Hatfield: Van de Beek would suit Villa

Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield has claimed that Donny van de Beek would be a ‘brilliant’ signing for Aston Villa.

The Lowdown: United struggles

After bursting onto the scene in the Netherlands with Ajax, the 24-year-old’s time at Manchester United so far has been rather unspectacular, starting only four Premier League games last season after making the move from Amsterdam.

The midfielder has appeared for the Red Devils 39 times, scoring only once after arriving in England with 41 goals for Ajax to his name.

His dull debut season at Old Trafford has been followed up with only one appearance each in the Premier League, Champions League and Carabao Cup this term, getting just six minutes of league football so far in 2021/22.

The Latest: Hatfield urges Villa swoop for Van de Beek

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Hatfield has claimed that signing Van de Beek may be on the cards for Villa, who had pursued other creative midfielders such as James Ward-Prowse and Emile Smith Rowe over the summer.

The journalist said: “He’d be fantastic for Villa, he’d be a brilliant signing. But I’m not too sure whether the wages would work out.

“He’ll be on big money at United – although I’m not saying Villa won’t pay big wages because they are willing to hand out wages to the right players.”

The Verdict: Van de Beek could be what Villa need

The £120k-per-week Manchester United midfielder is currently enduring a tough spell in his career, and after a move to Everton failed to materialise in the summer, his time spent sitting on the substitutes’ bench looks set to continue despite the inconsistency of Fred and Scott McTominay.

With Villa using a midfield three and Jacob Ramsey the most creative of those, bringing in a player like Van de Beek would add more creativity to Smith’s team and could be exactly what they are seeking after missing out on Ward-Prowse and Smith Rowe.

His wages could be an issue, as Hatfield pointed out, but if Van de Beek continues to be overlooked at Old Trafford, that could see a decrease in his wage demands if the right offer is made from someone like Villa.

Celtic: Furuhashi and McGregor not far away

Celtic duo Kyogo Furuhashi and Callum McGregor are close to making a Hoops return, The Scottish Sun report.

The Lowdown: Hoops’ struggles without the pair

Celtic have struggled in recent weeks, with Furuhashi missing the last five games with a knee injury and McGregor the last four due to a hamstring problem.

The Hoops have managed just two wins from their last five, with defeats to Real Betis and Livingston without the duo.

However, it appears as if they could both be edging closer to full Parkhead returns.

The Latest: Postecoglou’s comments

Postecoglou was talking to the media, relayed by The Scottish Sun, following Celtic’s 1-1 draw with Dundee United on Sunday.

He provided a positive update on summer signing Giorgos Giakoumakis, revealing a scan on an injured calf came back positive and he could make his debut against Aberdeen on the weekend.

Postecoglou also addressed Furuhashi and McGregor’s injuries, saying:

“Kyogo isn’t too far away and so is Cal.”

The Verdict: Big news

Furuhashi has been brilliant since he arrived in Glasgow, scoring seven times in nine appearances, while captain McGregor was an ever-present prior to his knock.

Having the pair back, you’d expect, would be a huge boost going forward, and they could help the Hoops get back on track in all competitions.

Hopefully, they could be involved in some capacity before the next international break, but if they aren’t, then they should be ready to go for the first game after the international break.

Ganguly knew about multiple-captain theory – Buchanan

The war of words between John Buchanan and Sourav Ganguly escalated further with Buchanan, the Kolkata Knight Riders’ coach, saying that he had already discussed with Sourav Ganguly the controversial theory of multiple captains for the team

John Buchanan: “The developments were not at all new to him”•AFP

The war of words between John Buchanan and Sourav Ganguly escalated further with Buchanan, the Kolkata Knight Riders’ coach, saying that he had already discussed with Sourav Ganguly the controversial theory of multiple captains for the team before making the announcement in a press conference on Wednesday. Ganguly had earlier denied any knowledge of this development, but Buchanan insisted that the two had had discussions on the issue during the IPL’s first season.”I had detailed discussions with Sourav during last season’s IPL about his future role,” Buchanan told , a Kolkata-based daily. “The developments were not at all new to him. We had spoken about the importance of having alternative captains.” Buchanan’s remarks contradict the statements of Ganguly, who had said he had no idea about this strategy. “All I can say is that I was not consulted on this. Frankly, it’s a new concept. It may work, it may not.”The decision has evoked strong reactions in Kolkata, with Ganguly fans burning effigies of Buchanan, whose security has been strengthened in the wake of these protests. But the coach explained that this format of the game required a completely new approach, and adapting to this would be difficult for most of the old-timers.”Not just Sourav. Ponting, Gilchrist, Sachin, Laxman, Dravid – for them the onset of Twenty20 has perhaps come at the wrong time. They still can manage because of their sheer talent. But I’m quite clear in my thinking. Like Sourav, they are also nearing the end of their playing careers. The game needs a ‘new dawn’. And the light will be provided by the numerous unnamed, uncapped players waiting for their chances.”When he was reminded that India had won the World Twenty20 under one captain, Buchanan responded by saying the game had undergone much change over the last one-and-a-half years.”At the time there wasn’t much research done about the Twenty20 format. I don’t want to undermine India’s achievement. But it’s true that most of the renowned international players were missing then. The state-level players showed more efficiency and sharpness during the tournament. Gone are those days. The world of franchises has completely changed the face of Twenty20 cricket, The game is progressing. This is what I had explained to Sourav.”Buchanan didn’t clarify as to who would lead the team during various stages of the match, saying that any of three or four senior players – including Chris Gayle and Brendon McCullum – could take charge. He did say, though, that he understood Ganguly’s reluctance to accept the new idea, admitting that Steve Waugh would have reacted similarly had he been in Ganguly’s place. “Steve would have been worried the same way. He is also been brought up the traditional atmosphere. I had spoken to him before I left Australia and told him about my new plans. ‘Again a new idea?’ Steve said.”

Aguilleira calls on West Indies board for more matches

West Indies came to the World Cup with little expectation on their shoulders, despite arriving with a No. 5 ranking for that position was based on their performance in previous World Cup

West Indies came to the World Cup with little expectation on their shoulders, despite arriving with a No. 5 ranking for that position was based on their performance in previous World Cup. In the intervening time, they had only managed a year of international cricket before heading out to Australia. They played some decent cricket to maintain their fifth position, which their captain Merissa Aguilleira said means a lot to her as a player. “It is very important to me,” she said just after sealing the spot with a win against Pakistan at the Drummoyne Oval. “This is not an experienced team and we came out here people not even expecting us to reach this far.”Even so, they did not reach their potential and Aguilleira blamed this upon a lack of experience and called on the West Indies board for more matches to help the talented young women. “We could have performed better,” she said. “At certain times we had teams under pressure even Australia. All we have to just think about is the positions we had them in […] and go back home, study it, work hard on our batting and come back out next World Cup and give some trouble.”The most important thing is experience. As long as you’re experienced and have been in positions, you can easily come out of it. Being inexperienced it’s very hard, even though the team have the ability to do it. That is the most important thing to carry back to the Caribbean and even to the board – we need to go and play some more matches. We need to get more experience in order to be successful.”Their coach Sherwin Campbell has given them the benefit of his wisdom but, at times, found it frustrating that they let match situations slip away. “The coach keeps on complaining and stating that ‘We’re not doing it, we’re not doing it, we are just letting it go’,” Aguillera admits. “I guess once we think about it and go back home and work on our experience, it’s going to help and even this World Cup helps a lot to see where we’re at.Having Campbell on board has certainly helped. “He has been a big West Indies player and he knows a lot of things that he really wants to share with us,” Aguillera said. “As a coach he’s a very good person to look up to.”The World Twenty20 is next on the agenda, in June, and Aguillera expects the players to improve in that short time. This last fortnight has helped hugely, while a long camp is in the offing, to bring together the players from their respective islands. “We need to go and work on our upper body strength and get some balls over the boundaries,” she said. “We are going to go back home and work hard for the Twenty20.”

Everton fans slam Godfrey vs Aston Villa

Many Everton fans have been left slamming the display of Ben Godfrey in their 3-0 away loss to Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

The former Norwich City defender had a torrid few minutes especially when Leon Bailey came on for the hosts, as he really struggled to contain the explosive winger, who managed to grab himself a stunning goal and an assist from a corner which was flicked into the net by Lucas Digne.

A centre-back by trade, Godfrey struggled to adapt to the right-back position all game, losing out on six of his duels, while also failing to record a single clearance or interception, and losing possession of the ball on no fewer than 15 separate occasions, the second-most out of any of his teammates (Sofascore).

These members of the Goodison Park faithful slammed his performance on Twitter, with one Merseyside club supporter even going as far as to claim that he was ‘woeful’:

Sky Sports pundit warns Ndombele

Sky Sports’ Michael Bridge has sent a stern warning to Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Tanguy Ndombele after a new plan emerged to reintegrate the midfielder.

The Lowdown: Staying put at Spurs

The French midfielder made his intentions of leaving Tottenham clear over the summer, requesting to end his two-year spell after not being able to solidify himself in the starting lineup.

Ndombele has struggled to adjust to the English lifestyle since his move from Lyon and it was reported that he had informed the club that he wanted to depart if any bids were made.

Ndombele hasn’t featured yet under Nuno Espirito Santo, but after not getting his move, plans have now emerged to get the Frenchman back and firing in the Spurs XI.

The Latest: Bridge sends warning

According to Football London, Nuno now plans to reintegrate Ndombele back into his first-team.

Speaking on Sky Sports News, via Football London, Bridge has discussed the situation both parties now find themselves in, and he didn’t hold back on the 24-year-old.

He said: “Tottenham really have to get him, meet with him, and just say ‘look, we know you want to leave, you’ve got a good thing here and you’re not going to get back into the French squad like this, just knuckle down’.

“We all know how good he can be, he’s a YouTube player. Imagine our showreels, it won’t take long to get Ndombele’s best bits. He needs to knuckle down because he’s not young anymore and I’m sick of excuses from him.”

Ndombele will have to battle Oliver Skipp and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg for a place.

The Verdict: Plan has to work

Bridge’s quotes are strong, but he’s right. Nuno’s plan to bring Ndombele back into the squad has to work if he is going to return to the French national team ahead of the World Cup next year, while it would also help Spurs to put him in the shop window.

Ndombele showed glimpses of quality last season, including that special goal at Sheffield United, but was often inconsistent and Nuno has caught on with that quickly.

This season is a telling one for Ndomebele and Spurs. Their record signing hasn’t hit the heights expected, and whether he is to stay or go next summer, they simply must find a way to get him playing consistent and injury-free football.

Liverpool fans react to Sanches revelation

Renato Sanches’ proposed move to Liverpool was ‘cancelled’ after the player suffered an injury, Portuguese journalist Pedro Almeida has claimed.

The Portugal midfielder played the full 90 minutes in Lille’s Ligue 1 opener against Metz, but hasn’t featured since after sustaining a meniscal injury. It has been reported that the 24-year-old faces being sidelined for a ‘sizeable chunk of the first half of the season’.

That was one of the reasons why Wolverhampton Wanderers called off a loan move for Sanches, although the financial demands involved in the deal also played a part (via Tim Spiers).

Why might Liverpool have wanted Sanches?

Sanches caught the eye with his performances at the European Championship in the summer even as Portugal’s title defence ended in the Round of 16. He was hailed as ‘terrific’ by Jermaine Jenas as he shone in a 2-2 group stage draw with France.

Signing the £27m-rated Sanches could have bolstered Liverpool’s midfield ranks in the wake of Georginio Wijnaldum’s departure, but it transpired that the Reds’ only summer signing was the £36m move for centre-back Ibrahima Konate.

Liverpool fans weigh in on Sanches claim

In light of Almeida’s claim, which hinted that Sanches may have been close to signing for Liverpool, plenty of Kopites gave their reactions via Twitter. One of them drew comparisons with Nabil Fekir, who looked set to move to Anfield in 2018 before the move collapsed, with reports of a failed medical amid a lingering knee injury (talkSPORT).
