Big Jarrad Branthwaite transfer update as Man Utd move ahead of Real Madrid

Erik ten Hag and Manchester United could bid farewell to a raft of centre-backs at the end of this season. Jonny Evans' one-year deal is set to expire, while the club have elected not to exercise their option to extend Raphael Varane's contract by a further 12 months.

Manchester United's Lisandro Martinez.

Elsewhere, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof have both been put up for sale, with United ready to do business if they receive suitable offers. Of course, multiple departures would necessitate new arrivals, and one target the Red Devils have looked at is Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite.

United have reportedly taken note of Branthwaite's performances this season, but they face competition from Spanish giants Real Madrid, who are also showing interest in the 21-year-old centre-half.

United move ahead of competition in Branthwaite chase

According to Football Insider, Man Utd are now "lead the race" to sign Branthwaite from Everton. "Several" Premier League sides plan to make an approach this summer, but it's the 20-time English champions who have moved into pole position.

United have stepped up their interest since adding Branthwaite to their shortlist, with Erik ten Hag and his recruitment team earmarking him as a long-term target. Right now, it looks like they have a good chance of getting their man, but there's still plenty of work to do.

"Class act" Branthwaite can reach the top at United

Branthwaite joined Everton from Carlisle in 2020 and, after loan spells at Blackburn in the Championship and PSV in the Netherlands, he's finally been integrated into the Toffees' first-team this season. Sean Dyche left him on the bench for the first two Premier League matches, but since the start of September, he's been one of the first names on the teamsheet, starting every single game for which he's been available across all competitions.

The table below shows Branthwaite's well-rounded contribution in the heart of defence, but the standout figure should be the percent of dribblers tackled. That shows us that the Englishman is almost always successful when putting a foot in to halt an advancing attacker, a reflection of his elite judgement and timing.

Branthwaite has won rave reviews for his performances this season, with Sky Sports pundit Sue Smith calling him a "class act", former Everton man Michael Ball hailing him as "absolutely fantastic" and team-mate James Tarkowski claiming he's "got everything to go the very top". United will hope that he can take that leap at Old Trafford, and they're very much on the right track.

Lucas Paqueta update as Aston Villa clear on transfer bid for West Ham star

Three times in the last four years, Aston Villa have broken their transfer record. First, when Dean Smith was manager, they shelled out £33m to sign Ollie Watkins from his former club Brentford and then, 12 months later, they agreed to pay £38m to land Emi Buendia from Norwich.

Last summer, under Unai Emery, NSWE blew both of those transfers out of the water by parting with up to £52m to recruit Moussa Diaby from Bayer Leverkusen, having previously signed Leon Bailey from the same side.

Could they eclipse it again this year? Well, on the one hand, they could potentially have some Champions League money on the way, even if they end up losing out to Spurs in the race for the Premier League top four. As part of the new competition format, the two-best performing nations in this year's tournaments will be entitled to an extra spot, and England is only a fraction behind second-place Germany in the current standings.

On the other hand, though, there's a sense that Villa may have to sell a first-team player before the end of June in order to comply with the league's Profit and Sustainability Rules. Those circumstances may not be especially conducive to a historic outlay.

Villa now set sights on Paqueta

Undeterred, NSWE are now eyeing up a deal for Lucas Paqueta, according to West Ham outlet Claret and Hugh. The Brazilian would like to move to reigning champions Manchester City, but Villa have joined Arsenal, Spurs and Manchester United in making it clear that they will try to sign him if that deal doesn't materialise. Significantly, the 26-year-old's contract includes an £80m release clause.

Lucas Paqueta for West Ham.

Paqueta is currently under investigation for alleged breaches of betting rules, which he denies, and is apparently considering legal action against the FA if he doesn't receive a verdict by April. Any move, of course, will hinge upon whether he avoids a ban.

"Magician" Paqueta combines the ugly and the beautiful

Signing Paqueta could be a huge statement, and not just because of the record-shattering transfer fee. Villa and West Ham are two clubs of a similar status, each playing in European competition and trying to pierce the big-six bubble, so it may say a great deal about the former's trajectory if they can poach a player from the latter.

Dubbed a "magician" by former Premier League midfielder Robbie Mustoe, Paqueta can play as a left winger, number 10 and number eight. He's capable of playing the final ball – he ranks second in the West Ham squad (among those with at least 1,000 minutes played) for expected assists per 90 (0.17) and key passes per 90 (1.55) – but he can also launch dangerous attacks from deeper positions too. Nobody in the Irons ranks averages more progressive passes or passes into the final third than Paqueta (6.9 and 4.76).

Aston Villa eyeing Tielemans repeat to land "gifted athlete" for Emery

Two other Premier League clubs are also in the running.

ByDavid Comerford Feb 16, 2024

With a penchant for dazzling tricks, the former Lyon man also places second for successful take-ons with 29, only behind Mohammed Kudus (60). However, he embraces the dirty side of the game too, having won the fourth-most tackles (53) and made the seventh-most fouls (50) in the division. That, clearly, is a midfield combination that appeals a great deal to Emery, but Villa could face some mighty competition for this particular transfer.

USA Cricket receives $1 billion boost to develop T20 league

USA Cricket has received a boost of over $1 billion investment from American Cricket Enterprises (ACE) for the development of a domestic T20 league. USA Cricket selected ACE as its strategic partner to conclude a multi-stage evaluation process that began in November 2018. The launch of the league is slated for 2021.The billion-dollar deal is one of the biggest for the development of domestic cricket in the US. ACE is backed by Sameer Mehta and Vijay Srinivasan, the founders of Willow TV (the largest cricket broadcaster in North America), and Satyan Gajwani and Vineet Jain, of the Times of India group. USA Cricket had started the process by publicly inviting proposals for a US-based T20 league. They chose ACE whose proposal combined a large financial commitment to invest into the league, key deals for infrastructure and broadcast distribution, experienced and knowledgeable leadership, and a data-driven, analytical business strategy, which affirmed their ability to build a longstanding institution that will elevate US cricket.”USA Cricket is excited to partner with ACE to launch a professional cricket league in the United States. We were thoroughly impressed by their comprehensive proposal,” Paraag Marathe, USA Cricket board chairman said. “Vijay, Sameer, Satyan and Vineet provided a vision for the growth of cricket in the US on all levels, and we’re confident they will create a world class T20 league here in America. This is a watershed moment for cricket in the United States and we look forward to a long-lasting, successful partnership.”ACE has commenced major infrastructure investment towards international grade cricket venues in several US metropolitan markets. ACE is also working to develop additional turf cricket pitches and auxiliary facilities in more than a dozen locations. Based on a major/minor professional league model, the new facilities will provide, for the first time in the US, the ability to stage and support major domestic and international cricket at all levels. In addition, ACE will provide support for USA Cricket’s men’s and women’s national teams to ensure they can capitalise on their recent successes at the ICC World Cricket League Division 2 and the ICC Women’s Americas Qualifier, respectively. The league is expected to feature top international players from the USA team and around the world, combined with a focus on pathways to develop a homegrown player pool for USA Cricket and the league. A major component of ACE’s plans is the developmental academies around the country that will be aligned to the league teams and will help foster and develop talent at the youth levels to ensure a strong pipeline of cricket players.”Cricket has the second-largest audience in the world, and yet has little presence in the largest professional sports market,” Gajwani said. “We want to develop a lasting institution that brings to the US the excitement and passion of cricket, enjoyed by billions of people globally. True grassroots development of any sport takes decades and we are excited and committed to play a role in developing world-class cricket in America.A key highlight of ACE’s proposal is distribution, sponsorship and exposure for the professional league and for USA Cricket’s national teams via major TV and digital broadcast platforms, led by Willow TV which has over 4 million subscribers. In addition to the Willow assets, ACE and USA Cricket will seek out “free to air” platforms as well to ensure mainstream audiences are exposed to the league.

Erik ten Hag reveals 'forgotten' achievement of Man Utd tenure as sacking draws closer after 'horrible season'

Erik ten Hag has defended his record as Manchester United manager as he edges closer to being sacked.

  • Manager set to be sacked after FA Cup final
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Dutchman is on the brink of being sacked after presiding over the club's worst finish in the Premier League era and it is expected that the FA Cup final against Manchester City will be his final game in charge. But he feels he has done a good job in his two years at Old Trafford, especially when it comes to improving individual players.

  • WHAT TEN HAG SAID

"This club is in a transition period and we have progressed many players to high levels. Some young players also came into the team and became internationals and will go to the Copa America and the Euros, which is very good," Ten Hag told a press conference. "We want to improve the squad, we want to create a team for the future, but in the meantime we want to win trophies. On Saturday, we have a big opportunity to win another trophy and a third final in two years, I would say, is not too bad."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ten Hag has handed first team debuts to a number of United's academy players, most recently 18-year-old forward Ethan Wheatley. But his biggest success stories are Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho. He gave both players their debuts last season but they have really kicked on this campaign. Mainoo, who made his first Premier League start in November against Everton, has become a regular for United as well as being called into the England squad. Garnacho, meanwhile, is an Argentina international and has scored nine goals this season.

Ten Hag admitted his side will be motivated by a desire for revenge for last year's defeat to City in the FA Cup final. It is also an opportunity to qualify for the Europa League, having missed out on continental football after finishing eighth in the Premier League. "We will be in a very different place if we win on Saturday because we will be in Europe and we will have another trophy. But still, three finals in two seasons is very good, I would say, because this club when I entered it was not in a good state, absolutely not," he said. "I think we improved a lot and even when you consider all the injuries we’ve had, it’s a horrible season for us."

Southampton seal signing of youngster who “can play CB or DM” from EFL side

Southampton didn't waste any time before welcoming their first signing in the January transfer window, with Joe Rothwell arriving from Bournemouth on loan. And now they've reportedly sealed their second winter addition.

Southampton transfer news

Russell Martin added to his midfield ranks with the arrival of Rothwell and will hope that the Bournemouth midfielder helps the Saints in the race to leapfrog Ipswich Town to automatic promotion in the Championship. Praising his new teammate and fellow loanee, Flynn Downes said:

“He looks very good. He has trained with us and he looks sharp. I think you need to bring in new faces in January. It gives you a little boost. He is a good player. Last year he played a lot in the Premier League and did well. “Everyone knows he has got that class. If you watch any of the games he has played in, you can just tell he is a good player. We are looking forward to having him involved. Our midfield is so good because everyone brings something different to the table."

The Saints aren't done there when it comes to arrivals, however. According to The Secret Scout, Southampton have completed the signing of Cameron Frederick from EFL side Reading. The U16 gem, who can play as both a centre-back and defensive midfielder, reportedly arrived to complete a move as early as last night. The Secret Scout posted the news on X, saying:

Although Frederick is unlikely to play an instant part in Martin's team, he is certainly one for the future and perhaps a player who can eventually provide the Saints with a major boost if they reach the Premier League in the near future.

Frederick is one for the future

It speaks volumes about just how much potential Frederick has that Southampton have already made their move. Still so young, he may well end up getting better and better with more experience too. The Saints, of course, have a rich history of success stories from their academy, whether that be James Ward-Prowse, Theo Walcott or most famously Gareth Bale. Now, they will hope to pick up where Reading left off and oversee Frederick's development into a top player.

Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse.

The teenager joins at the right time, given Southampton's position as promotion-challengers. Currently, just three points behind an Ipswich side beginning to falter for the first time under Kieran McKenna in the Championship, those at St Mary's have it all to play for. And from Frederick's perspective, if he dreams of one day playing Premier League football, then now appears to be a good time to join Martin's side.

With just a couple of weeks left in the January transfer window and Southampton already busy throughout, they could be a side to watch when it comes to further incomings in the Championship.

Edu verdict on Douglas Luiz revealed as Arsenal ready 2024 move

Arsenal chief Edu is said to be a "big fan" of one £100 million Brazilian, and the north Londoners are now "set to push" for his signing next year.

Edu's transfer plans for 2024

2024 is fast approaching, with transfer rumours now becoming more and more prevalent ahead of January. According to recent reports, Arsenal are very keen on bringing in a new central midfielder to replace Thomas Partey and a proven goalscorer who can provide that extra bit of cutting edge.

Arteta wants Edu to sign "underrated" international who wants Arsenal move

He’s apparently keen to join.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 20, 2023

The Gunners are flying on the field, winning four out of their last five Premier League games and sailing through to the last 16 of the Champions League. After spending over £200m in the summer on new signings, some of Edu and manager Mikel Arteta's business has paid dividends.

Club-record acquisition Declan Rice has been a revelation since joining from West Ham for £105 million, while goalkeeper David Raya's loan deal is to be made permanent at Arsenal (Fabrizio Romano).

However, the striking and midfield area could prove a problem if left unresolved. Arteta's got just Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Jesus to pick from going forward, which has lead to Arsenal becoming favourites to sign Brentford striker Ivan Toney.

Partey's reoccurring injury problems this season, coupled with his trip away for AFCON at the start of next year, is also motivating interest in the likes of Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz.

joao-palhinha-douglas-luiz-liverpool-opinion

The Brazilian has starred under Unai Emery this season, scoring five goals and assisting two others in 16 top flight matches as a key mainstay.

A January deal may be very difficult to pull off, but that isn't to say Arsenal won't make an attempt at some point in 2024.

Edu set to push for 2024 Luiz signing

According to Football Insider and journalist Pete O'Rourke, Edu is a "big fan" of Luiz and "set to push" for his signing at Arsenal.

However, this won't be until later in the year, as Arsenal may be operating on a somewhat more limited January budget due to their lavish summer spending.

Douglas Luiz celebrates for Aston Villa

Luiz is said to be valued at around £100 million, meaning a winter move looks pretty off the cards, but Arsenal can be more gung-ho in the summer window and go all out for the ex-Man City man.

Fresh funds will be made available later on in 2024, and Edu will have significantly more to invest in marquee signings. There could well be space at that point, even if Arsenal sign another midfielder in January, as the likes of Jorginho and Mohamed Elneny are out of contract in June.

Club legend Ian Wright, commenting on Luiz's ability earlier this year, expressed his real admiration for the 25-year-old.

"He [Luiz] is ready to be one of the best midfield players in the Premier League. He is so underrated," said Wright.

"They [Villa] blasted us (on Sunday). We had no chance. It was men against boys."

West Ham love 43 y/o manager target who Allardyce called "incredible"

West Ham are apparently big fans of a new manager target who their former boss, Sam Allardyce, has hailed as "incredible".

Moyes heading for 2024 exit

Since re-joining the Hammers in late 2019, head coach David Moyes has done an absolutely fantastic job of guiding West Ham through their most successful period for a long, long time.

The east Londoners won their first piece of silverware since 1980, and first European trophy since the 60s, with a Conference League triumph in Prague last season. This came after Moyes lead West Ham to consecutive European qualification campaigns, and they're in a strong position to seal a Europa League knockout round place this season.

west-ham-david-moyes

These scenarios were scarcely imagine when Moyes first joined, but that being said, West Ham's league form hasn't been brilliant over the last 12 months. They were battling relegation for much of 2022/2023, and reports suggest Moyes could leave West Ham in 2024 when his current contract expires.

West Ham identifying Moyes replacements

As relayed by 90min journalist Toby Cudworth on the Talking Transfers podcast earlier this month, West Ham are identifying future replacements for Moyes and doing their due-diligence.

“Our understanding is that West Ham have been looking at future replacements for him," said Cudworth (via West Ham Zone).

"He won the Conference League in June, has one year left on his contract, but there’s been no engagement over a new contract. Our understanding is that West Ham are in no hurry to replace him despite the indifferent Premier League results. David Sullivan doesn’t really see an available candidate who offers substantially more than David Moyes.

West Ham United manager David Moyes.

“One thing we can say with near-certainty, David Moyes is not going to be signing an extension at West Ham barring a miracle.”

It would appear that the Scotsman is likely to leave next year, with talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook sharing a possible candidate to succeed him.

West Ham really like Steve Cooper

According to Crook, who wrote an X update on Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper and his future at the City Ground, West Ham have a watchful eye over him. Indeed, West Ham are apparently real admirers of Cooper, with the 43-year-old under fresh pressure amid a poor recent run of form for Forest.

The Welshman guided his side to promotion from the Championship in 2022, with Forest later maintaining their top flight status by the skin of their teeth. Former West Ham boss Allardyce, commenting on Cooper earlier this year, heaped praise on the tactician for his "incredible" job dealing with certain issues at Forest.

Steve Cooper – fact file (via Transfermarkt)

Average term as coach: 2.08 years

Preferred formation: 3-4-2-1

Points per game: 1.71

"What becomes difficult in terms of building team spirit is having too many players. Most managers don’t have enough. What they don’t have enough of is quality, and what they don’t want is quantity," said Allardyce on the No Tippy Tappy Football Podcast (via Forest News).

“Steve is one of the only managers to say he has too many players. Dealing with that can distract your focus. You want to keep them all involved and use them if you can and see what they’ve got, but ultimately, it’s a very tough decision. Steve has done an incredible job dealing with these issues as well as getting good results.”

What are insiders saying about Man Utd’s transfer links to Antonio Silva?

Manchester United’s hopes of signing Antonio Silva hinge on one key factor, according to an update from Old Trafford insiders.

Man Utd eyeing new centre-backs

There have been plenty of problems for Erik ten Hag to contend with this season, whether it be a lack of quality from his new signings, or key players struggling for form, such as Casemiro and Marcus Rashford.

Injuries have also been cruel to United, though, and their defence has been struck down with constant fitness issues, with the likes of Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane and Aaron Wan-Bissaka among those who have missed big chunks of action for the Red Devils.

With the January transfer window edging closer, it looks as though Ten Hag could look to bring in a new centre-back, even though the form of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof has been improved of late in the absence of the influential Martinez.

A host of defensive names have been linked with moves to Old Trafford, with Sporting CP's sought-after youngster Goncalo Inacio a player who continues to be tipped to join United. Meanwhile, Benfica's Silva is another highly-rated prospect who is seen as a target for the Red Devils.

It would be a surprise if no defensive reinforcements came in next month, considering how failure to address the situation could hamper their top-four hopes in the Premier League, and a key update has now emerged over United's pursuit of one individual.

Antonio Silva to Man Utd update

According to a new report from TEAMtalk, Manchester United's chances of signing Antonio Silva are likely to be determined by who they manage to sell in the near future, with their insiders providing an update this week.

Antonio Silva for Benfica.

"A Manchester United deal for Antonio Silva could hinge on the departure of several key players over the next year. Manchester United‘s interest in pursuing Benfica defender Antonio Silva is clear but insiders believe the value of such a deal is going to raise complications. United are desperate to reinforce their back line in 2024 as they seek to find a solution to defensive problems that continue to haunt them.

"But Silva’s arrival could be dependant on who departs – and there is also a feeling that United might end up needing more than one new centre-half over the course of next year."

Silva really does look like a footballer of enormous potential, so he is someone who United should be willing to break the bank to sign in January, immediately improving both their current squad depth and long-term prospects in the process.

Man Utd make contact to sign "insane" new forward

He’s been in fine form.

ByCharlie Smith Dec 2, 2023

While still only 20 years of age, Red Devils transfer target Silva has already made 62 appearances for Benfica, scoring six goals in that time, and former Tottenham centre-back Jan Vertonghen has tipped him to become "a legend" eventually, further highlighting his ceiling.

Maguire and Lindelof aren't the long-term solutions at United, and Varane is now 30 years of age and injury-prone, so Silva could be viewed as Martinez's first-choice defensive partner at Old Trafford for years to come.

Ben McDermott run out again as South Africa warm-up with victory

South Africa’s batsmen tuned up for Saturday’s T20I against Australia with a blistering display of hitting to beat the Cricket Australia XI in the warm-up game at Allan Border Field in Brisbane.Aiden Markram (45 runs off 26 balls), Heinrich Klaasen (41 from 23), Reeza Hendricks (39 from 38) and Farhaan Behardien (27 not out from 14) struck 14 fours and nine sixes between them to post a imposing total of 5 for 201 against an attack that featured Australia T20 squad members Jason Behrendorff and Andrew Tye.Behrendorff took 1 for 25 in three overs including the wicket of Quinton de Kock, who was caught at mid-off, but Tye was hammered for 55 runs from his four overs and did not pick up a wicket.CA XI’s chase got off to a bad start losing two wickets in the Powerplay including Ben McDermott. He was unfortunately run out again, this time backing up too far after a powerful straight drive from Max Bryant was deflected onto the stumps by Lungi Ngidi, following the T20 series against Pakistan were he was run out in all three innings.Bryant clubbed 36 from 22 balls before holing out to long on from the bowling of Imran Tahir. Alex Ross made 40 off 35 but he too fell to spin with Tabraiz Shamsi getting his first wicket of the tour. Chris Morris finished with 2 for 35 after not playing at all during the one-day series.
