Leeds: Bielsa signing has now seen his value soar 653% in one year

Leeds United may be faltering with regard to their position in the Championship table, but it must be said that Daniel Farke's side has not played considerably poorly despite winning just once.

The Whites are a side firmly in transition, still reeling from their relegation last season and seeking to find some stability following a summer of vast change.

Having overseen the departure of 15 players, with nine entering Elland Road, their German manager has admittedly done well to ease the burden felt by all those senior exits and maintain the strength of the squad. He just needs to settle on a system now with which to input these stars and allow them to flex their quality on the division.

Especially given most have performed at a level way beyond their current one, with stars such as Glen Kamara, Ethan Ampadu, Joe Rodon and more having come from sides that were featuring in the respective top flight of the nation they resided in.

Despite the influx of quality, any success they enjoy in their current campaign is likely to be built on the solid foundation of those who remain from last term, with one man arguably the standout.

Who is Leeds’ best performer this season?

Given the fine performances that are yet to merit the results they will feel they deserve, it is hard to pinpoint a sole standout from Farke's squad.

The aforementioned Wales international has taken to life at Elland Road with ease, orchestrating matches from midfield, whilst Pascal Struijk has brushed himself off after a tough season last year to recapture his solidity.

Leeds boss Daniel Farke

However, arguably the biggest success story thus far has been Crysencio Summerville, who amongst all the unrest surrounding their other wingers, has remained loyal and steadfast to the club.

Despite Wilfried Gnonto handing in a transfer request, and Luis Sinisterra engineering a late exit, the Dutchman hasn't kicked up any fuss to our knowledge, merely going about his business as a key cog in their front line. As such, he has been rewarded with a 7.95 average rating in the league, the highest within the squad.

This is a figure buoyed by his one goal and one assist in two appearances, alongside his 3.5 key passes and four ball recoveries per game, via Sofascore. A tireless worker who retains his creativity, it could be argued that dropping down a division will do the speedster wonders in furthering his already flourishing game.

After all, he was lauded last season for the brief purple patch he enjoyed, as Statman Dave outlined his "electric form". All four of his league goals last term came within a four-game period, helping suggest that with consistency Summerville could thrive on the biggest stage.

Teammate Patrick Bamford even noted: "Sometimes it is too easy for him, I know it sounds silly but he is a really good player. We see it in training all the time, I think the next step for him is showing it in the first team when he gets the chance on a Saturday.”

It seems that his increased stature at the club has helped add that vital reliability to his game, as he continues to go from strength to strength.

How much was Crysencio Summerville worth at Feyenoord?

However, the 21-year-old livewire is far from a Thorp Arch creation, given he was signed by Marcelo Bielsa back in 2020.

That's not to suggest that he was not highly rated though, with Feyenoord clearly understanding the calibre of player they would be losing as they sanctioned his exit, but were powerless to the pull of the Premier League.

Transfermarkt still were seemingly unconvinced though, with his final valuation before leaving standing at a lowly €1.5m (£1m). Admittedly, this had risen from €350k (£300k) during his time with the Dutch outfit and would rise further upon completing his move.

How much did Leeds United sign Crysencio Summerville for?

It seems that Bielsa and Victor Orta were aware of just how much he was worth, considering they only had to spend £1.3m to bring Summerville in as a teenager.

This came during a summer of shrewd investment for the future, as they also secured deals for Joe Gelhardt and Cody Drameh.

However, the young Dutch ace marked the standout signing, fighting off the interest of several clubs to land him.

What is Crysencio Summerville’s market value now?

Given his lack of exposure to first-team football under Bielsa, his value did not see a sharp upturn purely by moving to a bigger club. It was clear he would have to fight for such recognition.

However, his chances were thought to be limited as the Whites tumbled into a relegation battle, seeking to keep the youth separate from the physically and mentally challenging environment that such a situation brings.

Crysencio Summerville.

Despite that, it became clear that he had to be thrown in, with his valuation having since skyrocketed. In fact, over a 12-month period from June 2022 to June 2023, his value has shot from just €2m (£1.7m) to €15m (£12.8m), marking a 653% increase, as per Transfermarkt.

The expectation is that should he now play a big role in their eventual promotion, that figure is set to soar to even greater heights.

Why is he worth that much?

All of the aforementioned figures help to emphasise why his value has seen such a sharp rise, but the words of Bielsa helped lay the foundation for this success.

Journalist Adam Pope reported: "Bielsa says winger Crysencio Summerville is 'one of the youngsters who has evolved the most. It’s what generates optimism'."

marcelo-bielsa-leeds-united

To see him continue to grow should come as no surprise, as it was decreed by the legendary tactician, who now plies his trade with the Uruguay national team.

With 43 senior appearances for the Yorkshire club under his belt at such a tender age, the experience Summerville boasts will also have a big impact on that aforementioned figure, as his performances are outstanding for someone still so young.

How much does Crysencio Summerville earn?

Despite obviously being one of the best players at the club, his current deal hardly reflects that, as he sits on a £15k-per-week wage that is due to expire in three years.

georginio-rutter

This makes him far from one of the top earners, with ten of his teammates having been handed more lucrative deals. For comparison, the top earner is Georginio Rutter, who takes home an alleged healthy £70k-per-week.

However, should his form continue, it is expected that this will be rectified with speed to avoid other clubs sniffing around.

Leeds: Farke Could Sign "Aggressive" £10k-p/w Djed Spence Partner

Leeds United seem to be unrelenting in their late transfer flurry, with Daniel Farke having clearly left all his business late as he seeks to add numerous new faces to his side…

Who could Leeds United sign this summer?

One such name that seems to be closing in on a switch is Djed Spence, who has seen his touted Elland Road switch accelerated throughout yesterday's whirlwind of reports.

Having been given the famous "here we go" by transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, fans can once again get excited at the prospect of seeing a dynamic defender explode down that right flank, contributing to attacks but retaining the youthful energy to defend too.

What could make their new signing even better is if they could emulate that success on the opposite side, with reports suggesting they may well do as they are seeking to loan Luke Thomas from Championship rivals Leicester City.

Read the latest Leeds transfer news HERE…

With just one year left on his £10k-per-week deal at the King Power, a temporary switch to Yorkshire could act as an audition for the club, who could snag his services on a free transfer next summer should he impress.

How good is Luke Thomas?

Whilst not quite as well-versed at their current level as Spence, the 22-year-old would still represent an equally exciting option down the left to add a similar injection of youthful exuberance.

With 85 first-team appearances to his name, having broken into the Foxes senior squad under Brendan Rodgers, it was not easy for the young left-back to stake a starting claim given he battled with Timothy Castagne, James Justin and even Ricardo Pereira at times.

So, to boast that many showings is admirable alone, not to mention how admirable he performed at times; particularly during the 2021/22 season, where he maintained a solid 6.75 average rating in the league. This was a figure upheld by his consistently combative displays, with his defensive prowess sure to offer a fine counter-balance for Spence's all-action style.

Thomas also recorded 1.8 interceptions, 2.3 tackles and 2.1 clearances per game during that term, as if to emphasise this, via Sofascore.

Such form understandably drew praise from many, with his former boss leading the plaudits:

"It's his first game playing against a really good team, he's got great awareness. I thought over the course of the game he did so well. He defends, so aggressive and tenacious and he can pass the ball which is important for someone who plays me for me."

This was further supplemented by teammate Johnny Evans: "I thought he was outstanding," Evans said. "Everything he did was immaculate. He was man of the match for me."

luke-thomas

For Farke to place him in his side, it would allow perfect balance to be earned should his compatriot recapture his form from the 2021/22 season, whilst on loan at Nottingham Forest.

The 23-year-old was imperative in their eventual promotion success, recording six goal contributions alongside one key pass and 1.4 tackles per game, via Sofascore.

His attacking exploits were actually highlighted by former Forest ace Brian Laws, who was effusive in his praise:

"He has been the standout player in the Forest side and we are talking about a full-back. Full-backs do not tend to get many headlines. He grabs them by the handful. In every single game, he has a positive impact.

"He has power going forward, he has electric pace, he has an abundance of skill, he can drop his shoulder, step-over, go inside or outside — he is a major threat."

It seems that, whilst they are a couple of young English defenders, their outlook on the game could not be more different. However, for Farke, this could prove to be a match made in heaven to finally add some energy and competence to those full-back spots.

Test match set to resume after uneven-bounce deliberations

The umpires took the players off 19 minutes before scheduled stumps on day three because of concerns over their safety, but after a meeting between the match referee and the two captains, it has been decided to resume play as scheduled on day four

Sidharth Monga and Firdose Moonda in Johannesburg26-Jan-2018The Wanderers Test will continue as scheduled on day four. There was uncertainty over the future of the match when umpires took the players off 19 minutes before scheduled stumps on day three because of concerns over their safety on a spicy pitch. The pitch has had exaggerated bounce and seam right from the start of the match, but on day three various batsmen copped blows to their bodies against balls kicking up off a good length. The ball that finally prompted the umpires to halt play was one from Jasprit Bumrah that hit Dean Elgar in the grille of the helmet. The two captains then met the match referee. India made it clear they wanted to continue playing, and South Africa didn’t express a preference either way but said they would continue playing if the match referee deemed the pitch safe to play on.The match officials first had a conversation regarding the pitch with the teams during the tea break on day three, when it was expressed to the two managers that the new ball could behave dangerously. The decision to take players off was the umpires’. The match referee was then briefed, and he consulted both the captains. The protocol is to continue only if both the captains agree to play on. If the decision is not to play, then it is seen if the pitch can be repaired without – in the view of the match referee – disadvantaging any side. There will be no repairs on this pitch except for the customary light roller at the start of the day’s play. A light roller was used on the pitch on day three too.The ICC later sent out a statement via Twitter, confirming an on-time start on day four:”The on-field umpires, in consultation with the match referee, and after speaking with both the captains and groundsmen, have decided that the Johannesburg Test will resume on time on Saturday. The on-field umpires will continue to monitor the pitch, and consult the match referee should the pitch deteriorate further. The welfare of the players is paramount and two of the most experienced match officials are in charge of the game and will take appropriate decisions.”Play on Friday was suspended shortly before scheduled close because the on-field umpires wanted to consult the match referee regarding the condition of the pitch.”

Ben Stokes withdrawn from England's ODI squad

Though the ECB had picked the allrounder in the squad, the board had said the selection was dependent on the conclusion of the police investigation into the incident outside a club in Bristol

ESPNcricinfo staff31-Dec-2017Allrounder Ben Stokes has been withdrawn from England’s ODI squad for the series in Australia, and batsman Dawid Malan was named his replacement.Stokes is still waiting to hear if he will be charged by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) for his role in an incident outside a club in Bristol, and although England had picked him in their ODI squad in the first week of December, the ECB said his selection was dependent on the outcome of the police investigation.”Ben Stokes will not travel with the group of players leaving the UK on 2 January, pending CPS advice on the incident in Bristol in September,” the ECB said. “Should ECB receive formal confirmation that he has either, a) been charged or, b) will face no charges, the ECB Board would convene within 48 hours to make a decision on his availability to represent England at that stage.”The incident – which also involved England batsman Alex Hales, who was not charged by police and therefore cleared for ODI selection – cost Stokes his place in the side for the last two ODIs against West Indies at the end of the English summer, and the ongoing Ashes in Australia. There has been no update on whether Stokes will be charged or not since.Stokes was arrested in September on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm then released on bail. Avon and Somerset police completed their investigation into the incident in November and passed a file on to the CPS for advice on whether he should be charged. The police also confirmed that a 27-year-old man suffered a fractured eye socket in the incident, which occurred outside the Mbargo nightclub in the Clifton area of Bristol in the early hours of the morning after England’s one-day international against West Indies on September 25.Stokes returned to competitive action by playing for Canterbury in the domestic one-day and T20 competitions in New Zealand in December, for which he was granted a no-objection certificate by the ECB.His involvement, or otherwise, with England has overshadowed much of the winter. Having been initially named in the Ashes squad a few days after his arrest, footage was released by a newspaper appearing to show Stokes throwing a series of punches at a man in the street. England subsequently said he would not be considered for selection until investigations were complete. Both Stokes and Hales will have to face an ECB disciplinary hearing, whether or not the police press charges. The ECB’s chief executive, Tom Harrison, recently suggested it could take six months to a year to resolve the situation if Stokes is charged, although he added that the board would not prevent him from playing in competitions such as the IPL in the meantime, while he is out of the England set-up.Without Stokes, England have faced difficulty balancing their Test side and relinquished the Ashes after falling 3-0 behind in Perth – although they did end their run of defeats in Australia by having the better of a drawn Boxing Day Test.Malan has been one of England’s better-performing players during the Ashes, making his maiden Test hundred at the WACA. He has yet to be capped in 50-over cricket but impressed on T20 debut during the summer, when he was Man of the Match against South Africa. His call-up in place of Stokes is expected to be confirmed in the next 24 hours. The ODI series begins in Melbourne on January 14, after which England and Australia will play a T20I tri-series involving New Zealand. England will then embark on their tour of New Zealand, taking in another five ODIs and two Tests.

Ryan ten Doeschate set for Netherlands return

Cricket Netherlands have confirmed Ryan ten Doeschate’s return to the national set up ahead of the side’s final two matches of the ICC World Cricket League against Namibia in Dubai on December 6 and 8.Netherlands, the current table toppers, are seeking to become the 13th ODI side that will compete in the ICC ODI Championship that is set to begin in 2020. Netherlands will also be taking part in the 2019 World Cup qualifiers in Zimbabwe in March.Ten Doeschate last represented Netherlands at the 2011 World Cup, where he became one of only three players to make two centuries in a single edition. Since then, he’s been a regular feature – and currently the captain – for Essex in England’s domestic tournaments, apart from featuring in franchise T20 tournaments in India, Zimbabwe, Australia and New Zealand and Pakistan.”Getting a player of Ryan’s talent and experience is a massive gain for us,” Ryan Campbell, Netherlands’ head coach and former Australia and Hong Kong wicketkeeper, said. “What he brings to the squad is more than just runs, wickets and brilliant fielding. He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge in big matches.”As captain of Essex, he has just led them to the Division One Championship. Our youngsters will gain knowledge that you just can’t buy off a shelf. We are on the brink of something special but we will need cool, calm heads to see us through, I have no doubt Ryan will bring that.”Meanwhile, Netherlands won’t have the services of Michael Rippon. The 26-year old South Africa-born allrounder, who was part of the WCL squad that played Kenya in October, hasn’t secured a release from his New Zealand provincial side Otago.

"Massive" Disagreement’s Over Transfer Policy At West Ham

West Ham United manager David Moyes and Technical director Tim Steidten have a "massive difference of opinion" on which striker should replace Gianluca Scamacca this summer, with the former favouring Divock Origi and the latter Elye Wahi, per transfer insider Graeme Baily.

Are West Ham United signing a striker this summer?

The Hammers have had something of an underwhelming transfer window so far this summer. After selling their talismanic club captain Declan Rice to Arsenal for £105m, there was an expectation that they would start to splash the cash to replace his output – so far, this hasn't happened.

It's not all doom and gloom, however, as the side does look set to complete the £35m signing of Mexico international and Ajax star Edson Alvarez in the coming days, a player that is sure to improve their depleted midfield substantially for the coming season.

That said, the sale of Italian striker Scamacca to Serie A side Atalanta means that the East Londoners are going to need to sign another forward option before the window slams shut on September 1st, but there is a significant "difference of opinion" on who the club should target as their new number nine, per Graeme Bailey.

Read the latest West Ham United transfer news HERE…

He explained the situation on the Talking Transfers podcast, saying:

Gianluca Scamacca

"We've seen Scamacca go, but there's a massive difference of opinion between which striker should come in. Elye Wahi is the option for Tim Steidten from Montpellier, who most West Ham fans would love to come in. One of the best young strikers in Europe.

"But our understanding is that David Moyes quite likes Divok Origi, the former Liverpool striker at AC Milan and that just sums up the two camps perfectly."

Which striker should West Ham sign?

There is no doubt that with Scamacca on his way out of the club, the Irons need to make sure that they sign at least one forward before September, regardless of which one they pick to avoid being perilously under equipped in that area, but which one of the two would be the better option?

Well, when it comes to comparing their performances last year, there is really no competition at all. The Montpellier man had an outstanding campaign for the Ligue 1 outfit, and in his 33 league appearances, he scored 19 goals, provided five assists and maintained an average match rating of 6.87, per WhoScored.

On the other hand, the Belgian managed to score just two goals, provided one assist and averaged a somewhat underwhelming match rating of 6.32 across his 27 Serie A appearances, also per WhoScored.

Divock-Origi-AC-Milan

Comparing the pair directly using FBref only makes it more apparent that Wahi is the superior striker, with the "powerful" youngster creating 0.44 expected goals per 90 compared to the former Liverpool man's paltry 0.18.

One area the £84,000-a-week man beats out the French under-21s star is in shots per 90, registering 2.54 to his 2.22. However, even that is misleading as it's the 19-year-old who registers more shots on target at 1.29 per 90 to the 28-year-old's 1.05.

Ultimately, if it comes to picking one of these two strikers to lead the line for West Ham for the foreseeable future, it would be a seriously poor decision to opt for Origi, regardless of the big games he has helped the Reds win over the years.

West Ham Interested In £50m "Monster", Imagine Him & Alvarez

West Ham United have seemingly made bringing in a central midfielder or two their top priority in the remainder of the transfer window after sanctioning Declan Rice's £100m-plus move to Arsenal.

The Europa Conference League winners have been slow off the mark so far in terms of incoming activity, but David Moyes looks set to replenish his squad in the coming weeks.

Who could replace Declan Rice?

It is no coincidence that West Ham have been linked with a number of central midfielders over the past month or so, including the likes of Joao Palhinha, James Ward-Prowse and Denis Zakaria.

United have made an approach for Ajax ace Edson Alvarez, according to The Athletic, while The Independent reports that the east London side are now ready to step up their interest in Manchester United's Scott McTominay.

West Ham have plenty of money to spend following Rice's exit – although that will not necessarily be a good thing when it comes to negotiating with other clubs – but it will take a fee in the region of £50m to prise McTominay away from Old Trafford.

What kind of player is Scott McTominay?

McTominay has spent six seasons as a first-team regular for Man United and featured 39 times in all competitions last season, albeit starting just 16 of those matches.

The Scotland international's stock has fallen somewhat, with last season the first time since 2019-20 he made fewer than 30 appearances in the Premier League.

However, McTominay still showed what he is capable of when called upon, especially in terms of the defensive aspects of the game. The 26-year-old averaged 3.12 clearances per 90 and won 2.84 aerials per 90, as per FBref, which ranks him among the top 1% and 2% of all midfielders across Europe's top five leagues respectively.

The 6 foot 4 brute also added goals to his game in the second half of the season, scoring six times in his final 11 outings for club and country, though all but one of those goals came for Scotland.

The Lancaster native was given more of a licence to get forward by Scotland boss Steve Clarke, which may also be the case under his compatriot, Moyes at the London Stadium.

Should the Irons also get a deal over the line for Alvarez, it could provide United with a dream central-midfield partnership. Alvarez himself thrives in the defensive side of the game, but he is also capable of keeping things ticking over.

Indeed, the Mexico international ranked ninth in the whole of Eredivisie last season for passes completed per 90 (74.5) and fifth for pass-completion percentage (88.7).

Assuming Moyes sticks with the 4-2-3-1 formation favoured throughout last season, Alvarez and McTominay could sit in front of the back four, with the latter given a little more freedom to carry the ball forward.

For while McTominay's stock has fallen over the past season or so, it was less than three years ago he was being described as a "physical monster" by then-United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Should West Ham follow up their initial interest in McTominay, they will have the opportunity to unleash the 'monster' in what could be an exciting new-look midfield this coming season.

Aston Villa Could Replace Bailey With ‘Incredible’ £40m Move

Aston Villa are reportedly eyeing Leeds United starlet Wilfried Gnonto, as Unai Emery looks to bolster his side this summer.

The Spaniard has already added midfield and defensive cover this transfer window, securing the signature of Youri Tielemans with Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres closing in on a move.

President of football operations Monchi could deliver a masterclass this summer, should he strike a deal for the Leeds forward in addition to the already arriving stars.

What’s the latest on Wilfried Gnonto to Aston Villa?

Earlier this week, Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla claimed that Villa are one of the clubs pondering over Gnonto, who ‘will leave’ Leeds this summer as per the report.

News reported today by Football Insider added that the Villans have ‘registered their interest’ in the 19-year-old, with Everton also eyeing the teen.

Back in April, transfer expert Pete O’Rourke claimed that the Whites would require a fee in the region of £40m to allow the Italian to depart, a figure that could change following confirmation of the side’s relegation.

What could Wilfried Gnonto offer to Aston Villa?

Hailed as “incredible” by members of the media, Gnonto lit up the Premier League in his first season in England, showing glimpses of just how explosive his talents on the flank are.

Signed from FC Zurich last summer, Leeds bagged themselves a dangerous young player, and one that caught the eye of many during his short time in the English top tier.

Despite only making 14 starts for the Whites, with an average of 56 minutes per game, via Sofascore, the Italian highlighted the player he could be if equipped with in a strong attacking side that could nurture his talents.

In 24 total Premier League appearances, the 19-year-old contributed to six goals, scoring two and assisting four in a treacherous campaign for all at Elland Road.

Deployed on the left flank, the attacker showed his ability in the final third, not just through his fine level of finishing but his creative attributes too, averaging one key pass per game.

Leeds’ relegation marked the end of their three-year stay in the Premier League, and sparked rumours of it being the end of the road for a host of their squad, who aren’t seduced by Championship football.

The Whites’ relegation could come as a positive thing for Villa, who could bolster their attack by obtaining Gnonto, who would surely prove to be an upgrade for Emery’s current options on the flank.

Leon Bailey has been a hot and cold performer for the Villans, seeing him branded as “inconsistent” by club legend Gabriel Agbonlahor, who insisted via Football Insider that the winger “could be sold” if his performances don’t improve.

The 25-year-old has netted just five goals in 51 Premier League appearances in claret and blue, and could find himself swept under the rug during Emery’s revamp of the side.

While the Jamaican outscored the Villa target this season, scoring four in 33 appearances, the Leeds starlet proved to be a better outlet to those around him, despite playing in a lesser side in his first taste of English football.

As per FBref, Gnonto averaged 4.39 progressive carries to Bailey’s 3.89 per 90 last season, as well as receiving more progressive passes than the 25-year-old, averaging 9.04 received per 90 to his 8.33.

The numbers suggest that Emery could equip his side with a hungry young talent that could fare better than Bailey, who has failed to consistently ‘wow’ Villa Park since his arrival.
