Sir Jim Ratcliffe in Man Utd contact with 4-3-3 manager loved by Harry Kane

Manchester United are finding it tough to string together a run of Premier League results and have now made contact with a high-profile manager who is loved by Harry Kane.

Ruben Amorim's uncertain Man Utd future

Falling to a disappointing defeat at Brentford on Saturday has heaped even more pressure on Ruben Amorim, who is feeling the heat after a fourth loss of the season across all competitions.

With Manchester United now in the bottom half of the Premier League table, there is plenty of anxiety among supporters as the Red Devils continue to falter and yet remain wedded to their 3-4-3 formation.

Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire were poor performers against Brentford, a rare occurrence, but their teammates hardly stepped up to be counted either on a day where the hosts were far more concise at both ends of the field.

Speaking post-match, Amorim lamented his struggling side for their lack of control in the game, acknowledging the Bees made far lighter work of fashioning attacking opportunities.

“When we win, it’s not the system. When we lose, it’s the system. I understand that. I think it’s more that we play this game like Brentford wants to play this game. With long balls, we kick the ball, second balls, and we never settle down our game. We never play our game.

“We never push the opponent. We knew that every time they recover the ball, they will make a run, and they will fight for the ball. We suffered two goals like that.”

Sunderland travel to Old Trafford next time out as Amorim looks to steady a ship that is far from stable. Nevertheless, Sir Jim Ratcliffe may now have taken a decisive step towards finding his successor.

Man Utd make contact with Gareth Southgate

According to talkSPORT, Manchester United and Ratcliffe have made contact with former England manager Gareth Southgate in recent weeks over replacing Amorim in the dugout at Old Trafford.

Ratcliffe has reached out to his camp, while Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner and Bournemouth coach Andoni Iraola are also on their three-man shortlist.

Any decision to part ways with Amorim would likely be held back until November, with the current cost of terminating his association with the club said to be around £12 million.

Southgate, who prefers a 4-3-3 formation, has been on a break from management after leading England to the final of EURO 2024. The 55-year-old also took the Three Lions to the 2020 showpiece of the competition alongside finishing fourth in the 2018 World Cup.

Highly respected by his peers, Kane previously labelled him ‘one of England’s greatest ever managers’ after he departed the position with a record of 61 wins, 24 draws and 17 losses in 102 matches, giving him a win ratio of 59.8%.

His only experience in the Premier League as a coach came with Middlesbrough from 2006 to 2009. However, Manchester United would be an entirely different kettle of fish, though his statesmanlike exterior and ability to build compact sides could help to stem the flow of goals conceded at the Red Devils.

Gilberto Silva's "honest" verdict on Martin Zubimendi's start at Arsenal

Former Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva has delivered his verdict on how Martin Zubimendi has taken to life at the Emirates Stadium.

Gunners off to a flying start to the season

After coming second in the Premier League three years on the spin, Mikel Arteta identified the need to strengthen his squad considerably in the summer transfer window, and spent heavily, bolstering his options in a number of key areas.

Viktor Gyokeres was arguably the statement signing, amid widespread demand for Arteta to bring in a new striker, and the Sweden international is off to a solid, if not spectacular start, having scored three goals in his opening seven league games.

Folllowing the departure of Thomas Partey, it was also vital to strengthen in midfield, and Zubimendi was among the most notable additions, with the Spain international starting six of the seven Premier League games up to this point.

Arsenal let "one of the best finishers of the last 15 years" leave for £0

This former Arsenal forward would be an upgrade on the current frontman at Arteta’s disposal.

As such, the Spaniard has clearly managed to impress Arteta, and he has also caught the eye of Gilberto Silva, despite the Brazilian admitting he wasn’t aware of who he was before the Gunners finalised a summer deal.

Zubimendi establishing himself as key player for Arsenal

It is no surprise that Arteta has started the Spain international so consistently, considering he has put in some fantastic performances in the Premier League, averaging a 7.33 SofaScore match rating, the second-highest figure of any Arsenal player.

The 26-year-old also won the Guinness Goal of the Month award for September, courtesy of a phenomenal strike in the 3-0 victory against Nottingham Forest, during which he scored two goals in one game for the first time in his career.

There were some concerns that Zubimendi’s new midfield partner, Rice, may have been ruled out due to injury, but the 26-year-old featured in England’s 3-0 victory over Wales, meaning he looks on course to be available for the trip to Fulham next weekend.

Man City player ratings vs Brentford: Erling Haaland singlehandedly beats the Bees, but Pep Guardiola left to sweat over another Rodri injury

A first-half strike from Erling Haaland was all that settled the two sides as Manchester City ran out 1-0 winners at Brentford on Sunday evening. The Norwegian continued his freakish scoring form with an extremely well-taken goal to move his side up to fifth in the Premier League table heading into the October international break, sitting three points behind early leaders Arsenal.

It took only ten minutes for City to nip in front. Josko Gvardiol's ball through midfield found Haaland on the last line, and he managed to spin Sepp van den Berg with his supreme physicality before slotting under Caoimhin Kelleher.

City could have gone two up when Tijjani Reijnders met a floated Nico O'Reilly cross and struck a fierce volley towards goal, only for the strong arm of Kelleher to deny him a beauty.

At the start of the second half, City had Gianluigi Donnarumma to thank for keeping them ahead when Josko Gvardiol comically lost an aerial duel to Igor Thiago, leaving the Brazilian to race through on goal, but the Italian goalkeeper thwarted the striker with a fine save.

For the most part, City were unthreatened in the second half, though their hearts were in mouths in the final minute of regulation time when Donnarumma's pass from the pack was blocked by Kevin Schade and the loose ball deflected wide. That was as close as Brentford got to an equaliser as City held on to claim the victory.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Gianluigi Donnarumma (7/10):

A passenger for the most part but showed exactly why he was chosen as the man to replace Ederson with a sprawling save to deny Thiago early in the second half, which ultimately proved a pivotal point in the contest.

    Matheus Nunes (6/10):

Another outing at right-back with little to shout about either way. Didn't get overly involved in possession but wasn't rinsed going the other way.

    Ruben Dias (7/10):

Oozed confidence even when trying to keep up with the electric pace of Schade, which you couldn't say about the Manchester United defenders who visited Brentford last week.

    Josko Gvardiol (7/10):

Played the pass which Haaland took in stride to score early doors. Held his own in the high line all throughout the first half but opened it up singlehandedly at the start of the second when he failed to deal with the presence and physicality of Thiago. Notably dropped a shade in confidence thereafter.

    Nico O'Reilly (7/10):

Growing into the left-back role with each passing week. Unlucky not to have registered an assist for Reijnders in the first half when he picked the Dutchman out with a pinpoint cross.

    Midfield

    Rodri (N/A):

The 2024 Ballon d'Or winner's injury struggles continued, having to be withdrawn midway through the first half.

    Tijjani Reijnders (6/10):

Epitomised City's superior technical levels in midfield with a series of dribbles out of tight areas, though these seldom hurt Brentford too much. Replaced by Silva for the final 15 minutes.

    Phil Foden (6/10):

Involved in almost every positive move City had in the first half, but was much quieter after the break as the visitors struggled to find a second goal.

    Attack

    Oscar Bobb (6/10):

Played an almost identical game to Foden, dancing his way past defenders and creating havoc in the opening 45 minutes before being muzzled after the break. Subbed for Doku.

    Erling Haaland (8/10):

What would City do without him, eh? Now scored at 22 of the 23 Premier League stadiums he's played in (Anfield is his only blemish) and just six goals away from joining the division's 100 Club.

    Savinho (5/10):

Fresh from signing a new long-term contract, the Brazilian showed glimpses of his talent in transition, but didn't tangibly give Brentford too much to be scared of.

    Subs & Manager

    Nico Gonzalez (6/10):

Came on in the first half for the injured Rodri. City controlled much of the game either way despite the prolonged absence of their more famous Spanish midfielder.

    Jeremy Doku (5/10):

On for Bobb for the last quarter of an hour. Didn't contribute much with City seemingly happy to settle for the one-goal lead.

    Bernardo Silva (5/10):

Replaced Reijnders, though like Doku was rarely involved.

    Pep Guardiola (6/10):

It was a tale of two halves for City, who looked a cut above in attack early on and then shut up shop to keep Brentford from truly threatening with the clock winding down. Now up to 250 Premier League wins in his career.

Australia and South Africa in battle to top the group

Both teams made 300-plus totals in their opening games, so expect another run-fest on a flat surface in Rawalpindi

Firdose Moonda24-Feb-20253:05

Australia’s batters vs SA’s bowlers – who has the upper hand?

Big picture: Expect a hard-fought contestAustralia and South Africa brushed off poor pre-tournament results to record wins in their opening matches of the Champions Trophy and they meet each other with their batters in good form. Australia may be riding slightly higher after they completed the highest successful chase in tournament history – 352 – with 15 balls to spare. South Africa’s 315 for 6 against Afghanistan resulted in victory by 107 runs and put them higher on the points table thanks to a bigger net run-rate.All that, combined with expectations of a batter-friendly pitch in Rawalpindi, means the bowling attacks can expect a tough day out after already being challenged by absences in personnel. Australia are missing more than South Africa with Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc all out of the tournament. But with Anrich Nortje and Gerald Coetzee also ruled out, South Africa had to look elsewhere for express pace. Still, they have five seamers and three spinners (if you include Aiden Markram) to choose from. Australia’s squad make-up is similar, and with Marnus Labuschagne turning his arm over, they have additional options. So the real point of difference may lie in selection and how the captains allocate overs to exert pressure on each other.Related

South Africa 'bullish' about their chances – like Australia always are

Victory will not guarantee either team progression to the semi-finals but will leave the winner primed to top the group, so expect a contest that lives up to its billing, especially if the last one was anything to go by. In 2023, at the ODI World Cup semi-final, South Africa were restricted to an under-par total of 212 but had Australia seven down in the 48th when the winning runs were scored. That game had the tension of a low-scoring thriller. This one is likely to have the fireworks of a run fest.Whatever happens, given these two sides routinely bring out the most competitive streaks in each other, this will be one of the tournament’s showpiece matches in front of what is expected to be a sell-out crowd.Form guideAustralia: WLLLL
South Africa: WLLLL4:16

Carey: We know South Africa are a great team

In the spotlight: Nathan Ellis and Rassie van der DussenIn a match where 707 runs were scored in 97.3 overs, conceding less than six runs an over was simply outstanding. That’s what Nathan Ellis did for Australia against England, where his ten overs cost just 51 runs in a display of immense control and maturity in just his tenth ODI. Ellis is unusual in that at 5′ 9″ he isn’t as tall as we’d expect a fast bowler to be and relies on consistency and variety rather than pace to make an impact. While he may not be an outright attacking bowler, in a tournament where restricting batting sides in the middle overs has already proven to be important, how he performs in that phase could be decisive in Australia’s campaign.Part of a powerful and in-form batting order, Rassie van der Dussen has the third-best ODI batting average of all time for South Africa and is among their most consistent performers despite a recent dip, and he may have started to feel the pressure of competition for his place. His 46-ball 52 against Afghanistan was his first half-century in 11 innings. South Africa are choosing between Ryan Rickelton, Tony de Zorzi and van der Dussen for two of three top-order spots and also have Tristan Stubbs on the bench, so van der Dussen will want to do all he can to keep proving his worth.Team news: Heinrich Klassen to have fitness testAustralia don’t have reason to change things and Alex Carey suggested the XI would remain as is. They may consider a switch in their attack, and swap out one of their two left-arm quicks – Spencer Johnson and Ben Dwarshuis – for Sean Abbott.Australia: (possible): 1 Matthew Short, 2 Travis Head, 3 Steven Smith (capt), 4 Marnus Labuschagne, 5 Josh Inglis (wk), 6 Alex Carey, 7 Glenn Maxwell, 8 Ben Dwarshuis, 9 Nathan Ellis, 10 Adam Zampa, 11 Spencer JohnsonHeinrich Klaasen missed South Africa’s opener against Afghanistan because of an elbow niggle and will have a fitness test to assess his availability for this match. If Klaasen is fit, South Africa are likely to change their opening combination to make room for him in the middle order, which would mean leaving de Zorzi out after Rickelton made himself undroppable with his century against Afghanistan. South Africa seem content to play one specialist spinner and have the option of four quicks, which could leave Tabraiz Shamsi on the bench again.South Africa (possible): 1 Temba Bavuma (capt), 2 Ryan Rickelton, 3 Rassie van der Dussen, 4 Aiden Markram, 5 Heinrich Klaasen (wk), 6 David Miller, 7 Wiaan Mulder, 8 Marco Jansen, 9 Keshav Maharaj, 10 Kagiso Rabada, 11 Lungi Ngidi4:00

Agar: Australia’s bowlers need to control middle overs better

Pitch and conditionsBefore this tournament, Rawalpindi had not hosted ODIs since April 2023, when Pakistan and New Zealand made scores of 288, 291, 336 and 337 in two matches. South Africa’s captain Temba Bavuma and Carey said they expected another high-scoring encounter on what should be a flat surface. Bavuma also revealed that South Africa noted significant dew during a training session at the venue over the weekend and both he and Carey expected chasing to be easier than defending a target. The weather will be cooler than in Karachi or Lahore with a high of just 17 degrees, and there is some drizzle forecast in the afternoon which could impact the match.Stats and trivia Australia’s chase of 352 against England was their second-highest successful chase in ODIs. In that game, Josh Inglis became the fourth Australian men’s cricketer to complete a hundred in all formats, after Aaron Finch, Glenn Maxwell and David Warner. Since 2016, South Africa have batted first 12 times against Australia in ODIs and lost only two of those matches. The most recent of these defeats was the semi-final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. Travis Head has scored 62 runs off 55 balls off Kagiso Rabada in ODIs and been dismissed by him three times. Against Lungi Ngidi, however, he’s scored only 15 off 25 balls for two dismissals. Klaasen has scored 121 runs off 89 balls from Adam Zampa in ODIs and been dismissed twice by him.Quotes”We probably don’t want to chase 350 too many more times but our bowlers will learn a lot from that hit out.”
“We’re quite bullish about our chances. Even though in the [preceding] tri-series, we didn’t have all our guys, it still was an opportunity for us to get whatever intel that we can on the conditions and share that information with all the other guys who came in. Confidence is good. We’re quite optimistic about our chances and how far we can go in this competition.”

Harry Kane receives incredible apology from German media after previously being labelled €100m flop as Bayern Munich striker scores another hat-trick

Harry Kane received an incredible apology from the German media after some corners of the press previously questioned his €100 million price tag. Kane took his goals tally to eight in four Bundesluga matches for the 2025-26 campaign on Saturday as he scored a hat-trick in Bayern's 4-1 win over Hoffenheim. The England captain has scored 98 goals in 103 appearances since moving from Tottenham in 2023.

Questions from German press over €100m transfer

At the time of his move from Tottenham to Munich, several journalists in Germany questioned Bayern's decision to splash a whopping €100m (£87m/$117m) on a 30-year-old player, who at that point had not won a single trophy in his professional career. However, Kane proved his doubters wrong as he is already nearing 100 goals for the Bavarian side in just over two years.

AdvertisementGettyGerman journalist issues apology to 'Mr Kane'

journalist Alfred Draxler wrote after Bayern's win at Hoffenheim: "I was one of those who viewed the €100m transfer from Tottenham to Bayern Munich in 2023 rather critically. I thought: too much money for a then 30-year-old who had never won a title. There are cheaper options. Niclas Fullkrug, for example, had scored 16 goals for Werder Bremen the previous season.

"[Kane is] never injured! That's not just luck. It speaks volume about strict discipline and hard training. I don't think Harry Kane is vacationing in a hotel where you have to reserve your lounger in the morning. If I ever meet him, I'd get up really early and put a towel on his lounger for him. I wouldn't do that for any English person!"

Kane's ninth hat-trick for Bayern Munich

Kane netted his ninth hat-trick for Bayern Munich against Hoffenheim and his second of this current season. He also has 70 Bundesliga goals to his name in just 67 appearances.

Dream Colwill fix: BlueCo prepare bid to sign £43m "beast" for Chelsea

What was shaping up to be a perfect pre-season for Chelsea took a bit of a hit last week.

In a statement on Thursday morning, the club confirmed that defender Levi Colwill had sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury and had undergone surgery as a result.

The Englishman is now set to miss most, if not all, of the upcoming campaign, which is a massive blow for Enzo Maresca considering how well he played towards the end of last season.

Fortunately, with the transfer window still open, it looks like the West Londoners have identified someone who could be the perfect replacement.

Chelsea target perfect Colwill replacement

It’s been another busy summer of spending and selling for Chelsea this year.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

For example, the club made a tidy profit on Noni Madueke and finally shifted Kepa Arrizabalaga, with both going to Arsenal, while bringing in an array of seriously exciting youngsters like Jamie Gittens, Jorrel Hato, Liam Delap and Joao Pedro.

On top of that, they continue to be linked with Xavi Simons and Alejandro Garnacho, and now with Colwill out, appear to be targeting another exciting defender.

At least that is according to a recent report from Spain, which has claimed Chelsea are very interested in Piero Hincapié.

Although it sounds like the club have already moved beyond mere interest, as the report claims they’ve already prepared an offer worth €50m for the centre-back, which converts to about £43m.

It remains to be seen whether Bayer Leverkusen will accept such an offer, but given Hincapié’s ability and potential, plus the injury to Colwill, Chelsea should do all they can to wrap this potential transfer up as soon as possible.

Why Hincapié would be the perfect Colwill replacement

There will likely be a section of the fanbase who argue that Hato could and should be the solution to this problem for Chelsea this season, and while it’s an argument that makes sense, it’s not one we agree with.

Jorrel Hato

This season is going to be a massively important one for Maresca and his squad, one in which fans will expect them to at last challenge for the title, and so starting a 19-year-old with no experience in a top-five league feels too risky for the club and the Dutchman’s development.

This brings us to the first, and arguably the most crucial, reason why Hincapie would be the perfect replacement for Colwill: his experience.

Despite still being relatively young for a centre-back, the 23-year-old titan has a proven track record at the top level.

For example, at club level, the “absolute beast,” as journalist Antonio Mango dubbed him, has made 115 appearances in the Bundesliga, 26 in the Europa League, 14 in the Champions League and eight in the DFB Pokal since moving to Europe.

Moreover, he was a key member of the Leverkusen team that won the league and cup double undefeated a couple of seasons ago.

Then, if that wasn’t enough, the “sensational” ace, as dubbed by one analyst, has also won 46 senior caps for Ecuador, with nine of them coming in the Copa América and three in the World Cup.

Piero Hincapie in action for Bayer Leverkusen

Another benefit to this is that he’s already got a well-established partnership and understanding with Moises Caicedo, which would make settling in at Stamford Bridge far easier.

Ultimately, losing Colwill is a massive blow, but thanks to his vast experience and history of winning things, Hincapie could be the perfect solution for Chelsea.

Next Gibbs-White: Nottingham Forest hold talks over signing £30m "menace"

Nottingham Forest supporters will now be clamouring for the start of the Premier League season, safe in the knowledge that Morgan Gibbs-White will line up in the famous Garibaldi Red for the Tricky Trees’ opener against Brentford next month.

It really looked as if Gibbs-White would leave Nuno Espirito Santo’s side behind for a switch to Tottenham Hotspur, in a move that would have banked Forest £60m.

However, this controversial move would never get off the ground in the end, culminating in the 25-year-old penning a new, unexpected deal at the City Ground instead.

Forest will be on the hunt for some exciting signings now to further boost spirits in the Midlands, as a £30m attacker appears on the Premier League side’s shopping list, away from Nuno’s men also being close on a deal for Bologna forward Dan Ndoye.

Bologna'sDanNdoyecelebrates with the trophy after winning the Coppa Italia

Forest explore move for £30m attacker

Indeed, it looks as if Ndoye will be lining up next to the much-talked-about Gibbs-White very shortly.

According to Fabrizio Romano via X, the deal is done, as a £35m agreement has been reached between Bologna and Forest, following on from Evangelos Marinakis’ desire to land a standout replacement for Anthony Elanga.

Ndoye isn’t the only addition Forest might be anticipating in the forward areas, however, with a report by the Telegraph now revealing that the top-flight side have ‘discussed’ a potential move for Liverpool hotshot Ben Doak.

The up-and-coming Scotsman would dent the Marinakis bank account even more, with the Reds winger allegedly available for around the £30m mark.

However, this could be a price worth paying if he develops into even more of a blistering performer at the City Ground, with the potential here for Doak to become the club’s next iteration of Gibbs-White in the process.

How Doak can become Forest's next Gibbs-White

Gibbs-White is now a household name in the Premier League, having even been speculated to be on the radar of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City this summer, away from Thomas Franks’ Spurs sniffing about.

However, the 25-year-old hasn’t always been viewed in this glowing light, having struggled to ever get going at former side Wolverhampton Wanderers before embarking on a transformative adventure with Forest.

When plying his trade at Molineux, Gibbs-White would only collect a paltry one goal and one assist in Premier League action. At Forest, though, he is a beast that cannot be tamed, as seen in his ever-growing tally of 45 goals and assists at the difficult level.

Doak will hope, if he leaves Anfield behind shortly, that he can also go on to be as key as the four-time England international is at the City Ground, having been utilised sparingly at Liverpool to date, but he has still managed to show off flashes of his immense quality.

Despite failing to break his goal or assist duck in the senior picture on Merseyside, Doak does have a healthy 11 goals and eight assists next to his name in the youth picture at Anfield. If given more minutes in Nottingham, he could go on to be a star in the first-team scene, away from settling for limited chances under Arne Slot’s wing.

After all, last season also saw the “special” forward – as he’s been glowingly labelled by Jurgen Klopp previously – set the EFL light on loan with Middlesbrough, as seen in his hefty ten goal contributions from 24 Boro clashes.

Coincidentally, before gaining more opportunities at Molineux, Gibbs-White was also viewed as a rising star out on loan with Sheffield United, with a mammoth ten goals and 12 assists coming his way at Bramall Lane.

At the time, he was even hailed as having “the world at his feet” by Blades teammate David McGoldrick, with similarly glowing praise heading Doak’s way too last season from Boro-based commentator Mark Drury, who stated that the Scotsman “looks like a natural” under pressure.

Doak might well finally get his big break in the Premier League with Forest, as excitement levels continue to grow and grow at the City Ground about what next season has in store.

As noted by Football scout Antonio Mango, he truly is a “menace” of a player…

The England international, who has divided opinions among the Arsenal fanbase, will also put pen to paper on a long-term five-year contract – putting an end to Arsenal’s search for a left-winger.

While their pursuit of an out-and-out wide appears has drawn to a close with Madueke’s arrival, Arsenal still want Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze to complement club captain Martin Odegaard in central attacking midfield, according to Sky Sports.

Arsenal have held positive talks with Eze’s camp, but are yet to open formal Palace talks with regard to paying the 27-year-old’s £68 million release clause.

The potential arrivals of both Eze and Madueke would come as a serious statement from Arsenal, but one area of the squad which quite simply needs to be prioritised is at centre-forward.

Arsenal’s lack of ruthlessness in the final third last term, especially when compared to their previous two campaigns, was a major cause for concern and played a serious role in the Gunners’ lacklustre Premier League title challenge.

Viktor Gyokeres only wants to join Arsenal this summer

The consensus is that Berta’s looking towards Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres to solve this problem.

The prolific Sweden international has been unplayable since moving to Portugal two years ago, scoring 97 goals in just 102 total appearances, but his time at Sporting, it’s safe to say, is now over.

The former Coventry City star is actively refusing to return to pre-season training, and Arsenal are in advanced talks to sign Gyokeres, as negotiations rumble on over the final fee.

Now, the ever-reliable Fabrizio Romano has shared an update on the situation.

Viktor Gyokeres celebrating.

Writing for CaughtOffside, he states that Gyokeres only wants to join Arsenal this summer, and he won’t entertain talks with any other club as things stand, so there is little danger of a potential hijack from Ruben Amorim’s Man United.

This comes after personal terms were agreed with Gyokeres days ago, but Sporting’s price is a major sticking point.

Some reports have even claimed that their president, Frederico Varandas, could go back on his promise not to demand the player’s full £85 million release clause – due to the toxic situation involving Gyokeres’ agent (CNN Portugal).

Tottenham now want to sign "combative" £20m La Liga ace ahead of Man Utd

With Thomas Frank looking to make his mark from the off, Tottenham Hotspur are now reportedly battling Manchester United in another transfer race to sign a £20m gem.

Tottenham open summer business with Tel arrival

Although there are likely to be plenty of others who steal the headlines this summer, Mathys Tel has his place in history as the first signing of the Frank era in North London. The young forward has arrived on a permanent deal following a short loan spell in the second-half of last season. Still just 20 years old, the former Bayern Munich man represents the type of talent that could thrive under Frank’s guidance.

The Lilywhites are unlikely to be done there with attacking additions, however, amid recent reports that suggest they’ve opened talks sign Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo.

With Bryan Mbeumo still leaning towards a summer switch to Manchester United, Frank and Tottenham’s attention has seemingly turned towards the Cherries and sealing the arrival of a player who has been on the rise in the South Coast for the last two seasons.

Of course, there will be plenty of frustration if they miss out on Mbeumo – especially given how Frank got the best out of the Brentford star during their time together in West London – but Semenyo very much represents an ideal alternative.

The Mbeumo saga may not be the last time that Spurs and Manchester United do battle in the transfer window, either. Reports are now suggesting that both clubs are interested in the same midfield gem.

Tottenham battling Man Utd to sign £20m Agoume

According to reports in Spain, Tottenham are now battling Man Utd to sign Lucien Agoume from Sevilla this summer. The young midfielder is reportedly available for just £20m amid Sevilla’s financial troubles and could be destined for the Premier League one way or another in the coming months.

It’s easy to see why two of the Premier League’s so-called big six teams are interested in Agoume this summer. U23 scout Antonio Mango was full of praise for the 23-year-old in his assessment, going on to describe him as “combative” and “extremely well-rounded”.

If they lose out on Mbeumo to Manchester United, then Tottenham should look to exact instant revenge by signing Agoume ahead of the Red Devils this summer. What could reportedly help their battle to do exactly that is the fact that they have Champions League football to offer, whilst Manchester United, of course, do not.

He’d be an interesting addition.

It would be quite the moment if Spurs’ Europa League victory over the Red Devils saw them hand those at Old Trafford another defeat away from the pitch in the coming months.
