Chigumbura wants to step down as captain

Allrounder Elton Chigumbura has expressed his wish to step down as Zimbabwe captain, ESPNcricinfo understands

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Apr-2011Allrounder Elton Chigumbura has expressed his wish to step down as Zimbabwe captain, ESPNcricinfo understands. He is currently involved in talks with Zimbabwe Cricket and a final decision will be made in the coming week.”He has said that he wants to step down,” a source familiar with the issue said. “But talks are currently underway. He is talking to a board official and the coach as well about it. A final decision is expected to be announced on Tuesday.”Chigumbura, who took over from Prosper Utseya in May 2010, had mixed results in his tenure as captain but his previous assignment, the 2011 World Cup, proved a disappointment for Zimbabwe, who failed to beat any of the Test-playing teams. His own form, with both bat and ball, has failed to live up to expectations; he’s averaged 21.06 with the bat and 158.50 with the ball in 20 ODIs as captain.A report in , a Zimbabwe-based newspaper, suggested that Chigumbura’s decision was final. The paper quoted Chigumbura as saying in an interview, “First and foremost I am selected to score runs and get wickets. This is something I have not been doing to the best of my abilities of late, especially the last three months. They have been difficult with all the demands of the captaincy job.”I have thought long and hard about the job since my return from the World Cup and I have consulted my family and friends about it. While some still think I should have stayed on others agreed with me that I needed to concentrate on my own game and let somebody else lead the team.”I think I will be more useful in the team if I regain my form and I know having relieved myself of this burden I will get back to my best.”Among the highlights for Chigumbura as captain were victories against India and Sri Lanka in a triangular series, in which Zimbabwe finished runners-up, at home. Zimbabwe are currently serving a self-imposed isolation from Test cricket but are expected to end it in June when they play Bangladesh.

Rangers handed Sam Johnstone boost

A big summer transfer claim has emerged that will impact Rangers’ plans for the upcoming window at Ibrox…

What’s the talk?

Sky Sports journalist Rob Dorsett has confirmed that Gers’ transfer target Sam Johnstone is set to leave his current club at the end of the season.

Gio van Bronckhorst and Ross Wilson are reportedly interested in bringing the shot-stopper to Glasgow and they will now be able to snap him up for nothing if they can win the race for his signature, amid stiff competition from other teams.

Dorsett Tweeted: “#mufc and #thfc to battle it out for the signature of goalkeeper Sam Johnstone in the summer. Johnstone won’t sign a new #wba contract, when it expires at the end of the season, as he seeks a return to the Premier League. Bruce said on Saturday he expects him to leave.”

Good news for Rangers

This is good news for the club for multiple reasons.

Firstly, this claim means that the Gers will not have to pay a penny in transfer fees for Johnstone. His deal with West Brom runs out later this year and he will become a free agent, which means that no club will have to deal with the Baggies to agree a fee.

The only concern will be his wages, but the lack of a transfer fee will, hopefully, offset any issues with budgeting for his salary. This, therefore, is why the club will be buzzing with this update as it lowers the potential cost of a deal for the England international.

It is also great news for Rangers as they are in need of a new goalkeeper to replace Allan McGregor next season. The 40-year-old has made four errors, three directly leading to goals, in the Premiership this season – costing van Bronckhorst’s side vital points against the likes of Ross County and Motherwell, making two direct errors in the former and being beaten at his near post for the equaliser in the latter.

Meanwhile, in the Premier League last time out, Johnstone made zero errors directly leading to goals as he averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.03. He is also 11 years younger than the current Gers number one and this means that he could be the first choice between the sticks at Ibrox for many, many, years to come – if they are able to bring him through the door.

It is now down to Wilson to make sure he can capitalise on the Englishman’s availability to snap him up ahead of the other interested parties this summer…

Newcastle shut down over Issa Diop move

Newcastle United have seen their efforts to sign West Ham United defender Issa Diop shut down, with the Frenchman now set to remain at the London Stadium.

What’s the story?

Reports earlier on transfer deadline day had suggested that the Magpies had put in a first bid for the centre-back, but it now appears that any January deal is dead in the water.

According to RMC Sport (via Sport Witness), that offer from Eddie Howe’s side’s for the defender has been flatly rejected, and they have been told that the Irons will not be entertaining any more offers for the 25-year-old as they simply don’t want to sell him in the January transfer window.

Howe will be gutted

While the signings of Bruno Guimaraes and Hugo Ekitike (if it gets confirmed later) are likely to be the most eye-catching for Newcastle fans given the prices involved, it’s the signing of someone like Diop which would have really reassured Howe heading into the second half of the Premier League season.

Defence has been a key area of concern for the Magpies with a total of 43 goals conceded already, and bringing in someone who is still relatively young at 25 but with ample Premier League experience to his name in Diop would have been the perfect antidote for that.

Indeed, while the Tyneside club press on with the signings of a striker in Ekitike, and have even been linked with a money-spinning move for a winger in Atletico Madrid’s Yannick Carrasco, it’s Diop who they really needed.

Speaking earlier this month when reports emerged linking the Magpies to another defender in AS Monaco’s Benoit Badiashille, Noel Whelan said: “Going back to that Watford game, what they’re desperately in need of is centre-halves and Badiashile could fit the bill. They’re making far too many mistakes. The marking is all over the place, there’s no concentration – even in the last minute of the game.

“They’ve got to look at these crucial minutes and think about how many points they’ve dropped just through bad defending. Centre half has got to be the priority for Newcastle, fixing the spine of that team.

“It’s all very well serving Chris Wood with these wing-backs, but he will have to score three or four goals every game for Newcastle to have a chance of picking up three points.”

As Whelan says, while it’s all well and good that the Magpies might have signed a new striker in Wood – and now potentially another one in Ekitike – it will all be for nothing if they don’t bring in reinforcements at the other end of the pitch.

Newcastle need to become much more stronger at the back, and Diop’s arrival would certainly have helped in that regard.

It’s why Howe will surely be gutted at the news that the West Ham defender will now be staying put, and another setback for a Magpies side who have been desperately searching to sign a new centre-back all month with so many names being linked.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United have had a BID ACCEPTED for this man..

Celtic: Ange drops Turnbull & Kyogo updates

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has dropped a fresh update on the condition of both David Turnbull and Kyogo Furuhashi.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments cited by Football Scotland, the 56-year-old Bhoys boss suggested that, despite including both the attacking midfielder and centre-forward in his Europa Conference League 25-man squad, the duo are still some way off making a return to first-team action, although the Greek-Australian coach did go on to state that the 22-year-old is a couple of weeks ahead of the Japan international in his recovery.

And, with The Scotsman reporting towards the end of December that the Scotland international would be ruled out for two months, this would appear to suggest that, if Turnbull remains on course in his recovery, the midfielder could be in line to make a return towards the beginning of next month, while the 27-year-old striker will be out until around the middle of March.

When asked what the stricken duo’s inclusion in Celtic’s Conference League squad meant, Postecoglou said: “Just read into it that if they’re fit and available they’ll be in the squad. Dave is obviously closer because his injury happened before Kyogo so he’s probably two or three weeks ahead of Kyogo.

“I haven’t put timeframes on it because I could end up being wildly out, but Dave is working hard, Kyogo is working hard. I expect to see Dave before Kyogo, but in terms of Europe, they’re both in the squad because, hopefully, they are available at some time for us.”

Fans will be gutted

Considering the fact that Celtic have some extremely important fixtures coming up in February, not least the doubleheader against Bodo/Glimt in the qualifying round of the Europa Conference League, the news that both Turnbull and Kyogo appear to still be some way off making returns from their respective hamstring injuries is sure to have left the Parkhead faithful gutted.

Indeed, over Turnbull’s 18 Premiership appearances so far this season, the £5.85m-rated midfielder has been in astonishing form for the Bhoys, having scored five goals, registered four assists and created seven big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 3.7 shots and making a whopping 4.1 key passes – the most of any player in the division – per game.

These returns have seen the £14k-per-week attacker average a rather remarkable SofaScore match rating of 7.87, ranking him as the best player in the top flight of Scottish football.

Meanwhile, over Kyogo’s 14 league outings, the £4.95m-rated centre-forward has also been in deadly form, having bagged eight goals, provided two assists and created four big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 2.1 shots and making 1.1 key passes per fixture – with these metrics seeing the £18k-per-week hitman average a SofaScore match rating of 7.03.

As such, the fact that both Turnbull and Kyogo look set to remain on the sidelines throughout February, as well as potentially a portion of March, is sure to come as a major blow to Postecoglou and his Celtic side, as the duo are undoubtedly two of the 56-year-old’s most talented players at Parkhead.
