Newcastle interested in Christian Eriksen

Newcastle United are showing interest in former Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen, according to The Times (via The Chronicle).

The lowdown

The 29-year-old hasn’t played since he suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s Euro 2020 opener against Finland last June.

In December, Inter Milan terminated his contract by mutual consent, in the knowledge that Eriksen would not be able to play in Serie A because he has an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator fitted. However, he can feature in another league where the rules are different.

The midfielder racked up 226 Premier League appearances during his seven-year stint at Spurs from 2013 to 2020.

The latest

According to The Times, Newcastle are said to be among three Premier League clubs keen on signing Eriksen, alongside Brentford and Leicester City.

Brentford’s interest is the most advanced, with the Bees offering the Dane a contract until the end of the season. Therefore, Newcastle may quickly have to present a rival offer to ensure that they don’t lose out.

The verdict

Eriksen was excellent for Spurs, recording 159 direct goal contributions (69 goals, 90 assists) in his 305 appearances.

His overall career tallies stand at an impressive 114 goals and 158 assists, and his individual accolades include a PFA Team of the Year nod, the Premier League Goal of the Month for April 2018 and a FIFPro World XI nomination. Newcastle fans may also remember that he netted a direct free-kick against them in a 3-1 win for Spurs in 2015.

Given that he hasn’t played in so long and is coming back from such a serious medical episode, this would have to be have regarded as a risky move. On the other hand, he would be arriving on a free transfer and, if Newcastle match Brentford’s proposal, on a short-term contract.

Perhaps it’s worth a go.

Everton missing 11 players vs Burnley

Many Everton fans have been left fuming as some early team news has emerged ahead of their game away at Burnley in the Premier League on Boxing Day.

Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match at Turf Moor, Rafa Benitez has now revealed that as many as 11 players are currently out for his team, with six injured and a further five who have tested positive for Covid-19.

Considering that they had a depleted squad in their last game in their 1-1 draw away at Chelsea, in where they could not fill the bench and had to field some youngsters, including starting debutant Ellis Simms (BBC), this is yet another kick in the teeth for the Goodison Park faithful, who may not fancy their chances against the Clarets with so many squad players still unavailable.

Nonetheless, the fixture still goes ahead at this moment in time, much to the anger of some Merseyside club supporters.

Everton fans on team news

These Toffees fumed as the team news was shared on Twitter, with one Blue even going as far as to claim that it was ‘scandalous’:

“The league is a joke, it should be all teams play or they don’t. Not pick and choose what clubs they can force to play. Integrity of the league has gone for me”

Kenny drops LUFC transfer claim

With Leeds United’s disappointing results in the Premier League so far this season with just three wins from 16 played games and the fact that they’ve got some injury concerns at the moment, the upcoming January transfer window could be just what the Yorkshire club need to fix their season and get in good shape to attack the second half of the campaign.

What’s the word?

Pundit Paddy Kenny provided an exciting claim on Leeds’ potential exploits over the winter.

He issued the following four-word suggestion that “the money is there” for Leeds to spend in January.

As a result, it could spring the likes of Victor Orta and Andrea Radrizzani into action to sign some players during the upcoming window to help Bielsa strengthen his squad in areas that he may need some reinforcements in, which would surely excite a lot of Leeds fans.

Excitement

If the money is indeed there, it will surely leave Leeds supporters buzzing about what the club could achieve, not just in January but moving forward too.

After all, it’s pretty evident that Marcelo Bielsa’s squad could do with an extra dose of quality over the winter.

Leeds have conceded a total of 25 goals in the league so far this season so it would definitely be worth targeting some defensive players that could come in and make the team stronger at the back so they don’t keep leaking goals, especially with Liam Cooper apparently facing a lengthy spell out injured.

In addition to this, with Kalvin Phillips reportedly out of action for the next two months as a result of the hamstring injury he picked up during Leeds’ 2-2 draw against Brentford, this could force the club to also bring in another midfield option to play alongside the likes of Adam Forshaw and Mateusz Klich while Phillips is out.

That has been a problem area for a long period of time and upgrading on their current options would surely delight supporters at Elland Road.

With all of this in mind, it is obvious that Leeds need to do plenty of business in January and splash some of the cash that Kenny has referred to in an effort to fix some of their issues.

Most importantly, it will help the team have a productive second half of the season that results in them staying in the top-flight, an eventuality that would relieve and please everyone associated with the football club.

However, with Bielsa previously saying that it’s difficult to find players who are “competing” and available during the January window, Orta will have to work very hard to find the right players that could come in and sufficiently fit into Bielsa’s squad to effectively hit the ground running.

ICC lectures Under-19 teams on evading corruption

The ICC has sent its Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU), led by chief investigator Ravi Sawani, to New Zealand to sensitise players participating in the Under-19 World Cup about match-fixing. Prior to the tournament, the ACSU lectured the teams on safety precautions to ensure they did not fall into the trap of bookies and match-fixers.Chris Kuggeleijn, coach of the New Zealand team, said Sawani cautioned the players about the prevalence of match-fixing, and how bookies often tended to fix smaller details in ‘spot-bets’ rather than involve players in full-blown match-fixing. Potential spot-bets include the number of wides or no-balls bowled in a spell or even the number of fielders wearing caps on the field.”The thing that was made clear is that it is still going on, it hasn’t been stamped out, and it’s pretty scary. Fixers take you out for tea, they talk to you, always say hello and become your friend,” Kuggeleijn was quoted in the “It might even take them a year to fully build the relationship. They’re just after little snippets of information and it is things within a match to bet on rather than full-blown match-fixing.”Once you do something you’re bug*****. That’s because someone across the road will be taking a photo of you having a drink with the match-fixer or they’ll snap you taking something off him. Then you can’t get out.”Kuggeleijn expressed hope that ACSU’s measures at the World Cup would help to develop awareness among players at a young age.”The ICC approach includes prevention through education and enforcement of minimum standards and discipline in the dressing rooms; the gathering of intelligence; the investigation of reported breaches or approaches; and, where appropriate, disciplinary procedures. Hopefully, the ACSU’s presence will make players aware of the potential dangers.”ICC spokesman James Fitzgerald also reiterated that the ICC strove to control spot-betting at all levels.”Spot betting is an area we work hard to monitor. Players will be educated on that issue too. Potential corruptors look for vulnerable players and officials to provide inside information or encourage them to under-perform”, Fitzgerald said.Ross Taylor, who captained New Zealand in the 2002 edition of the U-19 World Cup, was in favour of the involvement of the ICC ACSU in the youth event.”Those involved in illegal betting like to ‘groom’ players from an early age, so quite a long way back, we decided to extend our education programme to the Under-19 World Cup. Obviously what to look out for doesn’t apply so much at that [Under-19] level but a number of those players were always going to represent their countries at the top level,” Taylor said.

Celtic: Hoops set for Tom Rogic boost

Celtic’s Tom Rogic should be available for Sunday’s SPFL clash with Aberdeen, according to The Athletic’s Kieran Devlin.

The Lowdown

Celtic will be looking to bounce back from Thursday’s Europa League defeat against Bayer Leverkusen, which knocked out of the competition, when they host The Dons.

Rogic has missed Celtic’s last five matches in all competitions as a result of the hamstring injury he sustained against Hibernian at the end of October (via Transfermarkt).

Manager Ange Postecoglou has raved about his ‘brilliant’ compatriot and the ‘extra special qualities that he brings’.

The Latest

Addressing a supporter in The Athletic’s matchday discussion on Thursday night, Devlin wrote that, while Rogic wasn’t ‘ready’ to face Leverkusen, he thinks he ‘should be for Sunday’.

The Verdict

What do the stats say about Rogic’s importance to Celtic? Well he’d started six of the last seven league games prior to his injury, suggesting he’d established himself as a key man under Postecoglou.

He also stands out in the squad because of his dribbling ability. He’s averaging 2.3 successful dribbles per 90 minutes and his nearest challenger (with more than three starts) is Jota on 1.3.

More generally, it’s crucial that Postecoglou has plenty of options at his disposal between now and the end of the year. Celtic are due to play 10 games in 34 days during that period.

In other news, this trio were Celtic’s poorest performers against Leverkusen.

We can still win this 4-1 – Shakib

Shakib Al Hasan has criticised the limp top-order batting after the defeat in the first one-dayer against Zimbabwe in Mirpur but was confident of bouncing back to win the five-match series

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has criticised the limp top-order batting after the defeat in the first one-dayer against Zimbabwe in Mirpur but was confident of bouncing back to win the five-match series.None of the top five Bangladesh batsmen crossed 20, and at one stage the home side were tottering at 62 for 6 before Mushfiqur Rahim’s 56 helped them post a decent total. “We made too many mistakes,” Shakib said. “The batsmen, myself included, needed to stay at the wicket. Too many wickets were lost in the early part of the innings and we never recovered.”Bangladesh have dominated encounters with Zimbabwe over the past few years, and were heavy favourites coming into the series. Shakib felt his side was still good enough to live up to their billing and take out the next four matches. “This is a nice wake-up call. I definitely feel that 4-1 is possible from here if we don’t repeat the errors in this game. We are a better team than they are.”Despite Mushfiqur’s efforts, Bangladesh could only make 183 which Shakib felt was at least 50 runs short of what they should have put up. “I will not say it was a 280 wicket. It is not a 180 wicket either. Something like 230-240 could have been very handy.”The home side pulled things back early in the chase with Abdur Razzak’s triple-strike, and snared two more to have Zimbabwe in some trouble at 90 for 5. But Man-of-the-Match Elton Chigumbura and Stuart Matsikenyeri piled on an unbroken 99-run stand to confirm the defeat. “Once we had them five down we felt we had a genuine chance,” Shakib said. “Another wicket at that point and we would have been into the tail and [Prosper] Utseya might not have batted.”Hamilton Masakadza, the Zimbabwe vice-captain, though said there were no nerves despite the loss of three quick wickets. “We were already 54 at that stage and when you are chasing a low score on that wicket we just knew that one good partnership would clinch it for us.”The one downer on a victorious day for Zimbabwe was the ankle injury to their captain Utseya, the seriousness of which was yet to be diagnosed. “He has a sprained left ankle and it doesn’t look too good at the moment,” Masakadza said. “We’ll see how he goes tomorrow.”

Missing Ugandan cricketers leave authorities fuming

Reaction has not been good after it was revealed seven of Uganda’s Under-19 side which participated in the World Cup Qualifier in Toronto are unaccounted for

Cricinfo staff17-Sep-2009Things went from bad to worse for Ugandan cricket and, by association, for the dreams of many young cricketers across Africa, with an admission that seven players, and not six as first reported, went missing at the end of the ICC Under-19 World Cup Qualifier in Toronto.Former Uganda board chairman Abbey Lutaya said it was “a great setback for Ugandan sport”. He continued: “It is indeed a big step backwards to the many achievements cricket had attained. Uganda have worked hard on the cricket front and with the hard work almost bearing fruit, these little boys decide to spoil everything now. They are so talented and it is catastrophic that not one but seven of them decide to vanish.”Cassim Suliman, chief executive of the Africa Cricket Association, said he was “not happy”, adding: “It sets a bad precedent and basically we need to somehow look at countering this by getting other measures in place.”The team manager Bashir Ansasira said the case had now moved from missing persons to an immigration issue. The Uganda Cricket Assocation asked the Canadian authorities to repatriate the missing players as and when they were found.”As of now there is a lot of speculation. Maybe it is a case of job hunt or seeking asylum,” Ansasira, who returned to Uganda on Friday, told AFP. “This was a disgraceful act. We never smelt any mischief.”None of the other players said anything about any planned escape. The boys did everything secretly. They even begged for permission to go shopping for their parents and relatives a day before they vanished. They left all their stuff behind including passports. We were totally hoodwinked. Actions of such individuals negatively impact on the image of the sport in the country.”While this has been linked with a similar incident in 2007 when two Ugandan players absconded after an ICC tournament in Australia and subsequently claimed asylum, there is confusion over the status of the seven. They have no documentation – the management appeared to have been holding their passports to try and avoid such an incident – but the Canadian police said no laws had been broken as the seven were all legally in the country on six-month visas. However, it is believed the country’s immigration department is not taking quite such a relaxed view.Speaking to Canada’s National Post, Dr. Joanna Quinn, an assistant professor at the University of Western Ontario who has extensive knowledge of Ugandan politics, said it was easier for Ugandans to get visas to Canada than to the USA or UK and played down suggestions they were seeking political asylum.”It doesn’t seem to make sense,” she said. “The only thing I can think of is [that they are seeking] economic improvements.”
