Final forced into reserve day by rain

ScorecardSouth Africa’s one-day cup final will be replayed on Saturday after it was washed out on Friday with 16.2 overs played. The match will start again from scratch, which means the 64 for 4 notched up by Cape Cobras in their innings will count for nothing. A new toss also means new teams can be announced. That will come as welcome news to both sides, who had to leave a player out through injury. Justin Kemp failed a fitness test for Cobras just before the match was due to start and was replaced by Vernon Philander. With extra time, Kemp’s hamstring may hold-up for the replayed match. Lions’ allrounder Chris Morris was also ruled out at the 11th hour. He is carrying a quad strain and may only be able to play by Wednesday but will probably have a fitness test again. Both teams fielded the other international players available to them. Dale Steyn, Rory Kleinveldt and Robin Peterson turned out for the Cobras with Alviro Petersen and Imran Tahir in the Lions XI. It was during a Tahir over that play stopped. The legspinner, fresh from a humiliating experience on the Australia tour where he conceded 260 runs without taking a wicket in the Adelaide Test, bowled his first over for just three runs and had bowled two balls of the second when a massive thunderstorm began. The players had earlier left the field for 45 minutes when rain interrupted play the first time with the Cobras on 22 for 2.Hardus Viljoen did all the damage for the Lions. He removed the Cobras top-order – having Andrew Puttick caught at second slip and the dangerous Richard Levi at first. A ball after the break, Viljoen trapped Dane Vilas lbw and then had Stiaan van Zyl caught behind. Cobras were in trouble for 36 for 4 but Justin Ontong and Yaseen Vallie had begun the counter-attack.Lions will be aggrieved that their efforts will count for nought as both sides resume with clean sheets tomorrow.

Queensland bowler Chris Swan retires

Chris Swan, the Queensland swing bowler, has announced his retirement from state cricket. Swan, 33, will depart the game having collecting 101 first-class wickets at an average of 25.92 in 31 matches, as well as 31 victims at 27.38 in his 23 one-day appearances.A late starter at the elite level, Swan made his debut for the Bulls at the age of 28, and became a semi-regular member of Queensland’s attack over the next six seasons. His career highlight came in 2010-11, when he took the third best figures in Queensland’s first-class history, with a collection of 13 for 144 in a Sheffield Shield match against South Australia at Allan Border Field.Swan also proved himself a very useful lower-order batsman and scored three first-class half-centuries, averaging 21.15. He also wrote himself into the record books with the bat in 2009-10, when he and Luke Feldman put on 57 for the final wicket to beat Victoria, the highest last-wicket partnership to secure a victory in 120 years of Australian first-class cricket.”I never really thought I was in the mix,” Swan said of his late emergence on the first-class scene. “It took some injuries to some top notch players at the time for me to come into contention and looking back, I was happy just to be given a chance.”Opening the bowling with a legend like Andy Bichel in my debut is still one of my career highlights and that includes winning the one-day final [in 2008-09] and taking the 13 wickets in a game, although taking a six-for and a seven-for in one match was pretty special. I thought taking five wickets for Queensland was about as good as it gets.”The Queensland coach, Darren Lehmann, said Swan was a fine example of a player who never gave up on his own ability.”He was also a quintessential Queenslander,” Lehmann said. “He was great within the group and reminded everyone that playing for your state was something that was to be cherished and celebrated. We’ll miss him from the group, that’s for sure. We all wish him the best for the future and I’m sure we’ll look forward to seeing him around the Gabba down the track.”Swan, who also played one match for the Brisbane Heat last season, said he was keen to play on in grade cricket next summer. A pest controller before he became a professional cricketer, he will also use his spare time to build his business.”Yep, I’ll just concentrate on knocking over termites rather than batsmen from now,” Swan said.

Ponting secure for home summer – Clarke

Michael Clarke, Australia’s captain, has all but guaranteed Ricky Ponting his place in the team’s next Test assignment, at home against South Africa in November

Daniel Brettig in Roseau22-Apr-2012Michael Clarke, Australia’s captain, has all but guaranteed Ricky Ponting his place in the team’s next Test assignment, at home against South Africa in November. Ponting has looked in good touch in the Caribbean despite not making many runs and Clarke, who is also a selector, indicated Ponting’s place would be safe for the first Test of the home summer, more than six months away.Having staved off a run of slim scores in Sri Lanka and South Africa before enjoying a storming series at home against India, Ponting joined the majority of his fellow batsmen in struggling to make a major score in the West Indies. Only one century was made in two Tests, by Shivnarine Chanderpaul in Barbados, and Clarke said Ponting was arguably the man most likely to make one should the Dominica pitch offer a little more encouragement to stroke play.”He’s hitting the ball well, probably hasn’t got that big score that he’d like but none of us have. Conditions haven’t been great for making big hundreds,” Clarke said of Ponting. “If you wanted to make runs here you had to bat for a hell of a long time, and need a bit of luck as well along the way. Ricky’s one of the guys that has put the team above himself and sacrificed his wicket or tried to take the game forward because we’ve needed to, to try and help us win the game.”If he continues to play the way he’s played throughout the last 12 months, he had a wonderful summer, then I see no reason he won’t be in the team come the first Test against South Africa. There’s a lot of cricket to be played from now until then. Ricky’s not currently in our one-day squad but we also have some first-class cricket leading up to that first Test so I’m confident Ricky’s batting well and he’s not far away from a big score. If we get a decent wicket here I wouldn’t be surprised if he finished the summer on a very high note.”For his part, Ponting has no thoughts of the finish line, proving it by staying on at Windsor Park for throw-downs from the assistant coach Justin Langer after the rest of the squad had returned to the hotel. “Not yet no, one more game here,” he said when asked about retirement thoughts. “We’ll wait and see how many I get this week, if I get 200 this week you probably won’t be asking me that question.”Seven months and 13 Tests since he led Australia onto the field in Sri Lanka, Clarke called for one final push from his men to ensure the series against West Indies was won. He also pointed to the fact that so many of his men will be going direct from the Caribbean to the IPL as a reminder that fatigue should not be a problem as they play at Roseau’s Windsor Park for the first time. For the first time, Clarke will be joining them, having signed with Sourav Ganguly’s Pune. The IPL will reduce the break available for those playing both Test and limited-overs cricket, before the Australians start travelling again on a 20-month odyssey that will take them to England and India twice each, either side of home Tests against South Africa and Sri Lanka, and rounded off by a home Ashes series in 2013-14.”I think the closer you get to the finish line the more excited you actually get. We know we’ve got no Test cricket now until the Australian summer after this last Test,” Clarke said. “I’m pretty sure all the boys will want to make this Test a good one for themselves personally and for the team because we’ve had a really good summer, we want to finish on a high before we get stuck into one-day cricket and the Twenty20 World Cup before Test cricket comes around.”And guys can’t be too fatigued. 95% of the blokes are going to the IPL, so we have no excuse not to come out and play our best cricket once again in this Test match and finish what has been a very good summer of Test cricket on a high.
I think we’ve done really well in these conditions. We’ve pushed hard to get results, it could have quite easily been two draws but I think our attitude has helped us win the first Test and we thought we’re going to win the second Test.”A lot of the guys hadn’t seen the West Indies conditions as well so it’s been a good eye opener for the guys who haven’t played Test cricket over here. Your No. 1 goal is to win every series you play, there’s no doubt about that, that’s what we plan to do in this third Test. In saying that we’re trying to win every Test as well.”

Australia Women ended the five-match Twenty20 series against New Zealand Women on a high, winning at the MCG by 20 runs. That meant they finished 4-0 up, and Lisa Sthalekar was named Player of the Series.Australia, after choosing to bat, stumbled to 2 for 16 before Alyssa Healy and Rachael Haynes briefly: the pair put on 34, which was the joint-highest partnership in the match. Healy went on to top score with 30, as none of Australia’s batsmen could build on starts. But with seven of the nine that had a chance to bat getting into double digits, Australia were propelled to a very competitive 7 for 129. Lucy Doolan was the pick of New Zealand’s bowlers, taking 3 for 21 in her four.New Zealand’s innings mirrored Australia’s in that none of the batsmen who got off to starts could go on to score substantially. Their highest partnership of the innings came for the sixth wicket, 34 from Katie Perkins and Frances Mackay, and with the Australia bowlers keeping things tight, the visitors were always behind in the chase. In the end, they finished on 7 for 109 to hand Australia the match.

White joins Hampshire coaching staff

Craig White, the former Yorkshire and England allrounder, is to join Hampshire’s coaching set-up ahead of the new season

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Feb-2012Craig White, the former Yorkshire and England allrounder, is to join Hampshire’s coaching set-up ahead of the new season. White had been expected to pursue a career as an umpire after leaving his position as coach of Yorkshire’s second XI in November of last year, but he will now take up his new role on March 1.White left Yorkshire after more than two decades as a player and coach, with the club bringing in Jason Gilliespie and Paul Farbrace as part of a backroom shake-up. He retired as a player in 2008, having made more than 12,000 runs and taken 395 wickets in first-class cricket, with 30 Test appearances for England and another 51 in ODIs.”This is a very exciting new challenge for me,” White said. “I’ve been at Yorkshire for 22 years but I now feel it would be interesting to see how things are at a new county. I’ve always admired the way things are done at Hampshire – it seems a very focused but relaxed place so it should be exactly my kind of atmosphere. They’ve got some great young cricketers there so I’m looking forward to working with them.”Hampshire finished bottom of Division One in last season’s County Championship and were subsequently relegated. It has been a winter of change at the Rose Bowl, with players such as Dominic Cork, Nic Pothas and Michael Lumb all departing. Simon Katich has been signed as the county’s overseas player, while Jimmy Adams will continue as captain after taking up the role at the end of last season.Giles White, the Hampshire manager, said: “The players and staff are excited about this appointment. We all look forward to working with Craig and tapping into his experience. We are delighted to have him at Hampshire.”

Querl stars on debut for Tuskers

ESPNcricinfo’s round-up of the latest action from the Logan Cup in Zimbabwe

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Oct-2011Seamer Glen Querl made an eye-catching entrance to Zimbabwean first-class cricket as a match haul of 9 for 101 from him helped set up a nine-wicket win for Matabeleland Tuskers over Southern Rocks at Masvingo Sports Club.Querl grew up in Zimbabwe and played Under-19 cricket for them before heading to England to further his career, and landing a spot on MCC’s Young Cricketers programme. From there, he was picked up by the Unicorns – a team of non-contracted professionals in the English domestic one-day competition – and become an established member of their seam attack. After a couple of speculative matches for the Mountaineers’ B side at the end of last season, he returned to Zimbabwe and won a contract with Tuskers, sharing the new ball with Keegan Meth in the first innings against Rocks. He made a telling start on his first-class debut, his 6 for 38 helping to skittle Tuskers for 148. Half-centuries from opener Terry Duffin and wicketkeeper Adam Wheater ensured a lead for Tuskers, after which Meth’s five-for set a fourth-innings target of exactly 100. Tuskers lost Brian Chari early, but Duffin and Gavin Ewing saw them home with minimum fuss against the struggling Rocks, who are yet to win a first-class match this season.Mid West Rhinos very nearly pulled of a remarkable win in their match against Mashonaland Eagles at Kwekwe Sports Club. Having conceded a first-innings lead, Rhinos seemed to be out of contention after setting Eagles a target of just 158 in the fourth innings. In a remarkable turnaround, Rhinos clawed their way back in to the match and eventually held Eagles to a tense draw, reducing them to 154 for 9 before the match came to an end.Rhinos had reached 321 in their first innings after being put in to bat, thanks mainly to the efforts of the in-form Gary Ballance, who cracked 83, and Solomon Mire’s career-best 96. Eagles captain Stuart Matsikenyeri then underpinned a strong batting effort, his 144 adding to three half-centuries from Sikandar Raza, Regis Chakabva and Peter Moor as Eagles reached 463.Ballance, who has now scored 421 runs in his last three first-class innings, carried the batting once again in the second innings, his his 128 – and Riki Wessels’ 73 – guiding Rhinos to 299 all out. Eagles stumbled through the early stages of their chase on the final evening, but appeared on course during an 81-run fifth-wicket stand between Chakabva and Moor. Once they were parted, however, panic set in and three run-outs reduced Eagles to 154 for 9 in the final over of the day.

Rudolph's happy return leaves Yorkshire in charge

Jacques Rudolph came within a run of celebrating his return to the Yorkshire ranks with a century as bottom-placed Hampshire endured another difficult day at the Rose Bowl.South African Rudolph, who only rejoined the club last week, seemed sure to score the 43rd century of his first-class career until he drove spinner Imran Tahir to short mid-wicket where Dominic Cork clutched a low catch.Rudolph’s dismissal after 211 balls and 11 fours and a six came as a surprise because the tidy left hander had offered no hint of a chance until then. His dismissal was a rare moment of success for Hampshire as Yorkshire, after winning the toss, finished on a respectable 318 for three at the end of the first day from 105 overs.Left-arm pace bowler Chris Wood promised much for Hampshire in his opening spell in which all his first seven overs were maidens. Wood also took a wicket, that of Rudolph’s opening partner Joe Sayers who edged him to wicketkeeper Michael Bates after managing just eight from 50 balls.Yorkshire went into the match without Tim Bresnan, Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow – all on international duty – but they were not missed as Yorkshire quickly got on top.Rudolph and his captain, Andrew Gale took the match away from Hampshire with a stand of 129 for the second wicket in 32 overs. Rudolph reached his 50 with a six over mid-wicket against Danny Briggs before Hampshire made their second breakthrough at 149.Gale who had struck 10 fours in his 54, lifted Tahir to mid-wicket where James Vince held the catch above his head. There was no respite for Hampshire, still looking for their first win of the season, as Anthony McGrath joined Rudolph in another profitable stand, this time 55 for the third wicket.Rudolph was the third to go at 249 but even then Yorkshire maintained a firm grip on proceedings, McGrath now joined by Gary Ballance in an unbroken stand of 114 for the fourth wicket.McGrath was missed at short leg by Jimmy Adams off Tahir at 20 but went in at the close unbeaten with 65 in an innings so far made up of 188 balls and including five fours. The aggressive Ballance reached his half century just before stumps and was 50 not out with eight fours.Wood’s miserly start helped him to respectable figures of 1 for 42 from 18 overs while Tahir was the most successful in terms of wickets with 2 for 89 from 31 overs.
