Derbyshire sign Matt Lineker for 2011

Derbyshire have signed left-handed batsman Matt Lineker on a Summer Contract for the 2011 season.Lineker, 25, has played in the Second XI Trophy for both Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire and has performed consistently in the ECB Premier League in recent years, scoring 800 runs in 20 innings at 44.44, including two centuries, in the league in 2010.”Matt has been a standout performer on the Derbyshire Premier League scene for several years now and he deserves this opportunity to show what he can do in county cricket,” said John Morris, Derbyshire’s head of cricket. “If Matt can make a success of this opportunity he will be a fine example for other local players to follow.”

Leeds: Tony Mowbray confirms Ian Poveda talks

Blackburn Rovers boss Tony Mowbray has confirmed he has spoken to Leeds chiefs regarding Ian Poveda, The Lancashire Telegraph report.

The Lowdown: Poveda’s return from injury

Poveda, who Victor Orta signed for Leeds back in 2020, made the move to Ewood Park in the summer on a season-long loan deal. However, the 22-year-old has been out of action since November after requiring ankle surgery.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-updates/” title=”Latest Leeds United updates!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-04-02T155252Z_391313781_UP1EI421841M9_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-SOU-REPORT.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

He has recovered back at Leeds’ Thorp Arch training base but did go and watch Rovers at Ewood Park on Saturday afternoon against Blackpool, suggesting a return to the second-tier side could now be on the cards.

The Latest: Mowbray’s comments

The Lancashire Telegraph relayed comments from Mowbray regarding Poveda on Thursday. The Rovers boss admitted he has ‘spoke to Leeds’ about the possibility of Poveda returning to the club for the Championship run-in.

He also confirmed that Blackburn have continued to pay their contribution to Poveda’s salary and are looking to bring him back next week before Leeds’ trip to Crystal Palace.

The Verdict: Caution needed

Poveda is back in training but hasn’t had any game time, so Leeds, Blackburn and the winger need to be careful over the coming weeks.

It’s easy to see why Rovers want Poveda back at Ewood Park as they seek a playoff place, however, Leeds know the risk of bringing a player back too early from injury.

Patrick Bamford now looks set to miss the rest of the season following his setback, so the club won’t want the same thing to happen for Poveda.

Spurs plotting out-of-window Barker move

According to Football Insider journalist Wayne Veysey, Tottenham Hotspur are in a race with Leicester City to sign non-league striker sensation Fin Barker.

The Lowdown: Rising star…

The 18-year-old has apparently caught the eye of top tier scouts up and down the country for his sensational form at current club Mickleover FC in the Northern Premier League Premier Division.

Chiefs from English top flight clubs have been alerted to Barker’s potential as well as Championship sides, with Nottingham Forest among those taking a firm interest.

Both Premier League and clubs from the EFL are able to sign anyone from outside the professional leagues at any time of year, even beyond a conventional transfer window.

The Latest: Tottenham plotting move…

According to Veysey and Football Insider, Spurs and Leicester are now ‘plotting moves’ ahead of the summer for Barker.

As well as this, both sides are tipped as possible favourites to sign the prolific striker given they can apparently make an offer ‘beyond the level’ of most Premier League sides.

The Verdict: Intriguing update…

It appears Spurs’ scouts are hard at work behind-the-scenes again as they unearth more potentially fruitful talent for the growing Hotspur Way group of exciting youngsters.

Barker could certainly come as one of them if Tottenham sign him outside of January, especially going by his 18-goal haul for Mickleover this season.

Those strikes come after only just making his debut in October, perhaps evidence of his sky high potential.

Celtic: Hoops make another Mehdi Ghayedi approach

Celtic are not giving up on their pursuit of Shabab Al-Ahli forward Mehdi Ghayedi and want a move finalised before the winter break ends, Varzesh Seh report.

The Lowdown: Attacking additions

The Hoops have already bolstered their attacking ranks with the acquisition of Daizen Maeda, while young starlet Johnny Kenny has joined as a more long-term prospect.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-copy/” title=”Celtic updates!! (Copy)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Ange Postecoglou also wants to make Jota’s loan move a permanent one, with the Hoops now eyeing another wide forward.

Ghayedi, labelled as an ‘extraordinary killer’ finisher by @ADSportsTV, can play anywhere across the front three and has scored 41 goals during his career so far.

The Latest: Another approach

Reports earlier this month suggested that Celtic have had a bid turned down for Ghayedi.

Now, Varzesh Seh claim that Postecoglou is desperate for the 23-year-old to join the club during the winter break, with the Hoops making another approach.

The winter break comes to an end for Celtic in just over 72 hours on Monday when they take on Hibernian at Parkhead, so this one could move pretty quickly if the manager wants it done by then.

The Verdict: Interesting…

Postecoglou was planning to raid untapped markets this month, and it seems as if the Hoops are looking in the UAE with Ghayedi.

The Iran international only joined Shabab Al-Ahli in the summer and is under contract until 2026, so it could take a tempting offer for the Dubai club to sell.

Transfermarkt have a probability of a move to Celtic Park at 76%, so even though Postecoglou recently slammed transfer lies in the media, a move for Ghayedi could be one to monitor before the end of the month.

Newcastle United suffer Callum Wilson setback

Craig Hope has delivered a major injury update on Newcastle United star Callum Wilson, and the impact it could have on the club’s plans for the January transfer window.

What’s the story?

Writing initially on Twitter, he said: “Callum Wilson will have further scans this week to determine full extent & nature of calf/Achilles injury that could change NUFC transfer priorities. Hierarchy hoping for good news but early thoughts of 6 weeks have made way for concern it could be longer.”

Then, in a follow-up article for The Daily Mail, he added: “Sportsmail understands they are yet to determine exactly how long the 29-year-old will be absent but further tests will give a more definitive timeframe and what treatment is required.

“There is also a danger the injury has affected his Achilles, and the prognosis will have a significant bearing on the club’s transfer business this month.”

Big blow for Newcastle

The former Bournemouth striker has been a rare shining light for Newcastle over the past year or so and marked his debut campaign for the Magpies last season with 12 goals in just 26 Premier League games despite struggling for consistent action through injury.

This season has been a similar story for the England international, scoring six goals in 15 top-flight outings but spending the early part of the campaign out with a hamstring injury.

The £18m-rated Wilson has earned rave reviews in his time playing in the Premier League though, with Howe, who of course managed him at Bournemouth too, particularly fulsome in his praise of the centre-forward.

The Magpies boss said: “He is an outstanding player with unique attributes for us. He has that ability to run in behind and he’s got the work ethic off the ball and, of course, he knows where the goal is.”

News that Wilson’s injury could be worse than initially feared is sure to come as devastating news for Newcastle and the club’s fans, who have pinned their hopes on him to be the man to lead them away from the prospect of relegation.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United have held talks with this director of football candidate…

Rajasthan reveal global team deal

Plans to create the first global sport alliance were revealed at Lord’s with Rajasthan Royals leading the innovation

Andrew Miller08-Feb-2010Plans to create the first global sport alliance were revealed at Lord’s with Rajasthan Royals leading the innovation as they joined forces with Hampshire, Cape Cobras and Trinidad and Tobago to form a worldwide Twenty20 brand. The Australian domestic Twenty20 champions, Victoria Bushrangers, are also believed to be close to confirming their participation in the venture.Shane Warne, captain of the Rajasthan Royals and a former captain of Hampshire and Victoria, was in London to announce the plans alongside Manoj Badale, the London-based businessman who part-owns the IPL franchise, and officials from Hampshire, the Cobras and Trinidad and Tobago. All of the teams within the deal will henceforth carry the “Royals” moniker, which means that Hampshire Royals (formerly Hawks) will be treading on the toes of their Twenty20 Cup rivals, Worcestershire Royals. The two counties are understood to have already been in discussions.”This is a major innovation in world sport, and it represents a great opportunity for the clubs,” Badale said, “but also an opportunity for fans and sponsors to be part of something totally unique and exciting. The response that we have had from fans overseas over the past two seasons has convinced us to expand our ambition.”The four other domestic teams involved in the tie-up will now play under the Royals name in their respective Twenty20 tournaments and the aim is to grow the brand around the world to give them almost year-round coverage. For the players it could create the chance to ply their trade in the other domestic competitions and opens up the option of talent-sharing between sides. The concept is still in the planning stage, and the finer details are yet to be firmed up, including Victoria’s participation. But Badale confirmed that the intention would ultimately be to roll out the brand to other existing Twenty20 markets in New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.”I’m so excited by this,” Warne said. “It would be nice to be 20 years younger. I am delighted to be part of this new innovation, and I am excited by what we can achieve, given what we have already achieved. Yet again, the Royals are leading the way. It is bonus that clubs with which I have such deep affection are so involved.”Victoria remain undecided

Tony Dodemaide, the chief executive of Cricket Victoria, has said the state is still considering its potential involvement in the Rajasthan Royals plan. “We have received a proposal from the Royals representatives and the concept is an interesting one but we’ve made no commitments at all,” he said.
Dodemaide said if Victoria did join the group, the Bushrangers name would be retained in the longer formats of the game. “That’s not in the mix at all,” he said. “It’s specifically around Twenty20. There is no suggestion that our traditional arms of cricket, our Sheffield Shield and Ford Ranger Cup teams will be anything other than Victorian Bushrangers.”

Organisers said they were looking to stage the first Royals 2020 “festival” in July during a window in the English season, with Lord’s – the venue for the launch – a possible base. Matches in either Australia or South Africa during the Christmas holiday period would then follow in December, with a third tournament earmarked for the Middle East or Jaipur in early 2011. This prospect will invariably lead to more concerns about player burn-out, amid overcrowded schedules.”I think at international level there’s no doubt that they’ve got scheduling problems,” said Sean Morris, the chief executive of Rajasthan. “But I think that Twenty20 cricket is becoming more and more important to the international player. He plays very little of it at the moment, and we want to fit alongside the domestic calendars. There are one or two windows in that, and we don’t want to conflict and compete with them.””When we talk of festivals, it’s about the fun aspect, the enjoyment of Twenty20 cricket,” said Warne. “As far as the cricket goes, if I’m bowling to Dimitri Mascarenhas and he’s playing for Hampshire, I promise you it will be competitive. These will be competitive games that are fun to watch, with a festival atmosphere. Whether it’s with cheerleaders, fireworks or music, it’s all about the fans having fun.””The opportunity to be part of a global brand is a unique one across all sports,” added Morris. “And it will enable us to take advantage of the changing landscape in cricket, not least in the areas of marketing and talent development.””There are plenty potential pitfalls,” said Badale. “Firstly, we are going to have to ensure we don’t fall outside the regulations of the domestic leagues and the cricket boards. Secondly, we have to try not to do too much too quickly. People keep asking us “What is it?” “It’s” pretty simple. We’re going to have the same kit, over time we’re going to have the same name, and we’re going to play each other a couple times a year. There are risks, but business is all about risk and return.”

Everton could sign Kulusevski in January

Everton have already made two signings during the first week of the January transfer window, but they could now be set to make another signing as they are rumoured to have joined the chase to sign one in-demand player from Europe.

What’s the word?

According to reports from TuttoMercatoWeb, the Toffees are interested in Juventus forward Dejan Kulusevski.

The report suggests that the Serie A club are interested in selling the 21-year-old in order to raise funds for a striker this month, with Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur also said to be interested in securing his signature.

The £27.5m-rated gem was hailed by former Bianconeri team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo, who said: “He is a great talent. He will help us to win and achieve incredible things. I really like to see him, he has a great potential, and he’s an excellent player.”

Everton are set to compete with the other two Premier League clubs to get a deal done for Kulusevski but are currently trying to build transfer funds in order to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations.

Imagine him & Doucoure

Despite Everton struggling to get results in the Premier League this season with just five wins so far, they do have an appeal with a number of fine attacking players in their squad, which could be the element with which to tempt Kulusevski with a possible move to Merseyside.

According to One Versus One, the Sweden international has the highest one-touch pass accuracy in Serie A and is in the top ten players for completing his passes into the final third. That could be a huge advantage to the attacking line at Goodison Park, as this top-level accuracy in front of goal could secure the opportunity for more chances to be created and, as a result, more goals to be scored.

If he were to join Benitez’s side, he would likely play on the right-hand side of midfield alongside Abdoulaye Doucoure, and the duo could form a deadly partnership in creating chances for a newly-returned Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with the potential for the team being more prolific in front of goal, as scoring has been an issue this season.

Everton had been without Calvert-Lewin since the start of September, while Richarlison has also suffered two bouts of injury, so it’s no surprise that the goal scoring hasn’t come naturally to the Toffees this season. However, with the return of the England striker and more potential additions in January like Kulusevski, the Toffees could be back in the top half of the table in no time.

McGowan raises Carter-Vickers doubt

It’s difficult to envisage Celtic shelling out £10million to sign Cameron Carter-Vickers permanently, journalist Stephen McGowan says.

The lowdown

Centre-back Carter-Vickers is currently on a season-long loan from English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.

He’s started 10 of Celtic’s 15 SPFL matches to date and all five of their Europa League fixtures.

According to WhoScored, he’s been the Hoops’ fifth-best performer in the league so far.

But Record Sport claim they will have to shell out an eight-figure sum to make the loan permanent.

That would break Celtic’s transfer record, which currently stands at the £9.27million they paid for Odsonne Edouard back in 2018/19.

The latest

McGowan, The Scottish Daily Mail’s chief football writer, says Carter-Vickers would be a ‘quality’ long-term addition, but he doesn’t expect Celtic to meet Spurs’ demands.

“I maybe just wonder if a Carter-Vickers and a Jota, just those couple of pieces of quality they should prioritise rather than in gambling on the Ismaila Soro-type settings,” he said on Clyde One Superscoreboard, via Celts Are Here.

“But £10m? Again, I repeat, I don’t know if that figure’s accurate or not. I really don’t.

“I think that’s a bit rich, and I couldn’t really see Celtic paying that anyway.”

The verdict

Carter-Vickers is ‘doing really well’ at Parkhead and has established himself as a ‘key player’, Paddy Kenny says.

But will Celtic be willing to break records to keep him? They did turn a near-£14million profit transfer-wise in the summer, and they’ve paid big money for defenders before: Christopher Jullien cost them £7.2million in 2019.

And there’s also a possibility that Spurs struggle to offload Carter-Vickers for the stated price tag and agree to compromise. Indeed, Danny Mills has told the Hoops to make an effort to ‘renegotiate’.

Perhaps there is a deal to be done.
