> O DIA A DIA DO BOTAFOGO

> CONFIRA E SIMULE A TABELA DO CAMPEONATO BRASILEIRO

'Sri Lanka always find a way to be in contention'

Sri Lanka stunned the world by winning the World Cup in 1996, a mere 14 years after becoming a Test nation. Since then, they have come close on a couple of occasions, finishing runners-up in the last two editions. In this episode of Contenders, former India captain Rahul Dravid and former South Africa captain Graeme Smith analyse Sri Lanka’s chances of clinching a second title. Can the experienced players in the squad make it count on the big stage? Will their impressive record in ICC tournaments continue?

What they said about…

Impressive record in big tournaments
Smith: The thing about Sri Lanka is that they never get spoken about as favourites. Nobody ever goes into a tournament talking Sri Lanka up but they always find a way to be in contention and they’ve proven that over the years.
Dravid: The last two World Cups have been in the West Indies and India, so the conditions have suited them a little bit more. I think this could be their big challenge, the conditions and how they cope with it.Experience in the squad
Smith: Their high-performing cricketers are their experienced cricketers, who have been around for a really long time. You look around at Jayawardene, Dilshan, Sangakkara on the batting front, they still dominate the performances and that really gives the freedom to the younger generation.
Dravid: They are generally a very close-knit, good unit and very, very clear about what their roles are. They understand each others’ games really well, they understand each others’ strengths and weaknesses, and I think that makes a big difference.Malinga’s battle with injury
Dravid: He’s so critical to their side because one of the areas where Sri Lanka would struggle would be in bowling at the death. If you remove Malinga from that line-up and you look around, you don’t really see anyone else [who can bowl at the death].Mathews as captain
Smith: He’s put in performances to help Sri Lanka win games and I think as a captain, he’s [gaining more and more] respect around the world and certainly within his team now. He’s become a high-performing player, which will really help his leadership.Sangakkara’s impressive form
Smith: I think he doesn’t quite get the kudos [that] a lot of the other top players have achieved. Just an incredible cricketer and to watch, how he’s churned out the runs in the last year and a half is amazing.
Dravid: At this stage in his career to just keep churning out the runs, game after game, whichever format of the game you put him in [is incredible]. He seems to have hit a purple patch. So that’s brilliant from Sri Lanka’s point of view, they’ve got their best batsman in the best form of his life.Jayawardene’s role
Dravid: He has been phenomenal and his record in all forms of the game has been incredible, and more than that, just the leadership he has provided to Sri Lankan cricket over the last 16-17 years has been terrific.Senanayake’s comeback after remodelling his action
Smith: He must have a really good understanding of his action [now]. Obviously he has got a good head on him. He understands how he bowls, how he wants to bowl and he has come back and fought back beautifully to be in the World Cup.
Dravid: It’s a big plus, if he is able to bowl in the same way that he has bowled [before reworking his action] with the same level of effectiveness.

Mashrafe targets another whitewash

Mashrafe Mortaza said Bangladesh’s preparation has given him the confidence to look forward to sealing another whitewash over Zimbabwe

‘We will perform better than the last four games’ – Mashrafe Mortaza•AFP

After Bangladesh won the Tests 3-0, new captain Mashrafe Mortaza has had to face questions about a 5-0 win in the one-day series quite regularly. He has always dodged them with the standard “we will take it one game at a time” reply. But on Sunday, he said the team’s preparation has given him the confidence to look forward to sealing another whitewash over Zimbabwe.”I can no longer say that we are taking the matches one by one,” Mashrafe said. “It is important to finish well. It is important to continue well, and the players are taking it seriously. We will perform better than the last four games. All the players are confident after going up 4-0 in the last game. Anything can happen in cricket, but we have to be prepared to win and we will give our best.”Bangladesh have batted first, defended well and have won all four games handsomely. The lowest margin had been in the fourth ODI when they won by 21 runs, but the contest had ended by the 40th over of the chase. There have been phases in the four matches when things didn’t go to plan, though. Bangladesh made two great starts with the bat in the second and third matches, but have lost early wickets in the first and fourth. They also had a batting collapse in the second game in Chittagong, but have always fought back hard and ended up in dominant positions.Mashrafe said that while winning was important, he hoped for a comprehensive display in the fifth ODI and finish the series on a high.”We have won matches, so we have been consistent in that area,” he said. “But performance-wise, we haven’t been as consistent. We have to improve in those areas. We are focusing there in training. We cannot collapse again, because it makes life difficult for us.”It is important for batsmen to bat normally even when they lose a lot of wickets, especially in good conditions. So I think it is always good that we recover from tough situations, when we lost 3-4 early wickets.”Bangladesh have not been shy of changing a winning combination and have so far used 15 players from their squad in an effort to try to test the bench ahead of the World Cup. Soumya Sarkar is the latest to be added to the Bangladesh team for the fifth ODI, and it is likely that he will make his international debut. He is the latest pace bowling allrounder to be picked ahead of Ziaur Rahman and Farhad Reza, seasoned domestic campaigners but with ordinary international records.Mashrafe said that they were not judging a player by one or two performances – good or bad – but had confidence that Soumya’s bowling was good enough for international cricket due to his discipline in line and length.”It is difficult to judge a player in one or two matches,” Mashrafe said. “If it was a 10-match series, it would have been easier but that’s not possible. We are not throwing away a player after just one game or judging him on his performance of that one game. But it is true that one match is not enough.”I don’t want to judge anyone. Ziaur Rahman and Farhad Reza are experienced cricketers. Soumya is a very effective bowler, and he can bowl in one spot regularly. Some people think that pace is very important in international cricket, but it is not always true. What he lacks in pace, he makes up in line and length. If he plays tomorrow, I hope he can prove it. I don’t want to make anyone feel small, but we had to pick someone among the allrounders.”

Participaram da atividade: Igor Vinicius, Arboleda, Bruno Alves, Anderson Martins, Reinaldo, Willian Farias, Luan, Tchê Tchê, Hernanes, Toró, Raniel, Everton, Everton Felipe, Alexandre Pato.

Middlesex ride on Rogers, Morgan tons

This was a day dominated by two batsmen but Middlesex need only cast an eye over Nottinghamshire’s statistics so far to be reminded that the key to success in Championship cricket lies with the bowlers

ScorecardEoin Morgan finished the day unbeaten on 174 and within reach of his highest first-class score•PA PhotosThis was a day dominated by two batsmen but Middlesex need only cast an eye over Nottinghamshire’s statistics so far to be reminded that the key to success in Championship cricket lies with the bowlers. Going into this match, Chris Read’s team had five batsman with 500 or more Division One runs so far compared with Middlesex’s two, yet none with 20 wickets or more against Middlesex’s three. It provides much of the explanation for why Middlesex have won four matches and Nottinghamshire only two thus far and why Middlesex, with Steven Finn (30 wickets), Tim Murtagh (24) and Toby Roland-Jones (23) to call upon, look a more optimistic bet for the title. If those bowlers can underscore the work done by Chris Rogers and Eoin Morgan that only emphasised the ordinariness of the home side’s attack in several phases of the day, then Middlesex’s title ambitions will be further reinforced.Morgan’s unbeaten 174 gave him back-to-back hundreds following his 103 against Lancashire a month ago, which ended a drought of five years without one century in the Championship. This was his highest score in Championship cricket and his career-best 209 for Ireland might be under threat if he can negotiate the opening overs of day two against a new ball 16 overs old.Rogers, with whom he shared a third-wicket stand of 272 that is a Middlesex record against Nottinghamshire, sees Morgan this season making clear progress in his four-day game following his decision to forego his annual stint in the IPL.”A couple of years ago when he played some four-day cricket for us I still felt there were areas of his game that needed improving, particularly his defence,” Rogers said. “But his he has come back this year I have been very surprised at how that has improved.”His game is in excellent order at the moment and he just has that ability to take teams down once he gets in as he did today. He can hit 360 degrees around the field and that is a rare skill.”I think England would benefit from having a positive player like him in the Test side but he has to earn it now by putting together consistent performances in the way Sam Robson did.”Rogers himself was in a familiar groove here, dominating the Nottinghamshire attack until, within 20 runs of a double-hundred, he went for the uppercut against Andre Adams and found James Taylor lurking at deep point. Nonetheless, it is fair to say that the Australia opener knows how to score runs against Nottinghamshire bowling. In his last seven first-class innings against the county, he has hit 526, only once scoring fewer than 50.Fours zipped off the bats of both men as the help Nottinghamshire had hoped to draw from the conditions on a cloudy, muggy morning failed to materialise. Rogers hit 26 fours, Morgan has 27 and two sixes, both off Samit Patel’s left-arm spin. Naturally, there were some shots to admire but Nottinghamshire offered too many opportunities for them to tuck into. Adams had bowled Dawid Malan with a lovely delivery that straightened to hit the top of off-stump and Harry Gurney had Neil Dexter caught at first slip soon afterwards but moments in which the bowlers had the upper hand were rare.If Nottinghamshire’s bowling looked below par at times then their fielding was none too clever either. Wessels spilled the biggest chance, offered by Morgan off Gurney on 20. Wessels had bruised his hand taking his first catch and left the field for attention immediately but Mick Newell, the Nottinghamshire head coach, said it did not excuse the drop. There was no forgiving Patel, either, when he missed Rogers on 89 at second slip off Peter Siddle, even though it was a more difficult one, to his left and travelling.Nottinghamshire fought back a little with the second new ball, which Siddle in particular made better use of than the first one, dismissing Joe Denly via a catch at second slip and uprooting John Simpson’s off stump. The Championship pennant has not been hoisted at Lord’s since 1993, the last of seven titles won during Don Bennett’s tenure as coach. The flags at Trent Bridge flew at half-mast to mark Bennett’s passing this week at the age of 80 and the players of both sides honoured his memory with a minute’s silence before play began. It might just have been a moment of inspiration for the visiting side.

Kuggeleijn four upturns Canterbury

A round-up of the Ford Trophy matches that took place on March 23, 2014

Northern Districts defended 241 against Canterbury to move to the top of the points table. The two teams had begun the match tied on 18 points, and Canterbury looked set to move ahead when they were 208 for 4 with about eight overs to go in the chase. However, the run-out of Henry Nicholls for 45 sparked a collapse, with medium pacers Scott Kuggeleijn and Graeme Aldridge proceeding to bowl them out for 226 in the 49th, ensuring Dean Brownlie’s competent 84 went in vain.Canterbury had suffered a blow when Rob Nicol had left the field earlier, hurt, without opening his account. It was Nicol who had dented Northern Districts in their innings with his part-timers, picking up three middle-order wickets in quick succession to stem the flow of runs at the death and keep Canterbury’s target to a manageable 242. But it proved to be out of their reach in the end.Auckland coined together an efficient bowling performance after Donovan Grobbelaar’s half-century afforded them enough cushion to beat Otago by 73 runs. A profitable opening partnership helped allay nerves after Auckland were asked to bat, but after the 62 runs added by Tim McKintosh and Anaru Kitchen, the stutter began. Three wickets for 12 runs, two of which were via run-outs, stole the momentum. Grobbelaar (51) was struggling for partners until No.8 Michael Bates (30) showed fortitude during a partnership of 76 runs in 87 balls. Neil Wagner accounted for both of them in the 47th over as Auckland finished at 238.The chase shouldn’t have bothered a batting line-up with Hamish Rutherford, Jesse Ryder and Ryan ten Doeschate, but none of them could convert their starts. Seamer Tipene Friday took 3 for 49, his best List A figures, and instigated a wobble as Otago lost three wickets in four overs. Ryder was sixth man out and the equation turned into a difficult 135 off 148. Bates also took three wickets and Grobbelaar chipped in with two as well, as the tail could not muster even half the necessary runs.Wellington’s top order was enough to overhaul Central Districts’ modest total as half-centuries from Michael Papps and Tom Blundell set up a seven-wicket victory with 10 overs to spare. Kruger van Wyk (70) and captain Kieran Noema-Barnett (52) were the only, and much needed, sources of stability for Central Districts recovered from 91 for 5. Both batsmen fell in quick succession though and Wellington were given a simple target of 201. Seamer Brent Arnel was the most successful bowler on the day, with 4 for 26. There was hardly any trouble in the chase with the second- and third-wicket partnerships yielding 87 and 93 runs respectively. James Franklin sealed it by smashing 18 off five balls, including two sixes.

Barroca destaca a terceira vitória seguida do Bota: 'Feliz e satisfeito'

No primeiro tempo a chance do Diego Souza no início. No segundo tivemos chances claras.

NZ seamers lay platform for innings win

Smart stats

  • Shivnarine Chanderpaul became the seventh batsman in Test cricket, and the second West Indies batsman after Brian Lara, to score 11000 runs. His 76 in the first innings was his 90th fifty-plus score in Tests, pushing him to joint-sixth place on the list of batsmen with most fifty-plus scores in Test cricket.

  • New Zealand enforced a follow-on for the 16th time in Test cricket and for the second time against West Indies. The last time they asked West Indies to follow on was in Wellington in 1999.

  • The Dunedin Test is the 29th time that West Indies are following-on in Test matches. They have managed to save six of these 29 Tests. The last time West Indies saved a Test after following-on was against India in St. Lucia in 2006.

  • The 396-run lead over West Indies in the first innings was New Zealand’s second-highest first-innings lead in Tests. For West Indies, the lead was the seventh-highest ever conceded by them in the first innings of a Test, and the fifth highest conceded in the first innings after bowling first.

  • For West Indies, the 117-run partnership between Kirk Edwards and Darren Bravo in the second innings was only the third century-partnership for the second wicket in 48 Test innings since 2011. The last time West Indies batsmen added 100 or more for the second wicket against a major Test team was against Australia in Bridgetown in 2012.

The only other time this millennium New Zealand asked a side other than Zimbabwe or Bangladesh to follow on, the game ended in a draw after their bowlers could only dismiss four batsmen in 180 overs. The chances of a repeat, New Zealand would believe, were extremely low against a West Indies batting line-up low on confidence in the longer format despite the loss of only two wickets in 49 second-innings overs in Dunedin. West Indies still trail by 228 runs after their first innings folded for 213, with Tim Southee and Trent Boult sharing seven wickets between them. The pitch at the University Oval had lost its greenish tinge and with the sun out, the conditions seemed best for batting. West Indies, trailing by 542 at the start of the day, couldn’t have asked for more. The New Zealand bowlers, however, showed yet again where West Indies had gone wrong in the first two days, bowling predominantly fuller lengths and using the bouncer sparingly. With Marlon Samuels and Darren Bravo staying rooted to the crease against swinging deliveries, a wicket never seemed too far away.Southee extracted an outside edge off Samuels’ bat in the second over of the day only to see it fall short of first slip. In the next over, Samuels had another reprieve after Nigel Llong had ruled him out lbw as he played outside the line to a Boult delivery that came in. The replays showed the ball just missing off stump and the decision was overturned.New Zealand’s search for a wicket ended in the fourth over of the day as Bravo drove at a full delivery from Southee and got a thick outside edge which was snaffled by Brendon McCullum at gully. Fifteen balls later, Southee took advantage of Samuels’ reluctance to come forward and had him caught at first slip off an outswinger delivered from a wider angle as the batsman was sucked in to a loose drive to be dismissed for 14.Deonarine added 33 for the fifth wicket with Shivnarine Chanderpaul, pushing at fuller deliveries with hard hands. The technique earned him two boundaries, but an attempted wild drive – without moving his feet – off an angled delivery in Southee’s seventh over of his spell went straight to first slip where Ross Taylor completed the catch after a brief fumble.Unfazed by the indiscretion shown by other batsmen, Chanderpaul batted confidently, driving at the full deliveries, pulling the short ones and using his feet to Ish Sodhi. A powerful pull off Neil Wagner took him past 11,000 runs in Test cricket and three fours in the next over bowled by Sodhi brought him his 62nd half-century in Tests.Ramdin gave Chanderpaul useful support in a 68-run stand but in the third over after lunch, he couldn’t get out of the way off a short delivery from Boult and edged it to the keeper. Boult struck in the next over with the big wicket of Chanderpaul, whose indecision proved fatal as he shouldered arms to an incoming delivery and was adjudged lbw after an 87-ball 76.West Indies could only add 30 more runs as Sodhi, expensive in his spell, picked up two of the last three wickets to fall. Darren Sammy, who was hampered by the hamstring niggle, and was turning down singles, inexplicably called Tino Best for a second, but the latter’s late response meant he was caught well short at non-striker’s end by a throw from long on.It seemed West Indies’ second innings was headed the same way as the first when Kieran Powell drove at a length delivery outside off from Boult and edged it to second slip, but Kirk Edwards and Bravo curtailed the urge to be flamboyant and showed improved application in the second innings. That Boult and Southee needed an extended breather after their first spells worked in the batsmen’s favour as Neil Wagner and Sodhi failed to exert similar pressure after tea. While Wagner couldn’t extract the same movement as the two lead seamers, Sodhi dished out a regular dose of long-hops and full-tosses which allowed the two batsmen to settle into the innings.By the time Southee came back for his second spell, Bravo had put on the cape of confidence and he moved to 40 with a hat-trick of boundaries through covers. In the next over, though, it seemed as if Bravo had fallen short after yet another start. He took the eyes off a short delivery from Wagner and the ball ballooned to first slip after hitting his forearm. Umpire Llong adjudged it not out, and the replays suggested the ball could have only flicked the glove-straps. The third umpire, however, went with the on-field umpire’s call after New Zealand asked for a review. Bravo survived, he rubbed his forearm and wrist immediately after getting hit and that may have worked in his favour.Bravo did get to his half-century – his ninth in Tests and first in 2013 – and along with Edwards helped West Indies resist New Zealand’s charge with a century stand. Edwards, who collected 28 of his 59 runs against Sodhi, was eventually trapped lbw playing back to a slider from the legspinner. Sodhi bowled a much-improved second spell with tighter lines, while slipping in a deceptive googly from time to time that had Samuels in trouble more than once. With eight West Indies wickets remaining, New Zealand would hope to finish off the match on the fourth day.

TN's Prasanna hits ton on UP's day

R Prasanna (left) kept Tamil Nadu afloat with his fourth first-class ton•ESPNcricinfo Ltd/ Siddarth Ravindran

Beside one of the sightscreens at the Bhamashah stadium, there is a large billboard titled ‘The pride of Meerut’ with pictures of Praveen Kumar and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Uttar Pradesh were without those two bowlers, who can be devastating with the new ball, but their absence was hardly felt as RP Singh and debutant Amit Mishra combined to reduce the big-name Tamil Nadu batting to 20 for 4. That too, after Tamil Nadu chose to bat.A century from the visitors’ least-heralded specialist batsman, R Prasanna, and a half-century from their most promising youngster, B Aparajith, helped inject some competitiveness to the total. The curator, Ravindra Chauhan, suggested the early assistance could have been due to an easterly wind this morning, which helps retain the moisture in the track, unlike the westerly which prevailed over the past week. Whatever the reason, the several hundred schoolchildren who filled the stands early on had plenty to shout about in the first hour.Right off the first ball of the match, RP had Abhinav Mukund lbw. S Badrinath fell on the first ball of RP’s second over, as Mohammad Kaif offered a reminder of his fielding abilities with a sharp low catch in the slips. Another athletic take, this time by Arish Alam at gully, sent back Dinesh Karthik. The other Tamil Nadu batsman who has won an India cap, M Vijay, fared no better, done in by an incutter during debutant seamer Mishra’s first over. All three of UP’s frontline quicks – RP, Mishra and Imtiaz Ahmed – worked up decent pace, and weren’t shy of slipping in the odd bouncer. They posed a stiff challenge to the upcoming Aparajith. The hype around Aparajith has increased this season, as he has reeled off two doubles and two other hundreds in his previous five first-class matches. With all the other heavyweights of the Tamil Nadu batting dismissed, this was a test as much of Aparajith’s temperament as his technique. He responded with an innings which is unlikely to go down as his most fluent, but showcased his composure in a difficult situation. Though there were plenty of plays-and-misses, and a caught-and-bowled reprieve from Piyush Chawla, he soldiered on to 60 and put on a century stand with Tamil Nadu’s hero of the day, Prasanna.Prasanna has been around on the domestic circuit for nearly a decade without quite making a big name for himself. This was only his second century since December 2006, but like his previous one in the 2011-12 semi-final against Mumbai, it came when his team desperately needed it. He was cautious early on against the quicks, leaving plenty of deliveries, and only opened out when Chawla bowled some erratic legspin. There were doubts about whether he would he would get to his century as Aparajith was dismissed with him still some way away from three figures. The tail stuck around though, and after a few nervy moments, he poked the ball towards point and yelled for the single to bring up his fourth first-class hundred.Still, Tamil Nadu looked set to be bowled out for a score around 200 till teenager Aswin Crist swung his bat around against the second new ball to pick up a bunch of boundaries on a sluggish outfield. They were 216 for 7 when the new ball was taken, as soon as it was available, and then hit 42 off the final 10 overs. Crist got to half-century, and his 79-run unbroken partnership for the eighth wicket with Prasanna took some of the sheen off what was still UP’s day.
