent Premier League results. David Sullivan doesn’t really see an available candidate who offers substantially more than David Moyes.

“One thing we can say with near-certainty, David Moyes is not going to be signing an extension at West Ham barring a miracle.”

It would appear that the Scotsman is likely to leave next year, with talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook sharing a possible candidate to succeed him.

West Ham really like Steve Cooper

According to Crook, who wrote an X update on Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper and his future at the City Ground, West Ham have a watchful eye over him. Indeed, West Ham are apparently real admirers of Cooper, with the 43-year-old under fresh pressure amid a poor recent run of form for Forest.

The Welshman guided his side to promotion from the Championship in 2022, with Forest later maintaining their top flight status by the skin of their teeth. Former West Ham boss Allardyce, commenting on Cooper earlier this year, heaped praise on the tactician for his "incredible" job dealing with certain issues at Forest.

You want to keep them all involved and use them if you can and see what they’ve got, but ultimately, it’s a very tough decision. Steve has done an incredible job dealing with these issues as well as getting good results.”

Manchester United’s hopes of signing Antonio Silva hinge on one key factor, according to an update from Old Trafford insiders.

There have been plenty of problems for Erik ten Hag to contend with this season, whether it be a lack of quality from his new signings, or key players struggling for form, such as Casemiro and Marcus Rashford.

Injuries have also been cruel to United, though, and their defence has been struck down with constant fitness issues, with the likes of Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane and Aaron Wan-Bissaka among those who have missed big chunks of action for the Red Devils.

With the January transfer window edging closer, it looks as though Ten Hag could look to bring in a new centre-back, even though the form of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof has been improved of late in the absence of the influential Martinez.

A host of defensive names have been linked with moves to Old Trafford, with Sporting CP's sought-after youngster Goncalo Inacio a player who continues to be tipped to join United. Meanwhile, Benfica's Silva is another highly-rated prospect who is seen as a target for the Red Devils.

It would be a surprise if no defensive reinforcements came in next month, considering how failure to address the situation could hamper their top-four hopes in the Premier League, and a key update has now emerged over United's pursuit of one individual.
