Ex drops Jesse Lingard to West Ham update

Via his Patreon account, reliable club insider ExWHUemployee has just dropped an exciting West Ham transfer update involving Jesse Lingard.

The Lowdown: West Ham eye Lingard…

The Manchester United midfielder has been a target for David Moyes since before the beginning of this summer transfer window and Claret & Hugh believe that the 28-year-old has been among the Irons; main transfer priorities along with a striker and a centre-back.

However, a recent claim by Sky Sports indicated that a move for Lingard was looking increasingly unlikely, with the player in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans.

Matheus Pereira was also taken off the table as an alternative target after his move to Saudi Arabian giants Al Hilal.

The Latest: ExWHUemployee drops exciting Lingard update…

As per ExWHUemployee, there is now some real hope for the Hammers after all when it comes to signing Lingard on from the Red Devils before August 31.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-gossip/” title=”West Ham latest gossip…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It appears that the 28-year-old has pulled a U-turn on his West Ham stance and is ‘a lot more open’ to a London Stadium return. The player’s entourage are also said to be ‘making these feelings known’ to Manchester United, with Lingard’s future having not been assured.

West Ham are also expected to launch a bid for the attacker over these coming days and there is ‘renewed optimism’ that a deal could actually happen.

The Verdict: Very much needed…

It has been an arduous and at times painful summer for West Ham supporters given their lack of transfer business so far. Just over two weeks of the transfer window remain until the deadline and Moyes has still yet to see a major new outfield signing come through the door.

West Ham have only snapped up goalkeeper Alphonse Areola on a season-long loan deal from Paris-Saint Germain, so this update on Lingard should come as an exciting one for the Hammers faithful.

It provides fresh hope that Moyes could land one of his major targets after all and there could be many Irons supporters hoping that the ‘sensational’ player, as described by Nigel Winterburn (The Sun), finally signs on the dotted line.

'Forced' retirement talk only in the media – Kumble

Anil Kumble has rubbished reports that the seniors in the side are being forced into retirements by the BCCI and the selectors

Anil Kumble has rubbished reports that seniors in the side are being forced into retirement by the BCCI and the selectors. “We have never discussed that among ourselves. All the talk is only in the media,” Kumble said. “Age doesn’t matter at all [if a player is doing well], otherwise I would have retired long ago.”Kumble also couldn’t see why there should be debate over Sourav Ganguly’s selection for the first two Tests. “He was a part of the last Test series as well. I don’t see a change,” he said. There had been media speculation before the selection that the team management didn’t want Ganguly in the side. “Reports can say a lot of things,” Kumble said. “I can’t divulge what happened in the selection meeting, but I don’t see any change: he was a part of the last Test team, he is a part of this series as well.”The performance of the seniors, including Ganguly and Kumble, has been a recent talking point, especially after the Sri Lanka Tests where they were below par. Ganguly managed only 96 runs in six innings and Kumble eight wickets at an average of 50.00 during India’s 2-1 series defeat this summer.”It is only the media scrutiny,” Kumble said. “The board and the selectors have never scrutinised unreasonably. In terms of the players’ performance, we have performed exceptionally well, except for that one bad series in Sri Lanka.”If you go by the record, I don’t think the senior players have ever performed badly. The reason we got those results in Australia was thanks to the batsmen scoring those runs. It’s never been a problem. It’s just that, leading up to the series, you [media] have a lot of time to speculate. As far as I am concerned I think we have the quality to go out there and get the runs as batsmen and get the wickets as bowlers. I think we have the quality to do well.”Kumble felt the seniors weren’t under undue pressure because of the increased scrutiny. “We have been playing for 18 years, if we couldn’t handle that pressure we wouldn’t have played so long,” he said. “The pressure is always there, we can handle that. It’s just that it needs to be a bit more respectful. When people discuss cricket, when people discuss players, it needs to be handled respectfully. If that is done, we don’t mind the scrutiny. If it’s done rubbishly, and the way it’s being portrayed, it hurts. If it’s respectful it doesn’t matter; everybody is scrutinised.”He was in a brighter mood, though, when discussing India’s chances in the forthcoming series against Australia. “This is the best possible chance we have of winning the series. We have prepared exceptionally well. So we’re looking forward to that.”It’s just that, leading up to the series, you [the media] have a lot of time to speculate. As far as I am concerned I think we have the quality to go out there and get the runs as batsmen and get the wickets as bowlers””It’s more or less the same side we played in Australia. We will certainly try to use the home advantage. We have come pretty close in the last couple of series against them, so this is a really good opportunity.”Talking of the previous series, Kumble will want to carry forward the quality of cricket and forget the acrimony. “That [controversies] was a part of the last series and everyone is now looking forward to this series. The cricket played in Australia – most people don’t remember – was excellent. I am sure it will be good, competitive cricket whenever India play Australia. We are really looking forward to the challenge,” at the end of the fourth day of the pre-series camp at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. It was a day of optional net practice for India, and one could see that they had let the intensity taper off, which was their original plan. Virender Sehwag took the day off, while Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh only batted. The other absentees were RP Singh, who has gone to Chennai for India A’s match against New Zealand A, and Mohammad Kaif, who hasn’t been picked for the first two Tests.

Sohail calls for action against Ashraf

Aamer Sohail, former Pakistan opener and captain, has demanded that president Pervez Musharraf, the board’s patron, remove Nasim Ashraf

Unhappy with the functioning of PCB chairman Nasim Ashraf, Aamer Sohail, former Pakistan opener and captain, has demanded that Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf, the board’s patron, remove the incumbent.”PCB’s new chairman should be a good combination of cricket and administrative knowledge, which are essential to run the affairs of the game,” Sohail told the Karachi-based . “The responsibility also lies with the president, who as patron appointed Dr Nasim Ashraf as the PCB chairman. The whole nation is burning with curiosity as to what action he takes against the man’s reckless decisions about Shoaib Akhtar and Saleem Altaf, director cricket operations for World Cup 2011, particularly after the courts gave a decision in the two cases against the board.”Altaf had been sacked by the PCB, but was reinstated by the Lahore High Court – a decision upheld by the Supreme Court – pending the resolution on the writ filed by his lawyers. In April, a disciplinary committee had banned Shoaib for five years from playing for or in Pakistan. The ban was reduced to 18 months and a fine of Rs 7 million by a board-appointed appellate tribunal. Shoaib then filed a writ petition in the Lahore High Court, which suspended the fast bowler’s 18-month ban till a final judgment.Sohail had recently told Cricinfo that Musharraf should be more proactive in convincing international teams to tour Pakistan. “The onus is on the president to convince countries that it is safe to play in Pakistan and that sport has never been targeted here,” he said. “The ICC and PCB are going the whole hog in ensuring it happens here but the president can really help with his involvement.”Sohail said the PCB patron should select the chairman through an advisory board comprising former Test cricketers and experts after advertising for applicants.

Gayle slams middle-order 'disaster'

Chris Gayle, the West Indies captain, says the middle-order batsmen need to seriously lift their game after a batting display he described as “a disaster”

Chris Gayle, the West Indies captain, says the middle-order batsmen need to seriously lift their game after a batting display he described as “a disaster”. West Indies failed to bat out their overs having been sent in and their total of 223 was never likely to be enough to beat a well-oiled Australia on a good batting pitch. It was even more disappointing after Gayle and Xavier Marshall provided a solid platform, compiling an 86-run opening stand that started with a cautious mindset before both men launched some powerful strikes. West Indies have struggled with the bat in all three ODIs so far and Gayle’s 53 was their first half-century of the series.Marshall, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Andre Fletcher all made starts only to throw away their wickets with rash shots and it left the captain in a sour mood. “I thought myself and Xavier really started well this morning,” Gayle said after the game. “Basically the wicket was doing a bit earlier but the middle order was a disaster for us again. They set it up really well and didn’t actually carry on.”Although Gayle was one of the offenders in the first two matches he could not be blamed for his dismissal on this occasion, run out at the non-striker’s end after Marshall’s straight drive clipped the fingers of the bowler Mitchell Johnson. His entertaining innings was the only bright point on a day when his batsmen made bad choices and the bowlers and fielders lacked spark, handing Australia the series with two matches still to play.”We’ve done a lot of talks but that was never really going to help us at this particular time,” Gayle said. “We need more action to be taken, so it’s up to us as individuals to actually work out our game. We can’t really continue like this, it doesn’t look good. Our outfield cricket doesn’t look good as well, so we really need to pull our socks up.”Gayle said West Indies still had a lot of pride to play for in the remaining games, which take place in St Kitts next Friday and Sunday. Several players who failed to impress in the first three outings will be waiting nervously to see if they are in the squad for the final two matches, which should be announced in the next couple of days.

Celtic: Noel Whelan drops brutal Ange Postecoglou prediction

Noel Whelan believes that new Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou could be gone before the turn of the year, saying that handing him a 12-month contract signifies that the Parkhead hierarchy do not fully trust the 55-year-old.

The Lowdown: Celtic building towards 2021/22

Moving into 2021/22, Celtic fans will be delighted to have finally received some much-needed managerial clarity after going more than 100 days without a permanent head coach before appointing Ange Postecoglou.

Rebuilding the squad has began in earnest, with the Hoops being linked with moves for Ko Ikatura and George Baldock.

The Latest: Whelan believes Postecoglou could be gone by the turn of 2021

However, BBC pundit Whelan has taken a rather dim view of the former Yokohama F. Marinos manager’s prospects at Celtic in a recent interview with Football Insider, stating:

“If he does not hit the ground running he is going to come in for it, simple. That is what happens when you take over at a club like Celtic.

“The fact that the club only gave him a rolling one-year contract speaks volumes. They are not clearly convinced either. If Postecoglou had the full backing of the board he would have been given a three-year contract.

“He has got a lot of work to do to convince the players and to convince the fans.

“If there is a sizeable gap between themselves and Rangers at Christmas time you could see the club start looking for a replacement. It would not surprise me.”

The Verdict: Whelan’s comments are harsh

The former Aberdeen forward rightly points out the expectation levels and immense pressure to succeed at an enormous club like Celtic, but his scathing criticism of Postecoglou, and in particular his contract situation, is a tad harsh.

This is standard practice at Parkhead – they operate with almost every manager on an initial 12-month rolling contract basis; recent examples include Brendan Rodgers, Neil Lennon and Ronny Deila.

Three-year deals may provide extended continuity in football, but they don’t necessarily guarantee success. Only time will tell with regards to whether Whelan is proved right or wrong about Postecoglou, but the manager at least deserves to have some chance to prove himself rather than being judged before a competitive ball is kicked in his Celtic tenure.

In other news, Celtic are considering a move for this Manchester City defender.

Liverpool are linked to Dusan Vlahovic

Liverpool have been linked with a move for Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic as the summer transfer window approaches.

What’s the story?

According to an exclusive report by Inside Futbol, the Anfield outfit have held talks with the representatives of the 21-year-old and have also made contact with the Serie A outfit over signing the highly-rated youngster.

Vlahovic caught the eye with a string of impressive performances throughout 2020/21, bagging 21 goals in 37 league appearances for La Viola.

Next Firmino

Liverpool struggled to live up to their usual high standards last season, finishing in a disappointing third place in the Premier League table as they let their top-flight crown slip without much of a fight.

While injuries to their first-choice centre-backs severely hampered Jurgen Klopp’s men, so did the poor form of several of his forwards.

Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino were particularly underwhelming, with the usually prolific pair contributing to a combined total of just 20 league goals, 14 fewer than the tally they managed two years previously.

As the Anfield outfit look to rebuild their side and mount another title charge, adding another attacking force appears to be high up on Klopp’s wish list.

The likes of Patson Daka and Raphinha have been linked with a move to Merseyside in recent weeks, and now another name has been thrown into the mix in the shape of Vlahovic.

Forza Italian Football editor Conor Clancy has previously heaped praise on the Serbia international following his extraordinary form for Fiorentina.

“He’s really incredible, and it really caught me by surprise because I’d seen him play in the flesh a few times, and he scored a great goal against Inter, and there was a lot of hype in Florence about him. People were saying this guy’s the real deal, and I just couldn’t see it,” said Clancy in an interview with This is Futbol.

“He’s just a complete number nine, and I know it’s just off the back of one season, but he’s strong, can link play up, can hold the ball up, and most importantly, he’s scoring goals. He’s one of those players that when he looks confident, you almost expect him to score every time he plays.”

A move for the 6 ft 2 hitman would appear to be a logical move for director of football Michael Edwards then, and he could seal Firmino’s natural replacement by securing Vlahovic’s signature this summer, with the Brazilian looking like he is now past the peak of his career.

And, in other news…Klopp must brutally axe £60k-p/w Liverpool starlet this summer, he’s not good enough
