Hayden and Hussey to put Australia first

Matthew Hayden and Michael Hussey have both confirmed that Australia’s tour match in India in early October will take precedence over their potential involvement in the Champions League. Their comments are in contrast to the claim of IS Bindra, a member of the Indian Premier League (IPL) governing council, who said the pair would play for their IPL team, Chennai Super Kings, even though the Champions League clashes with Australia’s tour of India.Only one warm-up match is scheduled, to take place from October 2 to 5, before the first Test in Bangalore, which begins on October 9. Australia will have just been to the Champions Trophy in Pakistan, provided they do not pull out, and their players will be desperate for a lengthy hit-out ahead of such a major Test series.Hayden said his IPL contract left no doubt that Australia’s match would be his sole concern. “The rule is simple on this one,” Hayden told the . “If we are playing for Australia in any form our decision will be to honour that commitment first. There are no grey areas here.”For Hussey, playing for Chennai appears to be his third priority. He has already confirmed that he would prefer to represent his home state Western Australia, who have qualified for the Champions League as one of the two top Twenty20 teams in Australia’s domestic tournament.Although he would have reluctantly accepted that his contract gave Chennai precedence over Western Australia, the issue will probably be irrelevant in any case. The has reported that Hussey told team officials on Sunday that he expected to be playing in the tour match and not in the Champions League.

Everton monitoring Sean Longstaff

Rafa Benitez has plenty of work to undertake if Everton want to be considered a threat for the top six this season.

At the moment, it looks like they will fall into another campaign of mediocrity with a flutter of bargain signings in the window.

On the chalkboard

Unfortunately for the Toffees, their spending in the window doesn’t look set to get much greater.

They’ve been linked with a £3m move for Royal Antwerp full-back Aurelio Buta while another player on their radar is Sean Longstaff.

That’s according to The Athletic who claim that Newcastle’s potential signing of Joe Willock could lead to his departure from St James’ Park.

The report suggests that his future is now in question with Everton monitoring the £13.5m-rated gem’s situation.

Longstaff has come through the ranks at Newcastle and is a defensive midfielder by trade. That being said, he is yet to live up to the immense potential expected of him when Benitez was in the north-east.

Speaking about the 23-year-old in January 2019, the Spaniard said: “(Sean Longstaff) has the potential. He went on loan, came back and did well. We had a lot of teams asking about him for this January transfer window. (Longstaff) is a good player, a good professional, and he is working really hard.”

Although his tally of zero goals from last season dictates he wouldn’t offer much in the final third, he could be an upgrade on Tom Davies.

A fellow academy graduate, Davies is also yet to live up to his true potential and has been linked with the exit door as a consequence.

Longstaff, therefore, could act as a direct replacement for the Merseyside outfit.

In completing 1.4 tackles per match in the Premier League season, he usurped the Everton midfielder’s tally of 1.2. The Newcastle gem was down on Davies’ interceptions but had a slightly better pass success rate.

Furthermore, he had a greater impact in the offensive phases of play, registering more key passes and more shots per match.

Longstaff is by no means outstanding but like new signings Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray, he’d be a useful squad option for the manager.

If Davies does indeed leave then Benitez must move to secure his signature.

LFC fans bemoan Loris Karius training photo

A number of Liverpool supporters have been reacting negatively to an image of goalkeeper Loris Karius back training with the Reds again.

The German’s last competitive game for Liverpool was a devastating one, with two awful errors coming his way in the 2018 Champions League final.

The mistakes almost single-handedly led to Jurgen Klopp’s side losing 3-1 on that fateful night in Kyiv, with Alisson signed later that year.

Karius has been shipped out on loan a number of times since, enduring spells at Besiktas and Union Berlin and seemingly having no future at Anfield.

Liverpool are now back in pre-season training and the 28-year-old is present with his teammates in Austria, with a photo of him between the sticks shared by Anything Liverpool on Twitter on Tuesday.

Sri Lanka forced to make changes for second Test

Seven days ago, Sri Lanka were preparing for the opening Test in high spirits: the batsman had the luxury of having spent time in the middle during the two warm-up games, and the fast bowlers were looking forward to plying their trade on the more

Charlie Austin14-Nov-2002Seven days ago, Sri Lanka were preparing for the opening Test in high spirits: the batsman had the luxury of having spent time in the middle during the two warm-up games, and the fast bowlers were looking forward to plying their trade on the more responsive pitches typical in South Africa. But a week is a long time in international cricket, and after a crushing innings-and-64-run defeat at Wanderers, they have now lost their services of their leader, Sanath Jayasuriya, for the second Test at Centurion that starts on Friday. Sri Lanka will thus be taking the field without Jayasuriya for the first time in a Test match since 1999.Jayasuriya damaged ligaments in his right ankle whilst warming up for net practice playing football on Tuesday and is also in doubt for at least the first part of the one-day series that follows soon after this game.Muttiah Muralitharan, their premier bowler, is also struggling with a hernia, but, fortunately for Sri Lanka, he is currently pain-free and, despite a swollen lower abdomen, is expected to play a full part in the Test before undertaking surgery.Jayasuriya’s injury means that left-hander Jehan Mubarak, the only other specialist batsman available in a 17-man squad laden with fast bowlers, willplay his second Test match and open the innings with stand-in captain MarvanAtapattu.Russel Arnold, who bagged a pair at Wanderers as opener, edging into the slip cordon in both innings, will drop down into the middle order.Sri Lanka are also considering a change to their bowling attack. Left-armerRuchira Perera was banned from bowling in the first innings at Wanderers after persistently running onto the danger area and the management are reluctant to risk a repeat performance at Centurion. One option is to pick wicket-keeper Prassana Jayawardene to take the load off Kumara Sangakkara at number three and go into the match with only four frontline fast bowlers. That would add depth to a frail looking lower-order,but the management have all but discounted such a move, preferring insteadthe option of four seamers and one spinner. Thus Chamila Lakshitha Gamage, a right-arm fast bowler who claimed a wicket with his first ball in Test cricket when he made his debut against Bangladesh in July, is set to play his second Test.Sri Lanka will, at least, be pleased to see that the groundsman at Centurionhas ignored the South Africa’s preference for a well-grassed, quick surface. The mowers were pressed into action on Wednesday afternoon, and the result isa brown, flat looking pitch that promises a fair contest between bat andball. However, no matter how the pitch behaves, acting captain Atapattu, taking charge for the first time in a Test, is looking for his team to learn from the mistakes made at Wanderers.”We did so many things wrong in the first Test and we are trying to put themright," said Atapattu. "We have discussed where we went wrong and we will try out utmost to correct that in the next match."As a batsman, once you get a start you have to go on, especially in conditions like these which we are not very used to hopefully we will put it right this time."He doesn’t expect it to be easy, however. "We know what we are up against and the task that we face. Whatever the pitch we have to do the basics right."And he doesn’t want the players dwell over the loss of Jayasuriya. “It is agreat loss, but we have to understand that these things are going to happenfrom time to time. We have got to keep our heads high and perform.”A frontrunner for the captaincy should Jayasuriya decide to hand over thereins after the World Cup, Atapattu is looking forward to the challenge of leading the side. "It is a great privilege to captain your country and I enjoy it. It is a bit different for me half way through the tour but hopefully I willhandle it well."Sri Lanka (likely): Marvan Atapattu (captain), Jehan Mubarak, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jaywardene, Russel Arnold, Hashan Tillakaratne, Hasantha Fernando, Chaminda Vaas, Dilhara Fernando, Chamila Gamage Lakshitha, Muttiah Muralitharan

Rangers: Gerrard an admirer of Kevin Nisbet

According to The Daily Record, Glasgow Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is an admirer of Kevin Nisbet, although the Gers would need to sell one of their strikers to make a move for the 24-year-old.

The Lowdown: Gers set for a busy summer

The Gers’ Premiership success last term means they will be both on the lookout for new players to boost their Champions League chances and will also be wary of losing star performers after their impressive displays during 2020/21.

With Alfredo Morelos heavily linked with a move away from Ibrox this summer (Antena 1), the Gers may be eyeing another centre-forward.

The Latest: Gerrard likes Nesbit

Hibernian striker Nisbet is attracting interest from Spartak Moscow and Krasnodar, as per The Daily Record.

The report added that Gerrard is an admirer of the 24-year-old Scotland international, but the Gers will not make a move unless they sell one of their current forwards.

The Verdict: Impressive forward

Although Nisbet does not play for one of Scotland’s two biggest clubs, he has impressed over the past three seasons, scoring 75 goals in all competitions during that time (Transfermarkt). His performances earned him a spot in the Scotland squad for Euro 2020, and he even got himself on the scoresheet in a 2-2 draw with Netherlands prior to the tournament.

As per The Daily Record, the Gers would need to sell first if they were to move for the £2.7m-valued Nisbet (Transfermarkt) as they already have Morelos, Fashion Sakala, Cedric Itten, Kemar Roofe and Jermain Defoe in their squad already. However, with the Colombian attracting interest from Porto, a berth may open, and Nisbet would be a good option to fill it.

Jacobs drops Newcastle takeover claim

Ben Jacobs has dropped a claim on the potential takeover of Newcastle United as news emerged involving Amanda Staveley.

The Lowdown: Staveley’s letter

As per Sky News, Staveley – the businesswoman and head of PCP Capital Partners who is part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) group looking to take over at St. James’ Park – has written a letter to Tracey Crouch, the MP leading a government-commissioned review of football’s governance.

In this letter, she has accused the Premier League of a ‘closely guarded lack of transparency’ ahead of their upcoming arbitration case over the failed takeover deal between Mike Ashley and the consortium.

She also argued that the administrator of the Premier League has raised ‘an effective shield against public scrutiny’, and admitted that there is ‘real urgency’ with regards to trying to get their bid over the line.

Jamie Reuben, the wealthy businessman who is also part of the consortium, is thought to be supportive of Staveley’s letter.

The Latest: Jacobs reacts

Jacobs, a sports journalist who has been closely following all of the latest developments in the takeover saga, has since taken to Twitter to give his overall reaction to the letter which was released.

He claims that both that the letter from Staveley and the statement from Newcastle calling for the arbitration process to be made public ‘can be seen as either confident and confrontational or just a little desperate’.

Jacobs added that Staveley ‘will need a cordial working relationship’ with the Premier League if the takeover succeeds, meaning that her criticism at this stage of the process is ‘significant’.

The Verdict: Significant indeed

As Jacobs points out, it certainly seems significant that Staveley has felt the need to send this letter so close to the start of the arbitration hearing, especially since she will need the support of the Premier League if the result is to go in her favour.

If the Tyneside club end up winning the case, then it may be difficult for them to get the Premier League on their side, given that both their statement and Staveley’s letter have effectively criticised them for their handling of the process so far.

Nonetheless, a solution will have to be worked out with the top flight if the Magpies are successful, and the sooner the better, so that the takeover process can be accelerated.

West Ham exit development involving Anderson

According to a report by TUTTOmercatoWEB, Serie A giants SS Lazio could now make approach for West Ham United midfielder Felipe Anderson ‘in days’.

The Lowdown: Anderson’s woes…

The Brazilian couldn’t contribute in West Ham’s journey to Europa League qualification with manager David Moyes shipping him out on loan to FC Porto for the entirety of 2020/2021.

Over his temporary spell in Portugal, it’s safe to say he endured a nightmare at the Estádio do Dragão.

Indeed, the 28-year-old started just one Liga NOS match all season for the club whilst playing a meagre 128 minutes in total (WhoScored).

This has lead to reports linking him with a move away from West Ham as news emerges of another club now interested in the player.

The Latest: Lazio could now approach ‘in days’…

As per news outlet TUTTOmercatoWEB, Lazio could now make an approach for Anderson ‘in days’ as a ‘concrete lead’ emerges.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest/” title=”West Ham latest!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

New boss Maurizio Sarri is looking to start a fresh era at the Stadio Olimpico and is subsequently eyeing new signings for the Italian capital club.

He ‘continues to push’ for Napoli winger and Italy international star Lorenzo Insigne, but he is a ‘complicated option’ given his current salary.

Anderson, on the other hand, is far more realistic and Lazio could make contact in days to discuss the ‘feasibility of his return’.

The Verdict: Time to go…

Moyes reportedly has three signing priorities for West Ham and it is arguably wise to move Anderson on and recuperate as much as money as possible through outgoings.

Striking targets like Tammy Abraham could cost as much as £40m and West Ham now face a fight to sign Jesse Lingard on a permanent deal from Manchester United.

Duje Caleta-Car is said to be on the radar of West Ham as they also eye a new centre-back, but if the club wish to make these signings a reality, shifting deadwood is crucial in this climate.

Celtic: West Ham set to sign Armstrong Okoflex

West Ham look set to sign Celtic attacker Armstrong Okoflex, according to the Glasgow Evening Times.

The Lowdown: Okoflex’s Celtic career

Okoflex, who can play anywhere across the front three, joined Celtic from Arsenal back in 2018.

However, the 19-year-old struggled to force his way into the Hoops’ senior squad and appeared to mock the club last year due to his lack of game time on Tik Tok.

His two senior Celtic appearances came last season after multiple members of Neil Lennon’s side were forced to isolate following Christopher Jullien’s positive result, leaving the Hoops with the bare bones.

It now seems as if the attacker is now set to leave Celtic Park for good.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-6/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Okoflex in London; Two-year deal

The Glasgow Evening Times shared the story on Wednesday afternoon, claiming the youngster was in London to finalise a move with the Hammers.

David Moyes is a big fan of Okoflex, who looks set to sign a contract with the Premier League side this month.

Mark Hendry was the reporter behind the Glasgow Evening Times’ story, and he added some more information on a proposed deal on Twitter.

“Okoflex looks like he’ll sign a two-year deal at West Ham, with a one-year extension option.”

The Verdict: Will it prove to be a big loss?

Okoflex never got the chance to impress with the Hoops at senior level in a full-strength squad. For whatever reason, it hasn’t worked out for the youngster up in Scotland, but Moyes clearly thinks there is potential with Okoflex, with the Hammers offering a two-year deal.

Over the next few years, we’ll see if the Hoops will regret not giving the youngster more of a chance at first-team level.

Should he go on and break into Moyes’ plans at the London Stadium, Celtic may well end up kicking themselves. Only time will tell.
